My friend and I took the Metro North here to partake in the Lunch Special before our Irving's Legend at Sunnyside event. We arrived at the restaurant a little before 3PM and were told that the Lunch Special had ended. However, at the time we went, the online menu stated that the Lunch Special went on until 3PM. I pointed that out and thankfully, a different waiter allowed us to order from the Lunch Special menu. The decor and set up of the place was lovely with fancy touches. I ordered a Mango Lassi, as well as a Lunch Special Platter. The Mango Lassi was sweet and refreshing, though not thick enough for me. For my meal, I went with the Goan Shrimp Curry with Garlic Naan (for an additional charge). This was served with onion fritters, sag paneer, basmati rice, cucumber raita, pappadum, as well as rice pudding. The Goan Shrimp Curry only had 3 shrimps in it, but they were large in size and quite juicy. The Curry sauce was wonderfully comforting, savory, and well seasoned. Onion Fritters were perfectly crispy and full of bold flavor. The rice was cooked well and Garlic Naan was delightfully buttery with strong garlic taste. Rice pudding was nicely fragrant and sweet. Service was good. Our waiter was friendly and accommodating. Everything came out in a timely manner. Prices were reasonable. I might return if I'm in the area, but would not go out of my way to do so. read more

We went to Chutney Masala for dinner recently and it was absolutely delicious. We went a little overboard and ordered 4 appetizers and 2 entrees and everything was delicious. The restaurant itself is very nice. I will say, they didn't have the lights dim at all, so it was quite bright in there, which kind of took away from the date night ambience of it. That being said, they clearly do a lot of take out orders and that might be part of why they have the lights up brighter. The staff was friendly enough. This is definitely a place where they are not trying to get done and out the door quickly. If you are on a time crunch, either choose somewhere else or let them know in advance. They encourage ordering the courses one at a time (ie they'll come back for your order for mains) and they do not hover at all. There is overall a lack of attentiveness, but it really has more to do with them leaving you to enjoy your meal than not wanting to help. We got the avocado paapdi chat. I have never had anything like this at an Indian restaurant. It was incredibly refreshing, which was surprising because Indian food tends to be heavier and more hearty. Absolutely recommend. We also go the tikki trio, the paneer Kati rolls (my favorite appetizer we got), and the lamb samosas. The lamb samosas were the only thing that didn't absolutely blow us away. They were perfectly nice, but the other dishes were awesome. We then got the Dal Tadka and the chicken saagwala and some garlic naan. The dal was great. Had almost of a stew/soup consistency, but I could have eaten it for days (and then I used the leftovers for a kind of indian/lentil shakshuka, so I was super happy to have leftovers). The chicken was perfectly cooked. Super tender and juicy and the saag was so smooth and flavorful. Overall, would absolutely come back. The prices are also incredibly reasonable. We picked lunch specials of fish curry and chicken tikki masala. the chicken was the definite winner. the fish tasted like rehydrated fish so I would skip that if you don't like that texture/taste. Nice little Indian restaurant, we went in for early dinner. It got was pretty much full. Luckily we didn't have to wait. The service was good as soon as we got in they serviced us with papad and some dips, they kept checking in and gave good feedback on their menu items and provided with recommendations. Their thali was good mix of a lot of dishes, very good. However, we felt that the mutton kheema was a little too salty that day, and their poori was good but it was a little thick more like a battura another Indian dish. read more

It was okay ! nice ambiance plenty of parking and nice staff. it's a bit overpriced for what they offer and the ingridients is straight from Costco even the cutlery and plates. i was kind of sad when i asked for diet coke and from the can but not the bar nozzle and the waitress came back and lied saying its from a can. when the server came i asked if they had diet coke and he said no we only served through the spray nozzle so epic point off for lying on diet coke what a shame. i got mixed grill and it was undercook and pink but the fish curry was fantastic! the appetizer was chili chicken and that was good too. This is by far one of the best Indian spots I've visited recently. The chaat won my heart with a blast of all the flavors and textures that you'd ever want and expect from "the most popular Indian street food". I sat at the bar since I was alone and looked out at the lovely restaurant that was still quiet since it was on the early side. Plenty of take out orders ....plus it started to get busier as it got a bit later. Papadum was delicious as was the traditional naan and mango chutney. The Chana masala was my main dish and the only thing I'd change is that I'd order it spicier. They can kick things up a notch if you want! Otherwise, it was awesome. Service was great! We love this place! We've gotten takeout from here many times. Never sat at the restaurant, but it looks very nice, so it's definitely on our to-do list. The food is always delicious and the portions generous. I really appreciate that their menu is marked so you can see what things have possible allergens - nuts, dairy, wheat. Makes it a lot easier for someone who needs to avoid those things! The staff is always nice on the phone and in person. The food seems a bit pricey, but we always get multiple servings from what we order, so I think it's still a good deal - especially for the wonderful flavors! Highly recommend! read more

What was intended to be a quick pitstop to get some chai on a cold winter evening turned out to be an hour long break at this lovely restaurant, tucked away from the city in the town of Irvington. The restaurant walls capture photo highlights of the erstwhile royal families in the northwestern province of Punjab, the ambience was pleasant and soothing. Indian Food in Irvington Newest entrant to New York's Michelin Guide this year is Chutney Masala in Irvington-on-Hudson, an affluent suburban village in Westchester County. (Literary trivia : Irvington was named in honor of the author Washington Irving who then lived nearby and was still alive at the time of the naming.) The food at Chutney Masala is undeniably Indian, but some options are adjusted to the palate of those uninitiated to Indian spice. Unfortunately was disappointed this time. We've been mulitple times including last year and we loved it and came back again. Sad to say our favorite part was the tamarind chutney they served with the papadum. For appetizers we ordered imli baigan and the ambi jheenga. The baigan was over coated, it felt like I was just eating batter. The ambi jheenga was disappointing too, I thought it would have mango flavor as promised but we couldn't taste it at all. For entrees we got lamb nilgiri korma and malai kebab. The korma was rather flavorless, not something I would expect from Indian cooking. The malai kebab has been good everytime we've come including this time. The rice was plenty. We got paneer kulcha and the filling was scant and rather blant, no seasoning in the filling. I had a nice Valentine's Day lunch here with my mom. The table was pretty, with a nice candle and flower on it and they had a special Valentine's Day menu. We started off with the avocado chaat which was perfection. It had nice large crisps with yogurt, tamarind mint and creamy avocado. Omg! It was just fabulous. For entrées, we ordered the chicken korma, the chicken chettinad, and I asked for naan to be made with garlic and chilies. The chicken korma was creamy and flavorful. I had never tried the chicken Chettinad, which had a nice heat to it and was presented in a tomato sauce. But best of all was the naan! Who doesn't love fluffy pillows of bread adorned with chili peppers and garlic? It was just perfect To soak up these silky, spicy sauces. The service was excellent, and our waiter listen to what I had seen pictures of and told me he could make any naan that I wanted.... And boy did he! This restaurant is pretty, and very welcoming. I was disappointed with my recent lunch at Chutney Masala. First, the servers were indifferent and unfriendly. The food itself was a mixed bag - a couple of good items and some really bad ones. I ordered the lunch platter with Chicken Tikka Masala. The chicken was tasty - but there were only 2 small cubes of chicken - not enough to feed a child! The dal was good, the naan, raita and rice were very mediocre. The onion fritters were greasy and tough with bits of onion skin carelessly left in. The saag paneer was inedible, as was the rice pudding dessert - absolutely terrible. I love Indian food, but I will be eating it somewhere else in Westchester. read more

Came here for a dinner on a Wednesday and they were easily able to accommodate a table for 5 right away. Very Covid compliant, masks & spaced out seating. The menu has many options and is broken down into proteins- poultry, vegetarian, fish, etc. They also have a great starter/appetizers selection-- we got the chickpea dusted fried vegetables (crunchy and perfect for sharing). I went with the Goan Vegetable Curry, minus the carrots, and it was super flavorful... also, very spicy, which I loved (suggestion would be try it the way it comes before considering adding anymore spice). It comes with rice however, pairing it with the garlic naan is also a nice choice. All the flavors are fresh, bold and top notch delicious. Definitely recommend and will be back. read more

This is one of my favorite Indian restaurants. I do have a few. I came here and had the mulligatawny soup--absolutely fabulous!! I had the chicken tikka and a vegetarian vindaloo--so good! Their dishes are full of flavor and worth the try. The service is great! The interior is more of a local modern ambiance than a typical Indian restaurant. Parking can be tough so be prepared to park far and walk up a steep Main Street. read more

The food is always invariably delicious at Chutney Masala. They especially shine with their tandoor items like the grilled meats, naans. However, their service always makes me question why we keep returning. Case in point, we were here yesterday for Mother's Day lunch with our young children, and not a single person from the host to any of the waiters who stopped by the table ever wished me a happy Mother's Day. It just was so stark in my mind given how any other establishment we've been to always at least wishes you, most even offer a flower or a treat. Also, this happens every time we've dined here, we were rushed and a plate I was still enjoying my Samosa on was snatched away. The restaurant was half empty and then our Mains took a while to arrive, so it wasn't clear what the rush was to stop us from finishing our course. Lovely presentation. Food was very good, will definitely go back and recommend. The margarita was not spicy, it was perfect and had a nice kick. They warn you the Lamb Vindaloo is spicy but my friend who eats some spice didn't find it spicy and I eat a lot of spice and it was not spicy for me. If they scare you, and you can handle some spice, you can handle it. It was very tasty. We had the lunch special which was a very good deal. I hope to go back and try the rasmali, but I didn't have any room left , the lunch was very filling ! read more

We were given a gift card to try this place and have been back many times since because we were just wowed by both the service and food. Some of the best Indian food I've had. The spices are obviously fresh ground and not packaged (this isn't true many fine places). Even the table condiments. The goat stew was best I've ever had. Not a huge menu and some dishes are better than others, but we travel half an hour to come and will continue to do so. Lovely inside too. But outside tables are available and Irvingtons Main St is very quiet on summer weekends at least. read more

And the place needs more attention to decor. Framed old Indian photos & mirrors are nice but there is a distinct lack of color, which is odd for a restaurant which represents such a colorful country as I dia. Unfortunately, after much anticipation, I found Chutney Masala to be an entirely underwhelming experience, though certainly not unpleasant. On a hot Tuesday my dinner partner and I were among several six o'clock parties. Seated quickly and allowed to take in the space's wall of Indian motifs and photographs. Staff were all very welcoming, and our waiter was efficient and good-natured. Picking at the complimentary papadum crisps, our avocado paapdi chaat appetizer was an alright start. Mixing what tasted like raita yogurt sauce and a dark tamarind saice, mixed over cool avocado, chickpeas, and potato. It felt a bit like a hodgepodge of arbitrary flavors, the avocado particularly odd, but not bad. My dinner partner went for the vegetarian biryani, which was described as "bland" and unfulfilling. My experience with biryani echoes this; a more or less a gargantuan serving of rice. Sadly I'd say my malai kofta were a miss. Dumplings of cheese and potato, they were terribly dry and bathed in a thin sauce of middling aromas. To be frank, the rice at Chutney Masala was what disappointed me most. So crucial to curries, the rice was bland and without flavor. Good rice could be eaten untouched by other food and be a satisfying experience, but this was not. The peshawari naan of nuts and coconut had a nice reddish appearance, but was thin, without much filling, and unsatisfying. The cost of much of this, excusable if the food were terrific, was more than a bit high. The biryani, a large plate of rice with vegetables, was nearly $20 while my meager bowl of kofta a few dollars less. Even the naan was nearly $8! Quite disappointing, where there is better, more plentiful, and inexpensive Indian cuisine to be found elsewhere. read more
