Old reliable. I almost hate myself for loving this place, because it has so many outlets. Almost like the McDonald's of Columbus BBQ. And yet, most of the time when I order BBQ somewhere else, I end up thinking good ole City is better. I usually order the pulled pork or ribs. Both are always juicy and flavorful, especially when doctored with their house BBQ sauce. The portion of meat on their sandwiches is always very generous. The sides are their weak spot - they can be hit or miss for me. But I love the cukes n onions when they have them - I'll get 2 of those as my sides. The cornbread and texas toast is always good, and the kids enjoy the mac n cheese. Also love the music they play at this location. Not sure if they do at other locations as well, but there's something so right about blues and BBQ. read more

The best that Columbus has to offer in barbecue, definitely. City Barbecue, a chain concentrated mostly in Columbus and Dayton, from what I can tell, offers sort of a pan-American style in barbecue. Rather than allying stictly with Texas, Memphis, Kansas City, or Carolina, it does a bit of 'em all. But surprisingly? It does them well. When you go to this small restaurant on an isolated strip of the mall- and big-box-laden Henderson Road in suburban Upper Arlington, you only need to remember two words: brisket sandwich. Their brisket is beautifully smoked to falling-apart tenderness and heaped-- a half pound!-- onto a soft roll. Nothing exceptional-- neither buttery nor flaky; just simple-- but you don't want to deter from the delicious meat anyway. Before heading to your table, ladle yourself a container of warm sweet sauce if, like me, you dig Kansas City's style. Proceed to wolf this sandwich down voraciously. As far as sides, steer clear of the vegetables. You're not going to a barbecue joint for health and, well, City Barbecue just doesn't do collards or green beans right, cooking them to mushy greyness with fatty scraps of ham. Their french fries, however, are fantastic. Crispy, hand cut, lightly salted, and deep fried as they're ordered; always hot and fresh. Similarly delicious is their chili: smoky, bold, flavorful, and filled with huge hunks of meat. A tip: City Barbecue also sells a variety of the sauces available at all the tables. College students? I'm not quite sure what is so wonderful about this place. Maybe I just don't understand BBQ (but I'm pretty sure I like it). Maybe I just don't get meat (even though my family has raised produce for years). Maybe I got spoiled living in St Louis and visiting Kansas City where BBQ is king. I just don't know, but I didn't find anything wonderful about this place. I got my BBQ standard, pulled pork, but didn't get any side dishes because I wasn't really that hungry. The place was busy, really busy, and we had to wait a few minutes for a seat. We also ended up moving seats to a better table after a few minutes when one opened up. They had live music playing that night, which was nice, but it made it a bit loud which wasn't good for conversation. read more

I have never given a review on anything, but the portions for awhile have gotten smaller and smaller yet price stays the same or has gone up. City Barbeque on Henderson Rd has a staff that is second to none with great customer service, friendly and their goal is aimed to please. If you have a concern, they will fix it right the first time. I am a long time customer and don't go anywhere else except for City Barbecue on Henderson Rd. They have THEE BEST Chicken Breast Sandwich. The Chicken Breast is as big as your fist and it melts in your mouth. I get this sandwich 9 out of 10 times when I do carry out. I just love their sides as well, Green Beans with Bacon, Gumbo, Potato Salad, Mac & Cheese, Hushpuppies, Corn Bread etc and it compliments all the great foods on their menu. I grew up in Columbus, but have lived in Texas for the past 25 years. I have eaten my fair share of smoked meats in that time and I am here to say that City Barbeque cooks up some good food. We ordered a two meat family style dinner, which comes with two sides. I pushed everyone toward the brisket, which was cooked as I love it - perfectly smoked, with charred bits still attached and MOIST. I always deduct a Yelp star if the meat is dried out. I understand that it should be well-cooked, but if I wanted beef jerky, I would go to the 7-Eleven. Our other meat choice is the standard Ohio meat: pork. The shredded pork was perfect for sandwiches (they included ample buns) with a bit of their sauces (standard or spicy). The brisket was perfect without any sauce, as it should be. For sides, we chose green beans and mac and cheese. The M&C was nothing special and would not get again. For some crazy reason, my brother ordered a third side: baked beans. Perhaps we was lured in by the mention of chunks of brisket in the beans? I found them to be a bit bland and the beans small. Oh, and the reason for the one star deduction: one additional side cost us $25. I was fine with the price for the family style 2 meat meal ($119), but to charge $25 for baked beans is a bit extreme. I get enough good BBQ when home, but if I am ever home sick for a bit o' que when in CMH, I'll hit up CB for sure. read more

Son David graduated high school this past May, and we held his graduation party in our backyard last night. He was pretty flexible about what he wanted his party to be like, but had three requests: 1) Paint the mailbox....I told him "do it yourself". He did. 2) Grandma's Texas sheet cake...easy called grandma and she was delighted to do it. 3) City Barbeque brisket and pulled pork We were planning for 100 people, so I decided to make the pulled pork and sides and order the brisket from City Barbeque. They only required a couple days notice, had the brisket ready right on time, and gave us tongs and gobs of sauce. It came to $13 and some cents per pound and was packaged very conveniently to serve guests. They didn't take checks, which was a big pain in the butt, because I didn't want to use a card, but overall, it was tasty, easy and not too expensive. read more

After my first less than stellar experience at City Barbeque, I was contacted by the owner Jordan who was quite apologetic and concerned about my experience. In addition to simply ascertaining the issue, Jordan also offered my husband coupons so that we could give City Barbeque a second shot with some other menu items. And I must say that I'm REALLY happy that we did take that second chance because the second experience was so much better than the first one. This time around, I got the brisket, and my husband got the pulled pork. For sides, we got hush puppies, corn pudding, and fries. We both really enjoyed the offerings this time around. I especially loved the brisket. I actually think the fries, as simple as one might consider them to be, were my favorite side out of everything. And of course, my husband loved the corn pudding just as he did the first time. I will say that the sandwich was much heftier than I was expecting it to be, but that is definitely NOT a complaint haha. I do imagine that we'll be returning to this location in the future. Not until I went up and asked did I find out that they were not going to take any orders from customers in line until they "caught up" with the online orders. During our trip to dublin it was getting late and we needed to eat. So we order some Q. Being from the south I have tried a lot of bbq in my travels and this is some of the best I have had. Tried the pulled pork and the beef brisket. The brisket was some of the best I have ever had. Nice bark and very moist and tender and the sauce was outstanding. City Barbeque is the default Columbus BBQ chain, and is immensely popular. I myself am not as rabid about this place as my fellow Columbus denizens, but it's still pretty good BBQ. I really enjoy their pulled meats, and the ambiance is pure BBQ. Is it the best BBQ in town? Not in my opinion. Is it the worst? heck NO- it's good stuff. You won't be disappointed, but don't expect BBQ heaven (Go SOUTH, young man...) My only negative critique would be the ribs, which are usually too dry for my taste, not as tender and fall-off-the-bone as I prefer. read more

I really, really like City Barbecue. It's my husband's favorite BBQ place, so we eat there a lot. They slow cook a set amount of food per day (smoked sausage, ribs, brisket, pork, and chicken), so when they're out, they're out. I am not a huge fan of the ribs because they seem to get overdone and dried out, but their brisket is amazing, and their chicken and pork are nice, too. If you haven't tried the brisket, though, you really need to, and if you're going for the first time, you need to get the brisket sandwich. Trust me. The other truly awesome thing about City BBQ is the sides. They are not one of those places with great BBQ but terrible sides. I will say that I despise baked beans (too sweet! Gross!), but my husband loves their baked beans and gets them every time, so I recommend them for people who like to eat really sweet sides. I love their green beans and their greens (although I add a bunch of vinegar to the greens as they are just a tad on the bland side to me without it). I try not to, but I also order the mac-and-cheese sometimes, because it is cheesy and delicious. It is not nutritious and it's not different from your basic mac-and-cheese, but good for what it is. I also like the cornbread and hushpuppies. I always get the green beans, though, they are extremely good. Dave gets cravings for the brisket and baked beans; I get cravings for the green beans. If you are vegetarian, don't even bother. Some meat-centered places have meat-free sides, but not city BBQ. The greens, green beans, and baked beans all have meat in them. You would be looking at a choice of mac-and-cheese, cornbread, hushpuppies, fries, or salad. They also have some choice of bottled beer and sodas, as well as fountain soda and really good tea and lemonade. It's fun to eat there once in a while, too. read more

Went here last night with the fiance and man what a good bbq joint, especially for something in Cbus, where most ppl probably don't expect good BBQ. I got the small sandwich sampler (brisket, pork, sausage) and 2 sides, my fiance got the full sized pulled pork sandwich, big portions and good flavor in the meat. On the table they have plenty of options for sauce, from the vinegar based to mustard based and everything in between. We will be heading back soon. read more

Been in Columbus a month as a cancer patient at the James and dining out is one of the few pleasures. Soneone at the hospital mentioned City BBQ and we went last week to try the sampler. It had pulled pork, brisket , thigh and leg chicken and ribs. We thought the brisket was too dry but every think else was good. Had baked beans and greens and corn bread which were also good. All and all , good value we took half home with us for a meal the next day and it was a fun atmosphere.. W as fun and casual. I read about the tacos in the Columbus Dispatch so I tried them today at the Henderson Rd Store. Pros: Excellent taste; smoked meat was wonderful; the condiment salsa was very good. Cons: the size was too small; the $9 for the three small tacos was frustrating. I have gotten more meat on a sandwich than I did on my mini taco at less the price for the sandwich. Great concept, but at this price, I will not get this again unless things change. The Fix: use three mid size soft taco shells or even one larger burrito shell. And use the amount of meat you put on a sandwich onto the burrito. An alternative: measure out the same amount of meat on a sandwich and make 4 or 5 mini tacos. Ultimately.......City Barbecue has a great potential product, but for the high cost, I feel like I got ripped off. read more

Still a good choice for bbq based on my location and available options, and while there were a few mistakes recently on my orders- a manager was eager to offer a refund based on the bad experiences even when I did not ask for this. I still think the bbq is good (for the area) and just hope there are improvements on the accuracy of orders. There is a rather rude young female working at the Henderson Rd. location who I've encountered a few times, (on the phone when placing an order) and that warrants the drop in stars also. And really, it makes no sense to continually give me a huge bag of food with no napkins or utensils. Yes, I can put those in the bag, but if time wasn't a consideration I would not have ordered for pick-up. This can be a great place all the time, with some minor corrections. read more

I'm surprised I haven't reviewed City Barbeque before. Definitely one of my favorite restaurants for barbecue. I used to live in New York and Dinosaur BBQ was my spot. After moving to Columbus, I didn't think I'd find another good BBQ place. But I have! City Barbeque is a great place for a laid back, well cooked meal. We typically always get the chicken dinner with sides here but friends have gotten the ribs, brisket etc and I have heard nothing but rave reviews! I was a bit hesitant to try this place because they have multiple locations. I prefer Mom-and-Pop places for my BBQ. I was wrong. Plain and simple, I was dead wrong. I had the ribs and a city sampler platter (not all at one sitting). Ribs, pork, brisket, sausage and turkey. The sausage was a bit nondescript, but everything was really tasty.
