I laugh as I write this because the locals all know some of the juxtaposed cuisine not matching the location. Good Sushi in Old Town ? Best Filipino in Downtown ? Best Italian in Barrio Logan ? We celebrated our Anniversary dinner here and while we were driving over, I was like.....we are in Barrio Logan, we must be eating Mexican. My husband had made the reservation and we were seated right in front of the desserts and cheeses staring at us the whole night. The place screams mom n pop, but here I am the next day researching on why the food was so freaking delicious. Now I get it ! If you remember getting drinks and cheeses at Bice when it was in the Gaslamp (or the Bice in Milan), you get it. If you can only imagine the uphill climb of a restauranteur who bought a burned down building and put in sweat equity right before Covid and then surviving the Covid years, you will get it. It is all the labor of love of Milan Mario who swapped out the Michelin fine dining to bring you a truly authentic neighborhood place. Once you dip into the bread and scoop out the cheese and olive oil, you will be blown away. We did not get the mushroom flan or the huge charcuterie platter, but that is what I realize now, is the must have and we will be back for this for sure. We ordered Frito Mixto, Veal Milanese, Pesto Gnocci, Tuna Tartare, Braised Beef Ravioli....all were excellent. The gnocci are sooooo fluffy and light. Everything was spectacular ! They snapped a polaroid picture of us and our nutella written "Happy Anniversary" tiramisu plate. What a wonderful secret garden place. I can not wait to try Mario's upcoming pizza place soon. Thank you for the hospitality and no matter the location, good food is good food. Parking is so much easier here than in Little Italy. Such a cozy neighborhood spot! Mario made us feel right at home, and the service was fantastic from start to finish. The patio is charming, and the inside is just as warm and inviting. The focaccia with butter and olive oil was incredible. We also loved the fettuccine Bolognese, squash blossoms, tiramisu, and the vegan espresso martini and Hugo Spritz. Our first time here. Parking was difficult to find since it was only street parking. The restaurant is pretty with a spacious outdoor patio. The complimentary foccacia bread was yummy. Our food was good, but it didn't wow me in any way considering all the hype on social media and here on Yelp. Same with their service. We had to ask a couple of times for our server to take our order. In addition, we were celebrating a birthday (even indicated on the reservation) but no special birthday treat was offered - not entitled but why have it online to indicate if it's going to be ignored? We had an OpenTable reservation for the earliest seating (4:30 PM) and arrived when only one other table was occupied. As a party of two, we were surprised to be seated at a very small table near the entrance to the outdoor dining area and directly beside a family with young children, despite there being plenty of open seating elsewhere in the restaurant. The table itself was barely large enough to accommodate our water glasses, a glass of wine, a beer, bread basket, and bread plates. Space quickly became an issue throughout the meal. When our shared tomahawk ribeye arrived, there would have been nowhere to place it had we not already finished our fried zucchini appetizer and bread. Fortunately, the food more than made up for the seating disappointment. Everything we ordered was delicious, and the tomahawk ribeye was excellent. Our only negatives were the table assignment and the challenge of finding street parking on a Sunday in Barrio Logan. In hindsight, we probably should have taken advantage of the valet parking option ($10 plus tip). We would definitely return for the food, but next time we'd likely request patio seating and hope for a more spacious table and a quieter location within the restaurant. read more

I've been to Ciccia Osteria three times now, once on my own, once with my mom, and most recently for a birthday dinner for five, and every visit has been a hit. We've tried a good portion of the menu. The mushroom flan is a must, think savory quiche. Favorites also include the barley salad, roasted vegetable salad, malfalde ragu, crab gnocchi, lasagna, ravioli, and the stuffed squash blossom. Everything was delicious and I'd order it all again. The only dish that didn't stand out was the zucchini. Desserts were just as good. We tried the pistachio, tiramisu, and panna cotta. I recommend their house wines and they also allow BYOB with a $22 corkage fee. A few things to know. Parking in Logan can be tough and they are closed on Tuesdays. Service is incredibly warm. The team is friendly and made our birthday feel special with photos and a cute Polaroid keepsake. They offer both indoor and outdoor seating plus a cozy fire pit area for larger groups. Service was nice, attentive and someone I can only assume was the owner/manager was very cheerful when welcoming my gf n I in for our anniversary dinner. At first, I liked it okay but it got better with each bite. A friend got the crab gnocchi which just the right amount of creamy, lots of crab. We had reservations for 7:30 and, even though we arrived a few minutes late, they were accommodating and seated us without issue. We started with the mushroom flan, which was absolutely delicious, and some bread with oil and butter -- the bread itself was soft and spongy, though it would have been much better warm. For drinks, I had the house Chianti (so good that my boyfriend, who started with a spritz, switched to the Chianti for his second round). For mains, I had the pappardelle; while the sauce was excellent, the pasta was a little too chewy for my taste. My boyfriend's lamb pasta was flavorful but a bit heavy on the lamb and not the most appealing to look at. Despite our bread gluttony, of course we had to order the richly flavored Mushroom Flan with savory Pecorino cheese crust, which lived up to its many accolades from other diners. We followed with the Squid Ink Pasta with fresh salmon, saffron sauce, and crispy vegetables as well as the Crab Gnocchi with creamy white sauce, asparagus, corn, and jumbo lump crab - both of which ate deliciously and not at all heavy as one might fear at first glance. Of particular note, the al dente of the squid ink noodles was absolutely perfect! We finished our meal with a smooth and light Passionfruit Panna Cotta. Despite the restaurant becoming more and more full throughout the evening (we arrived just after opening), we were checked on continuously by not only our main server Ani but a number of others, including one who took a Polaroid of us as an old school memento of our visit. It's such a predominantly Latino neighborhood, so finding this authentic Italian gem was a cool twist. The place was absolutely buzzy and packed on a Friday night. We ordered the calamari to start, followed by the lasagna, ravioli, and sombreri. The food is definitely delicious. One thing to note about the lasagna: there wasn't meat between the layers, just a meat sauce added on top. I'm guessing this is the true authentic Italian style, and it was tasty! Just be prepared for the bill and the portion sizes. It wasn't cheap--we spent over $150 for three of us on just pasta and an appetizer. The portions are on the smaller side (definitely not 'American size'), so keep that in mind if you're starving. Although, support staff was limited, they did their best and accommodating our needs and ensuring we were well served. We cannot rave enough about the gnocchi here and honestly one of the best gnocchi dishes we have had in awhile. I ordered the Cappelli (brown butter, celery root, pancetta) which was so delicious and unlike any pasta I've had before. We also got the Gnocchi Pesto and Bottoni (prosciutto, potato, peas) which were also good and unique. The ambiance feels cuter and more authentic than the typical Instagrammable Italian restaurants usually seen in SD. The service was also good. Food: Got the beef cheeks and orzotto. Orzotto was fine, no comments. Probably wouldn't get again. The beef cheeks on the other hand... Beef itself had a good wine braised flavor, however I wish it was more tender. The beef portion was also decent considering the $37 price tag. The risotto was drowning in butter. I couldn't even finish eating the risotto due to how overpowering the butter was. Had really good initial flavor but it gets overwhelming quick... and there's not a lot of risotto. Would not recommend beef cheeks. Tuna tartare was not for us. Just tasted clinical and lacked any excitement. The bread and oil/butter was 10/10. Absolutely delicious. This is my second visit at Ciccia Osteria and I was just as happy this time as I was the first. The restaurant is cozy and inviting, like eating in the dining room with your family and/or friends. My family and I were welcomed and given a table almost immediately which was surprisingly quick for a Friday night. I loved the selection of the chef's specials menu and that it seems to change regularly, everything on the menu sounds delicious. Everything was delicious and every dish was scraped clean. Amazing experience. We were seated upstairs, which was so cozy and quaint. Our server was incredible, and the food was delicious. The complimentary focaccia with ricotta to start was outstanding. We ordered the lasagna, ravioli, pesto gnocchi, and branzino, and everything was amazing. We also got the "ugly chocolate cake" (i.e. chocolate flourless torte) and tiramisu, both were great. The owner was walking around talking with customers--very hospitable. Will definitely be back! read more
