Deeeeelightful Tex Mex food! We first went to the Chuys in Springfield Mall and realized there was one about 10 minutes away from us in Fairfax. Go figure! It's located where Chili's use to be off of Lee Highway right before Walmart and Big Lots. A lot of parking though, which is great. This place does get pretty busy. I've gone all different times here and it gets busy around 630/7 on a weekend. Everyone here is friendly. On one side of the restaurant is the bar area and the other is family dining. I heard HH is pretty good here too but haven't had the chance to go yet. They have a nacho bar with a variety of salsas, queso and warm chips for free I believe. I will have to say you must try the creamy jalapeño dip here, just ask for it when they give you your chips and salsa. You will be hooked and will put that ish on everything. I actually ask for some small to go cups and pour that sauce in there. Crack sauce. They make tortillas fresh here, you can watch them make it through the window! I also love how the chips are always warm. The best kind of chips. And the salsa is always fresh and cold. -Burritos are huge and they are filled with a lot of meat, veggies, rice and beans. It's a bit bigger than a chipotle size burrito. Can barely eat half of it! My favorite is the steak burrito. -Elvis Platter is a good choice if you want to try a little bit of everything. Three different types of enchiladas, beef taco, Mexican rice and queso on the side. Yum! The taco is my favorite, the beef is flavorful. The different sauces on all 3 enchilada are fun and I love that they are all different but compliment each other. -Chicken Tortilla Soup, not a fan of. The soup is too runny for my liking, I wish the consistency was a bit thicker. Also all the cheese is on the bottom so unless you know that you're going to be like why the hell is there so much cheese on the bottom. -Fajitas are delicious. Steak and chicken is the best of both worlds. The soft flour tortillas stuffed with steak, rice, beans and sour cream. Always flavorful steak and chicken. -As far as drinks go, I've only tried the margaritas which are only $6 bucks! Good amount of alcohol for both the frozen and on the rocks drinks. Yum! As for service, they are really awesome here and accommodating, especially when I ask for more creamy jalapeño sauce every 15 minutes. Thrilled to have a Chuy's nearby! It was a favorite during my years down south, and this area is ripe for some new offerings in American-Mexican cuisine. We dined on a Saturday evening, arriving with our kiddo early at 5 p.m. and finding a nearly full restaurant already. A good sign! Chips and their unique chunky and creamy salsa hit our table quickly and we dove in. Husband enjoyed a nice mojito. No draft beer on tap - just bottles. We skipped appetizers and headed right toward entrees. I had combo #2 - the Elvis Presley Memorial Combo w/ an enchilada trio (cheese, beef, chicken), a beef taco, rice and beans ($13) -- a huge plate I gladly shared! Husband had a trio of beef tacos w/ rice and beans ($10). He got the green chile rice in lieu of traditional Mexican rice, along with charro beans. Our kiddo has a great meal - 2 cheese quesadillas w/ rice and beans (ask for this in lieu of fries), plus a milk ($5). Service was fast, friendly and attentive. It's a casual place and certainly family-friendly. Advice: try not to be seated in the little room straight ahead of the front door. There's not much of a block to the cold air coming in, so we were a bit chilly at the start, until the heat kicked in. The place was packed when we left at 6 p.m., with lots waiting for a table. My only knowledge of Chuys before it opened in Fairfax was as the restaurant in Austin that busted one of the Bush Twins for drinking underage back when their dad was in the White House. We went the first night it opened and were really surprised at how good it was--especially considering nearly all the entrees were under $12. First off, everything tastes fresh--from the salsa and queso right through to dessert. I had one of the combos (the one with three enchiladas) which were all excellent. You can add any one of eight additional sauces--I added the Hatch sauce which was very fresh and had a nice complexity to it. My wife tried the Flautas which were superb--and for me Flautas have to be really good to avoid tasting like something in the frozen food section of Costco. We each had the "Texas Martini" which is just a shaker with ice, fresh lime juice, your choice of orange liqueur and your choice of tequila--in other words how Margaritas should nearly always be served. For anyone who has ever gotten the Margarita Shakers at "Border Grill" you get the idea. Our waiter had come up from Midlothian to help open the store and he was knowledgable, friendly and made excellent suggestions. My big problem with some of the Tex-Mex or Salvadoran-Mex places in the area is that every time I turn around, the prices go up to something really unreasonable for what you get. I will still swing by Guapo's on occasion for a Lomo Saltado (now north of $20), but for Tex-Mex there is no reason to ever set foot in Guapo's or Uncle Julios again. This place is a solid 3.5 stars, but, because Yelp only allows for full star ratings, I give this place a three, only because they ran out of chips and our waitress was forgetful--nice, but forgetful. We visited at the very beginning of happy hour and sat in the restaurant. It was not too busy and the decor was really cool--a throwback to the 50s with art, vinyl booths, etc. Happy hour features a free nacho bar, which is set up in the trunk of an old car in the bar area--you need to see it to believe it! The nacho bar had queso, salsa, chips, ground beef, and refried beans--not too shabby as this is free! Drinks were decent--not strong, yet not watered down. The food was pretty good, especially considering the other Mexican options in the area, which are more like an overpriced taco bell. The only reason I could not give Chuy's five stars was because of their unusual practice of setting the table with utensils in a sealed bag that says, "This silverware has been SANITIZED for your protection" (see photo). Although it is very nice to know that they sanitize their utensils, it immediately puts the thought in your head of dirty utensils and wondering why they are the only restaurant to have utensils in germophobe-friendly baggies. I started wondering whether something had happened. ANd then when they brought out the dishes, I kept wondering why those weren't in sealed bags too. Had they been sanitized? I'm just being silly, but frankly it was quite unusual. The food was totally a 5 though, I loved what I ordered. I feel like the true test of Mexican food is sampling the fish tacos - they're mediocre at most places, so when you find a place that makes yummy fish tacos, you know to stay loyal to them. And Chuy's has yummy Baja Tacos. My friend ordered the chile relleno, and he said it was amazingly delicious. And the portion size was very generous. You will not go hungry if you eat at Chuy's, especially if you gorge on chips and salsa at the beginning of the meal. For dessert we tried the house-made flan. I would totally get it again. Not too crazy hard and crunchy where your teeth get sore but perfectly light crispy and slightly salted to dip in their white sauce and/or salsa! With an egg allergy, I'm weary of creamy sauces so rest assured my egg allergy folks, this one is good to go! Still trying all their sauces but you guys!!! Their tortillas are ssssoooo good! Since this place opened a while ago, I have been meaning to come here for a meal. I finally had a chance today. My wife and I tried to do lunch dates over other Friday, and I finally convinced her to eat here. First, I really enjoyed the decor and atmosphere. It is fun, the colors of the walls are pink or some other light pastel color. The employees are incredibly friendly, greeting us as we came in. Second, the menu is huge! So many things to choose from! I ran into a little bit of analysis paralysis with this menu, but that is a good thing. I rather have a lot to choose from instead of very little. Third, the table comes with free homemade tortilla chips and homemade salsa. They are both delicious! The salsa is slightly spicy and is made with fresh tomatoes, onions, jalapenos, and lime. It is a tangy flavor and incredibly refreshing to eat. the chips were thin and crispy, and warm if they had just taken it out of the fryer. Together, heaven. Our server ensured that the bowl of salsa is never empty for too long and the chips kept coming. I loved this because some places do not take care of their customers this way. Ultimately, I chose the Elvis Combo Plate for my meal, which includes a taco, several enchiladas, and a cheese dipped taco shell. I enjoyed it all! My only complaint would be that I wish the ground beef in my taco was a bit more flavorful, but I am not nitpicking. It was still a delicious taco. The enchiladas were great. This is a Tex Mex restaurant, and it is not ashamed of it. If you are looking for authentic mexican, this is not it. However, Tex Mex is another category of food that is amazingly done here. Had an early dinner Friday night and got in just before the big crowd showed up. This place is popular. The waitress was very pleasant but we had to wait much longer for our food than an adjacent table of two that came in 10 minutes after we did. We really liked the chips and salsa. The drinks were flavorful though with little or no alcohol. I had the enchilada and taco combination plate. My wife had a lite taco plate. My enchilada was quite good, the refried beans were pretty good but the Mexican rice was dry and lumpy. The taco was terrible. The shell was stale and chewy, not crisp at all, and the filling was plain ground beef with no garnishes. I've had much better tacos at Taco Bell. My wife's taco was much better so I must have gotten an old shell. We shared the sopaipillas. They were pretty good - a little on the undercooked side but nice with the honey. All in all, it was an uneven experience. Maybe we will try them again in a few months to see if they can bring some consistency to the service and food. read more

In the location that was formally Chili's comes Chuy's. This is a chain that started in Austin Texas and has grown across the Southeast. James & I stopped in on Friday evening around 745p and it was quite busy and were promptly seated. Their menu is massive but I settled on the Tortilla Soup & James had one of the enchiliadas. The soup was really tasty and flavorful, seasoned just right and nice chucks of delicious chicken. It would have been better with more chicken and less broth though. read more

Came here for dinner with my boyfriend. We got there about 50 min before closing thinking we'd quickly order, eat fast and leave. Was told the wait for a table would be about 10-15 min but we can sit at the bar. The bar had 3 parties so we opted for a table at the bar cuz we figured it'll be quicker. Boy were we wrong!! The bartender made eye contact then proceeded to ignore us and walk by us several times without asking for our drink order. A lady brought us the chips (busser I think?) and informed us that the bartender will take our order. So we waited. And waited. The host/mgr (?) ended up asking if we've been helped and took our drink order. Please note that the bar wasn't busy with making beverages - and the host/mgr had to remind the bartender to MAKE OUR DRINKS after about a few min (the busser who brought us the chips actually looked over and gestured if we've been helped and flagged him down). We waited again for someone to take our food order. By now, I am frustrated and hungry - it's been over 20 mins where the bartender has ignored us and actually was chitchatting with a couple that came in after us and sat at the bar (she served them drinks right away!). Finally I asked if she was going to help us as we've been waiting for over 20 mins. She informed us that she "wasn't a waitress, doesn't know where the waitress is but can take our order". The kicker is...she was still a bartender, but she never even took our drink order! She ended up getting my order wrong but by the time the food came out I was starving and so incredibly frustrated that I was almost in tears. The host/mgr apologized profusely for the service and while I completely understand things can happen, he did nothing wrong and tried to help. The bartender ignored us for over 20 mins while still serving the other 2 tables in the bar area. I don't know if she was having a bad day or what, but it didn't look or sound like she was as she was chatting it up with other people but ignoring us completely. I came here because I was craving Mexican and it was a satisfying visit! Their chips are good, but a bit too salty sometimes. Their salsa was okay. We ordered the Deluxe Quesadilla, which included chicken. I liked it, it came with four little quesadillas and it was tasty enough. I order the Chicka-Chicka boom boom enchilada and it was very good. Ever since Chuy's had opened up near my area my bf won't stop talking about how great it was when he had it back in Texas. So one night, my bf and I decided that we'll give it and go and try it. We were seated right away and were given our tortilla chips with a salsa dip and one which I had to find out on my own, was the creamy jalapeno (my favorite out of the two). The bf ordered chicken tacos I believe and I ordered the chiles rellenos with the stuff ground beef (should've gotten the one with cheese). My bf said that his meal was good, but a bit bland. I thought my meal was good as well, but I wouldn't order the chilies rellenos again... Might just stick to what I know and like which is quesadillas :P In regards to service, it was alright our server was just present but that was about it. This is my favorite mexican restaurant in the area. The creamy jalapeno dip is a must have for chips (or anything really) every time. I love their style of chip, thin and super crunchy. We used to frequent a CHUY'S in Louisville, KY so I was a little disappointed that the menu didn't have the specific items that we wanted. Overall, the food was OKAY, but not as good as the other CHUY'S - needs more seasoning. My husband got the ELVIS COMBO plate and though the food looked great, the 3 different burritos/enchilada(?) all tasted the same. Service was a little disorganized and servers had poor communication between each other. We got our food in a timely manner though and our server was pleasant. This place just opened up down the street not too long ago so we decided to give it a try since every time I drove by here, it was completely packed. Upon entering I immediately notice the vibrant colors decor all over the place with tex mex and Elvis references scaling the walls! The host stand waiting area was a little tiny to accommodate all the guests so there was several times where I had to get out of people's way for them to get by, a little cluttered. However, this place used to be a Chili's so this was probably the best they could work with as far as the spacing in the restaurant went. As for the food, I was looking for something better than what I normally get from places like Uncle Julio's and that is exactly what I got. Huge platters, tons of sauces, homemade tortillas. I opted for the #1 platter which came with enchiladas, tacos, some fried chips dipped in cheese, rice and beans. I wish we didn't order the appetizer sampler plate because between the chips and dinner entrees, I was too stuffed. I had no problems with the flavors of anything, its just, I felt like there were too many sauces on my plate in the end that kind of just meshed together. Cheese, hot sauce, more cheese, some white jalapeno sauce, enchilada sauce...although it was tasty, there was so much going on with my plate, it kind of just turned into glob halfway through my dining. Nevertheless, it was tasty tex mex, something new, so I did not mind it at all. I'd definitely like to come back here for the happy hour with cheeps drinks and endless chip and salsa bar with access to all the sauces of your picking because having dipping options is something I'm a sucker for! Always consistent and that was just what we were looking for. We started with La Pina Colada. Cool and refreshing, perfect after a long hot day. My man got the Chuyachanga. Filled with oven roasted chicken, cheese, cilantro, green chilies, garnished with sour cream. He loves the creamy Jalapeño sauce, so this topped his dish. It was golden perfection. But truthfully that creamy jalapeño sauce makes everything better! He said that this is now his new favorite! I got my usual, the BAJA fried fish tacos on corn tortillas. It is served with cilantro, red cabbage and creamy jalapeño sauce. I, of course, added extra creamy jalapeño sauce. It is always crunchy, creamy perfection. The reason for the 4/5 stars is she messed up my tacos and served me flour tortillas. That caused me some tummy distress. And we ended up with both water glasses empty. my second trip to this Chuy's location in Fairfax and another enjoyable one. We were seated quickly and placed out of the way (my wife has a broken foot so we were trying to keep away form other - and not because of covid this time). Our server Evelyn was personable, friendly, and quick with menus and refilling water. The food was excellent as well (beef fajitas for me, chicken enchilada for my wife). The only downside was the lack of mint for the ordered mojito so I passed. My wife had a really good happy hour margarita however and enjoyed it. read more

During the downward trend of the COVID pandemic, me and my S/O decided to have dinner outside at Chuy's. We thought this was a pretty low-risk activity, especially since we were the only ones there at the time. After about 10 minutes of waiting around, the server comes out not wearing his mask. He offers to wear it fully but only for our table. He asked each table he had if they were okay if he did not wear the mask. I guess he didn't understand the concept of contact exposure between two parties and him being the middle man. These acts were inappropriate especially in a restaurant setting where you serve people fresh food, usually with your hands. If this waiter is using his mask with us and then taking it off when he walks away, he is creating a false narrative that he is being safe and cautious about spreading a disease. Unfortunately he did not care enough about his customers to just keep his mask on the entire time. Just because you get tired and want to take your mask off in public does not mean you should, especially when you are touching someone else's dinner. If he were to go to another table with an asymptomatic COVID positive individual sitting there, he could potentially spread the germs to our table, just because the other table said it was okay that he didn't wear a mask. The Margarita I ordered tasted like it had no alcohol in it. 4 other customers at the bar said the same thing. Complained to bartender, she responded "Yea I've been getting that a lot tonight". I was then told there was enough in there (Not even close), and I could order another one if I wanted. Bartender was also mocking other guests who complained and was being combative. As soon as I read nacho car in the Washingtonian article for Chuy's opening, I was more than happy to check out the place. Met up for HH there on a Friday night and I heard that the wait could be an hour or so. My friend got there early and found seats at the bar which was only about 15 minute wait. Happy Hour is from 4-7 which only included drinks like margarita etc. Wish they extended that to the food since I don't drink. So many loves: nacho car, refried beans, jalapeno ranch dip and veggie combo dish which included more refried beans, cheese chile relleno, and veggie enchilada. All very very delish and the plate came out hot and huge. Both my friend and I shared the dish and we were completely stuffed and of course endless nachos were a big help too. Also, if there was a wait for the nacho car, you can always order nachos at the bar plus the dips to avoid the wait. A definite big fan of Tex Mex and will come back again. read more

Chuy's is a good dining option in the virtual food desert of Fairfax and please notice I said, "good" and not great. It is a great replacement for the long in need of retirement, Chili's that was formerly on this spot. I have visited Chuy's twice now for lunch. Both times I was greeted almost immediately and seated very quickly but make no mistake, this place is hopping at lunch time. My servers were both efficient and helpful in making selections. The complimentary chips and salsa are really delicious -- definitely above par. I love the eclectic decorations and the nod [understatement] to Elvis is definitely a nice and quirky touch. So, the food, admittedly, I am not a Tex Mex fan; however, they do offer some light fare options and a la carte tacos which is the direction I usually take. My dining companions ordered fajitas and burritos and were all well satisfied with their choices though the serving sizes are GINORMOUS! The margaritas and mojitos, I'm happy to report are also delicious. This is definitely a family friendly joint so don't hesitate to bring the whole fam. Came here for a weekday lunch with my boss and co-worker. Service was ok. I had to ask twice for silverware. I ordered a chicken salad with a chipotle style chicken on top, delish. I substituted cucumbers instead of avocado. I asked for the cilantro salad dressing on the side and it was delivered with dressing poured on top of the salad, dressing was not tasty, just tasted like a cream based dressing with a little vinegar and seasonings. The fresh tortilla chips are yummy. We ordered the queso dip and I could not get enough of that!! I plan to return for dinner soon. read more

Updating an earlier review. I have not been here in a few years now, but one of the last times I went, I got definite food poisoning about an hour after eating here. We convinced ourselves for a bit that we liked this place, but ultimately got tired of the schtick and crowds. Plus explosive d*******a is no fun. Go somewhere else for Mexican. read more
