This is basically bad airplane food, if you want Mexican you're better off at Taco Bell down the street

I must be the only person in town who doesn't like this place. Unless you like sugary pre-made frozen margaritas, then you may have trouble finding a drink. Very limited bottled beers, no draft beer, not much for mixers and the food.....Ok--- It tastes amazing but I have tried three different times and each time I get ill. Chuy's is strangely addicting. The hosting staff stands around confused but the food is very good and different. Every server I've had is very sweet thus far. Today's experience was a bit bizarre. In order to properly explain it, I'm going to post the email I sent to the company. "Let me begin by saying that our server, Bryan (I believe that was his name), was a total sweetheart We've been to the Short Pump location many times since it opened, and it's always been delicious. Small issues with staff, but it's brand new, so we understand. We've realized since the first time there that we need to specify certain things that the food comes with, as the cooks have clearly still not learned the menu. More specifically, we always specify that the quesadillas come with pico de gallo. Nothing big, it's just our preference and what it says on the menu. Today, July 26, 2013 at around 7:00 PM, I ordered the quesadillas, stressing the pico de gallo. It came without pico de gallo, but our server noticed it right away before putting it down, took it back and got the pico de gallo. I opened it to add the sour cream and pico de gallo, only to notice the first one didn't have any grilled onions or chiles. I then opened the rest of them and none of them have it. I wasn't upset at all, because, again, I know they're new and learning, that's fine. So when our server came back I let him know what was going on, handed him the menu to show to the kitchen staff, and thought that was that. But then the manager, Jay, came over. He held up the plate I had just sent back and, in the most rude tone I'm sure he could muster said, "What do you want?" Assuming he had already heard the situation, I replied that I simply wanted what I ordered. He said, "Well what is this?" To which I responded a quesadilla with cheese. And so he asked what I wanted in it. So I read verbatim from the menu what it was supposed to have inside, and when he asked again what I wanted, I stressed the onion and chile part. Mind you, I'm still being very polite, and laughing to alleviate his clear annoyance with me. He leaves without a bit of apology, and in a bit of a huff. I asked for it to be put in a box, as the rest of my party had already finished their meals at this point, which was no small feat as they ordered larger meals than mine. To put it into perspective, it has been at least 17 minutes now since the first time they gave me my food. Bryan comes back and tells me he's so sorry and they're working on it. Bryan's very sweet, and perhaps would be better than Jay in the manager position. A bit later my food arrives, in the box, I open it to check the quesadillas to see that there's no pico de gallo. This, again, is not a large problem, I just wanted a bit of it to go. So I asked Bryan if he could please get me a bit. Then Jay comes back and asks me again in his lovely rude voice "What do you want?" To which I reply pico de gallo. He then proceeds to tell me that it doesn't come with pico de gallo. At this point I've read the menu to him, so I'm awfully confused. So I pick the menu up, point to the pico de gallo and he says "Well it doesn't come inside it!" Which I knew, I had already told him I just wanted it on the side. He walks away, and comes back with an enormous container of pico de gallo, a clear sign that he doesn't want to have to come near me ever again. He plops it down on the table with a pointed look and walks away. I just want to stress again that not once does he apologize for the inconvenience, nor the fact that I didn't get a chance to eat my meal before the rest of my party did. Perhaps I should be more specific and say that he hasn't apologized at all for anything, and I'm beginning to wonder if he knows how to say he's sorry for anything. I'm sure by this point you're wondering the point of this hugely elaborate story. The manager, Jay, is the most atrociously rude and incompetent manager I have ever met. I work in the retail, I understand that it's hard when someone has a problem. But I have never not apologized for an issue, nor have I ever been rude even if someone was being rude to me. Which, I would also like to stress, I was nothing but sweet about the issues. Perhaps if I had shouted and been rude he would have been apologetic, I'm not honestly sure. Maybe he responds to people with the same awful attitude as himself. My question to you is, how on earth did this man get hired for any kind of job that deals with people and their problems? It's very clear, in any type of business, that any problems that need to be dealt with are dealt with by the manager. Though I know this has already been stated, I'm so unhappy at the moment that I feel the need to state it again, he is the absolute worst manager I've ever encountered and how you all managed to hire him is beyond me." After looking at photos on here and reading reviews, I was a little skeptical about going to Chuy's. These reviews and photos really do make the place look scary for my stomach; however, none of what is on here do Chuy's justice. If you are looking for Plaza Azteca, do not go to Chuy's. They are not the same, so just go to Plaza. Anyways, arrived at 5:30 PM on a Saturday night and was immediately seated. The chips and salsa were brought to the table. The chips were thin, crispy, and lightly salted. I actually prefer these chips to the thicker kind that many other Mexican restaurants place on the table. The salsa was okay. It was light pink and resembled pico more so than salsa, and I am thinking the pinkness of the salsa made it a little bitter since the tomatoes were probably not as ripe as they could have been. However, still enjoyable. I ordered a grilled chicken taco salad with jalapeño ranch dressing. Best taco salad I've ever had. No nutrition-less shredded iceberg lettuce, but instead the salad had greens with purple cabbage. It also had tomatoes and cheese on it as well as diced grilled chicken. I poured their jalapeño ranch dressing over it and it was delicious. I cannot even begin to describe how good the dressing is. It resembles ranch with a little kick. I also ordered a side of refried beans, which was a huge side, enough beans to kill someone. I ate what I could of them with my salad. They were just okay, typical refried beans. My boyfriend says their charro beans are much better. My only complaint with this restaurant is that I felt I was rushed. We got there, were served, and ate within 30 minutes. We were also still eating and the waiter asked to take our plates away after he saw me still eating my taco salad shell with my side of beans. I would've preferred the pace to be a lot slower than it was but the food was still good and fresh. read more

We came here once a few weeks ago and everything was fantastic, staff was friendly and welcoming, food was hot, spicy and we discovered they had sherbet push-up pops.....sherbet push-up pops! Our daughter loved it, sugar...of course she loved it, but my wife and i also purchased one as well. The second time we ate there last week was good but not as great as the first, staff was very sweet and attentive but definitely green. The food had great heat but lacked flavor for some reason. As an operator I know we can't hit it on all cylinders everyday so I completely understand, we will definitely keep coming back! read more

This place is very basic American Mexican food. My husband summed it up, El Torito! The staff was really nice but the service was slooooow! Both times! The food wasn't bad but not great either! The salsa & guacamole were the best part! Unfortunately the chips were sooo thin, they broke off in the guac:(. Very loud inside but fun decor for kids! read more

Just finished my dinner at Chuy's. This is about as good as Tex Mex gets here in VA. This is a chain that I love to eat at back home and I was really excited to see that Richmond has one of their own now!! If I had my choice I would be here every meal! 8 of us met there for dinner to celebrate two birthdays. We had a great meal and a great server named Amanda. After dinner 4 of us went into the bar area. We told our server Dawn that we were celebrating two birthdays and she insisted we do a shot. The bar was out of one of the ingredients for the shots we ordered so Dawn said she would order us something great. After the shot we ordered drinks and she told us we were cut off. No one in our group was anywhere near being over served. We questioned her again and she said it was her decision. WOW - we will never go back there!!!! read more

Our family and friends had a celebration luncheon at Chuy's today for the ODU graduation of our son. The management and staff were extraordinary from the planning of the event to the execution today. The staff took the sheet cake we brought with us the minute we walked in the door. We were promptly seated, The wait staff were attentive and cordial meeting our every need during the luncheon. This is a fun family-friendly place. I like the vegetable enchiladas and I especially like that I can choose my sauce. The food isn't too heavy and has a lot of flavor. They have free nachos during happy hour which is a major major plus for me. I love nachos. read more

Love the Chips, so light and crispy. I usually get fajitas, but last time I got the chicken quesadillas, and they were amazing. my new favorite :) Abigail was my server and she really took care of us. We just finished having lunch, but we're beyond grossed out seeing a fly in a mango margarita at our table. I had the beef fajita salad with creamy jalapeño dressing, the best I've ever had and I regularly order from Mexican Restaurants all around. Hubby had chicken tortilla soup was nice and filling. Service was OK; server wasn't too sure of the menu or its options. Order the Elvis Green Chile Fried Chicken; the rice didn't taste good and the beans were bland. The chicken was tender but chewy; felt like it was low quality. My other guest ordered the Chicken Flautas; they were your typical flautas but the chipotle sauce was more like a burrito sauce; it didn't pair right with the flautas; they also didn't like the rice and beans. The third guest had Chicka-Chicka Boom-Boom; he said they were ok nothing worth coming back to. The last guest had the kids cheese burger but it had no cheese and it lacked in flavor. Over all the food was below average while the service was average. Chuy's is not worth a second try as I don't see them improving the issues that we encounter. This is just what they serve and how they operate. With so many options available in the area it's worth going elsewhere. read more

We are regulars at Chuy's. We love the place and have recommended it a lot. The food is always hot and quickly served, the chips and salsa are quickly replenished if you want, drinks are on the table most of the time before we have had a chance to look at the menu. Service is almost always impeccable. We had one concern with the way a waitress was dressed, brought it to the attention of the manager who took our concern seriously. Here you get some really good food and atmosphere to boot! This place is always packed! The food is everything from their own spin on the usual Mexican favorites to their own tried and true recipes. The deserts are awesome! My wife and I have joined friends here many times and thoroughly enjoy ourselves. The wait staff is pleasant and have been all too willing to play along with gags and kid around. It can and will get a little loud at peak times. Don't miss out on the chips and dips selection served right out of the back of a 58(?) chevy trunk in the bar area during the evening. Cant beat it! They do dress up events for Elvis' birthday for gosh sake! The dessert to try is their own spin on Tres Leches. So give everyone in your party a spoon and prepare to enjoy! We took another road trip from Baltimore to Richmond for lunch at Chuy's! It was worth every mile and every bit of the traffic nightmare on I-95! We had the delicious and unique Elvis Chicken with Green Chili sauce platter. Ah, but first we enjoyed the salsas! The creamy jalapeno dip was addictive! As always the regular tomato salsa melted in our mouths! The platter's portions were generous and unlike most "Mexican" restaurants this far from Texas, no two things tasted alike. The Spanish rice was fabulous, that coming from one who normally skips it. I have no idea the secret behind the refried beans but they were wonderful. The service was superb too. The meal was topped off with "melt-in-your-mouth" sopapillas with honey and creme. Fabulous! Now, Byron was our waiter and he left us wanting for nothing. The service was great! Thank you! Yuk! I'm a native Texan and am embarrassed. Even if you have to tweak things for sissy Virginians.........please. The salsa was so bland that we asked for hot sauce and black pepper to make it believable. Service was so slow and awful, when our food FINALLY arrived, my enchiladas were actually tough. It was as though they put my plate under one of those heat lamps. Again, yuk. We were tempted to go outside to see if there were Golden Arches out front. It all began with the long wait for someone to bring us chips and (sissy) salsa; continuing with the long wait for our drinks; adding to the long wait for our food; not ending with our group not even having utensils for awhile. No wonder everything seem congealed. And the place was practically empty on a Friday night. That would never happen in Austin. We'll drive to Woodbridge and go to Uncle Julio's from now on for real Tex-Mex. Richmond just doesn't get it or deserve it. read more

Went on a Saturday night, 2 adults, 1 kid. We all got either hard or soft tacos and loved them. The portions are good enough to fill you up, and the prices are reasonable. The staff is friendly, and the restaurant was clean (including restrooms). I especially enjoyed the tortillas for the soft tacos. At some mex places, the rice is crispy and burned or it has a weird spice to it, but Chuy's was perfect. The kids meal also comes with a push pop which was cool, and the kids tortillas are half size which was kinda cute. Oh, we also got the guacamole which was outstanding. I can't exactly claim that this is the best Tex mex ever because most Tex mex is very similar. The difference at Chuy's was the little stuff. Example is that the silverware was in a sealed bag. I hate it when places roll it up in the napkin with the ends sticking out because that's gross. In fact, I typically fold my napkin inside out because of that. Light fixtures had no dust, floor was clean...stuff like that makes a difference for me when going out to eat. read more

the food was really good..but our server katie was very very rude and her attitude sucked! she forgot to bring my sweet tea and another server that passed by which was nice gave me my drink, and katie never asked how our food was. she avoided coming to our table the whole time...thats why i didn't want to leave a tip because she needs to fix her attitude, if your a server your suppose to be nice and kind, not rude and bitchy. our lovely server gave herself a $6 tip and how i noticed it was when i looked at my credit card statement...she probably thought i woudn't do that but guess what i did and i made sure the manager found out what she did and next time she needs to learn how to talk to people and maybe she will get tipped. read more
