I wanted the Hiyashi Soba (Seasonal) but nope not available because seasonal i guess meant Summer time :( we ordered some ramen (which was alright but the broth was kinda sweet? i dunno tasted like MSG but i don't think it was....) and gyoza (that wasn't very good... just broke apart when picked up with chopsticks) the restaurant was small but functional...we were seated by the fish tank in the corner like kids in "time-out". I guess someone went shopping at the vons soda sale because there were boxes and boxes of sodas in every available space. I came here on a Thursday night around 6p with a friend. It was relatively empty, so we were seated immediately and also got our orders taken within 5 minutes, so the service was pretty quick. However, what surprised me the most was when the food came out in under 10 minutes... if even 10 minutes? It was the fastest I've ever gotten my food at a restaurant so I was really impressed. I ordered the ton-katsu curry that came with a small bowl of salad and miso soup. When I got my order, I was so surprised as to how HUGE the portions were. There was a large plate packed with rice, curry, and one slice of the katsu pork. The curry itself wasn't that impressive. It reminded me of the curry you'd make that comes out of a box. Don't get me wrong-- the flavour was great, but it just wasn't anything that amazing. However, the pork was really tender and fresh, and tasted great with the Japanese barbeque sauce. The miso soup tasted super MSG-y and wasn't a big fan of it. The meal was pretty much full of ups and downs... and I'm not sure if I'll be coming back. Good food for a great price! It's a small little restaurant, so perfect for a casual dining experience. We got the crunchy roll to share and I got the ebi yakisoba (shrimp stir fry noodles). The sushi pieces were cut in larger pieces than usual, which may be harder to eat for some but was perfectly fine with me! The yakisoba noodles were pretty tasty, although a little too sour. My only issue with this place is the chashyu pork was way too thickly cut. It made it too hard to eat. It was a huge portion, I would have just liked for it to be more thinly sliced. The way the menu works is you pick what kind of filling you want, then what type of broth and noodles. You can add extra noodles for 1 dollar which is definitely worth it in my opinion! We ended up ordering a gyoza appetizer and a chicken katsu donburi. Prices were certainly outstanding. The potstickers were not bad but uninspired. The chicken katsu was average at best. You did get a lot of egg and the rice had a sweet seasoning. I guess I shouldn't complain because of the price but I thought the quality of the food was mediocre. It was filling though. Maybe they've read their reviews and made a better effort or becuase or was an hour before closing and there weren't a lot of people. I ordered a mabo udon which was pretty bomb. I didn't notice it to be oily or anything and it just really hit the spot. 5 stars for food and value! Mom and Pop Japanese food restaurant. My favorite is the Ton Katsu dinner ($8.75). You get miso soup, salad with a Japanese citrus dressing (yummy), two pieces of pork cutlet, and white rice. I've been to Chopstix about a dozen times and each time the food is excellent. They have recently updated the restaurant (new booths and new TVs), so it looks slightly better inside. However, I come for the food! The people who work here are friendly and efficient. A friend introduced to this place probably a decade ago. Love the small mom and pop feel to this place. They serve a fast and affordable lunch that's always consistent and delicious. Chopstix is one of those restaurants that I always visit when I'm in SD. Nothing like it back home. Although it's not the greatest Japanese food, it's still pretty satisfying, and the portions are reasonably large. They also have the "crunchy roll special" which doesn't make sense since the special is ALWAYS there. They did raise prices since my last visit, still worth it though. For the main course, I usually get one of the ramens, but the mabo tofu stuff is pretty good too. Then, we go across the street to Green Tea house for some pearl tea. read more

Located in the heart of Convoy, Chopstix is one of those spots that's just a nice comfortable place to kick back and have a pleasant Japanese meal. Open late-ish, they battle hard in the Convoy ramen market with the likes of Tajima. The people are all very friendly and but parking can sometimes be difficult to be had in the tight lot. Street parking is definitely recommended. Since the gigantic Boomerangs' burger from lunch had burrowed a home for itself in my belly, I decided to go a bit "lighter" and order "only" a crunchy roll and vegetable tempura for dinner. Forever offered as a limited time special, I've got to say that it's a really tasty bargain at only $4.95. Chopstix doesn't specialize in sushi, but this is one thing that they've gotten right. The tempura was a little bit disappointing as I found it a bit on the oily side. My fingers found themselves soaked in the stuff every time I tried to enjoy an oversized vegetable wedge. I remember enjoying some of their other offerings in the past but this trip did not live up to that memory. While their ramen seems to be very popular, I can never bring myself to order such an expensive bowl of noodles and opt for their rice dishes instead. Unfortunately I wasn't up to the task of downing a heavy plate of curry or this review may have ended quite differently, but a restaurant needs to know how to be consistent across their entire menu. Sadly, they generally let me down on this trip, but I haven't given up on you yet, Chopstix. I just hope my next visit is a satisfying one! 3.5 Stars. I haven't been here in years. It's definitely still the same except prices went up a little and there are a couple new faces (staff wise). Oh and they've remodeled since I've been here. Parking is still pretty bad so go during off times. What helps is that one Shop was closed and another was on vacation - so right now parking is great (2/10). It still tasted the same though. We ordered the roast beef shoyu udon. It came in a rather large bowl with a lot of beef. The udon was chewy and my niece loved it. The broth was flavorful and not too salty. My sister got a bento box - chicken teriyaki with tempura. The teriyaki was sweet but it was so good. There was a lot of rice and it's nice that they added some teriyaki sauce on it. It also had a side salad and some edamame. It was definitely a good looking and great testing bento. I had ramen with a poached egg and two shrimp tempura in a tonkatsu broth. I forgot what it's called but it would have been best with udon but this was still good. The broth had great flavor but it's not as rich as some tonkatsu broths that I've had. The toppings were simple, some green onions and two different fish cakes. I could have added the shrimp tempura but I didn't. The shrimp tempura was cooked perfectly and they were a good size. The poached egg continues to cook in the broth so take it out if you want a really runny yolk. One thing, mine came out in a kettle bowl so the broth was super hot when it came out and even a few minutes after. It was pretty awesome. Overall, for three of us, with two sodas, an appetizer and three entrees, it came out to $39. Not too bad in price and we were happy and full. Will come back again if I was in the area. read more

Let me tell you the portions are huge here so come with an appetite. As far as the dishes the mapo tofu was actually really good and unique to have with curry rice. The curry flavor was similar to that you may find in the curry box you get at stores but it did compliment the mapo tofu. The dish comes with a small salad and a miso soup. Waitresses are all Japanese and pretty curt but not unfriendly. I've never had to wait more than 5-10 mins for a table even for dinner or on weekends, and usually you're seated immediately. The parking lot is small but there's also parking in the back. I've had a bite of other dishes my friends ordered here like the oyakodon (chicken and egg rice dish), crunch roll, and tonkotsu ramen. They all seem really really mediocre. The menu is huge so I feel like of course a lot of stuff won't be that fresh or tasty. Their sushi is mostly California roll style. Even though I feel like the entire rest of their menu is not that good and a bit high in price, I think the curry plate is really reasonably priced and tasty. A real gem! I guess you can consider this one of those older Japanese places, small, not too gaudy, enough space to accomodate our group of 14-15 people (although this was the middle of the day Saturday), I don't think it would have been easy later in the evening. I had the Bento Box - tempura, chicken and roll. The food was fine, pricing a bit over than I would expect for a Bento box but it worked out, you can get the soft drink for $1 with your BB. Overall, since I stayed only for the meal, it had the necessary items for a meal, there is a tv monitor on if you are alone (College Football was on). The service was fine and gratuity was already included since we were a group. If I am in the area, it might be a choice but as others mentioned, Convoy area is always difficult to find parking. read more
