This place has been bookmarked for awhile now especially after reading reviews that people has been coming here for 20+ years. I can see why but I can also see why only locals stick around. Parking is limited in a shared plaza but I was able to find plenty of parking on a Thursday night at 7:30pm. The place was packed when we arrived along with a few parties waiting outside. The place is small and quaint. There was only big group ahead of us so we waited about 15 minutes. The menu is extensive but not impressive. They have appetizers, rice dishes, sides, noodle dishes, curries, ramen, udons, and sushi. I was surprised they didn't offer more raw items or rolls that had more raw fish. Most of their rolls were California based or deep fried. They were average rolls. We got the Sunset, Poki, and Pink rolls. All were good but not spectacular. Like I said they were all average rolls for about ~$13/roll. They drizzled the usual spicy mayo and eel sauce on top so nothing stood out. We also go takoyaki, side of kimchi, and the chicken yakisoba which could've used a lot more work. The servers were nice but there was only 2 and it seemed too overwhelming for them so I think they should hire more. Taking the order took awhile but the food came out quick. Their consistent with the quality of the food has always been spot on, same recipes and the amount of food you get. And affordable!! Went here for dinner tonight with my family. It's a pretty small place and they were busy when we got there but we only had to wait about five minutes to get a seat. The service is pretty quick and the seats are pretty comfortable if you get a booth. I ordered the teriyaki chicken Bento box which was really good and a lot of food. If you're looking for well priced, average Japanese fare in a casual environment with lots of options, this is the place to go. Came here last night for the first time in years. It used to be a go to for my family and it didn't disappoint! We got seated quickly. The server didn't come take our order for a little bit, but they were slammed. Chopstix is a good sushi place to go to for lunch! I'd recommend for its value and taste, as it is not pricey. I have been here 4-5 times before with friends or take-out. The service is decent. When I ordered take-out, despite me standing at their counter, I had to wait over 5 minutes for acknowledgement. Same goes with dining in, the waiter is not really friendly or receptive to requests. There is one staff member who is friendly, but I've only seen her once. The crunchy roll is cheap - there is 5 pieces and it is bigger. They have a variety of rolls, if that is your style. I have tried their dragon rolls, alaskan, popcorn lobster, etc. and they are all pretty tasty and standard. We sat down and had a great gossip session, this food is recommended to eat during a juicy gossip session because it's yummy but very cheap compared to the San Diego restaurant scene. We found the ramen and udon to be standard, and didn't have any unique or fancy toppings or anything, but it did satisfy our craving as the noodles and flavors of the soup were still good. I would definitely recommend the tonkotsu broth for ramen and the wafu broth for udon! They have a ton of meat selections but we chose the deluxe chasyu (7pc) which was more than enough meat. I have also tried the chicken katsu don and it was a huge portion with lots of egg, rice, and chicken (enough for 2 meals for me). I have been coming here for about 20+ years as it is one of the restaurants that has been around Convoy for very long and survived all the changes. It is in one of those small parking lot area but they do have additional parking behind the boba shop so make sure to check it out back there too. They do have their own restroom and they also sell their branded goods (such as shirts). My go-to order is the Hiyashi Soba, which is a cold noodle dish that used to only be sold during the summer so I was pleasantly surprised that I was able to order it in October. Maybe it is year round now. In the photo I have removed the ginger they place in the middle just for personal preference. I then pour in the sauce to the large plate and mix all the toppings (except the katsu as I like that crispy). You probably don't need the whole sauce in there as it could get salty so adjust as you taste it. We also order the crunchy roll which is always said to be their special and has its own standing menu on the table. Nothing super special about it but never disappointing to get it. I feel like they used to coat it with more tempura flakes on it. They are huge in size so just get one order to share. The roll is a two biter. One thing that did bother me was the cleanliness of the table. They did wipe down the table top but not the chairs (booster type). While eating, I felt something behind my thigh and there was something sticky which i think was old rice. Before I sat down, I did give it a good swipe to remove some food crumbs but I guess missed the rice on the edge of the seat. Service is always great: the servers are kind and do try to converse with the customers but don't bother you much either. Food quality has not changed since I first came here. Solid place tucked in a cramped plaza in the heart of Convoy street. My friend and I were greeted at the door and immediately sat down. It was a busy evening as expected of a Saturday dinner rush. The food was great and I wondered why I never went to eat here sooner. I ate a few times prior to try a couple dishes before I decided to write this. For the price you are getting a good value on their plate meal sets which often come with a light salad and the usual miso soup. The mapo tofu and curry combination plate is an interesting option that I have seen at other places. Usually I would have to go to two different restaurants to get each of the dishes but not here. Curry is solid and flavorful, nice chunks of beef in there to deepen the flavor of the roux. Can't even get this kind of flavor at Coco Ichibanya down the street. Mapo tofu is on the sweeter side of most mapo tofu but still a savory dish nonetheless. Service was a bit slow after the staff took our order but the dinner rush was in full swing by the time I finished. Last time had the chicken katsu with this combo plate and it was dry. I recommend the calamari (also pictured) or pork katsu for sure. Would definitely come back but keep in mind the plaza is very cramped and the back parking lot is often full and hard to get out once you squeeze in. Def a hidden gem in the Convoy area! Def felt comfy and welcoming. Wait staff was super nice! My boyfriend and I came on a weeknight around 7pm. There was no wait and we were lucky to find parking right in front of the restaurant. There's a lot on the menu. And a lot that's not commonly served at other Japanese restaurants and surprisingly the prices are not bad. My only complain is their spicy garlic edamame. I love edamame and this one wasn't it. If I were to order it again, I'd get the plain one. There wasn't any garlic to it and it just seemed like they got the sambal and poured it over the edamame. It just didn't go well together. The sushi we got was pretty good! I forgot to take a picture of it, but we go the ex boyfriend roll and the bulgogi roll. We def liked the ex boyfriend a lot better.
