I had a tough day and was craving the largest margarita I could physically picture, and so I made the journey out to Chuck's because I knew it could provide this to me for a reasonable price. Chuck's is close enough to both UConn and ECSU to certainly tend to pull a college-crowd, with a rowdier first floor and a conveniently quieter second floor. The waitstaff are accommodating and typically ask where you'd like to sit, so we went for a second floor seating. The food is exactly what you want it to be--huge margaritas, enough food for 3 meals, deliciously fried up chips and salsa. This place was a favorite of mine in college, and it certainly holds up. Excellent service, and all of the food was fantastic. The ambiance is cozy and inviting. Restaurant is clean. French onion soup deserves a special mention as does the es cargot. Service was absolutely terrible, pathetic. We two went last night around 4:30 pm waitress took our order and didn't receive our main course until around 5:57:02 pm the waitress never checked back with us while all around us everyone else got their food and left - some who even came in after us. We have been going there on occasion but not as our first choice since they opened in 1970. Waitress and management issued major unabashed excuses and said our orders had been moved to back of line and they were busy and not their duty to check on our orders. As a server they should check. They obviously could see that no dinner plates were on our table yet had two take our salad plates away 2x as we were starved as they brought the next tables order and their bill. The food has always run hot and cold there. Sometimes good and bad. One filet was undercooked. We did not order cheap meals. All management offered in a nasty response was two desserts. A classic steakhouse best known for its salad bar that has staff keeping up with it. Has all the pieces to make a salad plus marinated mushrooms, tuna mac and bread. The dining area is quite large and we were able to snag a corner area with our toddler. The staff was really great and did what they could to get our food out and ready so our guy wasn't sitting for too long. I had the NY strip which was cooked just as I requested and the steamed brocolli had good seasoning (not just salt and pepper). The kids burger is very large! I have drove by this restaurant for years and finally had a chance to come for dinner with friends. My friends have been coming here for years and raved about the food and salad bar. Upon arrival, the rather large parking lot was fill but we lucked out and found a parking spot close to the entrance. Although it was quite busy on a friday night, we were able to be seated pretty quickly. The restaurant is alot larger than it looks from outside. We were lucky to get booth seating close to the salad bar. We had a great dining experience. Our server was attentive and very friendly. Two of my best friends and I get together for a birthday dinner every year. We have literally been doing it for 39 years. We were all born within two days of each other and first met in junior high school last night. We decided to go to Chuck's. We all agreed it was one of the best steaks we ever had so were the appetizers, the wine and dessert we very rarely eat this much but we had everything a full three course meal and the salad bar not cheap, but absolutely satisfying. Highly recommended for a great steak, nice ambience, and fixings. Service was very good but when we ordered a bottle of wine, they kept bringing us individual glasses until they got it right. 3/4/23 My first time dining at Chuck's Steak House and I must say I'm very impressed. The occasion was a belated Christmas family get together because I missed it due to a case of Covid in late December-early January. Reservations were made about six weeks prior and a good thing at that! This place was MOBBED at 5:00 PM on this Early March Saturday. Service was exemplary from start to finish despite being so crazy busy. The steaks we ordered were all very tender, and cooked exactly as ordered. My prime rib was extremely flavorful and tender though a bit fatty, even as prime rib usually is. The all you could eat salad bar was an up-charge, but well worth it. Everything was fresh, and crisp, with macaroni salads available. Cocktails were well poured, and desserts were fresh and portioned nicely. It happened to be an unusually busy night but the whole staff hustled and worked together- we noticed how hard you all work!! Buffalo shrimp. Amazinggggg- would go back here just for that and a cocktail anyday. We also got the salmon, killer tuna dish, and the ribs- holy cow those ribs were HUGE and fall off the bone. We had an excellent meal, terrific service and awesome value! Here's our secret - we arrived Friday at 4:00 right when they opened. Was seated and greeted by our server quickly. We both ordered the bistro steak and salad bar from the early bird menu ($18.50 + $4.50) plus we added a side of sautéed mushrooms (huge portion see pic) and one of teriyaki to share. The salad bar was fresh, clean and well stocked. Lettuce looked great no wilting at all. Fresh bread, pasta salad and a few other neat things there. My fiancé took bacon and shredded cheese for her baked potato and they had awesome marinated mushrooms. The staff hovered over salad bar and bread area while we were there cleaning it regularly (bravo!). Our bistro steaks were excellent! So tender and served sliced 75% way thru like a London broil but it's a shoulder cut. With the sautéed mushrooms it was a bullseye! It's served with a nice garlic butter sauce so the teriyaki we ordered wasn't really needed. Mashed were excellent with a little bit of seasoning and skins in a super nicely whipped mound. Overall, we really enjoyed our early meal and this is one of the he few places that still have a salad bar. We will definitely be back for that alone. I'll add that when we checked in on Yelp app a 10% discount coupon appeared but it said not valid with happy hour and other discounts so we didn't try to present it. But you can! read more

It's a steakhouse straight out of 1970, complete with dark wood, brick, & a salad bar. The salad bar had a dedicated staff member refilling, cleaning, and keeping everything tidy. You can even make your own Cesar salad, including anchovies (!!!). The beer selection is rather good, with many local breweries available. I ordered the escargot to start. I received a ceramic dish full of the little snails, along with an incredible garlic butter. It was accompanied by a crunchy toast, which was perfect to sop up all the garlic butter. (This will be a theme) One thing that was odd was that no bread was served. It was available at the salad bar, but not served at the table. My bistro steak arrived with more of that same garlic butter. Our served, Nic, brought me over more garlic butter for my baked potato. The steak was seved 75% sliced, like a hasselback potato, which I'd never seen. It was tasty, with good beef flavor. I was really impressed at the $25 price tag. Our server was professional. She kept our beverages filled and plates cleared with a minimum of fuss. She even brought more garlic butter for my to-go container. I can't wait to take my extended family here. Last evening, at 5:05pm, my wife and I went to Chuck for another great dinner. The person who greeting us ask me where I wanted to sit and I told him the room with the fireplace. He was slightly hesitant about my request and then He told me that they had a party of 14 to be in there at 7:00pm. I told him that we would be gone by then, so he sat us in the room, everything is fine. The waitress was great and got our order. I ordered the Onion Soup and we both got NY Strip. Great. The Onion Soup and it was great, but I was not even halfway done with the soup when our steaks came. We were told that the manger wanted us to get them them to us quickly, so we could be done in time for the party to come into that room. At this point, we felt very rushed and really did not enjoy the great steak dinner that was in front of us. If you felt that we were going to interfere with the party of 14, then we should not have been seated there. Just a note here, the four people who were in that room before us, were still there when we left. We parked in the back and while walking to the front of restaurant noticed an older crowd sitting by the windows. Walking to our table, we noticed more mature customers and no families or children customers. We gave our drink and food order to the waitress, filet mignon with baked potato and ny strip with fries and we got the salad bar. The salad ingredients were the usual but fresh and constantly restocked while we were seated. The food arrived and the steaks looked delicious and were well prepared. The baked potato was the perfect size but the fries were burnt and "looked" old. The waitstaff was attentive but not under foot. The pricing makes the older crowd understandable. My mom took me out for dinner. I didn't know what to expect, it had been years since I had been to Chuck's. We both ordered salads to start, a garden and the wedge. There's a picture of the garden salad below. It was huge and bursting with very fresh vegetables. I ordered the prime rib rare and mom had the top sirloin med rare, the temperature on both was perfect. The meat was tender and flavorful. I can't continue this review without mentioning Frank. Hands down the best server I've had in many years. He's turned it into an art form. Everything was perfect, his timing thoughtful and impeccable. What can I say about Chuck's Steakhouse... I have been going to this restaurant with my family for decades, and at every visit we always left happy and satisfied by their service and quality and quantity of food. Anytime I want a good steak, this is the place to go. They're more fairly priced for better quality than some of these over priced yuppie restaurants. Not only do they do steak to near perfection, their apps are on point all the way and they're coming out with more. With a full bar there too, you have a complete piece of Rocky Hill excellence that I always am happy to frequent. Staff and service is also on point being friendly and swift with food distribution. Atmosphere and it's ambiance is perfect for dates. I just hope they go back to their old wooden menus. They were cool and a classic. read more

After some "educational" messages between myself the the owner of Chucks I am modifying my review. He states that he has a strong local following, which is wonderful, and I was ruining his reputation and dislikes platforms like Yelp because it hurts businesses. I personally like Yelp and appreciate the honest feedback given by customers. I have never had an owner contact me in the manner he did over my review. Again, this is MY review and I'm not one of his dedicated, local customers. Went here for my husbands birthday on a Thursday as he had not been there in years and wanted to try it. Unfortunately we didn't have the best experience. I mentioned to the waitress twice that it was my husband's birthday, she was looking at me when I said it but never acknowledged me. As a former waitress I would have said "happy birthday" and put a candle on a dessert when it was ordered. But that's just my experience. Waitress gave me attitude when I asked for a cocktail menu. She told me twice that they had a stocked bar and could make anything. I personally prefer cocktail menus to try new drinks as I get tired of the same old ones. I would expect staff to push their cocktails. She reluctantly gave me the menu with an attitude and stated "is this what you wanted" . I ordered a wonderful raspberry lemon cocktail. My son ordered a virgin strawberry daiquiri, I sent his drink back because the taste was off and strawberries very bitter. They remade the drink with newer strawberries and it was very good, color was even better. The waitress told me that the strawberries weren't fresh so the bartender remade it even though we asked for a soda. Too bad there wasn't any quality control in the beginning. The waitress seemed frustratated when she took the drink back which confused me as I was polite and stated that the drink was "off". You get to pick one side dish with your steak, a few potato options, rice, or a veggie, there were only only 2 veggies to choose from broccoli or brussel sprouts (for an extra charge). Salad bar is extra and they do not offer bread for the table. Prime rib was pretty good but very fatty. My husband ordered the Chucks bistro steak, medium rare. It was more medium, very chewy, and wasn't very good. Husband was very disappointed. My son got the filet with a lobster tail, lobster was $35, very small and overcooked. The side dishes were not consistent and all four of us had different potions. We didn't bother with dessert. My family and I will not be returning to this establishment. For what I paid at chucks, I would have gotten a much better meal at J Gilberts or Ruth Chris. Both places I have been to and had a wonderful experience as you can see from my reviews. This is my first visit to Chuck's Steakhouse. Its located on a less crowded section of the Silas Deane Highway. When you enter its got a country decor. I enjoyed the decor. It sets the tone for your experience. A relaxed atmosphere. The waitress was very friendly. She was quick with all our needs. I was disappointed to find out that unlike most restaurants, they don't offer bread/butter before your meals or entrees. Its not a deal breaker though! My wife ordered a Barbeque Chicken Sandwich, I got a Teriyaki Steak Sandwich and my daughter got a Kids pizza. We got our meals and they looked GREAT. The amount of steak on my sandwich was more than enough to fill me (what bread/butter?) The steak was very juicy and it had a great taste. I got just enough fries to be compliment the sandwich. My wife said her Barbeque Chicken sandwich was really juicy too. She said it wasn't overcooked or burnt. My daughter pizza wasn't a microwaved pizza. It was an actual personally made pizza. It was big enough for my daughter to eat half with her fries and have the other half for another meal. The prices are EXCELLENT for the quality of food and we will definetly be back again. I'm not a fan of Mexican food, but I am a fan of steaks. I've had at least 10 Filet Mignons there and each one was cooked to perfection and the beef was delicious and succulent. I order my steaks, medium rare and the Broiler Man was right on the money each time. A fantastic experience. read more

We probably eat here twice a year. The food it great and the service is friendly. Today is our anniversary, and the place we planned to go to dinner was closed, so we went to Chuck's by default. Everything was absolutely perfect. Our waiter was so very attentive, and what I really liked was that he knew the items on the menu and described what he likes about them. I got the prime rib for the first time and it melted in my mouth. It's my new favorite. I had it with brussel sprouts because the waiter said how good they are. I have only one complaint, and that is having to go slice my bread at the salad bar (we don't get salad bar with our meals). My husband is in a wheelchair and I have bad arthritis. I'm sure they'd bring bread to us if we asked, but we forget. But it seems there's a lot going on up there, and then people have to wait for each person to cut bread. Also, I've seen people get confused and just think they can get salad while they're getting bread, even if they didn't pay for salad. read more

The experience was so bizarre and horrendous that the manger comped us 3X what we paid and mentioned that he's heard these things about this bartender before. Bar area was half full. After someone sat down next to us 20+ minutes after we ordered and received their steak before our food was brought out. We asked our bartender for an update on our meals and were met with an attitude. That attitude from the bartender continued to escalate until she went to the kitchen and brought out our overcooked burger and a cold meatloaf. We returned the food and her attitude escalated further. We asked to speak to a manger and he was very accommodating and polite. The exact opposite of the bartender. So there was a lone bright spot. Chucks is one of our favorite steak houses. There are not many left in CT anymore but the one in sticky Hill is top notch. I miss the salad bar-due to Covid 19 protocols but I'm hopeful it will come back someday soon. The steak is always cooked to satisfaction. The drinks are reasonably priced. We had the restaurant to ourselves on this late Sunday afternoon! Steaks were on our mind so we opted for Chucks. For starters we each had a house salad with ranch dressing, salads were a good size and plenty of dressing on the side. I got the 8oz filet with 2 stuffed shrimp and hubby got 12oz strip steak with lobster tail. Both steaks were done to perfection, cooked as ordered and flavorful (yes, butter indeed!). My shrimp were very tasty, but disappointed in the lobster tail that was over cooked so it was rubbery and didn't taste good. Too bad since it was a costly item! Sides included a baked potato, good size, cooked well with butter and sour cream served on the side, and steamed broccoli which was delicious with a subtle crispness. A steak man himself and looking for a place to bring his FIL for dinner Mark C and I decided to head to Chuck's Steak House (a local steak institution in the Hartford Area) for a Christmas Eve Eve. Although not a huge red meat fan, I pursued the menu prior and was happy to see that they had a variety of chicken and seafood options for me to choose.; Since it was Christmas week - I called ahead to see if we could make reservations and was told that they only do so for parties of 8 or more. So we arrived at 6pm, and after waiting about 15-20 minutes (in a very, very cramped waiting area) were seated in the dining area. 15-20 minutes is not a bad wait time - however, when we walked to the dining room it was not packed and the majority of the people were in the bar area. Seems like they were understaffed. Our waitress came over and we gave our order. I asked if I could substitute the potato for broccoli and was told I could but it would be $2 extra. This was also the same price that the broccoli was listed for on the "Sides" portion of the menu - so it's not a substitution, something that the waitress could not grasp. I love that like Dakota's, Chuck's has a salad bar and bread included in the meal. However the quarters are tight for getting your salad if there are a lot of people that have the same idea you do and that is what happened to me. The fixing were fresh and I liked that you got to cut your own bread to bring back with you. Drinks were brought and salad consumed and then we waited and waited and waited. For two steaks and my chicken it took over an hour. Sorry - but the steaks were not bone in and the dining room was not that busy. I would have loved to ask why our food was taking so long but we could not find our waitress to inquire about this nor to get a refill of our drinks. Finally the food arrived - but it was just OK. Mark C. asked that his steak be cooked medium rare and it was on the cusp if not over to medium. I ordered the two chicken breast which the menu claimed were "12oz" but I think that some of the portion of the chicken was left in the kitchen AND on top of that the chicken was not very moist. I am ashamed to admit that I had to ask for Dijon mustard to make it palatable. Our starch was a baked sweet potato - a nice touch for $1 extra - and although a bit small (compared to the one that my FIL received) it was perfectly cooked. All said and done our meal (which took a total of about 2 hours) cost us $117 and I left disappointed. The company was great but the food was lackluster. I hope that we caught them on a bad night because it seemed to me that Chuck's is resting on it's name and that's never a good thing. read more
