I've lived down the street from this place for well over a year and just tried it. The chips and salsa were fresh and spicy. Loved the warm chips too. I ended up ordering the Carne Asada. It was a bit fatty but very good. The beans were perfectly seasoned and tasted great. My favorite was the rice, which I had expected to be bland by looking at them but they were just a little salty and complemented the savory steak well. The meal also came with a massive jalapeño. At first I thought it was stuffed. However it was just big but I thought that was an awesome way to let the customer spice up the meal to their delight. While I did try it, the salsa was spicy enough for me so I let it be for the most part. Finally, I got a strawberry Tres Leche cake that was a bit dry but after the meal a good ending. My favorite part was definitely the bill! I haven't eaten that good for that cheap since I was last in Mexico City. Really great place. Truly a hidden gem of Long Beach. In Long Beach for the weekend and this was a welcome find as the food was delicious and the price was right. I had a wet carne asada burrito and my wife had the chicken quesadilla. The burrito was awesome and my wife's quesadilla was loaded (and awesome!). Chips and salsa were perfect. The only negative is there was a smell of disinfectant or floor cleaner in the air... I usually don't write reviews but i just had to this time. I ordered a torta de asada and a shrimp tostada and both had no taste. There was no hint of lime to the tostada. i felt like i was eating a shrimp cocktail on a tostada only this shrimp cocktail had no lime ketchup or taste. very dissapointed. If they would have just included a lime and maybe some type of hot sauce it would have been better. The torta honestly tasted like nothing very bland. i could not even finish it. Im definitely not ordering here again and the food was very expensive. Terrible service. Walking in and getting seated was not a problem, as they only had a few customers seated. After getting our food plates we sat for about 6-7 minutes staring at our plates because the silverware was not dropped off. We waited thinking she would come back. Because how could you forget to bring silverware since you don't have it set on the table already, right? And no, she actually took longer because she was dropping off one plate and silverware at another table. Which is fine if it's a busy hour but it wasn't. She also wasn't the only server. We politely called her over and her whole demeanor changed to appear she had an attitude. As if we were out of place for calling her over. We just asked her if we can have silverware before our food gets cold. She rolled her eyes and said yes, walked back to get them. We asked for a drink and again gave us the impression we were interrupting her day. After she brought it, nobody ever came back to check on us. We had to ask for the bill since nobody was coming around (although it wasn't busy). Food was okay. Glad I enjoyed my company but I will definitely take my business elsewhere. My boyfriend and I were craving Mexican food last night and decided to come here because it was within walking distance of home (pretty much our criteria for going out anywhere). I'm really glad we did--my shrimp burrito was delicious! I ordered it dry, but I think I'll get red sauce and cheese next time to spice it up a bit. The chips are freshly made and perfectly crisp, and the salsa is spicy and wonderful. Definitely a great go-to for cheap Mexican cravings. As far as the service goes, it was decent. The servers there were also on their dinner hour, but they had no problem getting up from their table to check on us and make sure we had everything we needed. They were definitely nice. I know to some, the idea that they were sitting at a table and eating next to patrons might seem weird, but to me it just made the place feel more like home. My fiancée and I recently moved out to Wilmore City and I was sent out on some errands. I was walking back home and stumbled across this place and went in to get some food to bring back home since we didn't have anything on hand and I picked up a couple of nachos for both of us. Ever since then, we have come back repeatedly thanks to the amazing food and fantastic service. While the menu items are cheap, the quality of the food has never been anything less than stellar and my vegetarian SO has always been able to find something that she can eat. I've read some reviews about the service being terrible but the waitstaff has always been kind, punctual, and more than happy to cater to all of our needs. And come on, $2.75 for domestic beers? That totally sealed the deal for my Midwestern gal! read more

Much of the appeal of my apartment (and perhaps what makes me pay much more than I should) is the fact that it is smack dab in the middle of all of the Downtown Long Beach action. I mean, literally, my car doesn't usually move very much after I come home from work Friday evening, until I go back to work Monday morning. We walk pretty much everywhere. The only problem... we could never find a GOOD Mexican restaurant. I'm talking chile rellanos, chips and salsa, fish tacos, all that good stuff. Tequila Jacks? Uhh,... no. I ought to slap whoever suggests that. TJ's is good for one thing and one thing only: Taco Tuesday. Margs are pretty much the only thing they get right. And, beer. Since its in a bottle and all. Finally, a couple of lazy Sundays ago, we were starving, and really, really wanted Mexican food. I thought we were screwed unless we wanted to hop in the car and go drive somewhere, which we both really didn't want to do. But, I thought I would check Yelp anyway, because you never know what little place may be tucked away on a less-populated street. And what do you know?! There was a Mexican restaurant over in the more quiet, obscure area of downtown LB. So we walked up a few blocks on Pacific and found Cinco De Mayo. Its a little hole in the wall, so keep your eyes peeled. We walked in and noticed a sign "CASH ONLY". We never carry cash, so we turned right back around and walked up half a block to the market to hit up the ATM. 3 bucks in ATM fees later, we were ready to get our grub on. Suprisingly, for a late Sunday evening, this place was pretty packed. However, I'm pretty sure we were the only gringos there. I was worried that this may affect the service, but our server was a complete sweetheart. Even with my indecisive ass, she never skipped a beat. I think even I would get irritated with myself with the amount of time it takes me to figure out what the hell I want to eat. There were so many delicious-sounding options. I almost went with the shrimp fajitas, but instead, I decided to go with a little a la carte sampling of: chicken quesadilla (I know, I'm like 5 years old apparently), grilled fish taco, grilled shrimp taco. Manfriend sort of made up his own combination, which consisted of: 2 chile rellanos and 1 chicken taco.. rice and beans, of course. I forgot to mention one of the most important parts, at least in my book: the SALSA was AMAZING!!! Sooo good... perfectly smooth with just the right amount of heat. I hate when you go to a mexican restaurant and the salsa is weak and bland. Blah! This salsa was so perfect, I want to go back and see if they sell it by the jar. Or perhaps I'll take a thermos in and jack some... do you think they'll notice if I keep taking the salsa bowl under the table? Anyways, our food was pretty good. My chicken quesadilla was actually just a cheese quesadilla, but the tacos i ordered were so big that it didn't really matter, because i didn't eat much of it. The fish and shrimp were perfectly grilled... and not too salty!!! I always find that mexican restaurants pack their food with so much salt that I find myself having to ask for the whole pitcher of water. Manfriend's chile rellanos were pretty good too.. The rice and frijoles were pretty standard, but come on... who comes for the rice and beans? They also have beer and I think wine... at a decent price. This is one of a few cases I've experienced fairly recently where I really have to wonder about the usefulness of Yelp. I don't know if certain people who frequent certain places think that anything marginally edible and that passes basic health inspections is 4 or 5 stars, or maybe people are just overly generous with very low expectations when it comes to local cheap hole-in-the-walls. Case in point: Cinco De Mayo. I've lived in the area for over a decade and never tried this place, so I finally gave it a shot, along with my family, since I'm a huge fan of Mexican cuisine. This has always been off my radar for some reason, maybe because it's on Pacific just west of the main sections of downtown, and for me that's kind of a weird dead zone where I never go. As far as the place, it's a hole-in-wall, so I'm not going to rattle on about the decor and ambience, because that's almost moot. It's OK enough for what it is, though kind of on the dark side (daytime). As far as the service, I have to say our waitress was very nice and efficient. However, as far as the food, this has to be the worst Mexican meal I've had as far as I can remember, either here, in Mexico or anywhere else (except for maybe a meal I had on a Thai island where they were evidently clueless about what Mexican food is supposed to taste like--however, that at least had fresh ingredients). I had the carnitas dinner, which was the worst carnitas I've ever had. The pork tasted like old bad pork that was cooked or fried up about 5 different times in used burnt old oil. The beans that came with it had that same old oil flavor and the rice was flavored evidently by the same old oil and bad tap water. Also, no sides came with the carnitas, like onion, cilantro, guacamole, chile--nothing. It had a little lettuce with a splash of ranch on it. I had to ask for pico de gallo to smother it with, along with some bottled habanero sauce, so that it could at least be edible with some flavor beyond the old-pork-recooked-multiple-times-in-old-oil flavor. My s.o. had a chicken torta with the same poor experience--chicken that looked and tasted like old bad chicken that was re-cooked in bad old oil, avocado that was actually already brown and going bad, etc. She couldn't even eat most of her sandwich, because she was grossed out by it and didn't want to get sick. The chips were fine and the salsa was OK. Overall, extremely poor to the point of being so bad that it absolutely stood out in my mind. I'm losing faith in Yelp if I continue to try places this bad that get 4 or more stars on here. Maybe and hopefully, this was just a freak bad day for them, or maybe we both just got the wrong thing at the wrong time, but honestly, I'm not willing to give it another chance, not even if the meal was free. read more

After trying out too many watered-down Mexican food joints, Cinco De Mayo is like heaven to me. Of course at first glance, it's not really tempting... It's seriously ugly inside and out: tiny building, bad paint job, odd paintings of some Fabio look-alike (but Native American) guy carrying some hussy all over the walls.. BUT it's definitely a gem when it comes to their food. The mixtas (fajita with chicken, beef, and shrimp), enchiladas, and quesadillas are simply breathtaking. We came and realized they only took cash. So we asked the people inside and they were so kind enough to let us order first so theu can start cooking and let us walk down the street to chase. They have an atm but it has a fee. We saw the chsse before we entered. So we asked, and they said yes!! So we didnt wait long. The place was super clean and they were super nice. this place has a bright and shiny jukebox filled with tejano music sitting across the room from some velvet religious painting of an aztec warrior/jesus carrying a buxom woman on the edge of a cliff. what could be better, right? otherwise, very comfortable. great filling food. everything seems very fresh and made to order. there is a sense that this restaurant is run by a family, which makes it nice and cozy. the menu has a variety of selections with options for seafood, beef, chicken, and pork. there are also more interesting menu items like beef tongue if you're into that. everything is exactly what you would expect. great value for the quality and quantity. My husband and I have collectively tried the beef, chicken, and seafood and all were great. I recommend the burritos, which are monstrous or the fajitas which could feed to normal eaters. read more

Ok so I give 4 stars because the food and prices are great... if you are a Spanish speaker who orders (I always call in) the problem is that I've noticed when I personally call in (I'm not a Spanish speaker) my order is always very bland and the price is usually more than when my husband calls in (fluent in Spanish and of Hispanic decent). The food is amazing and the prices are great but let's be real every time I call in I'm over charged and they are magically out of salsa Verde or anything spicy. It's really sad that you judge and assume that I don't eat spicy if o sound like a call girl, I get it i may not be the ideal customer but I love authentic food and y'all are the closest to me. fantastic little place. so far one of my favorite spots for mexican in Long Beach. great value. went for lunch during work and it was so crowded although i could see why. delicious, cheap mexican food. wonderful chips and salsa. great mixed crowd. i've only been once and had a burrito, but coworkers who frequent often say they've never had anything bad. another friend mentioned a good seafood soup. i'll definitely be back to try other offerings. only downside is we went on a freakishly hot march day and it was a little stuffy in there. i think there were some fans blowing, but it still felt kind of icky. unless there was a rare breakdown of the ventilation system, i can't imagine it being especially pleasant during the heat of summer. 5/9/07 Update: their chips and salsa are pretty amazing. their chips are fluffy little crispy suckers. also tried their seafood soup, which was amazing! it was the shrimp and lime marinated fish soup. the shrimp was very crisp and the fish very soft and fresh tasting. fajitas were delicious. wonderful spices and flavors. the carnitas was just ok. read more

Restaurants named after holidays weird me out. Would you go to a place that served American food called "Fourth of July"? But name notwithstanding, Cinco de Mayo did not disappoint. There is parking behind the restaurant off of 4th Street. (Although beware - if you park on the left aisle the neighboring bakery will be coming after you!) You don't come here for the decor and I wouldn't recommend it for a first date. But you DO come here to eat, and the food is amazingly simple, good, and cheap! The chips and salsa were amazing - the chips were really thin and light and the salsa was spicy but still flavorful. My friends and I easily rolled through two full baskets of chips, and probably could've gone through a few more if our food didn't show up so quickly. Had a carne asada burrito that was equally awesome, and big enough to share. But at $4.75 you could easily afford to eat two on your own if you'd so please. Service was fast and friendly, and really, you've gotta love those places that give you pieces of candy with your check. I mean c'mon - it's like free dessert... read more

Being a tourist of the LBC, I had to check out Cinco de Mayo based on several reviews of its great Mexican food. Now, I was almost scared off by the fact that it's cash only, because I usually read that to mean "place is a total dump and I wouldn't let my dog eat there", but it ended up to be quite a treat. The food was spectacular and the service was friendly and speedy. Mexican food...how is it it comes out so quickly? It's almost like they know what you want in the back before you even walk in the door. One of the many mysteries in life, but I digress... First of all, the tortillas and salsa they put at your table when you walk in are worth the trip alone. They are are the lightest, least greasy, flakiest, least salty, most flavorful tortillas I've ever had. The salsa tastes homemade. There's so much swimming around in there, it's hard to say what spice and herb mixture they used, but it works wonderfully. I had the Fajitas Mixtas (steak, chicken, and shrimp). I think they marinated the beef in crack because it was delicious all on its own. The shrimp was yummy too. Next time I go back, I'm going to ask them to leave out the chicken though. Chicken is chicken and was somewhat boring. My wife had the taco special (tacos asada) and it was prepared in the traditional style: two soft tortillas, marinated steak, chopped tomato, chopped onion with a touch of cilantro and a lemon to squeeze over it. Also delicious. My sister-in-law had the tostada salad with chicken. She wanted something light and it came out exactly as that. A perfect meal for what she was craving. All in all, I'd recommend this place hands down. The only way this place would become more spectacular (and the reason why it's not five stars) is: 1. Ambience. It's a dive Mexican restaurant I know, but people pay for decor and they could spiff it up. 2. Bathrooms. Kinda gross (according to my dining companions). 3. No credit card. So I was in long beach and I remember eating at this place and liked it a lot , so I figured I will stop by again. Very different from the first time. By that I mean the customer service is horrible, the food was good but not great. I was going to order a tall can of modelo chelada and when she said it's $7. I was oh never mind. Are you kidding me? That's a major ripoff. The 2 servers just chit chatted away and never stopped by to offer refills. I almost left in the begging when I asked if it was cash only she did "yes" but she never bothered to let me know that they have an atm inside, that's just bad customer service and bad business . I'm not usually one to complain but this place just wasn't what I wanted to be I think having higher expectations of quality of the food influenced my disappointment. My first complaint being that I'm a huge salsa fan, I was let down by the runny salsa that was lackluster in terms of flavor. The freshness of the chips offset this, but only to some extent. Second, the carne asada was very salty and was more like shredded beef than real marinated asada. Lastly, the service on such a quiet night blew my mind. I had to ask for more salsa after purposefully sitting for 12 minutes (counted) waiting. When the server returned to give me the bland salsa, my water cup that I had to have to help to swallow the salty meat remained unfilled. I've had better burrito from most food trucks sadly.
