The place is nice. I like how its a deli, butcher, bar, restaurant and event space. The upstairs front restaurant side was pretty empty, but the host made us wait a bit before sitting us while talking as if they would have to find a table for us cause it was so packed. The food was average. I got the hanger steak done medium rare, but it was bloody rare with a bit of a sear. I guess they had just killed the cow cause I could have swore it was still moving. This business is unprofessional and effectively scammed me out of forty dollars. I purchased two tickets to the November 9th show at Chop Shop(which had great food, I have nothing against them), unfortunately it is clear the people from 1st ward are a bunch of incompetents. The event was advertised to have doors open at 8pm and the event begin at 8:30pm, but upon finishing our meals and going to retrieve are already paid for tickets we found out that the show would not begin until 10pm and that there would be an opener at 9pm, which also was not advertised online. We had made plans that meant we would have to leave by 10pm, but we had expected to see at least one hour of the performance. Instead my date and I left without seeing any of the performance. Instead of offering to refund us or apologizing for their fuck-up the staff told us that we should have expected the show to begin an hour and a half later than advertised. The moronic logic that goes into such a statement is something I don't think I can wrap my head around. Don't expect their shows to be on time, don't expect to be treated fairly if they fuck up and if you can see the musicians you want to see somewhere else. read more

The food was delicious. Wings came out a little under cooked. However, the overall dinning experience was awful. Our food took over 45 min to come out without explanation as to why. We were a party of 6 on a Monday. They were not busy at all. And a majority of the table had salads, the remaining had burgers. The waiter came by maybe twice to take our order and then drop off. The last thing that was upsetting is they were so fast to clear our plates rather than get our food out in a timely manner. So by the time we got our food we were starving. Everyone was basically liking and scraping their plates for every last Crum of food. However was impossible because our plates were being taken from right underneath us as we were still eating. It's not like they were even closing. Overall a very frustrating dinning experience. Needless to say with all the restaurants we have available in Chicago it's definitely not worth a repeat. read more

CHECK THIS PLACE OUT!!! I went to Chop Shop with some friends shortly after it opened and everything was fantastic! The first thing you see when you walk in is the deli/meat counter & display - but don't let this deceive you. As you walk further in, the decor is slightly modern and dare I say industrial, but they did a nice job featuring the exposed brick as a central element of the decor. We dined on the first floor, but there is also an upstairs area as well. We ordered some cocktail drinks to start, which were absolutely divine...I had the ginger man and you could tell it was made with plenty of TLC as it required muddling, mixing, and just the right amount of garnish. I switched to a glass of wine to have with the meal, which made more sense to me. We ordered the Signature Butcher's Board with all the cheeses to start, and it was awesome. There was a great variety, and it was the perfect size to share among the four of us. Probably one of the best cheese plates I've ever tasted! For the main course, I ordered the Herb Marinated Chicken dish and my other friend ordered the Ricotta Gnocchi - we decided to split them between us. We honestly couldn't decide which was better! The gnocchi was cooked perfectly and the sauce was really tasty. The chicken was incredibly moist and tender - served on the bone for more intense flavor. The other main entrees ordered by the two other guys were the ribeye and the duck - both were cooked perfectly. I'm not sure if they allow this, but I highly suggest NOT making any substitutions...the chefs know what they are doing! The service was pretty top notch. Our server's name was something latin...he was very knowledgeable about the menu items and gave some great suggestions. I will definitely be going back and have already suggested this place to some other friends. I'll be saving room for their dessert menu next time!!! read more

The chop shop has it all! They have a deli, restaurant, bar, rooftop patio and a private event space. The staff here is great. They are so welcoming and attentive. My favorite meal is their flank steak but a close second is the meatballs. You can not go wrong with any of the meat options and the guys in the deli are knowledgeable about their products. They even give recommendations on preparation. The rooftop is awesome and a hidden gem in this neighborhood! I recommend this spot to everyone! read more

My husband and I both enjoyed our meals! Excellent food and we will definitely be back next time we are in the area. We started with the charcuterie sampler plate which had a variety of cheeses and meats from the deli. They also had a great selection of beers on draft and some unique bourbon cocktails which we didn't try but sounded great. We both had a dry aged sirloin that had a phenomenal taste and was cooked perfectly. I would say stick to ordering meat here since the concept is a butcher shop and restaurant however I didn't try anything else to know what it would taste like. Service was great and speedy and although quiet at first, the restaurant was busier around 8pm, but it's a unique eclectic style place so I expected it to be happening on a Saturday night. Great value For the price we paid and honestly a better steak than what you kind find downtown at one of the high end steakhouses. The Chop Shop is definitely underrated! read more

I have had multiple experiences at Chop Shop and each one just keeps getting better! I first went with my boyfriends family for a semi-formal birthday dinner. For a large group everyone was happy with the food and the round of tequilla shots didn't hurt! The next time I was there 2 girlfriends and I posted up at the bar upstairs and enjoyed some nice small brew beers and delicious burgers. Mine was seriously mouth watering - the taste of the meat itself was AMAZE. On my most recent visit we sat on the "secret rooftop patio" as I like to call it. So it isn't actually secret - except for you can't see it from the street so I feel like very few people actually know it is there. We had brunch in the sun with a light breeze. The decor on the patio is so cute, with a full wall of art and hidden words. My breakfast sandwich was devine and the hangover drink did exactly what it was meant to do - get me over the hump from the night before haha! I will be back - no doubt! read more

This review is for the chop shop's customer service not their food...since we never actually got to eat. Reservations were made for Friday night at 815 one week or so in advance. When we arrived early for our reservation my party requested to be seated upstairs. We were told they had a table right away for downstairs but there would be a short wait for upstairs. No worries...good company equals no problem waiting, particularly since we were literally the only ones waiting for a table....except 45 minutes later we walked out after watching about 6-7 other parties of our size walk in and get sat before we did. Now we did give up our downstairs table but here are the main problems: 1. The hosts acknowledged they kept seating parties that were walking in late for their reservations due to weather. In fact the host told us, "those people had an 8 reservation and they are just now getting here and getting sat." this was at 830 after we had already been waiting for a table for 25 minutes...so a table that is 30 minutes late gets their table immediately while a party with good etiquette who shows up on time understanding how to plan ahead for poor weather (early) must wait...45 minutes with no table. Way to reinforce the wrong behavior chop shop! 2. Three hosts clearly not communicating messages to each other. After we requested upstairs upon arrival with one host, we saw that multiple other parties were sat in close succession upstairs without specifying a preference upon checking in. When we inquired again about our table, a different host immediately tried leading us again to the downstairs table. Clearly no note was made that we were A. Still waiting, and B. waiting for a table upstairs. Had this been done I am assuming we would have gotten the table we requested rather then many of the walkins being showed upstairs. 3. Dismissive and avoidant treatment: after we complained for the second time about seeing so many parties wander in and get seated upstairs while we waited one host was snippy and dismissive saying we were offered a table twice. Yes, however, we politely requested upstairs when we arrived thinking it would be no big deal with literally no one else waiting and told it would be a short wait. 45 minutes without ever getting a table is not a short wait. after one initially proactive seeming host kindly offered us a drink while we waited promising our table was close, she did everything she could to avoid us, our eye contact, and our proximity. If you think it was exhausting to read this long, negative review, imagine how exhausting and frustrating it was to be standing, hungry, watching people walk in off the street and get a table before you while you waited for a table you reserved for 45 minutes. No one else specified where they wanted to sit and no one else waited for longer then two minutes or so for the hosts to get their menus together before marching them upstairs while we waited 45 minutes for them to get their act together. Still have no idea or understanding behind their thinking. Went to Prasinos, were sat almost immediately at a packed restaurant, ordered delicious cocktails and food and the Friday night was salvaged! Too many great places in Chicago for this type of shenanigans! read more

I really wanted to like this place. It has everything going for it: good beer, good location, good vibe...but really poor service. I've been three times and all three times have been just, "Eh." The last time my partner and I went, the hostess was mid conversation (not work related) with some other employees when we walked in. It took a bit for her to acknowledge us, and when she did, she rolled her eyes when we asked if the patio was open. Our server messed up our drink order, and dinner order. I'm a reasonable person, and I don't expect people to be perfect, but I do expect someone to acknowledge when a mistake has been made. I don't need a freebe...or a discount...just acknowledge it and let's move on. We ordered a side item that wasn't brought to the table with our entrees. Okay, fine...mistakes happen. Where it went south was when we finally flagged the server down, and brought this to his attention, there was no apology and no effort to make it better, except a half-assed, "Well, do you still want the brussels sprouts" We'd already been eating for 20 minutes at that point, so we said no. We've given Chop Shop three tries...but don't think we'll be going back. read more

You can tell this place is still a work in progress, stopped in for lunch and the staff was so focused on prepping for dinner it appears and just hanging out with each other that I had to ask 3 times for silverware when my meal finally arrived... and the potato salad that was ordered with my sandwich came when I was done with the sandwich. Came here tonight looking for some good food and drinks. We were so excited, as we had stumbled upon Chop Shop online and it looked amazing. After waiting at the host stand for a few minutes, we noticed that every person that worked there was going out of their way to ignore us. One girl saw us and rolled her eyes and went and hid behind the bar. Finally we asked if they were closed, and the guy at the bar told us that they were open, but they had no servers or bartenders. No further explanation. We seated ourselves and waited about ten more minutes before leaving. Definitely won't be giving a place with this poor level of service a chance. read more

Our server never asked us if we cared for more drinks, never refilled the water on the table and was MIA the majority of the evening. In the bathroom adding more unfortunate black eye liner? Flirting with the bartender downstairs? Your guess is as good as mine. We were the only table upstairs so it was not like she was swamped with other dining guests pulling her away from us. We were there for over three hours. Plates sat for for what seemed like an hour before cleared. NOT OKAY. While their menu says they "proudly serve" Bang Bang pie this is a LIE. A devious LIE. The serve says they make their own pie now. Not sure who their pastry chef is but perhaps they should go observe the steps taken at Bang Bang. I would have rather eaten a gallon of non-dairy crap "ice cream" than to have had their pathetic excuse of pie cross the threshold of my lips. NO TRESPASSING EVER AGAIN FOR CHOP SHOP PIE. Icky. No bueno. Vile. Dry. Not filling. Total joke. Chop Shop, you need to step up your game when it goes to service and PIE. read more

I loved this place. I will be returning. The appetizers of crab cakes, mussels, and kale salad were delicious starters to a beautiful meal. I went with my boyfriend and a friend of ours, and we each exercised restraint in our ordering, which i think was a huge contributor to our successful meal. After the starter, my boyfriend and I agreed to share the burger, my friend ordered the bourbon beer beef roast, and i ordered two sides for the table; the meatballs, and the green beans. Both were excellent. The meatballs, while a bit on the firm side, were cooked perfectly in a really delicious marinara sauce, and the beans were perfectly al dente, while also warm, and covered in a beautiful lemon oil. I think the beans were actually everyones' favorite item on the table. The food was delicious, but we all did get the impression that we were a nuisance to our server. The host was super friendly, and the table was promptly cleaned, but her attitude was that of someone who needed us to be done faster. Hence, the docking of one star. Wow. What a bust. We went here for my friend's birthday - just 4 of us. It was a great night so we chose to sit on the roof. It was an adorable space and the restaurant showed promise and then everything went downhill. The waitress came and got our drinks, we wanted to order an appetizer, but she left before we got the chance. They were out of the wine the birthday girl wanted so she got another glass. Time to order. They are out of the special which 2 people (including the birthday girl wanted). It would have been nice for the waitress to tell us that ahead of time, but she didn't. Our meals come. The girls ordered steaks and the guys got burgers. As it was our first time there, we didn't realize the steaks didn't come with sides (and the menu didn't note that)...would have been nice for the waitress to tell us so we could have ordered something to go with the meat. The boys ordered another beer...guess what...THEY WERE OUT! I told the waitress it was my friend's birthday and they did nothing special. I asked to speak to a manager and got a supervisor. I told her about our awful experience and she took down my name and number to have the manager call me back. It has been a week and I haven't got a call. I thought it stop by one evening after a networking event and I'm really glad I did. Great to have selection and great liquor selection in the service was amazing. I cannot wait to come back here for brunch, they had a awesome band that was playing from New Orleans, great artwork inside rustic stools at the bar, nice leather studded boots, a rough time, and just great people in general. Hey also have the opportunistic to the bar after the show was over in the manager, and he was nothing shy of courteous. For the neighborhood the price is right. Highly recommended several times for brunch lunch dinner and late-night drinks. There's also bakery in the front. Superb addition to the Bucktown neighborhood. If you guys show up, be sure to ask for Richard the bartender and let him know that I said hello. He has a great sense of humor and even if you don't know me feel comfortable telling him that you don't know me but you read my review. I live nearby this restaurant/bar/deli/event space. The variety of options here works for me. I have dined upstairs in the restaurant, in the bar, gotten take-out sandwiches, and purchased deli/butcher and retail products. I have also been to Dose Market in the event space. Each time I have found the food to be high quality and tasty, and the service from the servers, hosts, cashiers and counter servers very good. I've enjoyed salads, pasta, appetizers, burger, sandwiches. I purchase their sausage from the butcher, which is amazing. They have specials and discount coupons on receipts. It's convenient for late night and lunch, as well as a casual week night dinner with TVs in the bar. read more

I love their sandwiches, but I came in to get a sub and watched the employee counting handling the change from the tip jar (making little stacks) then go directly to make our sandwiches without washing his hands!!! No gloves, no hand washing in between register and counting money and grabbing the tomatoes and bread and slices of meat and cheese with his bare hands. I'm sure the lack of hygiene happens elsewhere, but that doesn't make it right and this was right in front of my face! Now I can't bring myself to come back and eat their delicious sandwiches! This place has a great space for bands, but the service is a joke. I have only been to this place twice. Once last year, and just the other night to see a band. On both occasions, the bartender has given my card TO THE EXACT SAME PERSON they gave it to last time which was my friend oddly enough. To my dismay, the last time was worse since the staff was drunk, rude, and just not paying attention to anything they were doing, and my friend didn't realize he had my card and charged a bunch of drinks on it at another bar. Horrible customer service on both visits. This time the bartender gave my card to him and luckily we both noticed right away so there was not a repeat of the last fiasco of canceling my card with the bank. Seriously though, the odds of that. We do not have the same names either, just similar hair styles. Still, do they not pay attention at this bar? Some advice, pay with cash at this place and watch your tab. I went here on a Saturday night. They were having a band downstairs so I sat on the second floor. So cool, pictures of downtown and the el outside the window. I would take friends here just for the experience. The food was ok. The highlight was the (duck fat) fries. Eat your heart out McDonald's. Deviled eggs had too much mustard. I have been wanting to check out The Chop Shop since they opened and I was lucky enough to be invited here recently for a private luncheon event. I have to say that the space (what I got to see) was really nice and the food was very good. The immediate area to the front is like a carryout/casual space coupled with a deli and meat counter.. The back area on the first floor has a nice bar setup along with booths and hi table tops. There is a huge private space area behind that. I was told there is an upstairs seating area that is more of a fine dining space (I hope to see that area on my next visit). We were served buffet style.. There were huge platters of different types of poor boy sandwiches that were delicious!! You can tell the cheese and meat used was quality. Sausage & Peppers was next. Very good.. the sausage had a nice bite to it. Mini Meatballs with Mozzarella Cheese were really good!! Just like the poor boys, you could tell the meat was quality. Assorted vegetables with Hummus was great.. and my favorite was the Gnocchi with Brussel Sprouts. I know it doesn't sound like it would go together, but it sure did! I was told it was a family recipe of the chef's. Very Good!! I'm looking forward to coming back for a nice steak dinner. They sure do have it.. Their meat counter was very impressive. Stopped in yesterday to buy a few things from the butcher section. I expected it to be very expensive. Prices were reasonable. The selection and quality were great. Since every staff member I saw was young, good-looking, and super cool, I didn't expect them to be helpful. I was wrong. They were sweet, knowledgeable, and patient with my questions. Finally had the dinner menu -- O MG the burger was amazing !! I am very picky and boring eater and this burger was just soooo very good ! I wish I didn't eat so many other apps and just had 2 burgers. I also really liked the Mama Minelli's meatballs. You get a 2 huge meatballs on a bun for an APP! Again, the owner was there, smiling and happy and making sure all his guests were pleased ! I love it here and wish it was closer to my neighborhood. I would love to have big parties there. One of the best additions to Wicker Park! I have been to Chop Shop multiple times, and each experience was better than the last. Every item on the menu I've tried has been incredible! Some of my favorites include the ricotta gnocchi and the herb marinated chicken. As if the food wasn't enough, the ambiance is amazing! It's a unique space that combines aspects of a bar/club with a trendy restaurant. The first floor has a great bar along with an open event space that's perfect for music venues and dancing! Meanwhile up top, there's a quaint sit down area that provides an added city charm as you see the "L" whiz by. Overall, it's a place i'll definitely keep frequenting and I would recommended others to follow suit!! read more

I had to send my pork chop back, it was raw and then when it came back and after I started digging in, cutting the fat and bone off, I was left with about 3 bites and for $25 bucks, a total rip off.
