Chosen Garden was certainly NOT an impressive restaurant .. it was most definitely not up to par with Chosen Island (in the 5-towns). The scenery was certainly spacious, but could potentially be crowded depending on where you sat. Surprisingly, many decided to dine here anyway. Though, when it comes to customer service, this place DOES NOT cut it !!! My girlfriend and I ordered the dinner special-- recommended by our waiter. The food quality was just barely average for their outrageous prices. Portion sizes were noticeably very small too. I am quite shocked with the overall high reviews. Do standards exist anymore? Admittedly, the scene was quite lively and the lighting was done well, but the food is no better than a mediocre kosher Chinese restaurant. I guess it's the illusion of serving average food on a plate in a well-decorated area that somehow allows the food to be better than it is ,,, and kosher restaurants always have horrendous standards. Mark would let out a slight chuckle. It's not often that I have a BAD experience with a restaurant. I did with "Cho-Sen Garden". After the check came, I paid and left a 15% tip. The waiter (with a monkey vest) comes over to pick up the check and then hovers over my girlfriend and me for a good 30 seconds and tells me that I didn't give a good enough tip. He demanded an 18% tip instead, and then proceeds to tell me that I should only do what I want. He never refilled our water once. Really??? OK. I tipped the 18%, called up AMEX and I wasn't held responsible for the charge. To "Cho-Sen Garden": Congrats on your wonderful staff. Don't expect our tips to pay the salary of your employees. I didn't know that this restaurant is in Jewish area so they don't have shrimp or any shellfish and my husband was hungry and didn't want to go to another place. Luckily we made reservations because the place was packed. Food was delicious and the portions very, very generous. The service was friendly. We were surprised that our mother's food was brought about 25 minutes before they served my sister and me. And when we got our food - combination of crispy beef and chicken - the chicken was hot but the beef was barely warm. Not sure what was going on in the kitchen that they made my mother's sesame chicken so quickly then took so long to make our dishes that the meat got cool by the time the chicken was ready. We were too full to even ask about desserts so I can't comment on those. And we took home lots of leftovers for tomorrow. read more

My family and i went for dinner on Saturday night. The restaurant had families and young couples. The service was good ( filling water and the nash stuff all the time). We had an egg roll, spring roll and soup for app. The egg roll is really big you can for shore split it for too. The other one were good too. For main course we had chicken with veg, lame with veg, sesame chicken and sechuan chicken ( medium spicy). All was reslllllly good! We couldn't finish the plate but we enjoy every bit! I tasted every meal and can say every one had a different souse which was specially good. I recommend to go there even if you are not kipping kosher. Absolutely amazing ! Very disappointed with my experience here. Food was decent in terms of sushi and soups. The orange chicken did not seem on par with what i usually expect. Service was mediocre as tables were unorganized and prepared very sloppy. They were following guidelines but the waiter demanded I leave a tip in cash when I asked if tip on card was ok, she refused. She forced me to add much more to what I had already intended on giving. I always tip regardless but when you force someone to tip you by cash which it is not a big deal but in a very forceful and demanding way, very unacceptable. Your party of five walks into a kosher Chinese restaurant on a Sunday evening. It is busier than usual and a wait is expected. Your party is followed in by other parties--some larger, some smaller--which are, by turns and for reasons unapparent, seated before yours. The host does not seem able to justify this arrangement, though you notice that the other parties seem to know the staff, and your party does not. Your party is then seated. Your party's waiter takes your party's orders very quickly and says, "We will bring your soups out soon, but please be patient: the kitchen is backed up." This is a literal phrasing whose humor is lost on the waiter and does not bode well for dinner but is polite and apparently accurate. After the server leaves, you begin waiting for a very long time. In lieu of quick service, your party is given bowls of crispy noodles. Lots of bowls of crispy noodles. You do not receive the steamed dumplings you ordered because, the waiter claims later, the restaurant has run out of dumplings. Though you ordered chicken and broccoli in a white sauce, your waiter brings chicken and broccoli in a brown sauce. When you tell the waiter you did not order the chicken and broccoli in a brown sauce, his response is, "This one is better." When you say, "We're not paying for this dish. We didn't order the chicken and broccoli in a brown sauce," and then ask for the original order, your request is met with brusque frustration. You receive your moo shu vegetables with two pancakes and a veritable mountain of stir fried vegetables. When you note that the vegetable-to-pancake ratio is insensible, you are told the dinner always comes with two pancakes. When you ask for more pancakes, you are told you will be charged for them. You then wait for more pancakes for a very long time. For the duration of dinner, you will not receive the sesame chicken you ordered. When you ask about it, the waiter tells you that the restaurant has run out of chicken and that you can order something else. You laugh for a moment, but then you see that the waiter is being serious. He has claimed a Chinese restaurant filled with people many hours before closing has run out of chicken. This does not make any sense, but there is nothing to do but ask for something different. When you ask if there are any bar-b-que spare ribs, the waiter responds that, no, the restaurant has run out of those as well. You then tell the waiter to scratch the sesame chicken and the dumplings from the bill. The waiter does not exactly apologize. You are not exactly unhappy either. After all, you have now eaten four bowls of crispy noodles. The soup you ate was reasonably good. A few minutes later, you notice that another table is being served sesame chicken. You do a double take and ask your in-laws, "Is that sesame chicken at the next table over?" They confirm that, yes, it is sesame chicken. Your waiter returns and you ask, "Is that table eating sesame chicken?" The waiter then says that yes, it is sesame chicken, and tells you that you yourself did not want the sesame chicken. When you and your entire table say, "You just said that the restaurant ran out of chicken," the waiter seems confused and realizes he is revealed as a lying sack of shit. He then claims that he is under a lot of pressure and that the restaurant is very busy. You do your best not to call the man a lying sack of shit and, by some miracle, you succeed. But he is indeed a lying sack of shit, and you have every right to tell him so. You realize that, of the items you and your family ordered, a full 30% either did not arrive or were incorrectly delivered. The remaining 70% of the meal was fairly good but unconscionably expensive considering the poor service and mendacious nature of the restaurant's staff. You come to understand that you have spent some two hours at a Chinese restaurant where everyone you have interacted with is either dishonest or incompetent or both. You wonder if this is how you wished to spend your evening. You wish, in retrospect, you had called your waiter a lying sack of shit. This, for reasons unclear, seems like it might have eased the frustration of dealing with the grossly asinine experience of trying to eat a meal at the Cho-Sen Garden in Forest Hills. read more

Cho-Sen is a great kosher Chinese place located in Forest Hills. I do feel it is somewhat over-priced, but now it is the only kosher Chinese place in the area, so I will have to go there for my Chinese fix. I have to give them kuddos for making themselves kosher for Passover. My husband and I have eaten there several times, but most recently we went there on Passover & it was delicious. They created a special farfel that was like fried rice with farfel instead of rice. It was truly unique and very yummy. The kosher for Pesach General Tsos chicken was also very impressive - it tasted just as good as regular General Tsos - the sauce was so yummy and the batter was really great. The quality of the meat is also great, which is I guess why they are a little pricier than your typical Chinese restaurant. The food on regular days has also always been very good. I've tried many of their dishes and always been happy. The only dish I didn't care too much for was the sesame chicken I once ordered - simply because I felt it had too much sauce - next time I'd ask for less sauce and I'm sure I'd be completely satisfied. Sushi here is also good, as are the mixed drinks. Definitely a great place to go with friends or for a alcohol-worthy special occasion. The decor is a little washed out and needs to be updated. Additionally, this place can be very crowded at times which may be uncomfortable for some. I like to sit in the back room if possible so that you feel a bit more intimate. Came here with the in-laws for lunch during their little stay here in NYC after a nice little venture into the city. It's not far from home, I still don't come here often because I'm not a big fan of Chinese food. But this is a great place to come with the Glatt Kosher folk which is why I gave them four stars. They are monitored by VHQ and the establishment seems pretty clean. We ordered off the lunch specials menu. They first serve you an abundance of wonton crisps with sweet and sour sauce. I began with a hot and sour soup, which I always enjoy here. For the entrees we ordered a few large dishes which came with rice and soups. We had Chicken Broccoli, Sesame Chicken (both self explanatory) and Hunan Beef, this originally came spicy but we had them make it mild, because Im not a fan of the spicy cuisine ( yet to try Indian Food) , and had plenty of veggies (my fav). Cant say the same for chicken and corn. Bit too much corn flavor, just didnt taste right for me. The entree was very good. Just enough portion for two pple to share. Real pieces of chicken breast, and shitake mushrooms toped off with water chestnuts and peanuts. Very delicious. Service was very good. We were always taken care of and wait for food wasnt long at all. Honestly, great place for kosher dining. Good food and service. Fantastic chinese food. We ordered takeout, and I've never had chicken and broccoli that was so fresh, tender, juicy, and tasty. And the pieces of chicken were gigantic compared to other chinese joints. Everything tasted like it was home made and prepared well and not in a "fast food" sort of way. I've been eating at cho arm for many years now. They're good is great. Their wonton soup is delicious and the meat inside doesn't feel like a brick that's been sitting in the freezer for years, it's actually delicious. Often times we have our food for take out but when we eat in we always receive amazing service. They're very accommodating and are extremely willing to please and provide everything you ask for. They know what they're doing and they put forth great efforts. Some of the other dishes I'd recommend include the crispy shredded beef, chicken and broccoli, all their lo mains, sweet and sour chicken, and beef teriyaki. All very good and perfectly cooked. Their sushi is also very tasty and they have a great turnover so it's always fresh. The only dish I'm not so fond of is the sesame chicken. I call this the curse of the Kosher restaurant - a Shanda if ever there was one. Had relatively high hopes, based on other Yelp reviews, recommending Cho-Sen Garden. Though not bad by any means, the restaurant serves merely serviceable Chinese food and sushi at a premium price. As with many Kosher restaurants, you can find infinitely better food at non-kosher restaurants for less money. However, you're kind of stuck if you require Kosher food. There's truly no longer any reason why a Kosher restaurant can't make exquisite food and charge the same price. But most don't. And Cho-Sen is no different. Entrees at a Chinese restaurant in the $20 plus range aren't necessary, nor are appetizers for over $10.00, unless the food is truly spectacular and innovative and the food at Cho-Sen isn't.
