I love this place - it's like walking into a Brooklyn Italian time warp, especially with that enormous neon sign on the front of the building that says "Dolceria." Went today and they had Easter items - little pastures decorated with marzipan chickens and a large chocolate lamb. I haven't seen anything like it since I was in Italy, Bought a pound of their delicious anisette cookies and a dozen mini pastries and a large lobster tail, all for only $17. Unbelievable! And everthing is scrumptious - specially the sfogliatelle. It's a pain in the butt to drive here from Manhattan, but I'd take the subway if necessary to get to this little bit of heaven. I am a frequent visitor of Circo's. I kid you not, for the past five times I have visited, the owner is snapping at the employees. Today I go in and the frightened young woman tells me there is no ice for my matcha lattes. I give her an incredulous look and remark, "no ice?!" Because it boggled my brain that I couldn't purchase a delicious matcha latte ( you should still try one from here btw) because of ice. I almost offered to go get a bag of ice, but I saw the terrified look on the young woman's face as she repeated, "um no ice" awkwardly, several times, looking around frantically. The owner is behind me, by the way , on the other side, snarking at the other girls and she seems too scared to even ask him. I tell her to forget it and walk out. I don't think it's the customer service girls who are terrible. I think they're all frightened and abused by this mysogynistic italian man. Good thing MY italian man never speaks to me like so. seriously, the way he speaks to them is incredible. Stay in school ladies and get out of that pastry shop. sheesh! I used to visit this shop back in the 90s and it was never this way. Perhaps the son was forced into this business hehe. Take a vacation. Don't ruin this gem please. read more

Like a few others, I think my biggest disappointment is to have heard/witnessed how the managers/bosses speak to their employees. The girls who are at the front all seem young but it truly doesn't seem like a comfortable or safe place for anyone to enjoy working in. The pastries here are amazing! Even though they do stay in freezers for a while before actually selling them. The cookies stay frozen for about 6 weeks and the cakes for about the same amount of time or not even more. A lot of the pastries that are sold here are not even their creations but actually items they buy from other sellers I know this because when I visited a while ago they were placing orders over the phone for Macarons, Apple Turnovers,Croissants Sfoidells and other breakfast items. The worst part of this business is the way the owners treat their employees. The girls there are so scared of them its hard to watch. Girls are always in and out so its hard to keep count. They yell at them, shove them, and even make them cry. The owners are disgusting and you can easily find better business somewhere else. Amazing job!! I filled out an order the day before my birthday, because I decided I wanted one. They called me and instantly catered to my needs. I'm a musician and they were able to create a delicious Red Velvet Cake with a picture of me on the piano. It was awesome. I took the train from Harlem and it was worth every step!! As soon as you walk through the front door you are welcomed as if you were part of their family. This shop excels in all aspects from their old school style of Italian hospitality as well as their innovative pastries and cakes. I ordered two birthday cakes for my daughters 2nd birthday. It was an AWFUL experience. I asked for no airbrushing- both cakes were airbrushed. Asked for two identical cakes- the cakes werent even close to the same. I emailed a picture- the person making the cake improvised and added different colors because "he thought it looked better". The cakes did not match the rest of the party. And, the service was TERRIBLE. They took NO responsibility for their mistakes and were rude. Wow. This place is a gem! A literal classic - I think they've been in business over 50 years - with the most incredible canoli I've ever tasted. Entering this shop is like walking back in time 60 years. They have everything: a huge variety of baked goods, custom cakes, cookies, eclairs, donuts, all sorts of pastries, etc. etc. and everything I ordered was rich, had perfect texture and the right balance of ingredients.
