My husband loves Chuy's after growing up on it in Texas. After it opened in Jacksonville, I knew that at some point he'd want to go and I'd be introduced to this popular Mexican eatery. We ended up there around 10pm on a Saturday night after watching a movie nearby. The good news for us was that the place was nearly empty with only three other tables dining. The bad news was that the place was filthy! I was shocked by how dirty the floor was. It looked as if we'd missed a tortilla chip stomping and food throwing contest. He normally gets huge plates of food such as the Combo #2, also known as the Elvis Presley Memorial Combo which comes with three types of enchiladas - beef/cheese/chicken tomatillo, a taco, and chili con queso dipped tostadas. But it was late and he wanted something lighter. I ordered what he ordered - Combo #3 the ground sirloin taco and cheese Tex-Mex enchilada combo. As we waited for our food, we had a few of the house tortilla chips which were thin and crispy. I didn't care for the salsa as the veggies were too finely chopped and it was too liquidy. I'd heard so much about the creamy jalapeño sauce from my husband but I was not impressed. It tasted like ranch dressing. He actually didn't care for it either as he commented that it was too thin and watery at this location. Our food came out quickly and it was clearly freshly made and very hot. After watching a lady making tortillas in front of us, I was excited to try them. They were very good that day and the next day when I ate the leftovers! They were so soft and fluffy. I'd opted for a soft shell for my taco and that was the right move. The tortillas were the best part of my meal. Well, that and the superbly melted cheese. Four stars for the food and the enthusiasm of the employees an hour before closing. Two stars for the cleanliness of the place. It was tough for me to enjoy my meal when my eyes were constantly being redirected at the mess around us. At a place like this, cleaning can't wait until closing time. read more

Although the atmosphere was great, the service was ok and the food was mediocre. I had the tacos carbon-1chicken and 1 steak. The chicken was good but the steak was tough and hard to chew. I had expected it to be more tender since it appeared to very red and undercooked. The waitress was nice but we received our food without silverware and she would forget to bring our drink refills and would ask if we needed anything after forgetting that she had asked us before and not bringing to us. The best part of our visit was probably our server Maddie. She was workin' hard checking in on all her tables. I saw her eyes constantly scanning her tables to see if guests needed anything. I saw her notice that we needed our chips refilled while she was attending to guests at the table next to us. She quickly stopped by to acknowledge it and asked if we needed anything else and was on her way. IMO, her service pushes up the star level (for my review, at least). Multi-tasking at its best. Anyway, the food was decent but nothing that really wowed us. I almost always order Chile Rellanos if it's on the menu. I'm not sure which is the "right" way to serve up a Chile Rellano but I know now dry-ish Chile Rellanos isn't my thing. Dirty and dated , too cold to sit in the restaurant ,the music was loud and inappropriate to the atmosphere of the restaurant. I asked to turn it down wait staff said it was broken and it only plays at one volume. The wait staff were dressed as if they were home lounging . Sloppy I had an eye shot into the kitchen employees leaning against counters where they prepare food and it was filthy. Food was put together cheap and sloppy, tasted bland. Handed me my receipt and I thought to myself that it looked cheap considering the items I ordered. It was missing my queso. She she rang it in separately. Got the order. Got home. This Texas lady finally mustered the courage to try the legendary ATx eatery here in Jax. Hubby and I went in for lunch and were pleasantly surprised no wait for a table. The flavors were as remembered, but there was a lot more taco beef in the tacos here in Jax! We both agreed the only real difference we could tell between ATx and Jax's Chuy's would the refried beans. TexMex refried beans are generally charro beans which have been puréed. Thank goodness Chuy's was smart enough to open in 2017 so that the hype would be gone by my birthday! I picked Chuy's for my birthday dinner with my family. We arrived after 6 p.m. and were seated promptly. We sat in the main dining area(at least I think it is) and it's pretty lively in there. Our server greeted our table with chips(which were fresh and warm) and two dips: salsa(which is spicy) and this jalapeno ranch-like dip(not spicy). We devoured all the chips because the ranch-like dip is delicious! I ordered a house grande margarita, and it's apart of the happy hour menu. For my entree, I got steak enchiladas with deluxe tomatillo sauce. It was sooooo good! I got a clean plate award. The dinner came with refried beans and mexican rice on the side. I guess the town center is the place where we choose to meet up with our not-so foodie friends, or maybe it's quickly becoming the place to eat. An old middle school/high school friend that I kept in contact with over the years was in town and wanted to meet up for dinner one night. We met up there just in time for happy hour but neither one of us partook in the specials, mainly because she's expecting and I decided to cut back. The salsa you can taste is freshly made but a little soupy for me. We both decided on the same entree which was their daily special, the Fat Daddy Enchiladas. Chicken enchiladas with spinach, mushrooms, onions, jack cheese inside corn tortillas with green chilies and rosado sauce. I asked if I could get double refried beans instead of rice and our server obliged. The plate looked delish when it came out but I was a little disappointed at the size of each enchilada. Holy guacamole! Now, I attended media night a few months back. I knew eventually I'd return to Chuy's. On Saturday night, it happened. And man, we were left in a comatose state after a solid meal on all fronts. I'd suggest not going to Chuy's during dinner on Saturday night (basically always do the opposite of what I do). We waited at least 35 minutes for our table, as the place was more packed than Disney World. Once we sat in a comfortable booth for five and our attentive server dropped chips and salsa on the table, we knew we were in good hands! Their house chips are absolutely addicting and they even taste good without dipping! Thin, crunchy, salty but not really substantial enough to hold up to the guac. Anyone else find it odd they add strips of lettuce to the guacamole?? Anywho, the salsa has a nice kick and the queso rocks. I ordered a House Marg on the rocks, and the server somehow persuaded me to upgrade to a grande size, aka an 18oz. Margarita. You know what? It was completely worth it and I have no regrets! Onto the main course... Chicka Chicka Boom Boom - signature enchiladas LOADED with shredded chicken, soaked in green chile sauce, and bursting with flavors. Served with fluffy rice and rich beans, I had a food baby after this meal. Chuy's 1000% gives you all the bang for your buck! Our waitress refilled our chips like it was her sole purpose in life. So let me tell you a little TC insider knowledge. Chuy's has FREE, as in F R E E build your own nachos cart...if you purchase an alcoholic drink in their bar area. I usually do 3 or 4 to offset my binging. Professional eater here. Chuy's style and ambience is simple: larger than life portions with down to earth southern tex-mex. I've never had a bad experience. Grant, I sat in the dining room once and the rest of my 50+ check ins has been at the bar. My review is for the bar. They's legit. My cup's never empty, and by cup I mean my gallon of margarita. It's cheap, refreshing and served with a side of Jax sass. I love it! I always get the chicken tortilla soup with a side of rice so I can make chicken rice soup. Tons of hot sauce and napkins. We finally made it to check out Chuy's! And unexpectedly ran into a friend who is a Texas transplant and has lamented the lack of good Mexican food in Jacksonville for years. She loves Chuy's because it reminds her of home. Chips and salsa are the standard starter. The chips are thin and super crispy. You will eat way too many. The salsa was too spicy for my liking but my husband enjoyed it. We started with the appetizer plate that had chicken flautas, nachos, quesadillas, and queso and per my friend's recommendation asked for some of the creamy jalapeño dip. The flautas were full of moist white meat chicken. The nachos were crispy and had good flavor. Same with the queso. The quesadilla used the homemade tortillas and it's definitely evident in how soft and fresh they tasted. Chuy's has a bunch of homemade sauces you can choose from. The creamy jalapeño was very good, had a spice that was a slow mild burn, not smack you in the face hot. I liked it a lot! We also tried the chimichanga and the combo #1. The chimi was fried and crispy but not overly tough. The rice and beans were a nice side, flavorful and not dry. The combo came with enchiladas, flautas, tostadas and crispy taco. Everything was seasoned well, the taco was crispy and tasty, and the enchiladas were filled with cheese and topped with a nice meat sauce. We ended with a half order of sopapillas. I was expecting a crispier tortilla but these reminded me of a cross between beignets and a funnel cake. Puffy dough, a little crispy but tender, and dusted with cinnamon and powdered sugar. We came in for a nice meal. Today is National Guacamole Day. Chuys had no specials with Guacamole. Should have gone to Cantino Laredo, they advertised specials for today. This is not why I am upset. It's the customer service we received from our waiter. I ordered the custom Enchilada, which I can choose what I wanted in it, and a specialty sauce with it. I asked the waiter why it was less expensive than the one that already comes with the boom boom sauce, which is a specialty sauce. Here is the real issue, he treated me like a child and pointed out that the boom sause is a 1.50 extra. Which is fine, but to stand there and point out on the menu and make me feel like an unheard child was not good customer service. I felt belittled. I would have gladly paid the upcharge, but not after being treated this way. The food was great! read more

I have a little secret about Chuy's that I learned at the Little Rock location! So, I came in prepared! Ready for it?? -- Your sauce choice can make or break the entire food experience! I learned that the hard way, but I've got it now and I'm pretty sure I'll eat ANYTHING topped with their jalapeño ranch (don't fear, it's not spicy) sauce! Chuy's is still brandy new and teeming with people so the service isn't up to par at this point, but they'll get there, hopefully! After getting fitted for a tuxedo, you apparently work up an appetite.  My Favorite Bearded Fiance asked me at the tux shop- Hey Baby, you wanna get tacos after this? He already knew the answer, but I think was looking for the smile and excited head shake!    We arrived at Chuy's and were told there would be about a 20 minute wait, which on a Saturday afternoon in the town center, I didn't think was too terrible. We got a blinky buzzy thing and I walked around to get pics of décor, there is just so much to see! There is also a booth where they make the home made tortillas and that seemed like to much fun to not go watch. Pretty soon the filled little waiting area had enough room for us to sit on a bench together and chat, so we did. I don't think it was the full 20 minute wait, and we were on our way to a table!   There is a LOT of things to look at here. There are pictures everywhere, there is a car in the back that I think has hot sauces in it, there's high top tables and low top tables and booths oh my! Our server came by quickly and dropped some salsa and chips off so we could munch and look over the menu. I pretty typically order the same things on a first visit to a taco place, but the choices and combinations weren't letting me. When the server came back, I asked if I was able to kind of customize a meal and she happily talked to me about what it was that I wanted to do. Before we down into that, I did order some guacamole, as I consider myself to be a connoisseur at this point..but moving on.  The issue that I was coming up against with my taco order is that I like to have a chicken, beef and fish or shrimp taco or just two of the three depending on how hungry I am. In the end, after talking it out, I went with a soft taco of ground beef, and a baja taco with grilled shrimp.  Stephen had three beef tacos, minus everything but the meat and the cheese, and also something called a stacked enchilada. He doesn't often go off the beaten path when it comes to food, so even with him asking to remove the sauce and the sour cream; I was proud he tried something different.   Our guac came to the table and I was really excited, until I saw it. It was a pretty standard, not spruced up rendition that I have seen many times before. I added some of the salsa, I stirred in some salt, but it just wouldn't come to life.  Luckily our food was not too far behind. I took some photos and we got down to it. The tacos were good, and had good flavor. I did really like the house made tortillas, although they seemed a bit fragile for all the fillings. The grilled shrimp taco had a sauce on it that I totally enjoyed. The rice and beans were uninspired, and as is the norm at many places, they really do just serve as a plate filler to round out a combo meal. Across the table from me, a whole different meal experience may have been happening. The stacked enchiladas, when stripped of the sauce and sour cream that may have made them perfectly delightful, were dry  and lacking any real oomph. He did say the tacos were good and filling.   I think over all, this wasn't a terrible lunch...it just wasn't that amazing of one either. No ones gonna die from one less than stellar food adventure; it just wasn't anything to sneeze home about. read more

I came here with my coworkers and both times had been very good. The 1st time was after a paintball event so we were starving and luckily this place was on the way back from the event. We were so lucky to arrive before the rush hour! There was about 10 of us so luckily they got us a table real quick. Then a large crowd of people started to come in so phew it was a close one. They have a variety of good food and drinks. Many of my coworkers ordered the cocktail drinks and it was during Happy Hour.Also happy hour on the chips and salsa/dip. Go for the jalapeños ranch dip (or they call it "crack sauce") because it's so good and addictive. I order the #6 Combination Menu which consisted of Enchilada, Taco & Chalupa: cheese Tex-Mex enchilada, ground sirloin taco & chicken chalupa, a corn tortilla fried and topped with refried beans, cheese, chicken, lettuce, tomatoes & jalapeños served with Mexican rice & refried beans. Yes! definitely a lot of food and for my taste buds, it was good. The second visit, I got the Comida Deluxe:cheese Tex-Mex enchiladas, chicken flautas, ground sirloin crispy taco, guacamole & homemade tostada chips dipped in chile con queso served with Mexican rice and refried beans. Again, a good amount food and delicious. Overall, I would recommend coming here with your buddies. I have been ordering Chuy's via DoorDash as I don't have a car this trip. I like Chuy's for the fact they keep it plain and simple and lay out exactly what you'll be getting on the app. I order the steak burrito with queso, and the first time I was worried about what was going to be inside the burrito. I don't like Pico or Guac in my burritos and I was relieved when I saw they came on the side in their own cups. One thing not on the menu when you order is a large bag of chips they give you aswell. It's a nice touch as you'd get chips if you went in and I'm glad they show they care with free chips on delivery as well. The steak is what keeps bringing me back. It's well seasoned and very tender each time. I do wish there was a option to have the rice and beans in the burrito instead of on the side but it's fine as is too. One of the best new restaurants in the St. John's Town Center's expansion project, Chuy's has been a welcome addition to our family's rotation. With a fun menu, vibrant atmosphere, and fresh tortillas made right in front of your face, it's easy to see why it's always busy. You of course get the standard chips and salsa upon being seated, but from there you can move on to a choice of eight other sauces to drown your nachos in. I personally like the Deluxe Tomatillo, and the Hatch Green Chile; but you can never go wrong with the Creamy Jalapeño. I've never gotten the same thing twice at Chuy's, and this trip was no different. Since it was a Sunday, I went with the weekend special Pork Boom-Boom Enchiladas. Two green chile-roasted pork stuffed tortillas, with cheese and boom-boom sauce smothered on top. It was fantastic, and should I come back on a Saturday or Sunday again, it might just be the first thing I repeat off the menu. As a side note, unlike me, my wife always gets the same thing when she goes, which is the Chile Rellenos. I'm not usually a fan of this dish, but I have to admit they do a great job with it here. Overall it's a nice contrast of Cantina Loredo for Mexican food at the Town Center. In comparison to Chuy's of Austin, TX, the decor is identical and the service is also the same; good but stretched super thin. I went early on a Sunday and waited about 40 minutes to be seated. I'd honestly never wait that long to eat somewhere unless I knew it was worth my time. It's Chuy's though and I miss my Tex mex so much. The chips and salsa are exactly what I remember. Chips are light, salty, and warm. The salsa is fresh and flavors are blended well even if a little too bland. Better than average but not amazing. I ordered the Comida Deluxe and A margarita with a Coronita inside of it (I asked for a Dos-A-Rita but I guess that's not something Chuy's offers in Florida). The enchiladas, chicken flautas, and taco all tasted absolutely average and the quality of the food tasted cheap. I left feeling kind of gross and a bit regretful. The food here reminds me of the Chuy's I used to love but it's just not the same quality or flavor. I can't believe I didn't write this one sooner! I'm so excited this place came to Jacksonville! I was invited to one of the soft opening nights and it was packed! We walked in to the coolest foyer ever with fish floating in the ceiling and bright, fun paintings everywhere. We were sat in the back, much quieter room, walking through a center room with palm trees staged throughout. The front bar room has photos of dogs submitted by people and the side room has a collection of hubcaps on the ceiling. This place is funky cool with a retro fiesta vibe! I loved the artwork on the walls - from Elvis to old Hollywood figures. The whole place is colorful and fun! Queso, salsa and guacamole were brought to the table. I loved the queso, but that's standard for me. My table mates ordered Enchiladas and the Appetizer Combo. I went for the "Big as Yo Face" Burrito with chicken topped with Ranchero sauce. IT. WAS. AMAZING! The chicken was really delicious and tender, shredded pieces stuffed in a bean and rice burrito. The tortilla was undoubtedly made moments before it was served to me, as there is a cute little room where you can watch them make 'em. For real. My table mate's appetizer combo plate looked like a great combo of nachos, flautas, and quesadilla. Looked amazing. There are a few combo plates to choose from and I think that may be the best option when first visiting. There are lots of things to choose from so these allow for lots of taste testing! Love that they make 6 different free dips, their own chips and tortilla's or they used to make tortilla's. I haven't seen the middle area lady running it in awhile. My favorite servers are Jason and Arianna. They pay attention, come by and ask, etc. I've had a few BAD servers there also. A pic of my now deceased dog (he was 17 when he passed) used to be near the flood lights in the bar but they took him down to repaint. I used to go by and see him every time I went. I miss him being there. I assumed they thought he was cute, too, so I got a great place! read more
