The only issue was the cold pool was not cold at all--not even cool. It was warm so not much reprieve from the hot tub. How have I not discovered this before? I came here with my mom and a friend. I wouldn't say it was a "secret" because the private pools were definitely being utilized and there were a couple people at the communal pool, but in no way did it feel crowded, or busy. In fact, in view of the space being utilized, it felt magically private. I visit Ashland a few times a year, and stumbled on to this website by chance. I wanted to do something that was peaceful and relaxing. I was unsure about a hot soak in the middle of summer, but this was such a great experience. The private pools looked great, but we felt really comfortable in the communal space. We soaked in the hot pool. In the heat of mid-summer, the "cold" pool was warm, but a lovely contrast to the warm water of the soaking pool. In fact, when the evening breeze kicked up, it was a really great place to sit. You also have the option of the dry sauna, or steam room. So, it was a great option of "what kind of relaxation do I want now?" After we were done, we went to the lounge for some quick bites, which proved to be a perfect light dinner, with a nice, small, but cultivated beverage collection. The staff were so helpful and pleasant during our time. I will for sure factor in an extra day on my trips to Ashland just to find my Zen and my center in this amazing place. read more

What a gem. I love the Japanese aesthetic sense in all things. From the beautiful hand-planed doors, the peaceful ambience, clean, hot waters, and the option to enjoy meeting others in the public pool or have the additional restful seclusion of a private tub. I believe one of the world's oldest businesses is a Japanese hot springs hotel. This is a wonderful place to treat yourself, slow down, and take in some essential hydrotherapy. Well, ten years later, we got the cucumber water! Revisited Chozu and had a much better experience. The only downside really was how crowded it was, and even in the private bath area, it was noisy due to other customers. Not much to be done about that. The service was much improved from our last visit in 2015, and other than the crowd noise, everything was relaxing and perfect for unwinding. Will definitely come back again. read more

The massage was wonderful! I'm a 17 year old woman and my mom gave me this as a gift before I leave for college. The pools are absolutely beautiful and the saunas were great however you should probably take a dip in the cold pool before going in because it gets hot, and the food along with food service was great! I was a little nervous about the massage but the lady was very nice and respectful about the boundaries I had because I don't really people touching some parts of my body such as my thighs and ribs so it was nice that she accommodated to what I wanted. CLOSED Mondays/Tuesdays. The Bath Gardens: There is nothing like it in the general vicinity. This is for a relaxing/efficient 90-minute Self-Health session. Good for introverts, day of relaxation, quick relief from the stress of the Holiday Season. They have: -Hot pool (open air, open pool) -Cold plunge (open air, single use) -Steam room (mens and womens) -Dry hot sauna (open seating) Wednesdays are "discounted" and IF you bring all of your own stuff: swim suit, shower sandals, towel and empty water bottle... $25 for 90-minutes. It seems like the right amount of time, when solo. Everything was clean and well-maintained. I did see a piece of chewed gum under a rock; I checked before I leaned back against a rock to lay my hair out and outta the water. They no longer have cucumber water, but they do have the standard gym fill-your-bottle water dispenser located outside the common area. I've never had a negative experience here. I usually come alone in the day time and have never been bothered. $25 on Wednesdays (bring your own towel, swim suit, shower shoes and water bottle). $30 for 90-minutes on all other days. read more

My review echoes all of the useful points highlighted in Jen's review. GET THERE EARLY! The check-in process, which involves looking over and signing a set of rules, looking over the poolside menu for snacks and drinks, a quick introductory tour of the place (if it's your first time there), storing your stuff in the locker room, and showering before your soak should take you about 15-20min. If you arrive late, all of that cuts into your 90min time slot. My partner and I arrived late, so we had less than 60min in the private hot pool. We expected our host to come back with a poolside menu because we couldn't make up out minds while looking at the menu inside but he never did come by--we were anticipating ordering a snack and a drink! The cold plunge pool is much smaller than the private pool, and holds two people comfortably sitting next to each other and another person or two standing up on the opposite side of the cold plunge pool. We didn't take advantage of the sauna option but hope to next time. The extra time that we were given in the "garden area" is the area outside of the private pool area, if I'm understanding that correctly. So... no garden of any sort to walk through. We used our extra time in the cold plunge pool. The shower after the soak was divine. Great water pressure; shampoo, conditioner, soap, and lotion provided; a hair dryer is also available to use too. I felt very pampered, but I forgot the private pool price was $44 *per person* instead of for two people until payment time--oops! It was worth the price for some private time with my partner, as there were plenty of people in the public pool (probably because of the 4th of July weekend.) I'll go with the public pool option to save some money next time and use that for their snacks and drinks instead. This place is kinda cool, though not for its cold plunge (which is not that cold) The vicinity is amazing, and some of the snacks are nice. It's definitely not a tea garden. I think it's more like a spa, that serves tea that tries terribly hard to be Japanese but is kinda just... bad (cheap, poor quality, chinese mass produced or American organic that is lower quality but grown maybe organically) If the cold plunge was cold, and they didn't use chlorine, and got some marginally decent tea leaves, this place would be literally 2 stars better. I had just visted Japan a month ago and now reminising the Onsen bath experience there. Found this bath house in Ashland that has a feel of Japan. I was given a pair of slippers, a plush towel, a spa wrap towel and a dose of salt. The dose of salt is to mix with soap for body washing. The bathrooms are stocked with soaps, shampoo, conditioner, lotions. It is gender specific, very spacious to hang and store belongings; lockers are availible. It is decorated with some pretty mural tiles. During the day time, we are to wear a spa wrap towel with buttons and pocket into the tubs, I find it cumbersome. After 6pm, clothings are optional. I don't know if I want to be naked with men who are not my husband. I was told there are multitude of benefits to alternate between hot and cold hydrotherapy. Start with longer hot sessions, then refresh with short cold sessions and repeat. *softens and tightens the skin *improve artery elasticity and blood cirulation *reduce swelling and muscle soreness *removes toxins from muscles *tones muscles *decrease congestion *strengthens immune system *boost endorphin production *boost energy After about half hour of soaking, I was done with dragging the heavy towel/parachute in and out of the water. My husband and I were looking forward to spending several relaxing hours enjoying the pools and getting massages. I use a walker and have a service dog, and we were denied access. Our first encounter was with a rude and irritable young woman who was annoyed to have to open the back door, which was the only accessible entry way. I politely explained that ADA required accommodation, but neither she nor the manager were willing to allow us in. We have taken my service dog to spas in California and he is extremely well behaved and we have never had a problem. Very disappointing! read more

Be respectful and cancel your appointment in advance if you don't plan on attending; otherwise, they'll charge you the full amount. When we arrived for our appointments, we heard someone on the phone who was going through having to pay for an appointment he/she hadn't shown up for. Anyhow, this is a cute, quaint little spa. Nice-sized locker room, but tight if more than a few people are in there at a time. The quality of the massage I got (60 min deep tissue) was WONDERFUL! The therapist I had was quite skilled and helped relax my back substantially. Post-massage, using the bath and plunge pool was a nice touch. The plunge pool wasn't very cold, but the attendant we talked to who was walking through was telling us they are working on that for the future. Customer service here was on point - everyone from the front desk, to the staff, and the therapists was kind, friendly, and responsive. I've taken girlfriends here and have also reserved a private pool for my partner and I, which is clothing optional in a much more intimate setting. My friend Diane H. and I stopped by around 8:30pm on a Wednesday night, just in time to pay the $19 Wed special to use the facilities (sauna + hot pool + cold pool + showers) for 90 minutes! A few things that are worth knowing if you've never been before... ** They provide plenty of drinking water here - it's important to stay hydrated with the sauna and hot pool! ** Clothing is OPTIONAL after 6pm. You're given a terrycloth wrap to wear IN THE POOL if you'd like. However....this IS Ashland, so most people we saw were completely NAKED. In fact, Diane and I were the only people in our bathing suits and while nobody seemed to care, we weren't expecting to be surrounded by so much nudity that night! Just set your expectations appropriately and you won't be taken aback. ** It seems like most people shower before and after, so consider bringing a change of clothes for afterwards. **Per their website, you can get $2 off if you bring your own towel My only qualm is the customer service we received upon arriving. The girl behind the desk wasn't welcoming and seemed reluctant to help us, bordering on straight-up IRRITATED to find that we wanted to check-in. NOT VERY RELAXING HMM... LUCKILY.....the hot pool is SUPER relaxing even on a cold and rainy night! Even when it got more popular, the pool itself has little nooks so you can have your own little space. Unfortunately, on my last visit it felt less cared for, less respected, and much less relaxing. I walked in to a locker room that smelled like someone has just smoked a massive bong rather than the smell of eucalyptus or lavender. The facility was crowded and the soaking pool was filled with dwb from trees and plants. Lastly, when I went into the dry sauna there was a man sniffling and hacking, as though he was trying to clear out a cold. I expected more authentic Japanese food, and was hoping for a bigger menu. The food is what I think was gotten from Costco, then microwaved with some presentation. Even the server told us that our food took a little longer, because their microwave stopped working for a minute, and they had to fix it. We have been on the road for many days so our muscles were needing a little TLC. Specifically looking for a decent priced Japanese style spa experience. Firstly, know that the pools are outdoors so it's a little cooler in the winter months. (considering the heat of the sauna, we were completely okay with this.) The fresh air is very nice. It was actually sprinkling rain slightly which added to the relaxing sounds. With the $25/ea included is a dry sauna, small cold pool, and hot pool. These are public and there is also a steam room in each private bathroom. We arrived before 6pm not realizing this is when the open nudity is allowed. So we were provided wraps to wear which weren't too bad. Bathrooms were nice and many products are provieded including shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and lotion. We personally brought our own because we enjoy our personal products. Overall we absolutely loved this spot. It was certainly worth it for us. We also had delicious tea and food afterwards. Then they called us in for 1 hr Swedish massages which was amazing, the masseuse really knew what she was doing, my body felt so relieved after. There was a sauna in the women's changing room so I decided to break some sweat before I shower and everything. The couples treat came with complementary bento lunch, tea or sake which was delicious!
