NY Strip and Steamed Brocolli
Maranda W.

A classic steakhouse best known for its salad bar that has staff keeping up with it. Has all the pieces to make a salad plus marinated mushrooms, tuna mac and bread. The dining area is quite large and we were able to snag a corner area with our toddler. The staff was really great and did what they could to get our food out and ready so our guy wasn't sitting for too long. I had the NY strip which was cooked just as I requested and the steamed brocolli had good seasoning (not just salt and pepper). The kids burger is very large! We had plenty of leftovers to bring home for our son. My husband got the surf and turf with the beef kabob which looked amazing. The lobster tail was large! We had plenty of leftovers across the board and got a key lime pie to go for dessert. The filling was creamy and light!

I would absolutely not go here again.. this place needs it all.. an updating .. and actually salad bar.. the one that the are known for... sucks.. but where you really lost me was the service. My server was absolutely the worst server I've ever had.. her name starts with a ..N and should find a way different line of work.. stay in school or go back.. and now the food.. if the service didn't suck so bad I could probably get over the mediocre food.. but do to such crappy service it only highlighted the lackluster food.. I honestly woulda had better service and food at any drive through.

Dinner last night with the Family! My wife, daughter and her Fiancé. We arrived at about 6:15 and were seated immediately. Our waiter Joe greeted us and to our drink order. We then proceeded to the salad bar. Excellent selection of fixings. Joe was very attentive, and took our entree order! The restaurant was very busy. The food was cooked to perfection! I highly recommend Chuck's for a good dinner!

Decided to try Chucks after driving by it for years- what took us so long?! It happened to be an unusually busy night but the whole staff hustled and worked together- we noticed how hard you all work!! Buffalo shrimp. Amazinggggg- would go back here just for that and a cocktail anyday. We also got the salmon, killer tuna dish, and the ribs- holy cow those ribs were HUGE and fall off the bone. The carnivore in our group loved it. Great wine and extensive beer selection too. Cannot wait to go back and try more dishes!

Salad bar - fresh!

We had an excellent meal, terrific service and awesome value! Here's our secret - we arrived Friday at 4:00 right when they opened. Was seated and greeted by our server quickly. We both ordered the bistro steak and salad bar from the early bird menu ($18.50 + $4.50) plus we added a side of sautéed mushrooms (huge portion see pic) and one of teriyaki to share. The salad bar was fresh, clean and well stocked. Lettuce looked great no wilting at all. Fresh bread, pasta salad and a few other neat things there. My fiancé took bacon and shredded cheese for her baked potato and they had awesome marinated mushrooms. The staff hovered over salad bar and bread area while we were there cleaning it regularly (bravo!). Our bistro steaks were excellent! So tender and served sliced 75% way thru like a London broil but it's a shoulder cut. With the sautéed mushrooms it was a bullseye! It's served with a nice garlic butter sauce so the teriyaki we ordered wasn't really needed. Mashed were excellent with a little bit of seasoning and skins in a super nicely whipped mound. Overall, we really enjoyed our early meal and this is one of the he few places that still have a salad bar. We will definitely be back for that alone. I'll add that when we checked in on Yelp app a 10% discount coupon appeared but it said not valid with happy hour and other discounts so we didn't try to present it. But you can!

Food: 3.8/5 Service: 3.4/5…read moreAmbiance: 3.7/5 Value: 3.6/5 The Charles is a nice upscale restaurant on Main Street in Wethersfield which opened in 2020 and quickly made Connecticut magazine's list of best restaurants. It is inside an old house of some sort, so it has a charming ambiance. They have a small parking lot so the spaces are a bit tight. Then, although we were on time for our 8:15pm reservation, we found out that they didn't have a table for us on the main floor, which is bad because my parents have mobility issues and cannot climb stairs. They asked us if we would be ok waiting five or ten minutes. Sure, that was fine we said. The host was very reassuring and he let us know that the corner table near the fireplace was finishing up and he'd get it bussed promptly. So that was good. But after we sat down we experienced service issues. Many items were unavailable. No orrechiete. No crab cakes. No sirloin special. It was weird. We hadn't arrived that late, on a Saturday night, how could so many dishes be sold out/unavailable? We ended up going with the scotch egg $11 and butternut squash arancini balls $12 for appetizers, which were both great. The scotch egg was a decent size and came with a mini salad. The arancini balls were small, but the truffle gorgonzola fontina cheese filling was really nice. Entrees were not bad. My Berkshire pork chop cooked medium was tender enough and had decent flavor. My Dad's veal ribs over mac and cheese were really good. My Mom's wagyu burger was tasty and my sister's salad was satisfactory. However the cost of the additional protein to the salad seems high (Grilled Chicken +14 / Seared Salmon +16/ Grilled Shrimp +21 / Churrasco Steak +24). The drinks were well made, but took a while to get to us. The "Charles... In Charge!" with old forester bourbon, montenegro, spiced cherry bitters, luxardo $15 was a hit. My Dad enjoyed his $17 Manhattan made with Angel's Envy bourbon. My $11 FreeBird mocktail was refreshing. Yet, throughout the night we found it difficult to get our server's attention. All four dishes did not arrive simultaneously. We had to flag someone down for more silverware after the appetizers were cleared. Right at the end when we were ready to pay, she got tied up listening to a couple at a neighboring table tell her a story or something. This must have been quite a yarn because she was totally enrapt and oblivious to our needs. We started wondering whether our table was actually her responsibility or not. Finally she came by and we let her know we were done, no dessert or after dinner drinks, just the check and a few boxes for takeout please. This was a new restaurant that we hadn't tried before, and maybe I took a risk by booking it for my Dad's 89th birthday, which was supposed to be special. Our experience was okay, and maybe we'd go again in the future, but there were too many more ups and downs this evening than I would have liked for a special occasion. I am rounding up to four stars overall, even though on this particular evening I didn't think each individual component met that mark exactly.

It was really about attention to detail and the steps of service. None of them were there. We saw employees walking past empty tables with dirty dishes and not help clear, and saw no teamwork. My sister made a 6:30 reservation in advance, fully aware it would be busy, and it was. When we arrived, the wait for walk ins was already an hour. At check in, my sister went to the host stand because her phone was having trouble checking us in. The manager on duty at the time, Will, confirmed that he checked us in manually and assured us everything was set. About ten minutes later, my sister approached the host, Liv, because she continued receiving texts about checking in and seating. She simply wanted to make sure there wasn't an issue. Liv told her we were checked in, everything was fine, and to ignore the messages. Important detail: we were a party of five plus a baby. Fast forward nearly an hour later. My niece was understandably losing patience, so I went to the host stand to ask about our table. That's when LIV told me they had texted us, we "weren't ready," and they gave our table away. Let me be clear: they were calling parties by name the entire time. Our name was never called once. And LIV was the SAME PERSON who EXPLICITLY told us to IGNORE the messages. At this point, we were obviously upset. Will and others acted confused and tried to piece together what happened, as if what we were explaining didn't make sense. Eventually, we were told that a large party was about to leave and that table would be ours. Even then, we still waited another ten minutes. Shockingly, NO ONE apologized. The only explanation offered was "miscommunication." Once seated, our server was great, genuinely the only bright spot so far. Unfortunately, when the food arrived, everything was cold. At that point, it was almost expected. Another manager later came to our table, clearly in a higher position than Will. He listened to our side, apologized, offered to remake the food, and gave us a discount. When we paid, our server informed us that an additional discount had been applied. It wasn't until I was literally walking out the door, as the last one to leave, that Will finally said, "Sorry about everything. Have a good night." At that point, it felt far too late. If they're working, count me out.

My happy hour dirty martini with a house potato vodka was better than I expected. I ordered pasta with vodka sauce and my husband had pasta Bolognese. Mine was very good. My husband enjoyed his meal. The restaurant was fairly empty at the time we were there. I walked around, it has a steak house feel. Dark, tasteful, a nice wooden ceiling, slightly stuffy vibe, plenty of wine and bottles on display. Now for the nitpicking. For an upscale restaurant, they don't pay attention to visual details. ( within eye-shot) In the corner walking from the bar to the lobby are a bunch wires going up the wall. It looks spastic and messy. There is a closet behind the bar that has a light in it about as bright as the sun. Left open, or even cracked completely throws off ambiance. There is a lot of clutter behind the counter of the bar which might be functional, it also looks messy. I didn't get a chance to check out the ladies room. She was quick to point out that they also had a bar menu and I decided to try the chickenParmesan small plate. Priced at only $10. This might be the best bargain in town. A rather generous portion of chicken served with spaghetti mix for a lovely meal. Specially when you add one of the delicious salads or apps. Recommend the meatballs and the roasted beet salad. I have only sat in the bar area, so I cannot comment on the restaurant ambience, but where I did sit was both comfortable occasionally quite lively. First time at their Newington location. We were seated a booth - very nice - extra roomy. It's nice that you aren't on top of other people in this restaurant. Nowadays they just pack people in which takes away from the dining experience. Started by splitting a Caesar salad. Forgot to take a picture - probably because it was so good and we were lost in conversation. My boyfriend got the filet with twin lobster tails special. He enjoyed the filet and I had the lobster tails. The lobster tails were huge! The waitress mentioned they normally put some sort of a spice on them but I asked for it to be left off as lobster is delicious on its own (I just asked for butter on the side). Unfortunately, they put salt on the lobster tails which kind of ruined the flavor, however the lobster was nice and fresh, so I just dunked them in butter to mask the salty taste. Lobster is so flavorful and delicious by itself - it doesn't need anything other than lemon and maybe some butter. Chefs are always trying to do different things with lobster and they don't need to. Perhaps they put too much salt in the water they cooked it with. We also split the Au Gratin Potatoes. I must not have read that it had three cheeses in it. WOW was that a lot of cheese. A bit much. Very tasty but too much cheese. It was also quite small. We got the flourless chocolate cake for dessert and I have to say I normally love these, but this had an espresso flavor to it. Like lobster, chocolate is good as it is - no need to add different flavors to it. I hate tiramisu/espresso flavored desserts typically, so that flavor ruined this for me. I wish they mentioned it had an espresso flavor in it. I will ask in the future when ordering at restaurants. Service impeccable. Just a few things that kept this from a 5 star review. We did bring in our own bottle of wine so they will allow that, you just have to pay the $25 corkage fee. Nice evening. Will be back.

When I arrived I was told it would be a 45 minute wait. Basically my reservation was useless. The 2 greeters made no attempt to address this whatsoever and didn't care at all. We decided to wait at the bar 2. The bar was not crowded with a couple of bartenders. We placed our order. The bartender looked like she didn't know what she was doing and greeted us with about as little enthusiasm and happiness as possible. (Maybe she was having a bad day). She didn't seem to know how to mix two drinks; a manhattan and a Negroni. She couldn't answer our question about what gin she had at the bar and just told us to ' look' as she pointed behind her. Then it took about 10 minutes for three drinks to arrive; the poorly made Negroni, a Coors light in the bottle (she never asked if I wanted a glass), the wrong glass of white wine that she had to redo with the correct one, then after 5 more minutes the manhattan arrived, also made poorly. She didn't charge us for that drink due to the delay saying she had to wait to get the vermouth. That's an odd excuse from a bartender. I've been a paid bartender, I know what to expect and she was just horrible. I'm sorry but that's a plain fact. If she worked for me I would have fired her on the spot and took over myself. 3. By this time, about 7:50, we were seated at an outside table. The crowd was dying down but our waitress was less than attentive and certainly not prompt. We have dietary allergies that she promptly noted but did nothing about as she said she would check wth the kitchen about of couple of possible choices we had interest in, but never came back to give us the answer. Now being quite impatient, we ordered anyway based on the menu description. One appetizer could not be eaten because of the allergy. We asked for the wine list, that never arrived, and it was 10 minutes until she came back to the table, but we ordered without it. The waitress seemed like she could care less about how we were doing or how she was performing her job. After dinner, ironically, the manager stopped by to ask how everything was, but we quickly said things were OK only because it would have taken too much time to make note of everything that had gone wrong. By now it was after 9 and my reservation was at 7. We had to leave. Suffice it to say, we won't be back. A sad overall experience indeed. I don't expect this restaurant and or management will be around for long as I have no reason to believe we were the only party to endure this horrible dining experience.
