72/100 Chorong House Restaurant is a no-frills, hole-in-the-wall Korean eatery. Personally, I would only reorder the seafood pancake. --- A road trip was planned around dining at Chorong House since I was so excited for Korean pancakes. The building has a small side lot which is perfect for ~ 7 cars. The interior is smaller, with ~ 5 tables. There are restrooms for each gender, though slim. We ordered the (1) beef kimbob, (2) dukboki (Korean spicy and sweet rice cakes), and (3) Korean-style seafood pancake. 1. The beef kimbob (10 pieces) was a little bit of a letdown since only 4 pieces had any substantial beef. 4 didn't have any beef, and the other 2 had tiny slivers (and were only rice and lettuce). A little dry, I wish the filling was pickled or had more flavor. 2. The dukboki was a small serving, and had cabbage and onions as well. I wish there were fishcakes with the serving. Overall, it was pretty standard. 3. The korean seafood pancake was big, fluffy, crispy, and stuffed FULL of filling. I was really happy with the pancake, even if it felt a little undercooked. Awesome flavor, good sauce, and large size. We took our leftovers home. It was by far my favorite thing. The restaurant was very obviously run by a small duo team. Wait time of getting food was normal, but the wait time of getting the check was long if you missed the "window" when they were in the front of house and went to the back to start cooking the new table's meal. Overall, a chill, no-frills dining experience if you're in the Syracuse area. I'd avoid the kimbob. read more

Delicious Korean cuisine! I noticed a comment that someone felt the portions were small, which I do not agree with, maybe my friend and I ordered too much, but I was so full at the end of the meal. I probably could've only ordered the soup and been satisfied. My kimchi-chi-gae came out in a cast iron bowl and it was still boiling when it came onto the table. We also ordered the seafood jeon (pancake), and tteok bok ki. Everything was so delicious. This is a small restaurant but they were consistently busy the whole time we were there. The server was very hospitable and attentive. Note that they don't have to-go containers for soup so if you order that prioritize eating that and bring apps home if you need :) read more

I find it hard to rate a local restaurant like this because I do want the to succeed. It is very small with 4 4-seaters. It seems most of their business is take out. I got there at 7 two different nights and was able to get a table. I went on a Wednesday and Thursday and they remind you they close at 8 so best to know what you're going to order before you get there. They have their own parking lot. They are very friendly. The flavors of the food are clean and quite pleasing although the portion sizes are not huge. I like the Tteok Bok Ki better than the Kim Bop and ordered the Yook Gae Jang and liked it a lot. And in Korean restaurants everything tastes better with Soju. No it isn't on par with the top Korean restaurants in NY, LA or DC but I am pleased when I come here and obviously I've come back for more. read more

To-go for Korean food. I came here around 4:30pm. The restaurant is small and wasn't busy. The parking lot is a bit strange. There are 2 doors to go inside: front and side. I got Dak Kal Bi and Den Jang Chigae. They tasted good, and very spicy. The kimchi I got as side dish is quite small compared to other restaurant I've been to. It was good. I think I had too high of expectations coming from LA surrounded by food. But it was good. I got an ox-tail soup and my friend got the short ribs. It was not what I expected; instead of tasting like I was at a restaurant, the food tasted like home cooking. No complaints but nothing crazy either. You may think that this place serves Chinese or Japanese food. But Chorong. What to get: Yuk Gae Jang! Why: It's not Yuk! What else: Either choright or chorong. If you think this place sucks... chorong. The soup here was really good. It was a large-sized portion and it filled me up. It was a little more than $10, so a little more than I like to pay for my Korean dishes, but I really enjoyed it. Just about a 5 star rating, then. Really lovely service. I got it late at night when they were nearly closing. The really funny part is that I came back a little late to pick it up and they were worried that I wasn't coming, so they actually called my phone looking for me. And texted me as well! Amazing food! I haven't had Korean in quite some time but got my fix last night for sure! The place is a hole in the wall, it is a converted house on street where most houses have been torn down and it looks sketchy as heck. Don't let that stop you - Chorong has some of the best Korean anywhere. It's as good as any I have had in NYC and comes close to what you can get in San Francisco. Mandoo dumplings are huge and flavorful, beef bulgogi right on point! My favorite is probably the dukbokki appetizer, rice cakes in a spicy sauce. Can't believe i never wrote a review here for the many times I have visited here during my days at Syracuse. Absolutely amazing Korean food. As cozy as you can get. It's a restaurant placed in a normal house/apartment. It's a local family owned places and sometimes you can see the kids entering and leaving. Their kitchen is the exact size of one you would see in about average house. It's a lady who makes all of the food and she is absolutely amazing at it. I've lived in 3 major cities and I still reflect on the food I had from here. This is still my favorite Korean place to go to. It feels some homemade and cozy. If you miss family or friends from gone and just need some comfort from either the food or environment or both, this is the perfect place to go to. read more

Meh ... I had better Korean ... I know I am going to get a lot of heat and puns like "what do you know ... Chorong", but bring it on, I kinda like the heat since it's cold in Syracuse. First the location: Chorong house is located in a stand-alone​ plain building that looks decrepit​ and sketchy, especially at night. Unwelcoming would be a good adjective. The interior is not spectacular​ either. Very small space with 3-4 tables. Definitely a mom&pop joint, which is fine, in fact, I LOVE these small time restaurants because the food usually compensates​ for the appearance ... but chorong! The food: I wasn't impressed by the appetizer dishes ... There was mac n cheese?! The authenticity is beyond me. The one small scoop of mac n cheese wasn't even good! May I suggest adding in mozzarella​ stick to enhance the authenticity of the Korean​ cuisine​. The spicy beef stew was watery af. The egg was already poached​ when they served it...I want to crack my own egg yo. There was a bare​ minimum​ of substance in the soup ... a few chunk of beef and a few sprouts. The seafood​ pancake was decent. The price tag doesn't justify the quality of the food nor the ambiance​ of the place. If this was $, I​ would have gave some leniency. The gratuity is also automatically added to the bill, which I​ don't appreciate. I will decide how much I will tip dammit! I was hyped for this place due to the reviews, but I am very disappointed. What a small cute little find in Syracuse. While the exterior seems like a little rundown building, don't let that fool you! The food is quite delicious. I probably eat Korean food in NYC about 3 times a week and I have to say that this place was just as good if not better than some of the places I regularly eat at. My boyfriend came in around 8pm, so it was a little later than the normal dinner time. There was only one other customer in the restaurant and two ladies who worked there. It was empty the time we went but I was told by my boyfriend who's been there before that it tends to be quite full during normal dining hours. Once we got in, the two ladies who worked there attended to us right away with menus and then banchans. The banchans were a macaroni salad, potatoes, seaweed, kimchi, and green beans which were all very, very tasty. We devoured it all before the food even arrived. My boyfriend ordered the pork bulgogi and I ordered the kimchi jigae. The pork bulgogi was seasoned with gochujang, peppers, and onions and it was so well cooked. The pork was so tender and flavorful and every bite was just a delicious explosion in your mouth. The kimchi jigae was very well made as well. The kimchi itself was quite tasty and the broth was very well seasoned. It was very satisfying to eat after a cold day and I ate it completely to the last drop. Overall, I'm very satisfied with this restaurant. While the decor doesn't seem like much, the food is very authentic and tasty. Would definitely come again! read more

Came during commencement weekend for class of 2020, SU had the graduation ceremony a year later. We didn't make reservations anywhere and every restaurant was booked. We had come here a few years earlier. We sat right away and called a few minutes earlier and they said to come by. Our dinner here was great, awesome Korean food in an area where you wouldn't expect. I got two items, the pork bulgogi, and kimchi pancake. Let's talk about the bulgogi. I chose pork over beef because pork has a more pleasant creamy taste but with a bit more heft compared to its beef counterpart, which is more thinly shredded and complex texture. However, the pork seemed a bit undercooked and they may have pulled it out of the frying pan a bit too soon. The meat was a bit chewy and had a rubbery texture to it. I wish it had more of that smokey well done taste that is a tad more "fibery" for a lack of a better word. However, they got down the taste and the appearance, so I'll give them credit for that. 6/10 The kimchi pancake was amazing. If anything, just get that. The outside was crispy and had a great texture to it. Taste was savory, not too salty, and the kimchi had a good presence. The inside even had a custard like softness that melts in your mouth after you get through the crispy outside. The size was pretty good and the value was just decent. 8/10 However, I have to conclude with noting that the pricing was very stingy. Not only was it surprisingly expensive (comparing $12 bulgogi meal to Chorong's $18) , but they forcibly included 15% gratuity. In my books, that is not ok. Metaphorically, you do not ask someone to say thank you to you. Instead, the thank you is willingly given by the person served. read more

Blue house in the middle of no where uniquely serves up various Korean dishes. I agree, the prices are tad bit high. Seafood pancake comes in at whopping $12.99! But their menu varieties do keep you engaged throughout the semester if you're craving Korean mom's home cooking. They have fish soups ranging from $12.99, spicy snail dish at $17.99, LA galbi $18.99, jja-jang-myun $12.99 with $3 for extra noodle, squid dishes around $13.99, and 2 ppl hot pot starting $34.99. Saw 2 kids eating the hot pot and they looked huge and mighty delicious. Every time I've gone in for take out orders, there were kids eating inside even though the parking lot appeared empty. My favorite soup was the kal bi tang. It came with 2 gigantic short rib on the bone and plenty of meat, radish, and clear noodle. And the flavor was out of this world good. Kimchi soup seemed like it had butter in it, which threw me off. Thus the color wasn't as deep red and didn't have enough kimchi in it. Soft and chewy, tubes of deliciousnes,, nestled in the most delectable homemade fiery red sauce..... simply delicious Three stars however, for a big faux paux on the bimibap...which was supposed to be served in sizzling stoneware, which gives the most amazing layer of crunchy rice, but instead was cold, soggy and flavorless. My biggest beef with Chorong house is the 15 percent service charge that's automatically added to your bill. That being said, this place serves the best Korean food I know in Syracuse so far. The portions are large and flavorful, not overly salty, but warm and homey. I had a kalbi tang. There's only been one other place where I've had it that tastes good. Sadly, it was more expensive here in Syracuse than LA... Don't even waste your time going here. They are rude and weird. The whole set up of the place was very weird. I didn't even know where to go to order. They didn't even greet you when you first go in. Family run operation, nothing fancy in the dining room decor, but fantastic Korean food are with love by mom. It looks like a house - there is nothing special about the decor. It looks like they set up the entire restaurant in someone's kitchen. The entire neighborhood might be confusing because there are no nearby restaurants. But don't let that take away from the delicious food. My pepper pancake ( very spicy) and bibimbap were great. Bibimbap was on the lunch special for only 9 bucks. The pancake was about 14... if i knew the pancake was so big, i would have only ordered it. I wish they could make smaller portion pancakes for less money so I could actually order it as appetizer and not main meal. Gratuity is automatically added. I didnt mind it too much although surprised bc they were kind. The only issue is that as the name suggests this restaurant is actually a house converted to a eater. If i had known this, i would probably not go. For such a place, i feel the prices were expensive. I could actually hear them make my meal which was a bit weird. The taste was great though.
