Chubby's is the new upscale Jamaican restaurant at Adelaide and Portland. I went there for a dinner with a friend. The first thing I noticed was how... nice it was inside. My parents live in a Caribbean neighbourhood (Eg West) so I've been to my fair share of Jamaican restaurants, but nothing as nice as this. The restaurant is very tastefully decorated with soft music and candle light. The wait staff is very friendly and professional, and are quick to recommend their favourites. I wouldn't think twice about taking a date here, which is something I can't say for 99% of Jamaican joints in the city. The food is great! However, the portions leave a lot to be desired especially for the price that you're going to pay. I shared an order of the curry chicken, the jerk pork, a side of jasmine rice, and an order of the Jamaican beef patties. Try the jerk pork at the very least! It's super flavourful and crispy. The order for us came up to about $32 per person, and neither of us felt really satisfied leaving the restaurant. I wouldn't say that the food is very authentic, but I can see myself coming back here someday. read more

I'll start off this review by asking any reader not to judge because all of the food described below was eaten by one person: me. I'm sorry, but I was really excited to try Chubby's, being a lover of Jamaican/Caribbean cuisine and had a feeling that I'd need double the fixings. There's no questions asked that any fan of Jamaican/Caribbean cuisine should count themselves lucky to find themselves in Toronto because the city is filled with fantastic options. Without a doubt, however, I'd throw Chubby's in any list of places you must try if you're on a mission to taste the best the city has to offer. Knowing that I'd want a double portion, I opted for a half jerk chicken (served with a unique and delicious slaw), a side of rice and peas (a generous portion) and a side of oxtail gravy (which I always feel is a must to add to the rice and chicken). What I got was a deliciously flavoured and perfectly juicy portion of jerk chicken, a slaw that was unlike any slaw I've previously had (to be clear, I say this in a great way) and a fresh side of rice (with some delicious oxtail gravy to boot to bring it up a notch). The chicken had the right amount of spice with a bit of sweetness and led to me wanting more after I had technically eaten half a chicken. This really was delicious and I look forward to having a chance to try it in house once conditions allow for it. Logistically, this was ordered via UBEREATS and I have no complaints. The atmosphere and aesthetics of the restaurant is absolutely charming! If you're looking for that "Instagram spot", you'll find it at the top floor at the back. Our sever was very tentative, constantly checking up on us and even gave us some recommendations. I love how the servers can wear their own clothes, it really adds to the aesthetics!! We opt'ed to the Jerk chicken and slaw (half size $19), rice and peas ($5) and fried okras for 2 people to share. Sadly they sold out of plantains ($7). Our bill came up to a total of $70 (including tax) with 2 drinks, a main with 2 sides. This is my first time having fried okras, and it was delicious and probably the biggest portion out of all the things we had ordered. I've heard the texture of okra is usually 'slimy', but because they were fried, we didn't feel that texture. It was recommended as a sub from our server. In my honest opinion, the food was good, but I've had better for a fraction of the price. I'm also confused why they charge $5 for such a tiny portion of rice... Overall, we still enjoyed our time here. This is more of a onetime visit, probably won't be coming back. read more

Was visiting from out of town for Carnival and WOW!! We came here our first night and had to come back again before we left! The food was so good! Idk who the chef is... but they need a raise!!! We had the Jerk Wings, Patties, Jerk Chicken, Plantains, Oxtails, and Curry Shrimp over the course of our 2 trips there! Everything was well seasoned and flavorful! Also the festivals that come with the Jerk Wings are the best I've ever had. The drinks are amazing and strong as well!!! I had the hibiscus mojito and it was phenomenal! The overall ambiance is so beautiful as well, I love how they decorated the place. Also shoutout to Shannon ( hope that's how his name is spelt) for making us feel welcomed and Sarah for the excellent service!! We had the opportunity attend their Carnival Afterparty which was amazing too!! The music, drinks and vibes were 10/10!! Not sure if they do stuff like that often but they should definitely continue! I ordered on Uber Eats so I can't speak for the service or Ambiance. The food was high quality and fresh and I was very pleased. Portions are relatively small for the price but not so much that you are disappointed or left hungry. I would say it is Jamaican food for every palate since the Jerk was flavourful but not very spicy. The wait was long but the food was amazing and worth it. We had a line at the hostess stand despite everyone having reservations. I'm not sure what happened with it but they seemed to be having trouble with their seating system on the ipad. We waited about 15 mins to be seated. We were sat in a corner upstairs and the decor was very nice. Our server was nice but we had to ask him to come to our table because he was taking multiple tables orders who had been seated after us and after we had been sitting for about 15 minutes. Multiple people kept bringing the wrong food to multiple tables in our corner of the restaurant. About 5 or 6 times we were brought something we didn't order. They said the numbering system was weird in that particular section of the restaurant. We had to wait about 45 mins after ordering to get our food. The food was amazing though. Everything was cooked perfectly and was full of flavor. Even my partner who doesn't like spicy food said the jerk chicken was great! The server brought the check and a cc payment machine and left for a couple of mins. I paid. When he returned, he took my receipt and the cc machine and gave me a different person's receipt. I was so confused. Nothing on the receipt matched what I ordered and I had already payed. I asked the table next to me and he immediately came over after I started asking the other table. I explained what he did and he stared at the receipt for like 10 seconds and then agreed with me and printed me my correct receipt again. Overall the service was confusing and seemed like they were trying their best but there was still a lot of unnecessary interaction for a relaxing night out. I've been here quite a few times and this spot is consistently good. It's got a hipster vibe and it's kinda pricey for Jamaican food, but the food always tastes fresh and is made with good ingredients. The ambiance is sort of upscale, but the vibe is kinda chill. I really love the kale and pomegranate salad. The festival bread has a mild sweetness to it, I could eat about a 100 sticks of those easily. The okra is crunchy, and a sweet undertone. Not the biggest fan of the fried plantains, I'm not a plantain person in general. The jerk chicken is really tender, and the taste of the chicken isn't overpowered by the seasoning. The jerk pork is especially delicious. Ginger beer is really strong but tastes great on a hot summer day. read more

Our first stop in Toronto was Chubbys. I would recommend making a reservation, but we found this gem the night before and there was only walk in available. It looks like a house from the outside, but when you walk in you feel like you could sit there for hours. It would be a great first date spot. I wouldn't recommend for parties of more than 6. One of the few restaurants opened on Boxing Day 2019 in downtown Toronto. First impression, bittersweet; good Reggae sounds playing upon entry and nice Caribbean feel l, which is the sweet. The bitter, it took 15 minutes for a staff member to acknowledge us when we entered the establishment at the hostess stand. Finally, someone acknowledge us and sat my family party of 3. Service was good from here on out, except for the fact I never received the rum punch I ordered after placing my food order. When I brought this to the server's attention, she ensured that I would not be charged for the rum punch and I wasn't. Food food food... Good good good... Oxtail stew, simply delicious and flavorful. Perfect for a cold Toronto winter day. Served with rice and peas, well cooked, plentiful and spicier than any rice and peas I've had from Jamaican restaurants in the states. Salad with Jerk Chicken, fresh greens well seasoned jerk chicken Jerk wings, very good sweet and a hint of heat, but well seasoned and cooked perfectly. Only 3 stars because of lack of acknowledging our presence at the hostess stand and I never received my rum punch drink order. An unexpected pleasure. Space is bright and cheery. Staff are upbeat and friendly with excellent service. Take their recommendations on the menu. Drinks are mostly on the rum/sweet side but with lots of flavour. The fried plantains were exceptional. The curried chicken was hot but not unbearably and there were two terrific house sauces to heat things further. Our table's fav was the mango with scotch bonnet. The jerk pork was terrific as was the jerk chicken. Desserts were nicely presented. We especially liked the bread pudding presentation- cubes of the pudding with a scoop of vanilla ice cream beside and lovely rum sauce. A 5-star WOW. Have not had Jamaican food this good since vacationing there in 2002. Granted, that was the last time I had Jamaican food but therein lies the compliment! Chubby's Oxtail stew, Curry goat, Jerk chicken and patty's were deliciously seasoned to Irie perfection. Each bite transported me back to 80° on a tropical beach instead of 39° and snowing in Toronto. Only thing would've made it complete was a Red Stripe beer and a blunt. Next time, I gonna ask. Delicious Jamaican food in the city! Coming here around 12pm on a weekday, there were no lines when we came in, but the patio grew to be quite popular throughout the meal. It's beautifully decorated inside, with cute clipboard menus for us to read. For four people, we decided to share a few of the dishes, in total we spent around $25 per person for a lunch. After ordering, we were given two of their special house sauces for spice - one was a mango flavoured one which was less spicy, the red spice was a little more hot. The portions come in very small sized bowls - rather small for the amount that you pay for in comparison to out of city restaurants. The likkle bites appetizers can be quite pricey as well, but the quality of the food is very tasty. Pepper Shrimp ($16) - There were about 6 pieces of large shrimp, peeled for you in garlic sauce. The shrimps were really juicy and delicious, with delicious flavouring for the sauce. Slow-baked Jerk Wings ($16) - Delicious sauce, the wings were split up into wings and drumsticks for those who had a preference for one over another. Less than 10 pieces in total Fried Okra ($6) - Really delicious way of eating okra! I am typically not a big fan of okra, but the way they made it here was very delicious! Curry Goat with jasmine rice ($17) - The curry goat was delicious with their tasty mango chutney sauce! I could taste a bit of the smell from the goat, but the curry covered a bit of the smell already. If you're a regular jasmine rice eater (which I am), this jasmine rice is a little more rough than other grains that I have tasted. Jerk Chicken - quarter with Chubby's Slaw ($16) The jerk chicken was probably my favourite dish here. I wouldn't say it's the best jerk chicken that I've had though, there wasn't enough flavour to it in my opinion. The chubby slaw mixture of slaw veggies in a small bowl. Nothing amazing about it in particular, just a typical bowl of slaw that you can find at the supermarket. 3.5 Stars When I heard Gusto 101's parent company opened up a new restaurant - Chubby's Jamaican, I was super excited to try it out! Especially after seeing a bunch of instagram pictures of the fun tropical interior, especially the second floor bar! With it being our first time at the restaurant for dinner, our waiter was extremely helpful with taking time to give us recommendations, and we ended up ordering a wide spread. To start, we had the Spicy Jerk Chips, the Saltfish Bites, the Likkle Jamaican Patties (love the name). The Spicy Jerk Chips were what really stood out, they were perfectly seasoned and were a great light appetizer to start. My friend was super excited to order the Saltfish Bites as she loves Saltfish but doesn't get to eat it often - however it didn't taste like what she was used to/ wouldn't order it again. The Likkle Jamaican patties were OK, but were not much different from other regular patties. For mains we had the Jerk Chicken and the Curry Goat. The Jerk Chicken was OK, but was dry. The Curry goat was a great, and we're glad we ordered it to accompany the chicken. For deserts we also go the Coconut Pie and the Carrot Cake - both were great to end off our meal, and would order it again! Overall we had a great experience, but some of the dishes didn't live up to what we expected. Definitely would come back again to try some other dishes though! read more

My GOOD GOOD GOD! I visited Toronto for 3 days and ate here 2 of those days. During those visits I think we probably tasted everything on the menu and it was ALL DELICIOUS. The highlights were the jerk wings, oxtails, and mac n cheese (made with an ingredient I would never try but loved--cod fish). Ordered Chubby's through SkiptheDishes for delivery and the delivery was free since the over was over $20. I ordered the Jerk Chicken, Oxtail stew and the patties for two. I wanted to love every dish but I didn't. The jerk chicken is amazeballs and was my favourite of the night. This is a must order! As for the patties, I only ate 2 of the 4 patties. I didn't know all 4 were different so didn't get a chance to try all four varieties but they were smaller than I had thought but would still recommend trying as they're different from your regular old Jamaican patties. I had really high hopes for the Oxtail since there were many rave reviews but it was highly disappointing. The oxtail was dry and lacked any sort of flavour. I wished I had ordered another serving of the jerk chicken. I would come back to check out the atmosphere and for the jerk chicken and to try some other dishes! read more

I appreciate the different aspects of Jamaican culture throughout the restaurant especially the picture gallery in front of the rest rooms. The food was subpar. Portion sizes were very small and for the prices you're paying, doesn't seem worth it. 19.00 for oxtail, 14.00 for jerk chicken and you have to add the sides separately. The food was overpriced.
