Had the lunch buffet at this friendly, clean restaurant. The dishes were the standard fare and tasty but not as extensive in offerings as other restaurants. Not a fan of bones left in meat, especially lamb. Also, the rice was crunchy from over use of star anise, cloves, and black onion. All in all it was a very pleasant meal with enough variety. I waited for my second time eating here to review it as the first time was not that great. Sadly the second time was a repeat of the first. On the good side the service is friendly, restaurant clean and plenty of the typical options on the menu for those familiar with Indian food. On the other side of things the food is simply not on par with 9 or 10 other Indian restaurants I have ate at in the last 12 months across the country (including two in Portland). Simply put you can do much better. The chicken tikka masala was loaded with diced onion and red peppers and in the serving size I would prefer those emitted for more sauce. While the mixed grills dark meat chicken looked way overcooked, almost deep fried looking, and not fresh from a tandoor. The chicken chunks were perfectly cooked however and very good. And I might be nitpicking here but I do love it when the restaurant serves up some papadum upon being seated but sadly this place does not partake in that. It also has some desserts, curry, chicken dish, and basmati, and some other items, but I dont remember. Me and my bf went in for dinner, service was quick, we ordered naan for an appetizer but we had it come out with put entrees. I had something with bits of cheese in it and it came with a side of Basmati rice or naan. Ha ha All that said, this place has the best Indian food $9.95 lunch buffet in the Couve. Yes the chicken was a little over cooked and the naan bread was a little mushy because it is under a plastic cover but the goat was delicious. Basmati rice was good. Pretty enjoyable and tasty. Tasteless Chicken Tikka Masala had more bell peppers than chicken (also, why peppers?!). Tasted like tomato soup. Before coming to eat lunch buffet at Chutneys. I had phoned around to various other indian buffets. And most did not offer to many vegan options. But from what i was told over the phone Chutney's offered more then 2 vegan items on the buffet. Well their were only 3 and 2 of them were over cooked. One was okra with onions and bell peppers too over cooked and dry, the other was green peas with some thing like plaintaine or carrots. Too over cooked . the other vegan selection was a lentil soup which was good. Other than thst their was cucumbers, and a spicy sour chutney as well a a tomatoe chutney. And white rice. One of the worst experiences we had. We wanted to grab some comfort food after a long sightseeing day and we were truly disappointed with the food here. We ordered 1. Chole bature - this was the only thing that's was mediocre compared to everything else we ordered 2. Bindi masala - salt less, undercooked and tasteless 3. Paneer tikka masala - saturated with color and really sweet. I ate with my hands and had to wash my hands multiple times to get the color off my fingers. 4. Vegetable biryani - tasteless rice with defrosted undercooked vegetables 5. Chili paneer - there was nothing chili in this. Seems like they cooked the paneer in sweet and sour sauce 6. Chili chicken - has anyone ever eaten sweet chicken? This should be named sweet chicken instead of chili chicken 7. Samosa - undercooked again! I am not sure how this restaurant has 4 star reviews, but the food was horrible. The only bright side is that none of us fell sick after this. Last night I had the best meal I've had in over ten years, easily the best I've had since I moved to the State of Washington from the Washington DC area. I ate probably five times the amount I normally eat because I didn't know when I'd be able to get back here to Vancouver to savor this level of perfection and deliciousness again. I ate the Sahi Paneer, Veg Biryani, Veg Samosas, Dal Makhani, Garlic Naan, and Gulab Jamin and all but licked the plate clean. It was heavenly and I now know it's worth the four hours it would take to get here from where I live to experience the symphony of flavors all over again. If you live closer you should definitely avail yourself of the delicious delights to be had here. The owner was gracious and wonderful and even shared some wonderful conversation about his sports team in India and later played some great music for our party to enjoy as we talked late into the evening, all stuffed beyond belief from the royal spread he provided. As we left I asked to give him a hug. I felt I owed this man more than money for my meal. Whatever magic happens in his kItchen, I was moved deeply by his generously considered ingredients that combine to make more than a meal, they make an experience to be had by any appreciator of fine cuisine. read more

My gluten free and dairy free kids enjoyed the chicken curry that the helpful server here recommended, but I was underwhelmed by my Malai Kofta. $12 and it was mostly sauce, with two and a half tiny veggie balls about the size of the pad of my thumb (and I'm a woman and don't have large thumbs). I used to frequently get Malai Kofta in the Bay Area and remember always getting a much more generous serving of veggie balls. There was not enough rice, so my kids ate only about half of their curry before they ran out of rice. And our server didn't bring my naan. So I couldn't eat 9/10 of my meal, since it was almost all sauce and I had no rice or naan to eat with it. I was hungry when I left, unprecedented for an Indian restaurant. I went with my mom and sister to celebrate mom's 90th birthday and got there early on a weeknight evening around 6 pm. We were the first people in for dinner that night and were greeted by the only waitress that we ever saw that night. Her service and suggestions were wonderful as was the food. Chutneys serves the traditional style of Indian food; naan, lamb saag, butter chicken, tikka masala, basmati rice, samosas, etc and all very tasty. The sauces were especially delicious (fat is flavor) and of course don't forget a 20 oz Kingfisher beer to wash it all down. As our evening continued, I can understand better some of the complaints from other reviewers here, there was just one waitress for a growing number of diners. The service understandably slowed with each new table and even the best food is hurt by overworked servers, or as in this case, server. The restaurant seemed to be renovating a new room adjacent to the main room, this diner hopes that the management decides to hire an extra server or two when it opens. Great food, just come early or on an off night. UPDATE - Upon another recent, delicious visit to Chutney's, I can now report that the extra dining area I thought might be coming in the large room adjacent to the main restaurant area, is now actually a nice sized India products store. If you like real Indian spices and foods, you'll want to take a look in Chutney's new in-restaurant store. Oh, and the food is still good every time I go. More samosas please. read more

I just got done reading the book, "A Fine Balance" by Rohinton Mistry which is set in Mumbai, India. I was in the mood for Indian food. Chutneys is close by so we decided to try it. I loved, loved the lentil crepes (uthappam). The crepes were incredible. You pull pieces off and dip them in chutneys. Oh my gosh they were delicious. I just wanted to keep eating more, but we ordered them as an appetizer. Next time, I will definitely get an order just for myself. We also had the tandoori chicken and roasted eggplant with peanut-sesame sauce (baingan bahar). Both were very good and had the right amount of spice for us. The basmati rice was great for soaking up the extra sauce from the eggplant dish. The atmosphere and decor of the restaurant was nice. The staff was very friendly and attentive. read more

This place exceeded our expectations! Absolutely amazing food! We are vegan and their selection was great! When we walked in we immediately noticed how amazing it smelled. An adorably quaint restaurant with good vibes. We were treated like honored guests which was quite surprising. Pretty sure the owners were waiting us, making sure everything was perfect. So normally I've gone here in the past and had great experiences. It seems they are understaffed these days, however. I called ahead for take out and even gave them extra time to be sure they were ready. I ended up waiting for FORTY FIVE minutes in the tiny little waiting area (that's after the initial wait for when they said it would be ready to pick up). There were about eight of us, all crammed in dangerously close, waiting for the waitress to even acknowledge our existence. I was so aggravated by the lack of communication and thoughtfulness as I and my fellow patrons waited and waited and waited, that I was going to give them five minutes and just leave without my food. I NEVER do that. But I was THAT frustrated. I get being understaffed and how busy Saturday nights can be. That's not what's frustrating. Here's how they could fix things: Be honest. If it's going to take a while, say so when I place my order. Acknowledge people when they come in. It took a full 10+ minutes for her to even make eye contact with me. Then all she did was take my name and say nothing the rest of the time. I had no idea how much longer it would be, how behind they were, nothing. Figure out your waiting area. It's ridiculous to have that many people crammed so close together, even if there wasn't a pandemic. I need my personal space and I absolutely did not get it. None of us did. I don't even stand that close to freaking family members. If you're behind, for gosh sake, communicate! All I needed was a little communication. Just say, "Hey, looks like there's six people in front of you and we're short staffed. The wait will be at least another thirty to forty minutes, etc." And then I could have gone to the comfort of my car at least! They could even take down your phone number and call you to let you know it's ready or something. But the not knowing how long it would be, the complete lack of acknowledgement and communication, made the process infinitely worse than it had to be. It would be so easy to improve this problem. Just call me when it's ready. Bam. I'm sure they didn't enjoy the small horde of glares they were getting the whole time either. It would simply make everything work for everyone. That said, if you're ok with waiting an eternity for your food, it is VERY, VERY good. If they fixed that one little problem, this place would absolutely get 5 stars. read more

I want to say this is a good place. But who has to wait for an hour for a takeout order, did they have to kill the chicken I ordered? I was in Portland when I ordered it takes 26 minutes to get to them from where I was at. When I pulled up my notifications informed me my food wouldn't be ready for another 25-30 minutes. Let me start off by saying I am well aware that the pandemic has placed many business owners in a difficult position and I have a deep understanding and appreciation for th struggle as I am also a small business owner. Having said that, let the games begin. First and foremost, I was a guest in the date of WA visiting family for the first time since the beginning f of the pandemic, we are an a Indian family and hence appreciate supporting Indian establishments as much as possible, and we also like to eat. We originate from the Chicagoland area and for those who are not familiar with Chicago the diversity, richness of culture, and food runs deep. Although I enjoyed my overall experience in WA, Chutney's was the lowest point of my trip. We had called in prior to our arrival since many eateries were still not seating to capacity and we had a group of 9 we were told to come on in. Upon our arrival, it was apparent the restaurant was busy, understandable it was a a Friday evening, however our table was not set up. The floor manager proceeded to ask my husband to help her pull together tables for our party. It seemed an odd request, but he politely obliged. It went downhill from there it took 15 minutes for us to get water to drink. And every time we tried to get our server's attention we were ignored and the "non Indian" guests were attended to instead. At the end of the evening when I asked for a discount for poor service I was met with astonishment and the manager proceeded to say "you wouldn't do this at an American restaurant" I have no words to describe the fire that ran through my veins when she said this. A word of advice my fellow Indian entrepreneurs if you want to be treated the way an 'American' restaurant is treated than act like an American restaurant and serve all of your guests with equal respect and dignity. I have never gone to an American restaurant had a poor service experience and not received some kind of concession. Learning how to serve is an art I suggest you get some lessons read more
