Terrible service. My sushi took over 40 to come out and came out well after the rest of my tables food. I got an apology but no compensation. The sushi was ok... Tons of rice and hardly any avocado or crab. My friends wrap was all lettuce and fell apart. My moms chicken sandwich was served on a soggy piece of bread. Cocktails were watered down. Had a group dinner here and was surprised to find a sushi chef. Sushi was as good. Service was a little slow, but we were a large group (14). Some tried the Chubby Trout, thought it was good. I tried the gumbo, not a classic gumbo but very flavorful and a good sized portion. Crab cakes, seared ahi appetizer, and drunken shrimp all disappeared quickly, because they were good. This was a much better restaurant than I expected to find in a midwestern city the size of Elkhart. I came here while in town for business. I suggest disregarding the negative reviews of the building itself, or the decor. Some of the best restaurants in the U.S. are total holes-in-the wall, but this one certainly isn't. In fact, it's a decent place for a casual family or business dinner, or a date. Lots of servers in the place on a Monday night, and a very good crowd. They have a great selection of microbrews on tap, including local Northern Indiana ones. The calamari appetizer was great, but be prepared for some serious garlic breath if you eat the sauce that comes with it. I had the Gumbo as my entree and while it was expertly prepared and really delicious, it was NOT Gumbo. It was not roux-based, and in fact there was no broth at all. It much more closely resembled Jambalaya or a sausage and tomato creole sauce over wild rice, with grilled shrimp on top. Like I said, it was delicious, and I'm a pretty discriminating eater of cajun/creole food. But it wasn't gumbo. read more

First time eating here and I was tempted by The "Buffalo Bill", a bison burger with spicy mayo and pepper jack cheese. I ordered it medium rare and it was cooked correctly which I appreciate, as opposed to places that ask but then it just ends up being whenever they remember to get it off the grill. The spicy mayo added an good and interesting and nicely added another facet of flavor to the bison. Also I recommend upgrading the side from chips to fries- they were freshly fried, crispy, and hot. Overall a well done and presented meal, the menu has other delicious sounding sandwiches as well. The only downside was service was a bit slow, drinks were empty for a bit, however the waitress was very nice and it was a busy lunch time. I will be back. read more

I loved being able to find a restaurant at 920 pm in Elkhart that I could really enjoy. The chef stopped to explain the seared tuna special and had no problem making adjustments to the vegetarian platter. I had a decent glass of wine for $5. This is a great option for a local meal - not a fan of large chain restaurants. We went about 8:00 on Saturday night and had to wait about 30 mins for a table for 2. We sat in the bar area (families with kids can dine on the other side of restaurant). There was no smoking in the bar. Our server was fantastic - very attentive, but not pushy or smothering. For appetizers we ordered the calamari sticks and baked pretzels. Calamari was ok. A little too much breading for me, but not horrible. Pretzels sticks were ok too. My husband ordered sushi and really liked it. The serving size was decent. I originally ordered a small prime rib. On the menu it states only served on Thur, Fri, Sat (I think) and available until gone. Well, story of my life, I was the next order in line when it ran out. So I changed my order to a small filet with a side of vegetables an sweet potato fries. The veggies were sauteed zucchini and corn. Very yummy. My filet was cooked as ordered - medium rare. I ordered a draft beer (don't remember the name - but I told the server I liked Blue Moon so she recommended something comparable, and even put an orange in it!) and it was great. I liked it better than Blue Moon. Overall food was decent and service was excellent. The price is a little higher than I would have imagined, but it won't stop me from going there again. read more

The almond crusted walleye is delicious! Anytime I make it to Elkhart, I make sure to stop in and enjoy this speciality. I look forward to this treat the entire trip from Vermont. Excellent little local place. Just happened to see a 10% off coupon at my hotel and was intrigued by the name. Checked out the Yelp reviews and decided to give it a try while in the area for the weekend. Excellent sushi and a variety of California and other types of rolls. Eclectic mix of menu items that run the gamut steak to seafood with pasta too. Service was a little slow, but the place was slammed at the time we arrived. First, please know I'm not a complainer. I've eaten here several times in the past and raved about the food. My girlfriend and I thought we'd go there tonight, and we're excited to see they had a shrimp and scallops dinner, which we both got. When they brought our plates out, and I wanted to ask the server where the rest of it was. For $25 we got three thick slices of ice cold cucumber, and on top of each of the ice cold cucumber was an ice cold scallop, followed by a lukewarm shrimp. Our side dish was 1/2 a cup of wild rice and 6 baby asparagus. Glad we added a side of bland cold mashed red potatoes. We didn't want to complain to our waitress Sarah, but we couldn't keep quiet we were very disappointed. Sarah said the manager would come speak to us, and someone walked by a few minutes later, after clearing dishes from the table next to us, and asked how we were doing and if we needed anything else. Come to find out this was the manager, are you kidding me? She never introduced herself to us as the manager! Her best offer was to compliment our appetizer. I will never eat here again, nor will I recommend the Chubby Trout to anyone again. If you want cold, bland food and pay a premium price for it, this is now the premiere place to go. I will have to go out later and get something more to eat. And train your managers to be managers. read more

If I can, I'd give the sushi 3 stars. The rolls were a little on the small side, especially for the price of average of $10 each roll, but they were tasty. I would definitely come back when they have half-off ($) sushi specials. Good ambiance, try to have a reservation since the restaurant is a little small and popular during the weekend. Me and my wife ate here as we pass by often. Stopped in one night and the food was poor and the portion size was horribly small. We spent 60.00 and had to go somewhere else to get something else. We thought we'd try Chubby Trout for New Year's Eve. I called to make a reservation and a man who said he was the owner told me they had a new tablet based reservation system and he couldn't figure out how to look up available times but he would have the Manager, Ashley call me when she arrived. I received a call from Ashley about 40 minutes later. She told me she had an opening at 5:00PM and I told her we would take it, Great right? Not quite, we arrived at 4:45 and were told they couldn't find a reservation for us. I told them that Ashley had called me and made the reservation. There were 3 people trying to find the reservation on their new tablet but couldn't find it. While we were waiting another couple walked in and "Sean" told the hostess she could seat them over there while pointing to a table. The hostess never looked for their reservation but looked at Sean and asked do you know them? He said yes, seat them over there. Obviously this couple didn't have a reservation but because they knew Sean it didn't matter. We were told we could eat at the bar, which I declined since a $25-$30 dollar meal is a lot to pay for bar seating. We never received an apology or were allowed to talk to Ashley, just told they were full and without a reservation there was nothing available. So we ended up then waiting an hour for a table at another local restaurant which ruined our plans for the evening. Unless your a friend of Sean, I would not recommend. read more

our group was seated next to a very noisy fan unit that members of our family were irritated with for the entire dinner. one of us had to request butter for his potato, and it took several minutes for the waitress to first attend to another table while our guest waited as his potato got cold. the place was recommended, but one friend told us it is a dump. while i wouldn't call it a dump, i was not impressed . food was good, but the chef who made it so enjoyable is gone. won't be back. read more
