We had a fantastic time dining at Truva, easily one of the best Mediterranean spots in San Diego! The food and service here is stellar: consistently good (we've been a few times now) and you can get some truly out-of-this-world dishes you just can't get anywhere else. We started off with the Mezze platter which was thoughtfully assorted - this is a meal all on its own. To drink I would highly recommend the Sangria, one of the best we've had here. The shrimp and beef skewers were very hefty and juicy, cooked to perfection. Do not skip dessert here: the Knafeh with the goat milk ice cream was so tasty and especially unique! I stay at Sofia hotel once a month for work. I stay here for about a week at a time. I decided to try the food in this restaurant for the first time I arrived about 45 minutes before they closed. I ordered a drink, an appetizer and the beef kebabs. The Server rushed me along after I got my drink, so I went ahead and ordered my appetizer my food at the same time. In which I received my food and my appetizer at the same time. Appetizer was OK it's hummus and bread. You can't quite mess that up. The entrée was terrible. Five pieces of beef kebab that were inedible because they were so chewy. The beef was sitting on what was supposed to be pita, what was actually a burrito size tortilla folded up burnt covered in butter. Sitting there for a while I just plain stopped eating my food. The server didn't seem to notice. He didn't even offer me another drink when he came by and just dropped the bill. Wait, not a bill a card reader so I wasn't even able to see the total of what I ordered. I took a box of the food and I left. Between the Food, the service and the price I'm very disappointed. His objective was to just get me out as soon as possible. Honestly, I won't go back. In retrospect, I should have complained refused to pay and left. Looking for a great breakfast spot in the Gaslamp? This one is definitely worth a visit. The food was outstanding--generous portions, beautiful presentation, and everything arrived hot and fresh. I enjoyed it so much that I came back the very next day and even brought friends. The restaurant has a welcoming atmosphere with both indoor and outdoor seating, plus a bar near the entrance if you're looking to grab a drink. That said, my second visit was a different experience. The first time, the service was excellent and everything arrived exactly as ordered. On my return, however, service was noticeably slower, and several items were forgotten despite multiple reminders. This wasn't a minor oversight like forgetting ketchup--it included their maple syrup, which is a $5 add-on. Overall, the food alone is enough to earn a recommendation, but the service seems to be inconsistent. If they can deliver the same level of service I experienced on my first visit every time, this would easily be one of my top breakfast recommendations in the Gaslamp. read more

We went here based upon the reviews and it was close to our hotel. The previous reviews are correct. This restaurant is a must do if in San Diego. We had the salmon snd lamb skewer. They both included stir fried veggies, tzatziki, rice, and salad. Portions were more than ample and priced at $28.00 they are very fair. Wine list, while limited, was well stated in the menu. The server, Kevin, was cordial and accommodating. The restaurant was not busy at 4:30 so it was very quiet and the ambiance was new and refreshing. Truva is the new flagship restaurant on the ground level of the Sofia Hotel in downtown SD. It has been open for less than two weeks and features Mediterranean based cuisine in a modernized old-school setting. A copy of the dinner and drink menus was on display at the hostess stand outside on the sidewalk in front of the entrance. Starters, seafood, and sides made up the left column of the food offerings. The other column listed the salads and main dishes. As I walked in, the workers at the central bar greeted me and told me to sit anywhere as there was only one other party seated. I would say the capacity was sufficient for about 50 customers. I started my meal with an order of the Stuffed Grape Leaves (aka dolma). Six pieces of grape leaves were filled with rice, currant, and fresh herbs. The plate was garnished with arugula, sliced grape tomatoes, and a lemon slice. The herbs added extra fragrance to the item. For an entree, I picked the Bodrum Blaze Steak and Fries which was marinated diced beef served over fries with creamy garlic yogurt and tomato sauce. Unfortunately, my server incorrectly placed an order for the Ribeye Steak instead. What I received was a fusion of the two dishes as the contents didn't match either of the descriptions. A chargrilled ribeye cooked medium rare was served with white rice, a cup of french fries, a side salad, and some mushrooms and diced potatoes. There was a lot more food than I had expected, and it was all presented on a wooden board as the serving vessel rather than a plate. I think the kitchen added the fries as a complimentary side because of the mistaken order. That resulted in too much starch with the rice and diced potatoes already on the board. I wish the staff would have checked with me first to perhaps redo the course instead of proceeding with a steak and informing me of the faux pas after the fact. The final cost was also nearly 50 percent higher than my intended entree as there was no discount applied. read more

I was staying in the Sofia Hotel for the weekend and passed the hosts/hostesses standing outside the Truva a few times, so on my way back from dinner one night I asked about their hours. Most days they are open 7am-10:30pm, except Fridays and Saturdays when they're open until 11pm. They told me that this place just opened a couple weeks ago and I have to say, I have a feeling they'll do quite well! The interior is very cute and trendy as well, which allows Truva to keep up amongst the already established eateries in other hotels in the Gaslamp district. For example, I had just eaten at Seneca Trattoria the night before and got lucky by snagging a bar seat. Since Truva is still new, you can expect food just as delicious, servers just as attentive and a great atmosphere with NONE of the wait. I am from San Francisco, so I experience my fair share of hotel restaurants that make a name for themselves as delicious and trendy places to have dinner and drinks in the city. I would definitely say that if Truva existed in San Francisco, I would gladly eat there on the regular. I was served by Paulina and she was extremely helpful and sweet. I met her the night before when I inquired about the restaurant hours and she definitely convinced me to come back the next morning. Since Truva was still in its grand opening period, I was given 10% off my meal. I came during brunch which runs from 7am-2pm, so I ordered the babaganoush to start, a turkish coffee and the shakshuka. First of all, I inquired if I could have the Turkish coffee as a latte since I like my coffee with milk. I knew it might be a difficult request but they were able to accommodate and even asked if I wanted caramel or vanilla in the latte, or whether I wanted it hot or cold. It turned out delicious and sweet, just how I like my coffee. The babaganoush came out very quickly and was delicious. I had just come from working out in the hotel gym prior and I felt good eating this post-workout. As for the shakshuka, it was really yummy but light too! The flavors were great and the whole board was well balanced between the shakshuka and poached eggs, the crispy potatoes and the little side salad. The vegetables were topped with black sesame seeds and it balanced the acidity of the red onions + tomatoes perfectly. Lastly, I added the side of soujouk because I've never tried it before and I usually love seasoned mediterranean meat dishes. The flavor was exactly as I expected it to be. If you're a fan of kabobs (think kofta) then you'll definitely love soujouk. I almost ordered the soujouk and eggs plate but the shakshuka was too hard to resist. If you're not a fan of savory breakfast, they have a whole section for pancakes/waffles and yet another for crepes. The specialties sounded great as well so it was hard to choose. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the meal and The Sofia should be glad that such a tasty restaurant is attached to them. I'm flying all my leftovers with me back to San Francisco tonight. Although Truva is mentioned on the hotel website, if the hotel staff mentioned that the restaurant was brand new and running a promotion, I would have eaten there sooner. But that's just a small, nitpicky observation. It's also a great place for any hotel guests to enjoy mimosas or cocktails - their drink menu looked delicious. I would definitely come back to stay at The Sofia just so I can eat at Truva the next time I find myself in San Diego and staying in the Gaslamp district. I hope to try the dinner menu next time. Came in twice this week to check out the brunch and dinner menu. The food is super fresh and plated beautifully. Service was awesome and the decor has a sleek, clean, and peaceful vibe. The best thing on the menu has to be the Ribeye Steak. It has a super savory gravy, the smoothest mashed potatoes, a hefty side salad, and basmati rice. The cocktails are awesome. My favorite is the Burn Baby Burn. It was like a pineapple/cinnamon/jalapeño mezcalrita but with lemon. Well balanced and refreshing. We happened to be staying in the hotel (the Sofia) where Truva occupies the lobby, and had breakfast. Each member of our party of four was very impressed with the amazing food. My favorite part is that they offer brunch every day--meaning you can get the amazing Shakshuka or any other breakfast dish for lunch during the week. The Shakshuka so good I've gotten it twice (added soujouk the second time), but my colleagues have enjoyed the falafel, stuffed grape leaves, and soujouk & eggs. The staff are lovely and helpful. There are hundreds of places to eat in San Diego, which is why I feel slightly ridiculous admitting that we ate at TRUVA three times during a single trip. Then again, if a restaurant can lure you back three times when you're on vacation, perhaps embarrassment is unnecessary. TRUVA had only been open a few weeks when we visited, but it already felt like the sort of place people will eventually claim they "discovered before everyone else knew about it." The owner is from Istanbul, and her love of Mediterranean food is evident in every dish that leaves the kitchen. Over the course of three visits, we sampled the Dutch Pancake Flight, shakshuka, stuffed French toast, spinach pie, The Ultimate Lox Sandwich, mimosa flights, excellent coffee, and memorable specialty pancakes before heading to the airport. Every single dish was beautiful, fresh, thoughtfully prepared, and absolutely delicious. The Dutch Pancake Flight was outstanding. As someone who makes Dutch babies at home, I don't hand out compliments lightly. I genuinely couldn't decide which of the three versions I liked best. The shakshuka arrived sizzling in a hot skillet with perfectly cooked eggs, potatoes that somehow managed to be crunchy on the outside and creamy on the inside, and fresh greens that made the entire dish feel vibrant and alive. The stuffed French toast was decadent without being heavy, and The Ultimate Lox Sandwich was one of those dishes where every ingredient seemed to know exactly why it had been invited to the party. But what ultimately made TRUVA special wasn't just the food. During one visit, I mentioned that I make Dutch babies at home and serve them with lemon curd. The owner was surprised that I cooked and immediately wanted to talk about it. A few minutes later, she brought out a sample of her house-made lemon curd for me to try. It wasn't a sales pitch. It was simply one food lover sharing something she was proud of with another person who would appreciate it. That small moment told me everything I needed to know about the restaurant. The servers were attentive, the owner was present and engaged, and every visit felt genuinely welcoming. My husband and I had recently traveled to Istanbul, so we spent time sharing stories with her and learning about hers. By our third visit, we felt less like customers and more like guests. Great restaurants serve excellent food. The truly memorable ones make you feel cared for while you're eating it. TRUVA does both. read more

OMG- the best restaurant ever. I regret I live in LA and not SD. I would be a regular. Mel, the owner is so personable and explained all the dishes to us. We were there for breakfast and it was spectacular. They cure their own lox, make their own bread, lemon curd, all sauces and much more. The menu has something for everyone. The grape leaves and traditional cheese bread were amazing. They use special filo that is so light and crisp.
