We recently visited, and while our server was excellent, our experience with the hosts was unfortunately very disappointing. I didn't get the names of the two hosts, but from the moment we arrived, they came across as rude and unwelcoming. When I first put my name on the waitlist, I politely asked how long the wait would be. Instead of giving me an estimate or any helpful information, one host simply responded with, "You'll get a text message," in a flat tone and immediately moved on. When we received the text and checked back in, the host asked which package we wanted. I asked what the differences were, and she only pointed out the two most expensive options. When I looked at the other packages on the back of the menu, she abruptly said, "Those don't have this, this, and this," in a noticeably irritated tone, rather than taking the time to explain the options. We initially selected one package but decided to switch to another after discussing it. The host seemed visibly annoyed by this, even though choosing between the available options is part of the ordering process. As we were finishing our decision, another host walked out and loudly called our name. We immediately responded, "We're here," and both hosts smirked at us in a way that made us feel like we had done something wrong. Our server provided outstanding service, which we truly appreciated, but the interaction with the hosts left a negative first impression. Chubby Cattle in Irvine is a fun, lively Korean BBQ spot that my wife and I took our two boys (ages 3 and 8 months) to this week. The ambiance is really energetic -- walking in feels like stepping into the streets of a busy Korean market. It's colorful, bustling, and full of life. It's a very cool vibe, though probably not the best choice for a quiet date night. Service was solid and attentive throughout. I especially liked the ordering screens at the table and how they moved beverages, rice, and other common items to a convenient self-serve section. That helped things move smoothly. We didn't have any special drinks this time, but the soft drinks were good. The food was excellent overall. The meats were the highlight -- we did the Diamond menu and really enjoyed the A5 and thin-cut wagyu. They cooked up beautifully. We also tried the sushi, which was good but not quite at the level of a dedicated sushi restaurant. The selection was excellent across the board. At about $100 per person it's not cheap, but we appreciated that young kids eat free based on height, so our three-year-old didn't cost anything extra. That said, it isn't the most kid-friendly setup. You have to leave your stroller outside, the quarters are pretty tight, and toddlers don't always do great with cook-at-the-table concepts. I've tried a few Chubby Cattle locations so far and this one is definitely at the top of the list in terms of quality of food and service. We started off with server, Kenny, who did an awesome job giving us a refresher on the menu. He was very helpful and knowledgable about the memberships and promos. He was relieved by Alex, who was also fantastic! He explained some of the dishes, what made the location special and pretty much cooked all of our food, which we thought was super efficient. They were both great conversationalists which added to the experience. Their A5 Wagyu was melt in your mouth deliciousness. I wished we had more. The scallops with the citrus marinade was insanely tasty and a must try! 2 stars because of the service. We started with Kenny, who was great, but his shift ended and we were switched to Alex (who looks like Keshi). After that, it felt like we were completely forgotten. He was constantly helping the tables around us, cooking their meat and checking on them, while we had to repeatedly flag down other employees to clear plates or change our grill. At one point, I just placed our own plates on the bussing cart since it was right next to us. Even the table next to us joked that we had been forgotten. The only time Alex came over on his own was to ask about our membership and when it was time to pay. Maybe it was because we were on the Silver tier, but that's still around $60 per person, so I'd expect the same level of service regardless. The food itself was great, which made the service even more disappointing. We came around 5 PM and there were plenty of tables, but by the time we left the restaurant was packed. I like that you get 1 hour and 10 minutes, can order everything from a tablet, and there's a self serve buffet with rice, curry, vegetables, slushies, and ice cream. The meat quality was excellent, and I'd come back for the food. I just hope the service is more consistent next time. read more

Visited this chubby location and tried out the Gold Menu. They have plenty of options for meat but we mostly stuck to the items on the A4 menu. The quality of the meat is great as always. In terms of the sushi, the premium otoro nigiri was delicous. The other nigiri options were okay and we probably would not order those again. Something that was underrated was the Sukiyaki broth, which I don't see many people get. In terms of the service, it was fantastic as our plates were being bussed constantly. What really stood out was the friendliness and attentiveness of our server Josh H who helped out with our meat selection. In terms of the space, the decor makes you feel like you're in Japan. I do wish there were more space between tables and more space at the self service bar because the restaurant does feel extremely compact at times. Came here for dinner with my partner and had a great time. This is the third Chubby Cattle BBQ location we've visited, and this one is currently our second favorite. Nothing has topped the Rowland Heights location yet, that one is still our favorite!!! However this restaurant was also very nice but also small. One thing I noticed was that this location seemed to have more variety on the menu compared to the Rowland Heights and Crosby locations I've been to. I especially enjoyed the steamed egg. This time, my partner and I decided to try the Silver Pass instead of the Gold Pass. *** The only negative part of our experience was that there seemed to be a strong push from staff to choose a different tier. While waiting to be seated and discussing our order, we were repeatedly encouraged to upgrade. It felt a little odd because we specifically wanted the Silver Pass, and I noticed other guests asking for it as well. I stuck with my choice, and honestly, I'm glad I did. Because I have a membership, we received about $10 off per person, saving around $18-20 total. In my opinion, the Silver Pass was absolutely worth it and didn't feel like a rip-off at all. My one complaint about the restaurant itself is the self-serve area in the back where you get drinks, ice cream, soup, rice, curry, vegetables, corn cheese, egg tarts, and other sides. During dinner service, it gets extremely crowded and feels very cramped and claustrophobic. I think the layout could be improved because there simply isn't enough space for the number of people trying to access it at once. Other than that, the food was delicious, everything tasted great, and our server was very friendly. Overall, it was a nice experience and another great Chubby Cattle location to try. I would definitely come back again, but Rowland Heights still remains my favorite. That location is top-tier. read more

The meats were high quality and my favorite was the rib. I ordered from the gold menu. My only gripe was the meats had too much sauce but it was quickly solved by my server. The ambiance was decent. We came here in May for a birthday celebration. It's a very busy place and even on a Monday there was a line outside, as they don't take reservations. The atmosphere inside was fun and festive. The food was good, like other Korean bbq we have gone to. However there were some things they could improve on. The ordering pad kept glitching and would not allow us to order all the items we wanted, so we had to keep calling the server. Finally after half the meal was over we asked for a new pad and that resolved it. The server should have recognized the issue and fixed it very early in the meal for us, instead of us dealing with this annoyance for half the meal. The server kept trying to get my son to sign up for a "membership" at their restaurant chain. He kept coming to the table to give my son more information, to persuade him, it was actually too much and kind of aggressive marketing / selling. I don't think this should be happening while we are trying to celebrate a family birthday. Maybe he gets a commission or bonus for signups but it is inappropriate during a meal that costs $75 per person. The BBQ grill was often not hot enough so the food cooked inconsistently / slowly. I mean sometimes it was on fire and good, other times it looked dead and you couldn't feel heat over the meat. I'm not sure if it was a malfunctioning grill but the server didn't seem to think so, and just kept checking to see the heat setting was on max, confirmed it was max, and left; even though the grill heat varied considerably during the meal. This really impacts the enjoyment of the cooking experience, and they should ensure their equipment works well before letting anyone sit down. Last the food came slowly, perhaps in part because our ordering pad was not functioning properly but it also negatively impacted our enjoyment of the meal. I'm sure it resulted in us eating less which made more money for the restaurant. In general, this is NOT a 5 star restaurant from our experience, and I don't know how they got such a high YELP rating. read more

There were some hits and misses with the experience. We were on the waitlist to get in on a Sunday night and a 38 minute estimated wait turned into a 75 minute wait. It happens. But when it happens when they close at 10:00 and they seat you at 8:50, the time does matter. Everything was rushed for obvious reasons. We probably should have bailed. We got an ipad instead of a TV screen to order off of and it needed to be rebooted. Yup - more delays. We got the Gold package for $78 pp. It was hard for me to judge if that was the right price for quality. Some of the sushi and crudo we tried were very good. The A5 is always fun to eat and I liked the way they cooked it for us to start the night. The restaurant is cramped and not laid out well. The buffet area is hard to get to if 1 person is near a station. The biggest hit was the automatic rice machine! The most annoying part of the night was the waiter, whom we could not flag down when the ipad was not working, came back 3 times trying to get us to join the club. It was borderline harassment. This is THE best KBBq in Orange County. It has everything! Fresh and tender meats, sushi, Wagyu burger, egg tarts, milk tea, curry, everything! I introduced my coworkers to this and let's just say they fell in love and went crazy from this experience. I've been to a few Chubby Cattle locations and this might be my favorite so far! Great service, fairly quick to get seated, and good location central to everything. We came right at opening on a holiday weekend and were surprised that we were seated within 10-15 mins. There was a long line to sign in and a lot of groups already waiting, but it went by so quickly. We learned it was in part from how big the restaurant is and that they only take walk ins (first come, first serve). We opted for the diamond menu and loved everything we got! We love the limited meats the most but also loved that the menu comes with sushi. They had a bar of a few sides, as well as precooked things, rice and drinks. Johnny was our server and he was great! Incredibly friendly and provided great recommendations for us for food and sides. He would check in frequently and also left us to do our thing whenever we were just enjoying cooking ourselves. We're never the biggest fans of servers that spend too much time hovering given we're yakiniku and Chubby Cattle veterans, so we greatly appreciated that he caught us knowing what we were doing and only checked in as needed. He also was great at reminding us to get the most of things we forgot like dessert. The decor inside was cute and the aisles can be a bit tight, even by the bar area. Theres a table where they have unlimited side dishes, a sauce bar, drink station, ice cream maker, and heated countertop with burgers and egg tart. Everything looks well placed, organized, and neat. We ordered lots of different waygu cuts like the top blade, brisket, tongue, and etc. We basically ordered all the meat to try. My favorite was the cow tongue and the short rib. Very juicy and fatty; kinda like eating butter. It's delicious but you can't eat too much or else you'll eventually get sick of it. We also ordered the sushi there and it was whatever. Tasted fishy, but obviously they are known for their BBQ, not fish lol. The scallop was not bad though. We had sake to wash down the oiliness lol. Pretty buzzed that afternoon. The guy who served us was quick and friendly. Tip, don't eat the side dishes first because you gonna get full. I had the Wagyu burger in the beginning, and I couldn't eat that much afterwards. Had about 4 plates of meat to myself and that's it. I understand the demographics and their demand, especially in that upscale market, but it was pretty pricey even more so in this economy. Omg this place was so good. Let's start with the obvious: all wagyu. Yum. I must admit sometimes I really don't get the hype when it comes to meat quality. I mean, meat is meat, right? But I really tasted the quality at Chubby Cattle. It basically melted in your mouth, it has an almost buttery quality to it. So freaking good. On top of that, there's an abundantly stocked hot food station with corn cheese, egg tarts and Wagyu cheeseburgers, a rice station with lots of curries, an abundance of fresh veggies, and an assortment of drinks, including milk tea. The ambiance is so cool too, we got to hear them singing the birthday song for multiple parties and it was so fun. I loved the ease of ordering on the menu too and the staff were helpful with grilling some of our meats for us. Honestly, it's pretty pricey but one of those places that is definitely worth it. I came for lunch at Sunday and I knew that there would be a line so we arrived about 30 minutes prior to opening to find that there was already a line of about five people! I know waittimes here can get super high so I am glad we came early, because our party of six got sat immediately. We came to celebrate my dad's birthday, and since it was his birthday, he got a free meal with his Chubby Plus membership! Definitely makes the membership worth it. As always, the selection of meats and appetizers were amazing and very diverse. I love that there are so many options to choose from. I just wish the timer was longer, since you only get like 70 minutes to order food and there is a 5 minute stop in between every order so you can only order every 5 minutes. I think this is only a feature in the Irvine location, unless the other locations have changed and added this as well. My girlfriend and I also love the egg tarts. Also, great taste from the new cheese tarts as well! The best part of my experience was definitely our service from Ryan E. He was such a great server, offering to cook the meats for us and helping us out even when we didn't ask for it. I have been to Chubby Cattle restaurants multiple times and nobody has ever actually cooked the meat for us and Ryan E. did it multiple times, despite it being busy. While cooking, he would converse with us and made gaming jokes with my sister, who is typically super introverted and doesn't really talk. One of our kiddos accidentally dropped his ice cream & Andy was so patient & kind while helping our group clean up the mess. Would definitely request him next time if that's a thing. cOns.. .. The parking at DJ is notoriously horrible, so pack some patience & be prepared for bad drivers. .. The space & seating are limited at this location & it's very tight in the aisles. .. For being outside the ventilation felt worse than inside but you don't go to KBBQ without expecting to smelly a little smokey I guess. read more

Food was solid. The service is different in that you go to a bar area to get your own drinks, side dishes, rice, etc. the servers literally only bring out the meat to you. I also dislike the fact I have to download an app to have a dining experience there. Regardless, our server Alex Nguyen was great. He was friendly and quick to get the meat out to us. read more
