First off, that sandwich was the best thing I've had in a really long time. That might be recency bias but it is what it is. I had the Drayton which was a hot sandwich that had Chicken Ham & Pineapple. Not only was the chicken so tasty and the very flavorful... what stood out to me the most was how soft the bread was. Absolutely made a difference. This was my first time being here so shoutout to Ariana (hope I spelled it correctly) for the recommendation, it was delicious! She was very nice and inviting to me as a newcomer. Great service!

Absolutely fantastic sandwich spot! The sandwich was loaded with meat, fresh ingredients, and packed with flavor. You definitely get your money's worth with the generous portions. I'll be back on my next Santa Cruz trip.

Sandwiches were stacked, service was lovely, shop had seating available. I'd definitely return. I really liked my pastrami! They offer fun sauce flavors like pesto or chipotle mayo!

Great spot for an easy lunch on the way to the beach! Their logo is so cute and interior features their mascot: the dog Chunk. Service is super friendly and kind as a family business. They've got some great pre-built options for both toasty or cold sandwiches. I would highlight their Beach Box combo: 2 sandwiches, 2 chips, and 2 drinks for $36 total. I opted to create my own sandwich for a simple turkey, avocado, and veggie build on a delicious sourdough bread. They've got a homemade garlic mayo which really took the sandwich over the top. My friend had their pesto mayo-- also a huge hit! Sandwiches are a bit pricey, mine coming out to $18.48 with tax+tip (incl. +$2 for avocado). However, they definitely taste very homemade and fresh. Absolutely bookmarking this spot for future trips down the coast.

I'm always on the lookout for a sandwich with a good bread-to-filling ratio. The Pezzi is a great and filling sandwich. I like mortadella but have to be careful to ask whether it contains pistachios (I'm allergic to nuts). This mortadella was nut-free and delicious. Lots of veggies too! I'll be back.

Toasted Pastrami and Swiss with banana peppers

Had a hankering for banana peppers in a sandwich. I decided on the pastrami with the melted Swiss and added banana peppers. The roll got a little soggy on the bottom. But the pastrami was stellar: tender and juicy. I thought it was really good. Also got the burger and added bacon. It came with fries that were perfectly crisp on the outside. We sat outside on the patio with our dog. Sandwiches took about the time that we went through the local newspaper and read all the menus for restaurant week. The service was great. Kind people working here.

We were very pleased with our decision to try out Chunk's. The space is clean with both indoor and outdoor seating, which made the visit feel comfortable and relaxed. Our sandwiches were served warm and were clearly well made. The staff was very friendly and added to the overall positive experience. We'll definitely be back.

Looked like family owned place. Very welcoming environment. All the dishes we ordered were freshly made. Philly cheesesteak had good amount of meat and fresh green peppers. Bread of all sandwiches was freshly made and crunchy on the top and soft inside. Meatball sandwich had hot meatballs and we were informed that they are trying a new marinara recipe. Personally would like more garlic and herbs but that's a personal choice. Our little one loved the burger- well seasoned, fresh tomatoes, onion, pickles and lettuce. Fries had good portion, crispy and well seasoned. All in all would love to support a local, family owned business.

FOR THE LOVE OF SANDWHICHES! 10 out of 10. This place is off the hook good. Best Philly I have ever had. I added American cheese and banana peppers. These are specialty craft Sammie's made with love. Best place in Sc County

Me and my fiancé came here after I just moved to Santa Cruz from the east bay and have been craving a true homemade old school Philly cheesesteak like the ones back home. THIS PLACE DID NOT DISAPPOINT! Also, try and catch Susan when she is working, she is just a sweetheart and made great recommendations of the menu . Hopefully next time we get to meet Chunk!

I rarely give a place 5 stars but this place is awesome and everyone has to try it. Chicken pineapple ham sandwich sounds strange but it's amazing. Pastrami is the best. Clamchowder is also a must.

    Delicious!!!

I did a build your own (Chunk Factory) veggie sandwich and omg tastes like homemade sammy! Super fresh ingredients, warm crispy bread, just dreamy. Very cozy place, I also relish in the notion the place is named after the owner's dog :).

    Toasted Pastrami and Swiss

Toasted Pastrami and Swiss was so good. You know when the food is so good, you get quiet and just focus on eating? That's what happened. I like how they have a beach box combo which includes two sandwiches, two chips, and two sodas. Worth it! Staff is friendly too and the decor is cool inside.

The counter service female was very nice and helpful. The sandwich was very good and we've eaten there many times in the past. When we both sat down to eat we noticed that our sandwich hadn't been cut in half. My girlfriend went back to the counter and asked a male kitchen employee behind the counter if he could cut our sandwich in half. The sandwich was completely wrapped in paper and we did not unwrap it at all prior to asking for it to be cut. His response was extremely rude and nasty. He claimed that it was already contaminated despite the fact that it was still completely wrapped in paper. He acted like we were putting him out by us asking him to simply cut the sandwich in half. He accused my girlfriend of "contaminating" the sandwich (in his words) just by touching it despite the fact that it was handled by 2 people before we even touched it. Basically, it was his scolding condescending tone that totally turned us off to ever visiting this place again. It only takes one lazy a--hole employee to ruin a great dining experience.

I had the spicy Devil's Ginger vodka martini with the calamari appetizer and with dinner, the Lava Top Sauvignon Blanc ($13), a perfect complement to the swordfish. My swordfish was perfectly sautéed in a tapenade beurre blanc sauce ($40) with deliciously creamy and decadent polenta and buttery chopped bok choy. The way they served the bok choy was perfect- never change it. It was artsy, buttery and didn't look wilted. My son had the grilled boneless pork chops (two boneless chops) with fries and smoky beans ($28), loved. He devoured the berry fruit crisp à la mode for dessert ($12) and I had two small bites: It was like granola over compote with ice cream. I didn't complain. The best part was the incredibly flawless service. We could have felt rushed dining since it was towards the end of service. Instead, Genevieve paced the meal perfectly so we felt spoiled and unrushed. Next visit I would love to dine in their "secret garden" courtyard; it was beautiful. Their 'secret garden' would be beautiful for a private party like a birthday or wedding anniversary, bridal or baby shower.

(I have, no joke, walked by it dozens of times without realizing it!) I found it from seeing it on a list of restaurant participants for Burger Week. Overall, I give Pete's 3.5 stars, and here's why... **Ambiance: 5 stars** With the bright and tastefully-decorated dining room along with the multiple windows overlooking the spectacular beach, you really can't beat this ambiance! Pete's has the fine-dining vibe that's perfect for that first date, anniversary or other special dining occasion when you want some quiet and mood lighting. **Service: 4 stars** We were seated right away, even without reservations. It was a Sunday, and there was no wait or crowd. Service was quick and friendly. Mid-dinner, a server broke some glassware right behind my seat and needed us to move so they could sweep under our table and feet. They ended up moving us to a better table (next to the window) instead of having us stand there to watch them sweep. Accidents happen, and I felt they handled that well. **Food: 3 stars** Every item we ordered was delicious and fresh, and all arrived quickly. However, the menu was fairly compact, and the amount of food is even more compact. I was excited Pete's had lobster rolls (one of my all-time favorite food items EVER; $28) on their menu, so I didn't hesitate to order that along with a lychee martini. My partner ordered the bolognese ($30) and an old fashioned. We ordered the polenta as an appetizer. All of it was tasty, but oh-so-small. The cheddar polenta was like a taste test size (maybe 4 TBs), and the lobster roll was the smallest I had ever seen in my life. I didn't want to be rude, but I wanted to laugh when it arrived at our table! The lobster roll was smaller than my hand. It looked like circus food with all super tiny sizes. **Price/Value: 2 stars** You don't come to Pete's for the value because the portions are.... micro. TIP: If you have a big appetite or skipped a meal that day, I suggest going elsewhere or be ready to turn over a paycheck because you'll need to order a lot to fill up. It is worth it, however, if you fancy a light-filled room with views of the sparkling ocean and sounds of the waves crashing on the golden sands of Capitola!

I searched around the area for some popular bakeries and Gayle's came up on top, so off we went to try it out. As expected, the place was very busy when we walked in, we immediately grabbed a number, and waited to be called to place our order at the counter. It'd be a good idea, though, if you had made a good round to browse at all the goodies they have to offer, so you know what you want once your number is called... at least this is what we did. So, we ordered the Pain de Amande (almond croissant... my fave), a Bear Claw (loved these as a teenager), a Raspberry Napolean, and a Fresh Berry Tartelette with pastry cream. OMG! The almond croissant was aaammmaaazzing! I'm going to say this with all confidence, but this was the very best almond croissant of ever eaten! The croissant had a very nice light crisp on the outside, lovely dense layers of pastry inside, and that almond paste was just the best.... it has excellent flavor, just the right sweetness... not overly, and just pulled the whole croissant together to give one amazing yummy bite.... that you won't be able to stop eating! The Raspberry Napolean was excellent too....a bit sweet because of the raspberry jam. Regular Napoleans have flaky layers holding the sweet fillings, but this was more of a butter biscuit layer.... not quite the same, but still oh so yummy! The berry fruit tartelette was also excellent... fresh berries on that delicious pastry cream, inside a perfectly baked pastry shell. Lastly, the Bear Claw.... used to be one of my favorites, but I thought it needed something more most and creamy or moist on the inside, otherwise it tasted just a little bit dry.... still very good, but just needed something more. The one thing all the delicious baked goods we tried had was, they were obviously very freshly baked with the freshest ingredients.... and prepared to perfection. If I'm ever in the area again, I will definitely pay another visit to Gayle's as their pastries are simply the best you'll ever find anywhere.

We brought our dog, who was welcome outside, but keep in mind that if you have a large dog or one who likes to sniff everyone in the surrounding area, you might want to leave them at home as it's close quarters there. Coffee was delicious and they kept the refills coming. We ordered the Capitola Chaos after seeing many positive reviews, and The Avenue (eggs scrambled with feta, artichoke, and tomato). The eggs came with hashbrowns - super good - and toast. Portions were really big! Everything was tasty. The staff was friendly and attentive. Check this place out for brunch!

We just finished camping at New Brighton Beach campgrounds over the weekend. Before heading home…read morewe decided to eat breakfast at a local cafe in Capitola about 10-15 minutes away from the campgrounds. We arrived at Avenue Cafe on a Sunday morning for breakfast recently. The cafe is located in a nice area down the street from Capitola Beach in downtown Capitola. Paid parking is accessible along the streets and the parking lot across the street. Avenue Cafe is a small, family friendly, local neighborhood cafe. There is a mom and pops vibe to it. The cafe space looks like it was formally a house. They did a great job transforming the space into a nice cozy cafe. The outdoor patio looks inviting. We ordered a mimosa, coffee, country fried steak with sunny side up eggs, smoked salmon avocado eggs Benedict, and an eggs combo with pancakes & bacon. Everything was delicious. The breakfast definitely hit the spot after a long weekend camping. My country fried steak was scrumptious with every bite. The gravy was hearty. The fried potatoes were crispy and tasty. Our son said his pancakes combo was yummy. Overall we enjoyed our experience at Avenue Cafe. The staff were friendly and accommodating. The bustling local neighborhood environment was wonderful. The price point was fair. We hope to be back to try other food items on the menu.
