Ambiance 10 Service 3 Food 2.5 So the Kale and Spinach was okay based on seasoning could have added bell peppers since looking for a Jamaican feel. Curry Goat was not so good, it was burnt a bit, it's not Jamaican curry used no Betta Pack or Irie this was East Indian Curry used, Curry was dark not even yellow curry, it was full of oil/grease a lot, gravy did not have any body was grease and watery couldn't even coat the rice. Oxtail was tender was not so good, gravy was oily/greasy no body watery, the white rice was excellent tho, rice and peas was different was Caribbean like but salty. Meat was not Jamaican cooked it wasn't authentic was salty had to come home and take a pressure pill. Meat was not seasoned by a Jamaican or like a Jamaican. Jerk Chicken was alright they used Mr. Goudas or Woodchuck Jerk Seasoning it tasted like bottle jerk season was used said the Jamaican. I feel this restaurant is Caribbean like but not Jamaican authentic. The food was salty not Jamaican seasoned I get box food 100% better than this and feel satisfied, I'm honestly reviewing here not bashing fr. I do not think these commentators/reviewers are even Jamaican muchless this restaurant. The Ambiance/setting was very good that was more Caribbean like than the food. Server was like the Curry Goat. So good had to come here twice while in Toronto for 5 days jerk chicken and oxtail are must haves!!

To celebrate my cousin's birthday, he chose Chubby's as he was having a Jamaican food craving. Upon arrival I really liked the decor of the interior and the exterior. It was painted clean white with palm trees on the outside and a bright pink neon sign welcomed us as we approached the door. The inside was 2 levels, very cozy and warm with lots of Island inspired decorations. I really enjoyed the atmosphere the place gave it reminded me of being in Jamaica and made me forget about how chilly it was outside that day. We had an earlier reservation for 5:30pm but the place was already packed with guests. We were welcomed by the staff right away and told that we they had a 2 hour seating limit because there was a reservation right after ours at 7:30pm. That was fine, though my cousin who had made the reservation received 3 text messages to remind us and tell us there was a 2 hour seating limit. A little excessive in our eyes but possibly they had trouble with people overstaying or missing their reservations. Now onto the menu, there were plenty of options to choose from and everything sounded delicious. We ordered a little bit of everything to share including the Jamaican patties, jerk wings, curry chicken, oxtail stew, kale and pomegranate salad, jerk chicken and the fried okra. I enjoy Jamaican food but I wouldn't say I'm an absolute fanatic about it as my spice tolerance isn't so great but everything we ordered was really tasty. Everything was cooked perfectly and had their own flavour profiles. The Jerk wings were absolutely spicy beyond belief and I couldn't eat more than one. That was the only dish I didn't go back for seconds (but if you love spice, then this is definitely a dish you should get). Everything was fresh and complimented each other perfectly. I had never tried okra before and I had heard it was either you like it or you don't type of food. I discovered that I was on the "like it" side as it was crispy on the outside and had a slight slimy texture on the inside. Overall I enjoyed our meal and we were super full at the end. Drinks were average though the waitress made a mistake and ordered the wrong drink for us. She rectified it immediately by telling us we could just keep both drinks. It was extremely kind of her since the accidental drink was their $25 Calabash Bay drink, served in a fresh pineapple. It ended up being the most delicious drink and on the house so we couldn't complain one bit about our experience here. The price was a little more costly than what we usually pay for Jamaican food but of course we were downtown and didn't expect it to be as cheap as our usual takeout haunts in Scarborough. I think it was worth eating and would come back with others if they wanted to have some good Jamaican food in a great island atmosphere. read more

We had the Jamaican chicken (quarter size), plantains and curry chicken. I love the Jamaican Caribbean vibe in this restaurant. Great lunch spot! Service was pretty good when we had it although we sat in the patio and found it difficult to find a server at times. Food came out pretty quickly. And I MUST recommend their curry chicken. I absolutely love this restaurant! I've been here three times and I will continue to return. The customer service is amazing. I love the fact that the waiters wear casual clothing so you feel at home. The food is always well seasoned, hot, and worth the wait. My personal favourite dish is the curry goat and I also love their cocktails! The ambiance is amazing as well, they play a selection of reggae and Dancehall tunes and it's a great vibe. Stopped by Chubbys for a after dinner cocktail only, but oh boy did we wish we came here for dinner instead. Our evening there started off with the fact that last call was being initiated at the time. We didn't know if we would be able to stay and chill for long due to that fact so we opted to leave. However, our server clarified and encouraged us to stay for drinks. Food: Rum punch was a great recommendation. Nice and sweet which I don't typically go for but it felt balanced enough that it wasn't overtly sugary. Buddies also got the Hibiscus mojito and the Buffalo Soldier which I had a taste of which were both great. We also decided to snack on plantain chips, (something I haven't had in a while) which were absolutely delicious. Service: Service was great with a lots of recommendation, knowledge and charm. Ambiance: Definitely had that Jamaican vibe. Dim lighting which made it perfect for a social outing or have a cocktail night. Lots of seating available with two floors. Recommendation: For sure for the cocktails, I haven't dined in yet so I can exactly vouch for the food, however I hear good things about it. For sure I will be coming back, hopefully soon. Came here after Caribana Saturday for lunch around 4:45 and there was no wait for my party of 8. We sat upstairs. I loved the Decor and set up here. I enjoyed a rum punch and we started with the jerk wings. They were spicy and tasty. I ordered the fried okra and Caribbean veggie stew. I enjoyed my food. The stew was fresh and flavorful. The veggies were perfectly cooked and seasoned (reminded me of a Brooklyn ital stew I sometimes get). The fried okra wasn't breaded just crispy and salted slightly which was exactly to my liking. The bf had watercress and papaya salad which he seemed to enjoy. I was not able to try it because it was gone in minutes. He did mention that although he's not a huge papaya fan this salad was super tasty and he loved the vinaigrette dressing (I saw him add mango pepper sauce though). The others in my group had the likkle patties, rice and peas, oxtail, jerk pork and curry chicken. There were complaints about the curry chicken from 2 people: "didn't taste homemade... wasn't seasoned properly...". The only other complaint was a charge for extra oxtail gravy $3.00 cad. (Just an FYI) I would give Chubby's 5 stars but because of my groups complaints I held back one. If you like Jamaican... give Chubby's a try. I left with a smile. read more

If you want to know how a burger can make your taste buds dance to the point your body starts to move. This is the place. Location: There is metered street parking and paid parking lot across the street. For transit, it is just a block north of King. Restaurant: Interesting decor! It is entirely possible that I didn't get the vibe they are going for. Nonetheless, it was clean. Tables are decent size. Your plate won't be fighting each other. Music a little too loud. Have to yell a little to talk to each other. Staff: Over all they were okay. One less the other more, but food makes up for the less. The hostess was upper nice. I had the Chubby Burger. It comes with coleslaw and fries. You just have to eat this burger. The server told me I was about have the best fries I have ever had while she was putting them in front of me. They were incredible. Great food and great service. Came here on a Sunday for an early dinner with my boyfriend. We sat upstairs which was a little less cramped. When we got there it wasn't busy and they sat us downstairs, literally on top a family with kids, so I asked to move for some more space. Went Upstairs and it was perfect. Great decor. Felt like I was on an island. I got the salad with jerk chicken (tasty) but a smallish portion. Boyfriend ordered the curried goat and said it was out of this world! I love Jamaican food and I was not expecting to be eating so much Jamaican food this trip back to Toronto, but I was so lucky! We got ackee and saltfish bites, oxtail stew, jerk pork, Caribbean veggie stew, and a sundae dessert. The food is not mindblowing, but they are pretty on point. My chief complaint there is how dark the place is. We had to take out our phones and turn on the flashlight to read the menu. To be fair, i am not used to eating Jamaican food in a fancy restaurant. I mean, the Calabash Bay cocktail served in a pineapple was $21 - I ordered it not knowing that a drink can be that expensive! This place is fun. First off the decor and ambiance is great. We ordered the patties, Ackerman salt fish bites and the wings. Omg the wings were amazing. The great thing is the plates are shareable and good value since you get quite full (the portions are a good amount). The best part is the décor - very warm and inviting. In a city that offers so many authentic Jamaican Jerk spots this place is definitely a miss. The homemade gingerbeer just tasted like boiled ginger , none of the traditional fermented fizz. All the " hot sauces " were about as spicy as ketchup and the doubles dip came with an odd assortment greens that we wernt sure if they were for dipping or or garnish ( the dips themselves were pretty unremarkable. ) The jerk chicken was dry and came with no gravy or rice and peas. I wanted to love Chubby's more. It was so cute, walking up to the pink door I felt like I belonged on the cover of a postcard. The environment is gorgeous, super serene. I was told I had to try ox tail, first timer (keep that in mind) so a friend of mine and I shared the ox tail with fixings on the side, and jerk chicken. Reason for the rating? The serving sizes were pitiful. It was a tease, and for someone who really doesn't need a whole lot of food to be satisfied, I walked away still hungry. Flavor on the jerk chicken was great, still did not understand the hyper around oxtail unfortunately but will I have to try it again? yes, and with bigger portions. 3 starts for the overall experience but definitely 4-5 stars for the flavoring in the food because it did not lack one bit. Chubby's is must do for people who love Jamaican/West Indian food! As a fellow West Indian (Trini), I am more than pleased to have a caribbean restaurant in the city that I feel proud to take my Canadian friends to... to introduce them to our food and our culture. It's nicely done with a cool relaxed vibe, that's classy but not pretentious. The food itself is a gastronomic delight! The fried Okra; Pepper Shrimp; Salt Fish Balls and jerk style chips were all amazing... I've never had fried Okra done that way and it's now one of my favourites! I had the Jerk Pork for my main and Wow... it was flavourful and tender and succulent... By far the best I've had in Toronto. I also sampled the Oxtail from my friend's plate and without a doubt the best stew oxtail I've ever had in my life! The drinks were also really good. We had the Buffalo Soldier (my new favourite drink) and the rum punch (also very good)... The staff and service was top notch (maybe a little too doting)... but certainly a better alternative than bad service :) The only downside to the experience was the bread pudding... It came nicely presented like all the food, but I found the bread hard... this took away from the flavour... now maybe this is a Jamaican thing... but I hope it's Chubby's thing and they can fix it. Ordered their jerk pork and oxtail stew. Oxtail stew was great, almost melts in the mouth but tastes a little fatty. Jerk pork was also good, can't really comment on authenticity though. The side vegetable dish was a bit salty and wasnt seasoned properly. That was the only thing. The restaurant had really nice, islandish decor and a bar. My husband, sister and I were visiting from Chicago. When we walked in no one greeted us, no one smiled at us. We waited by the front of the door. Near the host's stand and waited patiently for someone to greet us or even acknowledge our presence. I smiled over at the bar at the two workers (ladies) at the bar area but that wasn't received well because they just glanced up and quickly looked away and said absolutely nothing. Then I leaned over and said "hello!" They both looked over and one said "oh hi". I said is anyone going to acknowledge us or say "we'll be right with you?". The one girl said "I'm just focused on what I'm doing". I said "a greeting would be nice if no host/hostess is available at the moment." Anyway when we got seated we had a very cool waiter Jamal who gave us some nice drink recommendations and had a great vibe about him. We also couldn't help but notice another worker that had the most pleasant smile on her face. She just looked so warm and friendly and made up for the cold introduction. I came to find out that her name was Sonia! She said bye to us when we left and was very pleasant. These two individuals made it worth the visit! Thank you Jamal and Sonia for making our second visit to Chubby's worth it! I gave 4 stars only because some of the other workers need to be a little more welcoming. Smile, it doesn't hurt!
