I ordered the pick 2 meats tray and got two sides. Their brisket is juicy, but have had occasions where it is drier. Their beans ARE MY FAVORITE, and their hushpuppies are a good size, and they give you plenty. I haven't been back to this particular City Barbecue since the Yelp event a long while back, but I was passing through this part of Charlotte and needing a takeout. So I popped in. The lady working the counter was super helpful and got me a $5 credit for installing their app and registering. Bonus. I chose the "Judge's sample" which included a half rack of ribs, pulled pork, quarter chicken, beef brisket and I chose one creamy and one spicy cole slaw as sides. Nicely packed, it was still warm when it got home. A great variety (that's the idea, Bruce) and we enjoyed the pork, brisket and chicken. The ribs, not as much. I was in the mood for spicy food so I decided on the Nashville Hot Chicken sandwich. I completely forgot to take a picture of the sandwich. It does not come with any sides or drinks. When I ate my sandwich I was extremely disappointed. There was no spice whatsoever. I honestly didn't taste any seasoning. I offered a friend of mine a piece because I thought that maybe my tastebuds were off and without me saying anything they said that the sandwich was bland. Wow ,what a great little spot! We got recommended this spot for the delicious macaroni and cheese and just decided to craft a whole lunch around that one side dish. That turned out to be a very good move. Everything we tried was really delicious. I got a barbecue sandwich and the barbecue was smoked beautifully and you have a choice of many different sauces. Wasn't crazy about the really sweet ones but the vinegar ones were perfect. My son got the Nashville hot chicken sandwich and he really love that. The chicken was very juicy and fresh and not oily at all. Our sides were divine as well. I tried the fried okra and we also have the baked beans. All were very delicious. Service was also very friendly. You order at the counter and then pick your order up at the front when they call your name. Pretty good BBQ for being in a university area. Though it was way too much food for me, I got the city sampler. Turkey and brisket were moist, sausage was good. The pulled pork was way too salty for me. Ordered sides of corn pudding and mac and cheese, but the cashier had me try the jacked mac after I ordered and paid, and let me have that instead. It was really good, piping hot and fresh, and would order again anytime! The ribs and chicken are similar if not worse than China buffet that's a couple minutes away. I really don't understand how it's four stars. Ribs were burnt and the taste was trash even with the sauce, pulled pork is tasteless and slapping the sauce on didn't do much nor help, the chicken was decent, the bread and sides were so so... I think the only thing I really enjoy from there was the cornbread. Wouldn't recommend this place considering there are so many options around! This place is unbelievable. Right across US-29 from the UNC CHARLOTTE campus, not to far from where Herlockers (a north Charlotte Institution) once stood! I chose their (South Carolina) mustard base sauce. The combination of the sweet and tender pork, barbecue sauce, creamy cole slaw and fresh bun provided an incredible taste. The fried okra was also delicious. The restaurant has a condiments bar with pickle chips and other items. This is a very nice touch. Honest review here peeps. First, there were several workers running the place with not much supervision. After we placed our order, they don't bring our food to us, even though there were workers just standing around. Second, the pulled pork was nothing but fatty, burnt skin, and the ribs were burnt as well. We also had the collard greens, potato salad, and Mac n' cheese, all of which had ZERO flavor. Finally, the corn bread tasted like a cooked loaf of flour and water. It was very dry and missing the sweet flavor of corn bread. The sauces were average and "nothing to write home about." My cousin that lives down in Charlotte suggested this place. He picked a winner. I had the half chicken and he allowed us to taste the brisket both were seasoned and slow smoked so that the smoky flavor was deep within the meat. I tasted the hand cut fries, they had a nice crisp outside and a great Idaho potato inside. The vinegar Cole slaw was good and tangy. The damn hush puppies, made me want to hush my mouth...so darn good. Local beer on tap, as well as bottled beer. If you sign up for the app you get five bucks off your meal. We always enjoy going here, there chicken is our favorite! However their ribs and pulled pork with their sauce is always a great choice. I can honestly say we have never tried the brisket however it looks like it would be tasty I'm just not a huge brisket fan. My one negative is their sides, we always do the Texas toast and u can never go wrong with that! However the potatoe salad and bbq beans it's like the recipe isn't consistent. Sometimes the salad is our favorite, and sometimes I feel like I'm eating straight onions. Same with the beans just not consistent. Came on Friday evening. Boardwalk was PACKED, so we followed the smell to this location. I got the tacos, wife got the pull pork sandwich, and our friends with kids got fries and some other stuff. My meal was very good. Our group asked me to go tell the staff that the fries were cold. I informed the lady at the counter, she said she would get us some fresh ones. About 25 mins later my friend's daughter looked me straight in the face & shouted out.. "where are the fries?!" I went back & spoke to a different girl & she said that she would bring them to me.. about 12 minutes went by & I noticed they were disturbing fresh fries to other orders, & we were neglected once again. So now it is time to shift gears & stay at the counter & remind you what was promised & who promised until I am satisfied as a customer(I hate having to do that). The young lady that was working grill did not hide the fact that she was highly annoyed & upset that she had to drop fries in the grill after the kitchen closed.. but we got out fries!!! I was apparent that the staff there that night did not have good chemistry working together. But at the end of the night, they asked how things we going & offered us some peach cobbler to go. What was offered: cornbread, salad, Mac and cheese, beans, sausage, pulled chicken and pulled pork. Cornbread - not a single person liked it, it was the talk of the lunch, lacked flavor and crumbled apart. It's like it was missing an ingredient or two when made. The butter and honey did not help. Mac and cheese - creamy but lacked cheesiness that I liked. Very deceiving in looks, taste did not match. I'm a Mac and cheese snob, so you got to be great here and this doesn't pass. Sausage - just tasted like a package I could get at the grocery store. Meh. Pulled chicken - probably the best of the day, but I've had better elsewhere. It was the saving grace of the meal. Pulled pork - this should be the star of a southern BBQ restaurant. While not bad by any means, I'm a person who thinks great BBQ is great when it doesn't need all the different sauces. This BBQ needs that. My husband smokes a better BBQ with flavor and ends. Huge disappointment here. This location still has a lot of bumps to work out because consistency is not key here. I was thrilled to have this University location open due to the proximity to my house and because I enjoy City Barbeque's food and Matthews location. However, after having been on multiple occasions, I can confidently share that the food is good but the food preparation/service is not great. If this place is busy and you're ordering take-out, make sure you CHECK YOUR ORDER before you leave because, chances are, they will screw it up. Even though they read back your order, they will still leave out items. Other than the accuracy issue, they still provide the same menu items found at other CB locations. Food is served pretty quickly and they will normally try to make up for any errors they have caused. On the weekends, I do wish that they had TWO people consistently on the registers. Most recently, I was there during the Saturday lunch rush and there was one cashier. The line was past the entrance and yet, the one cashier remained. Also, it would be helpful to have someone who periodically checks the tables and wipes up messes. Every time I've been there, the condiment & 'fixins' section (where the pickles, BBQ sauces are located) has always been sloppy. Doesn't really make you want to sample BBQ sauces when they're spilled everywhere. I must share that the CB app is great and allows for you to rack up points so that you can, in turn, redeem them for "rewards" such as taking $5 off any order, free beverage, dessert, etc. read more

The BBQ Wars heat up and this new one is going to give the ole boys a run for their money. This is the third location to open in the Charlotte lately. Actually the official opening date for this one is tomorrow June 19 and a fourth will be opening in Huntersville later this year. Founded a little over 20 years ago in Columbus Ohio, these guys have made a science of all styles of BBQ. Rather than just one style of BBQ, they have studied all and have have pretty much mastered all of them from Eastern NC style called a Lolo to the tomato based Lexington style to Mustard Based SC Style to Memphis to Texas Brisket to St. Louis Ribs. They showcased all of these and more and we got a chance to try smoked turkey, smoked Texas Sausage, BBQ Chicken, Pulled Pork, Texas Brisket and a full rack of St. Louis Ribs along with a number of sides including BBQ Beans, Potato Salad,Corn Pudding, Hush Puppies and for desert, Banana Pudding. Out of all of this, the only thing I did not like was the Hush Puppies which were a bit greasy on the inside. That said, forget the hush puppies because there are so many other things to dine upon and not fill us the the Hush Puppies. Very open and friendly staff and between on of the original founders, the store manager and dining room manager, they made us feel right at home. We had a chance to see the smokers both inside and out, the kitchen prep area and had several demonstrations on the proper way to serve the meat. This is going to be a good place for BBQ. I'm a little bit of a barbecue snob and I didn't think I would be impressed at all by City Barbecue. I was wrong. My lunch here was delicious. I enjoyed my experience here and plan to return. As soon as you walk in you are greeted with the delicious smell of smoky barbecue. The place looks spotlessly clean. They have a sanitation grade of 99 posted above the register. Everything is well organized and attractively decorated. The employees were very friendly and sincere. When I complimented the cashier on their sanitation grade she replied that everyone there takes pride in that. There isn't table service there. You order at the register and pick up your food at the counter when they call your name. They sell some bottled sodas chilled in ice or you may serve yourself a fountain drink or tea. Next to the drinks they offer a nice assortment of barbecue sauces to choose from. They also have a bar with unlimited pickles, onions, and jalapeños. Everything is convenient. The food was great. We both had the pulled pork sandwich with slaw. This place offers some neat side dishes on their menu. We both got corn pudding. It was amazing. The barbecue was good. It actually had flavor and wasn't dry. I wasn't a big fan of the slaw but everything else was bangin'! Both meals were less than $20. I consider that a fair price for what we received. I ordered a full slab of ribs with a 3 side plate, which I chose collard greens with pork, green beans with bacon, and corn pudding. My wife had the 1/2 slab of ribs a 3 side plate, which she chose mac n cheese, collards greens with pork, and cornbread. For dessert was peach cobbler. The ribs were good I always order mine dry, with the sauce on the side. They were cooked good and had a nice flavor and was tender with no over cooked hard spots, their original sauce to me was good but had too much smokey flavor. The strings beans were good, the corn pudding was good, I think it should be just a little sweeter. The collard greens were to hard and the pork was dry and had no flavor. The mac n cheese was really good. The cornbread was good. The peach cobbler was good. Customer service was good. This place is definitely worth another visit. I recommend it. read more

Hats off to the staff for rolling with the punches from last night! We came in with 35 people at once due to some last minutes dinner plans. They weren't expecting it, but they handled the rush better than anyone expected. The manager made sure he brought out all the food on trays while me and a couple of other people gave the proper items to each person.
