Finding a leg of barbecued chicken in my freezer reminds me I didn't review City Barbecue after going there for the first time in years. I recently decided to give them another shot after not liking how they did pulled pork, sauces and sides many years ago. I grew up around southern bbq, and having a bunch of fat in the pulled pork is a mortal sin. So now that I've gone back, decided to mix it up a bit and get a half chicken. Nothing fancy; added cornbread and a side (which I totally forget, might have been beans, or slaw). I halved the chicken up, ate the breast and threw the leg into the freezer. The chicken was still not what I would consider 'done'... too greasy. And now I have its counterpart in the freezer, and I don't think I'm going to eat it. And that's all I can say about this City BBQ... why isn't this stuff *done*? Strange thing is, I love the City BBQ ribs I get downtown on Buck-a-Bone night at the Clippers games. But those are done correctly. 3 stars for that. I can't imagine what would merit more stars here, or a repeat visit. read more

We had a pick scheduled for 11 am. When we arrived we were told it would be 15 minutes as they were just opening. Not a huge deal. After 20 minutes we got our food only to be told part of it was still cooking and would be another 15 minutes. At 11:40 we decided we couldn't wait any longer as we were going to be late. Went inside to cancel the last part and the manager said he was unable to do a refund and we would have to call a call center. Also the food was only just coming out of the oven and would have been another 10 minutes. We left afyer waiting 40 minutes, missing part of our order, and with no refund. Do not recommend pick up experience. read more

Lots of good food to pick here, but sadly I have to conclude that you should avoid the ribs. What was once my favorite menu item has now consistently (last five orders) been served dry and stringy. Shouldn't have taken me five orders to figure that out, but for years they were juicy and tender. Go with the smoked chicken or pulled pork. Both great. read more

First I would like to say I eat a lot of bbq so I judge it rather harshly. I ordered the brisket, smoked turkey breast, Mac n cheese, coleslaw, and hush puppy's. The brisket was dry and over cooked in my opinion, although the turkey was amazing. So juice and Smokey. Mac n cheese and coleslaw were nothing to write home about but still very good. Hands down there hush puppy's are some of the best I have ever had. Also there sweat tea is on point. I will return to eat here again and I highly suggest others to try it. read more

My wife and I flew in from Florida to visit some friends in Mansfield. They told us of this great BBQ place so we decided to try it. Loved it! Have to say that I enjoyed the mustard BBQ sauce so much that I talked my friend into bringing some to Florida last month. Didn't know that he would bring 2-gallons, but thats fine with me. Food was good. Service, not so much. The girl working the counter was kinda rude and acted irritated that we didn't know what we wanted. We wanted the order for there so we sit and eat at the picnic tables. But she never even asked and just assumed we wanted take out. No biggie. We took it out to the little patio anyway. The lady handing out the orders seemed irritated when we asked for pickles when she walked back by us and gave us 2 small sauce cups with 3 pickles each in them. When open as normal, they don't limit you to the number of picked you can have. I just want to drop a line and tell you all a story. Last week our WalMart ordered food to be delivered at midnight. When the order didn't arrive by 12:30 am we called Randy the catering guy. All I can say is that we had food by 3 am in the morning. He was able to get a store open, get the food freshly prepared and he drove the food to us from over an hour away. Our visit started great, when they found out it was our first visit they gave us complementary soft drinks. Then they let me sample the beef and pork, which were both amazing. I got the brisket sandwich, possibly the best I've ever had. The BBQ sauces I sampled on it were fantastic. For sides I got the corn pudding and hush puppies, which were both exceptionally good. The kids got ribs and fries, which I sampled and both were very good. I was excited to see that they had banana pudding, I had it for desert and it was the best I've ever had. When I first came here I was expecting a sit down BBQ restaurant where you're served by a waiter. Instead you go in, order, and wither take your food to go or on a tray to your table. This isnt a bad thing, just something some might want to be aware of. My go-to order is the Lolo's pulled pork sandwich with a side of mac and cheese and either the baked beans or hush puppies. Depending on what you get, this place can get expensive. It is tempting to get a bunch of sides (they have price deals if you get 2 or 3) so what would have been a $7 sandwich quickly can become more. The food is always fresh, fast and delicious. You can see right into the kitchen and the meats they're cutting. They also have sweet and unsweetened teas near the fountain machine which are both SO good and really complete a traditional BBQ meal. I recommend this place! read more

Food here is always deliecious! Only complaint is that on Yelp and Grubhub it says the delivery fee is $2.50+. There was no option for a delivery fee less then $4.50. I only ordered a sandwich and that is what I paid. After adding a decent tip for the driver it becomes not worth it. The driver isn't making extra money, it's third party so that kinda sucks. read more

Stopped on the way to our Emerald Isle vacation. Lashannon greeted me with an infectious zeal that carried through my entire visit. She led me through the sample and sauce availability and suggested items that added positively to my experience. I ordered a brisket sandwich and beans. She surprised me with a free drink, and utterly delighted me with TWO free sides! The brisket was thick cut, smoked well, with a delicious sweet/savory bark. The beans, corn pudding, and collards were outstanding. I wish we had a City BBQ in TriCities TN, and a Lashannon to greet at it :) Already bragged to my BBQ-loving brother about it, and we both plan to stop at the Durham location again on the way back to Bristol TN. read more

The food: phenomenal. The atmosphere: Country eclectic. The Electricity: So-so. Went here last night for dinner. They always have the best bbq, and the portions are huge. Ordered the pulled chicken on Texas Toast instead of a bun. No problems! Got two sides (Green beans and potato salad) and a drink (water). Value was great. SO much food! As soon as we sat down, we heard what sounded like a boom, and the lights went out. Now, eating at around 7:30 at this time of year (mid-late September), it gets dark quickly. No explanation as to what happened, and no remedy. We were forced to eat our meal in a very dark, very dimly lit environment. Luckily I knew everything was tasty, so sight wasn't too necessary. City Barbeque is great. I went three years ago and sat on the outdoor patio with my friend and enjoyed the wonderful brisket, ribs, cornbread, and toast. Granted - not extremely nutritious, but once every three months won't tear you down too bad. The customer service was fine and friendly and the place wasn't very busy, which made it an even better experience. The food came out after about a 10 minute wait - and the food was devoured immediately after receipt. I recommend a visit - specifically to the Henderson Road location because it's usually empty! read more

We told Ashley that it was out first time dining at City Barbeque and she was absolutely phenomenal! She told us all about the menu and her favorite items to order and answered all of our questions. While we weren't offered any samples prior to placing our order, she did give us a couple of small samples of sides we hadn't ordered so we would could try them. Just got off the phone with probably the rudest woman in the world. A huge, exasperated sigh when I asked if I could place a carry-out order. Then she proceeded to be snarky and condescending with her comments when she didn't understand something I said. After having eaten some great barbeque in Chicago, Southern Illinois, Detroit, and other places outside of Memphis/Texas/KC, I'll never say that only (insert city name) knows how to do barbeque. City Barbeque is a chain. They try a little too hard with their woodland interior, but so what? Barbeque could be served in a closed-down McDonald's for all I care. We placed our order at the first counter: ribs, pulled pork, beans, corn, bread, and iced teas. Our order was prepared and handed to us at the next counter. Only took about 90 seconds. Nice. But would it be fresh? Yep. Pretty good ribs. Nice and tender, slow smoked to the point where they almost fell off the bone, but still had a little bit of tug left in them. The pulled pork was very good too. We sampled all the sauces, but decided that the original sauce was the best. For a place that you have to walk up to the counter, fast food style, they were a bit pricey. I wouldn't mind a server in a place like that. But it is bbq. Pretty good bbq. read more

Yum! Best-tasting BBQ in Columbus. I go for their brisket every time, and it never disappoints. The brisket is so tender, it melts in my mouth. I love the variety of bbq sauces they provide, and their sides are the perfect compliment to the brisket. Mac and cheese, cole slaw, corn pudding, and the list goes on. Most people reviewing this place must have no clue what quality food is. I ate here and it was not hitting on any level. The purpose of barbeque is moist, and tender meat. The brisket and pulled pork i had were both incredibly dry and tough. They were also way, way oversalted and full of fat and grisle. Everything from the meats to the sides tasted of very low quality ingredients. Even the side salad didnt taste well, and i dont even know how you screw that up. I've been around the block enough to know that I was served 2day old food, reheated. EVERY person that worked here appeared to be a teenager, which is never a good sign. They even forgot 1 one our 2 sides and the cornbread, which was awful. The entire meal tasted like cafeteria quality food, leftover, then reheated. Very disappointed. read more

It's hard not to give this place 5 stars. We eat here or get it to go on a regular basis and the food and service is always great. The bbq is spot on, the sides do change seasonally but the favorites stay on the menu during the year, their sweet tea goes so well with the smoked meats, and their desserts are mouth watering. My favorite items are the smoked turkey, corn pudding, Mac and cheese, green beans, and of course the Texas chocolate sheet cake!
