New in the area and knowing my love of BBQ friends invited me to partake in the local flavor. I must say for chain it didn't turn out as bad as did imagine (yes, I do have a lot of concerns w/chains). I order the City Sampler which came with four meats and two sides. It was also 1.25 rib bone night so I had a couple of those too. The pulled pork was nice tender and most. The brisket was even better which surprised me. The hot sausage was okay and the pulled chicken was too dry. I thoroughly enjoyed the greens, cause it had the same pulled pork infused throughout. The beans were rate right with the chicken, nothing to write home about. The ribs where what you'd expect from a BBQ house, but again not a big rib fan. All in all I wish I could bump it up another half star and would go again. read more

Yum yum yum comfort food! I consider myself a southern girl and BBQ is a family fave for me that I make often. I had the pulled chicken sandwich with Mac and cheese and hush puppies which was very good. First the beverage for a BBQ joint is tea and they don't disappoint with sweet and unsweetened. Also lemondade. The pulled chicken was seasoned nicely and very moist. Choose your sauce for topping which ranges from sweet, mild, to fire. I am picky about my chicken and don't like fat or a lot of dark meat. It had a little dark, but not much. The mac and cheese is creamy and only needed a little pepper for my taste. The hush puppies were okay, but I wish they had melted butter. They have butter pats out in the steel tool organizer where you will find wetnaps, salt pepper, sugar, and more. Check it out. Don't forget to get some fixin's from the bar area of pickles, onions, or heated sauces if that floats your boat. Also it's huge portions! All the sauces are on tables in recycled 6 pack cartons. Yes, you can find a few beverages of choice if you want one. They also have desserts like banana pudding, chocolate cake and cobbler. I just couldn't manage a dessert from the huge meal. This place has the best barbecue in the area.. I'm love barbeque so my first time coming here I stopped in by myself on my lunch break. I was so impressed. My food always comes out quickly, that's probably my favorite part about City BBQ. It's as fast as McDonalds but way more delicious. I always get a pulled pork sandwich and either cornbread or Mac n cheese. I'm sure the other stuff is good as well but I'm hooked on those sides! Four stars just because sometimes my food isn't super hot and because the past two trips they were out of cornbread. Overall, I'd definitely recommend City BBQ. read more

I am always on the look out for a really great BBQ joint that has the feel of being fresh out of Memphis or even better rural Texas. Well, City doesn't really have that feel. It's a chain although not a huge one and there's no mistaking that. But the food is terrific right up there with some southern mom and pop op. Be sure to ask for bark unless you have a heart condition. That's the charred fatty stuf which when mixed with the rest of the meat, ups the flavor 100%. read more

Our experience here was good. They probably have some of the most welcoming employees in town; the lady taking or order was friendly and helpful. My husband and I enjoyed getting samples of each of their sides as a complement for being a first time customer. Pretty awesome! All sides were delicious; however, the portion sizes were small. Meat was dry, not juicy. The meat was not tossed in sauce- staff just squirted a small amount of sauce on the center. Unfortunately, I won't return because I didn't like the dryness of the meat or the flavor of the bbq sauce- too sweet. read more

Very good for what I would call "city" (no pun intended) bbq. That is I don't see a giant plume of smoke and a huge smoker out back when I drive up. I had the brisket and pork and both were great. The meat was tender and shredded as opposed to some bbq places that *gasp* have to chop their meat into pieces. The bark was really good which is one of my favorite parts of bbq. The sauces on the table were good and the overall service was very friendly. The one thing I would recommend is some kind of platter for one person. I'm only in time for a short time and couldn't take any with me and it broke my heart throwing away good meat. Will stop by when I'm in town again!! read more

Yes, this is as good as it gets. First, City BBQ is all about customer service. I know by experience they will do their best to make a visit there a great experience and if they don't always measure up, they are very responsive to complaints and concerns. I'm a Texan by birth and heritage and moved up here 27 years ago. I was sad to not find BBQ like I had in Texas, but when City BBQ came along, I was so pleased because in the North, you have to import people who know BBQ and that's what they did. I love their food, their community focus in providing BBQ catering to organizations at a discount for fund raisers, benefits and youth organizations, etc. Perfect? No, but who is? I ordered 25 pounds of pulled pork for an event. Overall I was pleased with the food. City BBQ is one of the only places I will eat pulled meats from. I can be pretty picky when it comes to pulled meats. I'm easily grossed out if I find chunks of fat, gristle or skin in it and City BBQ does a great job of making sure it's very clean and free of all of those things. We arrived about 10 minutes early before the scheduled pick up time and they offered us free drinks while waiting. Food was ready on time. Staff were very friendly. There were however 2 things I was slightly disappointed about: They provided 3 different types of BBQ sauce with labels on them that said S, H or blank. We were not informed of what the different sauces were and several people got the H sauce, which turned out to be hot and could not eat it. Also, the buns were not included and were $3 per dozen. They were not standard size buns, they were small, so I could have went to the local grocery store and purchased full sized buns for cheaper. read more

I went to City BBQ for the first time two years ago after living in the area my whole life. I wish I would have discovered it alot sooner. Hands down the best BBQ place on the planet. I always get the City sampler deluxe for my wife and myself. Everything is always cooked to perfection. I could go on and on about how great everything is. My husband & I live in VA and visit our daughter who lives in Dayton OH and we were so surprised the first time eating here of the taste and quality of City Barbecue's pulled pork, chicken and very well smoked brisket. As of course this has become a favorite to frequent City Barbecue upon each visit. We enjoy trying the sides and by far the corn pudding has been the best next to the cornbread, baked beans and the "peach cobbler". Lots of good food for the cost! This place is the best! A great place to take the whole family. Such nice employees and great food. They helped us figure out how to order and gave good recommendations. When our food came out they let us sample some of the sides that we hadn't tried. The brisket was awesome and my favorite side was either the corn pudding or the smashed potatoes and gravy. I just moved here from TX, the home of Excellent BBQ... I went on a Tuesday when the ribs are 1.15 each.. I never heard of such a way of ordering.. usually back home is a half slab or a full slab. It set up a lot like Rudys BBQ in the fact that you order then grab a seat. we are a family of 5.. we had the Ribs which were "really good", notice I did not say Excellent. the Greeen Beans are good if you like canned mushy green beans in some kind of water with dried up bacon. The hushpuppies were dripping in grease, and the brisket was dry and not flavorful.. The sauces are very heavily based with molasses, way too sweet, it was like bbq candy sauce.. The hot one was ok.. not super hot, just less sugar. IF and that's a BIG if I would to go back, I would just get some ribs TO GO.. yeah by the way no plates.. not even paper.. I had to ask for plates.. Oh I'm sorry you expected us to eat like dogs and just bow our heads down into the pile of dry meat? The total for my family of 5 was $73.00 UNBELIEVEABLE! I have visited and enjoyed City Barbeque several times however I just returned home from buying a pound of brisket for carry-out. It was so dry and overcooked that I had to commit the ultimate sin and put bbq sauce on it to choke it down. This stuff isn't cheap but for good brisket it's worth it. We are always happy when we leave City BBQ. Their food is hot, fresh and as authentic as you can get in Dayton, OH. I love being able to add the sauce myself-try the vinegar and mustard sauces. North Carolina pulled pork topped with coleslaw is wonderful with nice crispy smoked bits. Corn pudding, mashed potatoes and baked beans all taste like a southern grandma made them. The mac and cheese is a bit disappointing, though-not enough real cheese flavor, but a kid will love it. read more

We order BBQ ribs, green bean with bacon and corn pudding every time.
