Good meats, POOR service. I have enjoyed their food several times. Dine in and to go. The app for ordering is very useful. Unfortunately, I can't return there anymore. There are folks there who are really trying, I'm sure, but 3 strikes and you're out. There are too many other good and reliable options. I have had 3 separate large($$$) to go orders screwed up over a several months. After the first mistake I began to check before I left. I've never received any apologies or even a notion of responsibility from staff. Their mistake becomes MY problem not theirs. The last and only response I got from staff when asked where the rest of my order was, "I didn't read the ticket" ?!?!?! Then why would you tell me my order is ready? Poor training/poor execution. Any barbecue review needs to start up front with the raison d'etre: the meat. This was our first time there, so we wanted to sample. I was especially interested in the Bama sauce on the pulled chicken, but that's not in any of the combos. So I created my own combo. A pound of the chicken, half rack of ribs, and a "naked" sandwich of brisket with extra ends. (I did my order on line, and it was very easy to navigate the menu. Kudos.) All the meats were excellent. Ribs fell off the bone but still had texture. Chicken moist and delicious, maybe a tad salty but that didn't slow us down. But our favorite was the brisket. Brisket can easily be dry, this was perfect. And the "burnt" ends added yummy crispy bits without a butter burned taste. Divine. Next time I will try the pulled pork. Sides were good but not spectacular. The corn pudding was everyone's first choice. Good fries, good creamy slaw. I thought the vinegar slaw was a bit bland, but many like it that way and it probably goes well on a sandwich. Also, they do fundraisers for nonprofits, so 25% of my bill went to Girls Rock Camp. Well done City BBQ. Plentiful parking, it was easy to pick up my order, and the woman running the register was very careful to ensure my order was right. Was going to eat at another establishment but I smelled the smoke and decided to try it. I ordered the smoked turkey salad which is supposed to be one of the signature items. They were out of Turkey so they asked me if I wanted chicken instead. My wife ordered the rib and brisket platter with Mac & cheese and collard greens. Well... I give them an A for customer service but the items need a little tweaking. The Mac and cheese tasted like craft Mac & cheese(not to say that craft is bad) but when you go to a restaurant you look for more of a homemade taste. The collards taste like they went a little too heavy on the liquid smoke. We told the server and he exchanged it for potato salad & baked beans. The beans tasted a little too smoky as well. The potato salad was good. As for the chicken, it kinda tasted like it was cooked in the oven instead of a smoker. It was weird because the sides tasted smokier than the meats. The brisket was tender and good but still not Smokey enough for my taste. The ribs were a little tough and again not Smokey enough. Funny the next day the brisket tasted more like it was cooked with wood more than the day we ordered it. The dry rub on the ribs was so pervasively salty that it was distracting. If you can manage to get past that you will notice that the meat is essentially flavorless. I guess the only good thing I can say about my meal was the Texas toast was ok. Additionally the entire menu is grossly overpriced given the poor quality of food. I'm guessing that this is due to the fact that it is a nice restaurant and it is in a nice area so I expect that their lease is rather high. But this is no excuse for serving food at this quality at this price. If you have any choice I would recommend you find someplace else to eat. If I could give it zero stars or negative stars, I would. This review may seem a bit harsh but I've actually owned A barbecue restaurant as did my father. This place is a joke. After reading the response by the restaurant, I have this to say... Don't serve shitty food and people won't complain. Great BBQ. Of course during covid the service was altered to be safe and they still did a great job! The food was great. Chicken was really well prepared and the ribs were ON POINT!! This place is awful. Went on a Saturday night with my sister and ordered to go for my husband. First off, if you've never been you have to get oriented to ordering style (it's cafeteria style/fast food where you order and pay for your food and wait for it out the window). The cashier was rude, she literally said dunno to all our questions about the food. As a side note while waiting for our food, a woman brought back her Mac and cheese and green beans sides because she didn't like them and wanted to exchange them. I thought she was being dramatic but would soon see her antics were justified. The food: Pulled chicken= served lukewarm, flavorless, dry. Drowned it in bbq Potato salad=unusually sweet (preference if you like sweet PS) Green beans=salty! Fried cat fish= no flavor. Fried hard, breading was dry Ribs= dry, no flavor If this is too long and you didn't read, at least read this part: DO NOT GET THE MAC AND CHEESE. The M&C is almost inedible. We've deliberately driven past other BBQ places near Decatur to come to City Barbeque, totally worth the drive. I've only gotten the brisket (and I'm not even a brisket girl, but I found it to be addictively good). The hubs got pulled pork the first time, and the City Platter the second time. Pro tip, don't try the City Platter on your own unless you don't plan on eating for a couple of days after. We've also had a bunch of the sides, (collards, green beans, corn pudding, hush puppies), and have been happy with everything so far. Two small cons to this place - no liquor license, yet, and the prices are a bit on the high side. Worth it to me though. 'Cue on people. read more

As I pulled into the parking lot I saw a stream of people entering and leaving the restaurant like they had a buy 1 get 1 deal going on. I just knew I was at the right spot. It took me about 3 mins to look over the menu, which consist of the typical items listed on a BBQ menu: ribs, pulled pork, brisket, pulled chicken, the typical side dishes and dessert. Whats different about this menu is that the items are al a carte. I ordered the half baked chicken, corn pudding- which is very reminiscent of corn casserole, and the vinegar slaw-which taste exactly like cold slaw by the way. I have to be honest....my tastebuds wasn't impressed. There was nothing about the meal that separated this dishes from the other bbq dishes I've eaten in the past. To make matters worse my chicken was dry. I think the fact that I placed my order 20 mins prior to closing may be a contributing factor. My advice is to go during peak hours. The wait might be long but at least you can guarantee the food will be fresh. read more

Wow. This place is great. First, they have really built up the area with stores, restaurants, and residences. Really like the area and what they have to offer. Now, the food was really good. I had the two plate special. Usually, you get a tiny bit of each meat at other joints in town. I was amazed how much they portion out. I got the brisket and smoked turkey breast. The brisket was great, some lean and some fatty. I would say four good size slices. Now, the Turkey stole the show. I've never had white meat turkey taste this good. It was as good as turkey can be. For the estimated time of pickup we were initially given 20 minutes. The second I completed my order my pickup time jumped to 50 minutes. I've eaten here 3 times over a two week period. I'm somewhat of a BBQ snob but I think I have found my new favorite BBQ joint! I've tried the pulled chicken (awesome) mostly because not many places in ATL do a pulled chicken. Tried the pulled pork (was ok, expected more smoke tbh) and the brisket. Now the homerun for me was the brisket! Wow just wow! The only know is their mustard bbq kinda sucks. Their original sauce is great and they have about 6 other flavors but I think I'll stick to the original. Too cold to go out for lunch and DD had free delivery from City Barbecue so what better time to try it! First to figure out the menu, don't bother asking what comes with it because the answer is nothing. When did cornbread and hush puppies become a side item? That's crazy! I talked my coworker out of ordering them because of that too. For my order I had the brisket and got two sides. Mac n Cheese and Collards. My friend that was doing the group order had to tell me to add the Texas toast that most places just include. The order did arrive fresh and hot. The brisket was great taste and not dry even later when I warmed it up. It was a little skimpy compared to my favorite place but hey they don't have delivery. The collards were good with just the right amount of heat, just a tad salty. The mac and cheese is a definite no though. It was a straight up copy of Kraft shells and cheese. I was thoroughly disappointed in this restaurant. The pictures look better than the food actually tastes. I ordered the Bama chicken sandwich with mac n cheese and fries. My fiancé orders their pulled chicken sandwich with green beans and Mac n cheese. The Bama sandwich was okay. The chicken had a little more fat on it than I would like, but it was the only thing that had some flavor. The fries were also okay and had some flavor. The Mac n cheese has no flavor what so ever, except for an after taste of soap. I couldn't even finish it because it really was that disgusting. The green beans also lacked flavor and were disgusting. I also tried the low country mustard base bbq sauce and it was absolutely disgusting. That is not a true mustard bbq sauce at all. Great experience before arriving... I was working at an event at the GWCC and city bbq was handing out samples at the event. My coworker tried a sample and insisted I try one and omg delicious!! Since we were in work mode, we waited til the event was over to get their info. We ended up chatting with the catering manager who was very friendly. Afterwards we decided we were craving more city bbq for dinner so we went for it and were not disappointed. We shared a sampler platter but let me tell you the best was the brisket! Sides were yummy as well. Staff was very friendly and they have a wonderful variety of flavoured sauces you can add on. The catering manager (I cannot recall his name) arrived, saw us and brought us two desserts to split... chocolate cake and banana pudding. Since we were full we each took one home. I much prefer banana pudding over chocolate cake and it was delicious and homemade. How lovely. :) read more

Being a fan of City BBQ this review is difficult to write. But things have deteriorated a bit maybe due to their own success. First, parking is very frustrating. Tiny lot. Lots of circling. No real good options here. Often think about going somewhere else as it can take 15 min to park. Second, they were busy today but service is a bit testy. It's not as organized as it could be so you wait and wait u til you finally have to ask about your order status. Maybe they need a board that shows when order is ready. But no need to get testy with customers. Service is uneven. Three, portions of the meat seem smaller than I remember while portions of sides seem larger. The meat is mainly why we go so they need to be generous on that. Food was ok this time. We switched to here from community BBQ last year. But will probably switch back to see how they compare. While we like many things about City the frustrating parking and testiness of Staff make us want to try something else. There's now Taylor'd in Avondale as well. So we give this visit a 2 which is a big drop off from previous experience. Yes Covid plays a role. However if they don't get the parking situation improved I'm Not sure what the answer is except relocate. read more

This spot is one of my favorite BBQ joints around ATL, in fact I travel 45 minutes to come here and enjoy the atmosphere and most importantly the food... I love the city of Decatur and I often come here for the culture and the food. Very delicious BBQ food and love the mild Smokey texture on the meat without the after taste. I usually get the two meat combo (Brisket & chicken) lean with two sides banana pudding and I alternate the second one. Very reasonable price since the same meal at Jim N' Nick BBQ costs the same but less tastier. Portion size is very generous and can never finish it in one setting. I highly recommend city BBQ to everyone, and did I forget the staff's good attitude?.. I ordered ahead to pickup since COVID times makes it harder to go in/out in less than 10 minutes. BBQ is something I believe everyone (including myself) is very particular about, but I was hard pressed to find anything bad at City Barbeque. Food: To get a sampling of most of the meat on the menu, my wife and I ordered the City Sampler, which comes with brisket, pork, turkey, sausage, and two sides. All the meats were great, and I'm going to call out the sausage because the casing had a great snap to it. I've had smoked turkey before but I usually pick brisket or sausage before it. I love that City Barbeque includes it on the City Sampler because I get to eat it more frequently and other people will learn how good it is! I'm in the camp that BBQ sauce is usually needed because the meat lacks in flavor. Add the BBQ sauce if that's your thing, but the meat doesn't need it at all. Plenty of flavor by itself. For sides we got the baked beans and mac and cheese. The baked beans weren't for me as they were too sweet for my liking, but the mac and cheese was pheromonal! Service: At City Barbeque, you simply order, sit down, and wait for your food to be ready (no server). We went on a Saturday night, so while we did have to wait in line for about 5-10 minutes and 20 minutes for the food (they were slammed), the wait was worth it. The manager (I assume) that was calling out food orders was very polite and courteous to everyone that came up to ask him when their order would be ready. Solid place. Not 5 stars like community or fox, but definitely worth the visit. Portions were large. Nobody in our group could finish. I had pulled chicken and smoked turkey. Both were awesome and went really well with the low country mustard sauce. Corn soufflé was delish. My son had the More Cowbell sandwich. Completely off the hook. The collards greens are the best I've had at any BBQ joint. Plenty of sauces to select from but you definitely don't need them at this place. Top it all off with some dank banana pudding. Glad to see a quality BBQ restaurant open up in the city. I've always defaulted to CommunityQ because they were the only ones that did BBQ well (not a big Fox Bros. fan). It was good going down but once the smoke cleared all hell broke loose. I have the worst case of the stomach flu.
