If staying in The Heldrich, this could be a good option for an evening meal or cocktail and an excellent one for breakfast. The service overall was nice. There are some complaints. For starter, it said it opens at 4, but the day we checked in they didn't start food service until 6:30. That's something that should have been mentioned at check in. It was pouring and we would've eaten beforehand, rather than wait. Also, there is a promotion advertised on the site about watching nfl and rutgers football. We went to watch the playoffs and take advantage of the special only to be told the promotion ended in November, which doesn't make sense because the NFL still has games, and it's on their site! Jennifer had to talk to 2 managers before it was resolved, neither manager ever came to explain or talk. Also, it's advertised in the room to be open at 4 on Sundays. Once again, we planned to go and those plans were derailed because it is closed on Sundays. We did have the breakfast buffet before checking out, which was definitely worth it. BEWARE! This restaurant is under new management with a completely different menu which has little resemblance to what you will find on their website or on Yelp. This review seems to be the first since 2020, and I think it is safe to ignore any reviews before 2022. Big changes for a little restaurant with no public notice. (There is ABSOLUTELY NO EXCUSE for not having an updated menu on their website!) BEWARE that menu options did are not that many. Of the three (3? - Really!) appetizers on the menu, one was not available and the other was a basket of fries (which is hardly an appetizer!) Entree choices were just similarly limited to 3 different salads. pizza, or burgers (served with those "appetizing" fries!) That's it. What we ordered was good, but with few options. BEWARE that I and some others before me found the chairs to be less comfortable for eating than for lounging. They are probably great chairs for a bar, but a poor choice for a restaurant. (I usually eat closer to the table.) BEWARE that our service was provided solely by one bartender who had no other assistance. He mostly did an adequate job, despite being overtaxed. For a burger joint, it was certainly not "fast" food. Had the restaurant been busier, I'm not certain that the service would have been at all satisfactory. BEWARE that a 18.5% gratuity is automatically added to your bill without any mention of that fact on the menu. That amount is not unreasonable, but it seems unfair not to make customers aware of this policy before ordering. I would have awarded 4 STARS on the basis of the food quality alone, which is the main feature I want in a restaurant. We had garlic parmesan chicken wings for an appetizer and burgers for our entrees. (I'll bet you could have guessed that from the menu options.) The chicken was quite tasty, but a little tough and dry. The burgers were tasty, succulent, and cooked precisely to our preference (medium and rare.) Those "appetizing" fries were good, too. The LOCATION, close to the State Theatre, is another plus for this little restaurant, but in all fairness there are many other great dining options just a short walk away. Finally, BEWARE that Christopher's no longer honors dining certificates sold in their name through Restaurants.com. The manager informed me with a an apology, but with no offer to comp any part of our meal, even the iced tea. I expected better treatment than that, but I didn't actually press him on it further. The dining certificate was one reason I chose this restaurant, and I will probably choose a different one next time. BOTTOM LINE, if you are looking for a good burger or simple salad, this is not a bad spot for a bite and a drink before catching a show at the State Theatre. Just don't expect much more. read more

Overall unimpressed with our dining experience. 9 people (6 adults, 3 children) had a lunch reservation on Sunday...for some reason we were seated in the bar instead of the restaurant. While lounge chairs are nice, it's hard for the elderly to sit in them and eat (at two round tables pushed together). The food was quite average. Flatbread pizza, soggy and over sauced. Caesar salad came out with no croutons. Grilled cheese with tomato soup seemed acceptable to the people that had it. 5-6 entrees were served and then about 15 minutes later the remaining 3-4 were delivered. Manager proactively took 2 kids meals off the bill due to service issues (which was nice of him). Food just left us wishing we had eaten somewhere else however the proximity to the State Theater won us over (that won't happen again). read more

It seems this "restaurant" doesn't exist anymore. The only place to dine is in the bar area, with a "bar menu." I knew this going in. What I didn't expect was the absence of service. My message for a reservation was not returned. Neither bartender acknowledged us initially. The upholstered low chairs were quite wobbly, with loose legs, and in need of new stuffing. The menu is not extensive, but it's enough. I ordered the garlic short ribs with creamy polenta. The flavor of garlic was undetectable. And the polenta -- a favorite of mine -- was complely missing, replaced by plain ol' rice. I'm not sure why waiters/servers bother to ask if everything's ok because they don't want any negative replies -- it might mean they should do something about it. I told the bartender -- because there is no wait staff at Christopher's -- about the lack of garlic and polenta. He barely had any reaction. It was like, "Oh well. Too bad." Not his responsibility I guess. The short rib and accompanying carrots and string beans was tasty. New Brunswick could realy use another middle option for dinner. Came here to try the restaurant week special of $30 for a 4 course meal. I previously had the buffet lunch here, which was very nice. So I was hoping that dinner would be equally good. Unfortunately we were disappointed. The appetizer of grilled gulf shrimp was pretty good. The salad was a good effort, with added avocado and some mandarin orange pieces. But the greens were not fresh. For the entree, we had the short rib. The meat was dry, the meal wasn't hot. Oddly, it came with corn on the cob, which didn't seem to pair well with this dish. My daughter had the salmon, which was also a bit dry. For dessert - the lemon parfait and the strawberry shortcake were both good; although not exceptional. While it was a big meal and we walked away very full, it was not the culinary experience I had hoped it to be. read more

I eat world wide and always get miffed when an establishment takes advantage of me. Unfortunately, it happened here. So enjoying my meal, the comes the time to pay the bill. I find this charge of $1.98 labeled PAF. I ask the waiter what is it. He shrugged his shoulders and said maybe a Property Access Fee. So what is a Property Access Fee? Again shrugged shoulders. I know better than argue corporate policy with a waiter at 8:30pm. So I announce my new policy. Anytime I get charged for stupid items which I did not order, I am reducing the tip by that amount. I apologized to the waiter and told him it was my policy, and he could communicate my dissatisfaction, and his with the owners. Getting taken advantage of, even for amounts less than the price of my Starbucks this overrides anything I might have reported good about this place. Christopher's Restaurant and Christopher's Lounge are located inside The Heldrich Hotel. They're separated from each other by a hallway. I've eaten at Christopher's on two occasions prior to our wedding reception. Customer service was always top notch, food was excellent, and we felt welcome and appreciated. When we were looking around for a restaurant to host our wedding reception, Christopher's caught our attention. It's a large, modern, open, and intimate space and was the right fit for us. Throughout the wedding planning period from 2010-2012, we worked with Andrew Dale, the Director of Catering at The Heldrich. Christopher's has sheer windows, which allow light in, but no one can really see what's going on from the outside. The restaurant is divided into three sections, separated by banquettes. We had a parquet dance floor set up closest to the entrance of the restaurant and two sections of seating for our 111 guests. Our DJ set up by the dance floor and brought his own speakers. You can definitely hear the music in the restaurant! Two slight drawbacks to this space are the black ceilings. This makes photo taking challenging. But just ask your photographer to bring an extra light or two. The banquettes divide the sections of the restaurant and aren't able to be moved. That makes it difficult to see what's going on on the dance floor, but hey, instead of watching, you should be dancing! We knew these things before signing our contract, so it didn't bother us too much, just something to consider. Their kitchen is open so you can see your food being prepared. We considered having a brunch buffet, but my parents are a little too traditional for that! The staff set everything up, the parquet dance floor, table and settings, menus, and even our centerpieces. We paid $126 per person for EVERYTHING, cocktail hour, food, beer & wine, set up, parking, room rental. Weddings are expensive, but priceless when it come to celebrating with all of the people you love. We had our reception here on Saturday, September 29, 2012. The cocktail hour began at 12:00PM in Christopher's Lounge. When our guests arrived, they were led to the lounge and greeted with butler passed hors d'oeuvres, a cheese plate, cold cuts, vegetables, and open bar with our signature cocktail of champagne with a splash of bourbon. My husband and I arrived towards the end of the cocktail hour, but we still had some time to nibble and sip on a few cocktails. The lounge was a great place to host the cocktail hour. It's modern, contemporary, and is bright during the day. There are a few flat panels, tons of seating, bar stools, etc. I wanted to have a slideshow playing on one of the flat panel tvs during the cocktail reception, but apparently it was going to cost $200 for the technician to set it up. (Seriously? I could've set it up...even on my wedding day!) Oh well. Everyone enjoyed the food, which is more important, of course. Our escort cards were placed on a rectangular table right outside the door to the lounge. After the cocktail hour, our guests made their way towards the restaurant for our sit down lunch. The hallway is very lovely with the colorful hanging globes on the wall. (Hint, it's a great place for a photo!) Here's our menu: First course Romaine Lettuce with toasted almonds and honey vinaigrette Main course Seared French Cut Chicken, Grilled Filet Mignon, Salmon, Eggplant Lentil Boat with Red Pepper Coulis, smashed potatoes and vegetables. Dessert Sliced fresh fruit platter and vegan cupcakes (provided from The Tiny Bit Bakery) I loved the dressing of the the salad! But I was disappointed with my main course. The food was DEFINITELY not what we had at the tasting. It tasted like it was prepared the day before and reheated on the day of our wedding. Boo! I guess I was expecting it to be freshly made. Nonetheless, I ate the meal and brought home my leftovers! The sliced fresh fruit was a nice touch. I took that home too! I don't like wasting food. The staff were nice. The waiter for our sweetheart table wasn't as friendly as Mombaye (not sure of the spelling). Mombaye waited on us during the tasting. He's awesome! But at least they don't throw the dishes down like they do at some banquet halls. (!) Overall, 4.5 stars. Do you want to find yourself mildly disappointed after trying to hunt down NJ's best burgers? If so, come to Christopher's. I got suckered in by NJ Monthly's list of best burger restaurants in NJ and Christopher's made #2 in the state with #1 in central Jersey. Thus it was worth a look. We began with the frog legs appetizer which was fried and dry. I should've known not to order it since frog legs are best steamed so the remaining juices allow it be more succulent. Then comes the burger. It's sandwiched between two small slices of texas toast with some microgreens topping off the beef. Now I'm not sure if it was the braised short rib or the burger beef, but one of those two made the burger incredibly salty! Or maybe there was a new chef in the kitchen who overlooked the seasoning since we came on a Wednesday night and the place was deserted. I'm not sure if the burger was meant to be salty but overall I grant Christopher 3.5 stars. I can't put this on par with Stage Left's burger across the street, which I gave 4 stars to, so hence my 3-star choice. read more

My sister and I had a late dinner here while staying at the hotel. I can speak much for the ambiance because they were having some sort of event and it was swarmed with people . Nonetheless we were seated at a table with oversized chairs and were able to order dinner right before 11pm (which is the cut off for kitchen) I ordered Fettuccini Alfredo with Salmon, My sister had the NY strip. My pasta was kind of bland but with a little added cheese and pepper it turned into a tasty dish, the pasta was cooked perfectly . The Salmon did however seem like it could have been frozen portions . You know kind of flat not very fleshy in the middle. It wasn't bad it just didn't taste fresh and plump. My sister enjoyed the steak. **So overall food would have been 3.5 stars for me The Cosmos (Martini) !!! The drinks gave them an extra boost up. They were Good . They used Ketel 1 and Cointreau . I attended the Rutgers Distinguished Alumni Gala at the Heldrich back in May and the Gala food was catered by Christopher's, which is attached to the hotel. Not knowing what to expect, I ordered the Filet Mignon off of the set menu and WOW! The Filet was cooked to perfection (IE Medium Rare) and was, quite possibly, one of the most delicious cuts of meat I have ever tasted! I know this place is expensive, but if you have money to spend or are planning an elegant event and can't be bothered to travel into NYC, definitely go here! read more

The restaurant has a lovely atmosphere, the space is huge. But maybe it's a little TOO big, I waited longer than necessary for a glass of wine, which came out almost frozen. It just seemed like my waiter had to travel long distances to pour me the glass, maybe he went to Alaska? The waiter seemed out of it, for the most part. I had to ask for bread (something they automatically give you) and by the time I got it, it came out warm but hard (probably reheated) and with my entree. Granted, the entree didn't take very long. the food however, was delicious. I really enjoyed the salmon over the salad as I waited for my wine to defrost. Breakfast The only acceptable things here are the diy waffle machine, yogurt, and made to order omelet station. I had buffet eggs the first day and they were powdery, couldn't even finish them. The potato hash was soggy, bagels are a little hard, and fruit wasn't cold. Lunch The fish entree is usually good, protein is a toss up. The apps are typically questionable. Very friendly staff and very attentive. My girlfriend and I ate here at 7:30 on a Wednesday and were the only people in the entire restaurant that seats 372. I ordered Steak Frites which was cooked very well and served with French fries. My girlfriend ordered Pork Belly Mac and Cheese which she said tasted phenomenal. Our group was scheduled to have lunch here, since we were having meetings in the hotel all day long. Now, I don't know if it was because they were cooking for the masses, but the food was not that good. First of all the buffet had a very strange selection. Normally there is some sort of a theme, this buffet was all over the place. They offered salad, Spanish rice, BBQ salmon, roasted chicken, some kind of spicy steak, and roast beef wraps. I only had the rice, chicken, and steak. The rice was hard, the chicken was extremely fatty, and the steak was chewy. Even though I had a bad experience with the lunch, I still tried the dessert. They had a couple of different cakes, cookies, churros, and napoleons. I opted for a couple of different cookies and a churros - I figured they would be the best best. Wrong. Cookies were super hard and tasted strange and the churros were super greasy. Needless to say I didn't each much of my meal. I had a bag of chips and twix bar later on as my lunch. read more

I made a reservation which was entirely unnecessary because when we arrived, there was only one other party of two sitting in the rather large dining area. It was nice having the whole place to ourselves for the majority of our meal. The pictures are misleading because this place can seat a lot. I thought it was odd that a couple with a reservation for two was seated at a table for four though. Food: A bit pricier than what I was expecting. We each had an entree, but we shared the flatbread appetizer, and one of the less expensive bottles of chardonnay. Their cheapest wine was still very good. Everything was delicious. My girlfriend got the chicken, but really loved the wild mushroom flatbread with goat cheese (her favorite). I got the tuna, which was a nice cut. The servings were generous. The place is in an ideal spot for hanging out and talking, its very lounge like and comfortable. The service just wasn't there! My date chose this spot for its classiness and lack of noise in comparison to the other spots nearby. I got there, was asked right away by the waiter if I wanted a drink. I had been talking to my date for the first 5 minutes and had not really thought of what I wanted to order, so I asked if he could give me a moments to look at menu. I took the menu read it , decided and put it down. Generally, that is the cue to come over and ask again.....it took about 15 min before I was able to order again. Waiting staff seemed nice and attentive although we were the only table in the whole restaurant that night. And the reason for the 2 star rating was the food. Half the table's food came out cold. Good (not Great) Burger. Horrible service. I went to Christopher's on Sunday Feb, 20th for lunch with a group of 12 people. A handful of us wanted to try the featured short-rib brioche burger that was featured in NJ Monthly as the #2 Burger in NJ. Ok, briefly about the burger. OVERRATED! The tender short-rib meat atop the burger is this sandwich's savior. Well, seasoned, juicy and accompanied by carmalized onions. The 1/2 pound patty is well-seasoned and flavored, but if you order it anything less than medium-well, it's too juicy for the bookend brioche slices of bread. Especially the lower slice that the patty sits on will get too soggy to buttress the entire burger. Since I was with a larger group, the brioche slices weren't all consistent. Some were too thin, some were too thick. Now to the bad news. I'm an easy-going understanding diner, and I understand slow service. But, this was HORRIBLE, slow service. I even understand that they were understaffed on this particular Sunday afternoon. But once our orders were placed, it took over 45 mins to get our food. In between that time, not a word of the status of our food, no apologies, empty glasses of water. We had to try to get the attention of the manager to eventually have our waitress come tell us that our food should be another 10 mins. This was after 35 mins with no server to be found. But, No apology. When our food arrived at our table, some of the burgers were incomplete. Some had no ketchup (served on the side), some had no carmelized onions. My friend who ordered the burger rare, shockinly and unexplicable received a well-done one. There seemed to be no sympathy from the staff while all this was occuring. Just an "ok, we'll take care of it." Note to Christopher's: if you're understaffed, it's fine, diners will understand. But give diners a bit more attention and care, regardless. Conclusion: If you want a better burger, go across the street to Stage Left (3rd place ranking, but shouldn't be) and amazing service. read more

Went here for Valentine's Day a few years ago (so I am writing this off of memories that particularly stood out) and booked it late because every other restaurant was already booked. I now know why this place had openings, and when we arrived it was not very crowded during prime dinner hours. The service was the worst I have ever had in my life. It took my boyfriend and I over 3 hours there to eat our meals, the night was shot. The waiter never wished me a Happy Vday which is always a red flag. To start, the waiter did not come to our table for the longest time and then after we placed our orders, he came back not once, not twice, but three times to re-ask what we got again. This is an expensive/fancy 3 course meal on a romantic holiday -- unacceptable. When the food finally came out after like...2 hours of waiting in an EMPTY restaurant it was COLD and not even good. Had steak for main course and it was rubbery and tasted awful. I don't have a history of ripping restaurants apart on Yelp, but I need to steer foodies away from giving this place the time of day. Went here with some friends to grab some drinks at the bar to celebrate a wedding. It's a nice small place with a comfortable atmosphere. There are couches around so relaxing and mingling. It's definitely a nice getaway from the noisy and overcrowded bars on Easton Ave! We didn't try the food here, only the bar. Went here a couple of times during our visit in town. The bar is cool and the drinks aren't bad. The layout is kind-of unique. We had some late night apps served up for an after the wedding party that we attended at the Heldrich. They were mediocre at best, I didn't like the chicken wings and everything else was barely warm. The bartenders seemed nice, there weren't many other staff throughout our area, so empties sat for quite a bit until we removed them ourselves. The lunch menu is equally satisfying I have been with people that greatly enjoyed the lobster salad and chicken quesadilla. Dinner has a small but good menu. I just got back from this place. i went there to check out their burger which was raved about in NJ Magazine (1st place for Middlesex Co.) Burger was mediocre at best. What really killed it for me was the fact that the taste was bland. None of the topping added anything to the flavor. I don't know how it got placed so high on this burger rating!?!?! I would not go back to eat the burger b/c there was nothing at all special about it. I could get a better burger - and I'm serious about this - from 5 guys. I have to say that the service was a total disappointment. I came her for a work meeting and the service was extremely slow and the food was horrible I ordered the mash with chicken and the mash was pure salt. I would not recommended this place to anyone. read more

My 3 star rating reflects a blend of the good and bad. The food is good but not exceptional, the atmosphere in the wine bar/lounge (you can get dinner there) is very nice and the service is generally poor. I enjoy having a drink and light fare in the bar/lounge area and have also enjoyed the Sunday breakfast buffet. Just don't go here if you're in a rush because service is not their strong suit. read more
