Chubby's Diner in Manteca is a 5-Star winner. In response to the virus they have moved about 6 tables outside, each with seating for four persons. The wait staff is very prompt and eager to serve their customers. As for the quality of the food, it is perfectly prepared, attractively plated, and most important, tastes great! My wife and I arrived at 10:00am on Friday. It was a beautiful morning, and perfect for outdoor dining. We were seated at an open table, and promptly served our beverage. Within a few minutes the waitress took our order, and in less than fifteen minutes our food arrived. My wife and I couldn't have been more pleased. Alright, I would love to give the girls at the diner a 5 star because they were amazing to me. Extremely helpful and friendly, really made it an enjoyable experience! Thing is, the manager was rude. She didn't smile, didn't greet customers, made it very uncomfortable. Constantly micromanaging the servers over one ketchup bottle, or a piece of trash. She could have gotten off her fat ass and helped. I invited some friends to meet me and they were already closing‍ an hour early. Bad business if you ask me. I would love to see a different management team at Chubby's. I think the business would thrive so much better. read more

Went to Chubby's for late lunch/early dinner. I was looking forward to it as we don't dine out much. We walked in and were told they were closed. To be fair they did have a sign in front saying closed but hubby opened the door before I could tell him. We of course were told they were closed and not taking anymore customers. As we were leaving I saw the "holiday" hours which showed they closed at 2 pm. So I thought ok I should have noticed the hand printed sign. Went back to the car and the clock showed it was 1:23 pm. Chubby's is the best restaurant in Manteca, hands down. Yes, it can be crowded, causing service to be slow, but that can be said with all restaurants. Every time I am there, I'm greeted by multiple staff and seated usually within 10 minutes. A breakfast, lunch or dinner for 2 people will almost never be over $24. 3 stars - A-OK today. Having a BOGO coupon for buy a Philly cheesesteak get one free made it worth my while to venture out of town to this little 50s diner. I ran into no issues today other than the diner was warm because "the thermostat was broken ". After I asked, they opened up the doors and let in fresh air. That really helped. I ordered the Philly cheesesteak without the bell peppers, curly fries and mint milkshake. Curly fries were served up hot and fresh. They tasted so fresh I asked if they cut the potatoes in house. I was told no. The milkshake was yummy. I think they just add mint flavoring to vanilla ice cream and stir it up. It worked. The flavoring was pleasant tasting. Besides the glass full of milkshake they also give you the little metal can which has a bit more in it. The milkshake glasses are deceiving. The glass is so thick they don't hold a lot of liquid! The Philly cheesesteak sandwiches were good although they did not seem very authentic. It was more like slices of beef with Swiss cheese on top. More like a roast beef sandwich. Maybe the slices should've been a little thinner and chopped up a bit. They could've been a little more generous with the amount of meat for a $7 sandwich. The bread was good. Overall, the sandwich was good but not quite what I expected. My server was friendly and efficient and checked on me a couple of times. There were several other customers eating while I was there. The menu was huge (so many choices! too many choices?) and much of it was priced very well. There was 50s music. They charge extra to substitute a Gardenburger brand veggie-burger for a regular meat burger (which always makes me wonder what kind of meat are they using where basic non-meat substitute costs that much more that they need to pass the cost to me). The salads were swimming in water under the dressing - had to send it back, and replacement salads were slightly less watery. It was hard for me to hear the 50s music, because I could hear the hip-hop they were playing in the kitchen (even after I complained). The burger does not come with fries, and the server didn't bother to point that out when my friend asked if he could sub onion rings for fries. I have seen this place for years, but not once stopped in. Finally I got a coupon and decided to take a chance. Even though I thought of the place more for breakfast, my coupon was for a hamburger. I gave it a chance and was extremely please with the outcome. I have to say by far, this is the best burger I have ever had. The buns are homemade and there special sauce isn't the same like other places (based on thousand island). It was so great, I even came back with my brother and order him one which he was very happy with the outcome. The ranch sauce is awesome. I would recommend Al for the server. The other new young blonde waitress is horrible, she forgot many things, expecially my beverage (coffee) and didn't remember til when I was going to leave. For me, good customer service would have been not to charge me for the drink. Also, if you are going to be a server, you better be great at math. They have the best burgers, fries, milkshakes, salads, fried zucchini, chili cheese fries and breakfast of all time. I didnt care too much for the dinner though. But any of the other stuff is FANTASTIC. You can get a burger and fries for $6. The worlds best milkshakes are $3. Sampler platter (huge) is $5. I am definitely impressed by this place, overall. There are a few things I wished were changed, but overall my experience was excellent. My boyfriend took me here this morning. When he turned into the parking lot, my first reaction was along the lines of...."Don't tell me you're taking me to the Waffle Shop after what happened last time!" Well, I'm still new to the area, so I didn't realize this other place was here. My boyfriend just laughed and told me to turn around. The dining room was extremely crowded, so we arrived during a busier time of day. Breakfast is also what they are famous for, and you can tell that by the extensive list of items in the breakfast menu. I didn't care for the font in the menu though. I realize that sounds strange to say, but when you're looking to choose an item to eat and all the menu items are in a red cursive font, it makes it difficult to read. However, regardless of wearing glasses, I found exactly what I wanted. Our drinks were delivered quickly, food was hot and delivered quickly (especially for how busy they were!), and drinks refilled as needed. This is a tall order to serve when the food is homemade. The cooks have to be quick and efficient to keep up with customer demand that fast! Overall, I gave this place 4 stars because the waffle I had was perhaps the best I've ever had. The amount of food offered for the price is definitely worth anyone to check out! So, why not 5 stars? Well, this place is extreme crowded for it's size. I assume it began as a small place, but the food spoke for itself and people started coming in (some from across the parking lot too perhaps? lol). There are bar stools at the front, and when full, you have to walk sideways to get to your table, even if everyone has their chair pulled in. I think I might have eaten here once before many years ago, but today we decided to go in for lunch. Right off the bat, you see how cramped the space is. There should be room enough to move freely without fear of bumping into a table or chair. Next thing you notice is how filthy the place is. Every single one of the ceiling fans is covered with probably an inch of dirt and dust. As they spin, that dust flings off and guess where it lands? Yeah, your food. Not good. The ceiling vents were also very visibly dirty and stained. The seats were torn and there was duct tape everywhere you looked - very tacky! As for the the tables, they were sticky and you could tell have not been decently and thoroughly cleaned in quite some time. Our server came and we ordered: a couple of burgers and for me a smothered teriyaki chicken. Oh my goodness... okay, let me just say that I am certainly not one to waste food or be overly picky to the point that I will just leave food sitting on my plate, but in this case, there was no way I was going to be able to get that down. I certainly don't expect 5 star, ultra-fine dining, but it should at least be edible! As you can see in the picture, it looked downright gross! It was like they took the sauce, mushrooms and onions and just slapped it on the plate with no care at all. I cut into it and right away I notice the chicken was tough. I went ahead and took a bite. I can't even begin to convey how nasty this was. The teriyaki sauce tasted like it was straight out of a bottle and way, way, way too salty. It had a really bad taste to it. The chicken was tougher than a 2X4, seriously. I took one more bite just to be sure, nope. Same thing. Nasty taste and tougher than rocks. The meal was served with a side salad (water dripping off the lettuce to where it pooled up in the plate) and a container of honey mustard dressing. The dressing was also terrible. It was almost like they took bottled sauce and added water to it. Steamed (or grilled, I couldn't even tell) vegetables and a baked potato were also included. The vegetables were totally unseasoned and mushy. The potato tasted like it had been cooked hours ago and sat in a warm oven the whole day. Very dried up tasting. The "garlic bread" included was laughable. It was basically the backside of a hamburger bun, toasted with oil and a smattering of a few herbs on top. That's it. My husband had a cheeseburger and I gave that a taste as well. The meat was tough, chewy and bland tasting also. You could tell that these were frozen patties, not fresh. I normally love pickles! The ones on his burger were so bad! I think they must take them and soak them in a barrel of salt or something. Would I come back? Not unless a major overhaul was done to this place. Small seats and weird dinning room does make it tough to sit a party more than 4. or if you have a belt size bigger that 36. After the change in owners the food has headed kind of south. poortions size has gone down a bit and the quality isn't quite as great as it used to be, but still a decent place to sit down for some eggs or a burger. read more

I like the place but the service is slowwwwwww! The waitresses walk around like they don't have a care in the world. We were here today for 15 minutes before anyone even asked us what we would like to drink. We told that person we were ready to order and they said they would tell our waitress. I saw people coming in after us having orders taken, and we didn't see our waitress until about the 20-25 minute mark. Poor service considering I saw folks walking back and forth past us not even bothering to ask if we had been helped yet. Its a blast from the past, I never lived in the 50s, but I would imagine a 50s diner would be like Chubby's Diner. The service was GREAT! I like to ask questions to see if the waitress has recommendation and she did. I order the chicken fried steak skillet and it was delicious. I don't like chicken fried steak but this was good! The waitress came back to see if I liked it and when I told her I did, she was proud. That makes me feel good that she cares what I thought. The good: breakfast is good here, different options and I love the names! They also offer a homemade salsa that is great. Food is not greasy...big plus here. Drinks aren't overpriced like other places and they use HUGE cups so they don't have to refill ever 10 min. Buns for lunch are homemade and shakes are great. Never a long wait no matter how packed it is. Everyone I have had wait on us was nice and friendly and I never feel rushed. The bad: The place itself is a little small, but with the area they have to work with they are using the seating to the max! The hamburger pattys are small compared to the bun size. I've been to Chubby's a few times now and my impression is sort of mixed. The food has been decent if not exciting, the decor is nostalgic if decrepit (and you don't mind going to the outside, gas station style bathroom to pee). The service has been friendly and they have always made sure my drink was full. However, sometimes they don't go the extra step that would make your experience better. For example, I came in for breakfast and decided to have the Denver omelette and hash browns. Now, it says right on the menu that you have your choice of cheeses with each omelette and i'll be the first to admit that when the waiter finally came for my order, I forgot to state a cheese preference, so apparently I either got the waiter's preference or the default cheese, which was American cheese. American cheese in a Denver Omelette is, we'll, it's just plain weird. They could have come back and asked, but didn't. Add to that hash browns that weren't really browned and it made for an unsatisfactory experience. If your hankering for a 50s diner style experience in a divey sort of way, this place is for you. read more

We are both not a fan of chain restaurants but also don't like being disappointed when it comes to out food. THE FOOD OMG AMAZING!! we were there just after 11am and it wasn't so packed which was great for us, we got a nice table. We weren't in a rush to order so the servers gave us just enough time between getting the menu's,looking and finally ordering. I got the french toast cheese and ham sandwich (or was that bacon) with curly fries and an oreo malt shake. My friend ordered the Ricky Ricardo, waffle and mash and gravy. We were both happy with our food. Paying on the other hand took longer that it should, we got our check early but there was no clear indication of where we pay and servers disappeared for a while after they dropped the check. I'm sorry couldn't even eat here had to leave. The table was held up by a stack of napkins blackened at the edge from being so filthy. The menus were old dirty and cracked. Ask to start with a water and a side of lemons. The bowl the lemons came on was dirty and had food leftover on it. The inside is ran down and is in much need of maintenance. First time eating here. My husband had the 'Wipeout' which is 2 pork chops, 2 eggs and hash browns and a choice of 2 buttermilk pancakes. He said Pork chops were perfectly seasoned. I had the 'Wild Daisy' omelette with hash browns and 2 buttermilk pancakes as well which was awesome. Portions are huge and I especially loved how the wait staff made sure to top up my coffee at regular intervals. Cool, relaxed atmosphere that sets it apart from bigger chain restaurants. Today was my first time here. The place overall looked amazing. Has like a 50's Rock n Roll theme. Place is not to big but I'm sure they are able to handle a legs crowd. I had wanted to try chubby's for a few months now after reading other people's reviews. And sadly to say I was very disappointed. The first thing you are greeted by is loud blaring music. We were seated shortly after entering but it went down from there. The service was slow and they weren't crowded the woman that brought our drinks looked like she came from the morgue. The food came out in about 5 minuets and it was completely tasteless I got the Popeye omelet and my mother got the hot cakes and bacon both were flavorless and small portions plus both were way to expensive we could have gotten twice the food in Denny's for less money horrible food horrible service horrible experience will never be back read more
