We ordered takeaway from here on Friday. They have a limited menu during this time but had exactly what we wanted. The burritos were wonderful. The salsa and creamy jalapeño were on point as usual. The best part of the takeaway was the margarita mix. They are currently selling 32oz for $5, we had the tequila at home but you can buy a bottle to go if you need one. Took me 15 minutes to arrive and texted them upon my arrival with my name and car spot #. Was texted back they were still working on my order but would be out soon. 35 minutes later and 2 more text messages from me informing them I was still there did no good. 4 cars had come and gone from the pick up car spots and I was still waiting. Decided to just go to Taco Cabana. Received a text message 5 hours later my salad was ready and to pay with the link they provided. Stopped in for lunch for the first time and it was a lot better than I expected as I've heard mixed reviews about this place. I ordered the cheese enchilada plate that comes with rice and beans and the food was flavorful and very good. I enjoyed the green salsa that comes with the chips you get when you first sit down although I don't recall what it's called I managed to swipe a couple tortillas from my friend that had ordered the beef fajita plate and I was happy to discover that they are not only fresh tortillas but they are made in house. Tonight I ordered curbside pickup chicka chicka boomboom with added avocado slices. This is what I received. I called the restaurant right away and asked to speak with a manager. I was not upset nor looking to get anything. I simply wanted to mention it to them to make sure the next customer didn't also get a rotten avocado. The manager asked me if the avocado was rotten or brown, I said it was more brown than green. He responded with "that's not rotten. It's how the avocados we are receiving are." ‍ I let him know that maybe they should start mentioning that to customers when they place their order. If someone had let me know the avocado would be brown aka rotten, I would have gladly passed on it. It is not excusable to serve paying customers rotten food and then patronize them. This Chuy's isn't any different than the others in town. The menu and food are consistent across the board. No surprises. We managed to get in just at the front of the Sunday lunch rush. By the time we left it was standing room only in the waiting area. Be advised, the waiting area is a patio outside, while it is shaded, it is VERY hot this time of year. I ordered the relleno and enchilada plate. I have always liked the rellenos here. They don't use the usual poblano pepper. I don't know what kind it is but it is very mild. This one came drowned in chili con carne that I thought was very tasty, I was expecting cheese or some other sauce. Unfortunately the Tex Mex enchilada was not TexMex. It came with the wrong type tortilla to be TexMex. It was either a white or yellow corn tortilla instead of the requisite red tortilla, this prevented me from giving an extra star. It got too soggy with the TexMex sauce on top. I would have prefered they put he chili con carne that was on the relleno on top of the enchilada. The refried beans were some of the best I have eaten and the rice was pretty good. If you haven't been to Chuy's before, don't come expecting traditional TexMex. They have their own interpretation of what Mexican food is. It is more of a southwest style Mexican, similar to what you find in new Mexico. It's pretty good food though. read more

Went to Chuy's on a busy Friday night and we opted to eat in the bar at a high top table. The noise level was deafening. Four TV's we're working, one was not. Sports were on 3 and news on another. We ordered house margaritas which actually weren't bad for Happy Hour prices. We ordered another and it was forgotten until the waitress eventually made it back with our dinners some 45 minutes later. Other tables were having attentive service with chips, salsa and drink refills, our waitress was either overtaxed or lazy and wasn't seen in our area. The food.....I had Taco's Al Carbon. The meat was chewy to,point where it had to be spit out. The beans, rice and plate in general was cold, had no taste. The chicken was tepid at best and had very little flavor. The tortilla chips were thin and done well. They were the only warm food I was able to enjoy this evening. My wife had a chimichanga which she said was hot and done well. I would have sent my food back but the waitress was AWOL most of the time. Nothing like a nice dinner out while the busboys zipped all around you with dirty plastic bins, scooping up used plates and such from tables and banging the dishes around to add to the already high noise level. The tables, floor and restaurant looked and felt unkempt. The wait staff, kitchen and staff appeared to be over their heads. Chuys before COVID was my favorite place but now the quality was horrible. The chicken had skin, fat, and a knuckle. The beans were very salty and the rice had no flavor. Chuy's has been a favorite stop of mine since 1983 in Austin at the original location on Barton Springs... Although this location in SA has only been here a few years, It is the one closest to my home and every so often, I will get a craving... Happy Hour Free Nacho Car Bar brings me back over and over with a discounted lime and strawberry swirl. Did you know there was a special way to make the perfect queso? ... Start with a little bit of bean in a bowl, top with a good portion of ground beef, then smother it with the hot spiced melted cheese... Yep, that's it! Grab another bowl and fill it with salsa. Grab a basket full of chips and you got a cheap dinner! It has been awhile since I actually have had a meal at Chuy's. The last one I did have wasn't all that great. No one at our table was really happy. So we decided that will just stick with an occasional HH Nacho Car Bar. That makes me happy! What I also love about Chuy's, the quirky weirdness of it (Keep Austin weird, right?!), the black felt paintings, and the love of all things Elvis... Want to celebrate Elvis' birthday on Jan 08? Blah, blah, blah, Austin this and Austin that. I have a coworker who went to UT and he won't shut up about Austin. Although I support their football program, it grates on my nerves to hear about how cool Austin is all the time. When they opened the first Chuy's in San Antonio (they are based out of Austin) this co worker just went on and on about them, so I made it a point to avoid the joint at all costs. Well, I finally gave in a couple of weeks ago and I have been to this location twice now. Let me start this review with the default salsa that comes with the chips - it is AWESOME! It's made from fresh raw tomatoes instead of cooked or smoked tomatoes like most Tex-Mex places serve. The flour tortillas are home made - thick, warm, and tasty. I've had the smoked pork enchilada plate and the carne guisada enchiladas. So far, I would vote for the pork enchiladas. The carne guisada enchiladas were also good, but they were very salty. The final thing I want to talk about is their patio - it's also AWESOME! Very nice breeze and comfortable seating. Some places tend to forget about their guests on the patio, but not Chuy's; the service was great. read more

This is a great spot for work as well as family gatherings. There is a sauce for everyone and they make a mean margarita. No matter the occasion, it will quickly become a celebration. They always seem to remember you after the first visit and the wait staff will often go out of their way to ensure your selection is tailored to you. They are very good with large parties. I have had as many as 20 people and the entire staff works together and help each other out. I have even seen them call taxi's for parties to ensure everyone got home safely. We go here after church with my parents pretty often. My dad is in a wheelchair and their wheel chair ramp is pain. My mom though that it would be nice to drop him off in the back where the ground is level and he could roll right up this short sidewalk and into the restaurant. Nope...no ramp. Shrimp tacos! Yum... Nachos...Yum as well. My son got a burrito and it was HUGE but he said it was great. Their refried beans are probably the best I have ever eaten. Their salsa can be hit or miss...either its not hot or its hotter than the hubs of hell. I love the thin crispy chips. Their tea sometimes is a bit bitter. I wish they had the high chairs like they have at the 281 location that has the one strap that you strap your kid in. My little girl can escape the normal high chairs with a quickness. Wanted to finally try some Tex-Mex. The decór of this place reminds me of a Chili's... it has a bunch of hodgepodge of things. This place is known for its chimichangas. We ordered the chips with salsa and the ranch jalapeño sauce, which was absolutely the bomb. The chips were the super-thin chips that I love, and the cool part is that when the wait staff sees the chips are dwindling, the come by with a scoop full of chips to refill the basket with. Score! I ordered the comida combo -- which had cheese tex-mex enchiladas, chicken flautas, a seasoned ground sirloin crispy taco, guacamole & homemade tostada chips dipped in chile con queso. A great combo to be able to try different things. I liked the crispy taco and chicken flautas, but I felt the dish overall was too salty for my taste. After doing Chuy's in Austin as a college student years ago, I brought my husband to try Tex-Mex. It was a rocky start with the hostess. But, wow, did it get better. My husband loved it, and I fell in love with the beef fajitas - again! We also shared the Saturday special: green chile chicken flautas. Delicious! The freshly made corn and flour tortillas were a treat. Our waiter, Austin, was fabulous! And the restaurant had cool music, like Dave Mathews, playing in the background.
