I really wanted to like this place and have been there three times since it opened less than a month ago. The staff is friendly and everyone is very accommodating but the basic quality of the food is not very good. The brisket I had on my first visit was very fatty. Next visit I ordered the chicken breast/wing and it was much better but there is no uniform portion to this dish. I got a piece that was half the size of the one served to my wife and different from our friend who was with us. I get it. Chickens are not all the same! But that's where quality control comes in. Three people eating the same chicken should be relatively uniform. Last visit we tried the ribs. Really bad. All fat and low quality product. Want this place to improve. Sides are good. I've passed this awesome place many times, But I actually never looked into what the menu would be. Well tonight I decided I want to try it and man oh man am I glad!!! OMG- All I can say is the food is awesome, The guys and ladies who work there are so friendly, And the Girl who took my order- Morgan ( I hope I got that right) was so damn pleasant, She went out of her way to make sure she explained the menu when I asked her questions, I even got a sweet treat to take home; Boy this place is one of the friendliest diner in/or diner out places I've been to in a very long time!! I got the pulled pork with some burnt ends, which was indescribably tender. And then they have such a huge assortment of barbecue sauces that you can take home to add to your meat all in little cups, I ended up taking four different ones- All very good. Now let me get to the Jack Mac; Oh Lordy that macaroni and cheese with three different cheeses on top and then baked to golden-ness I could make that a steady diet seven days a week. And the corn pudding was just the right balance between pudding and corn bread. I ordered my dinner to go, And my husband ended up eating half of what I brought home. I concur with Pamela's review. We did a quick lunch pick up for work & sadly it was a dud. We had a couple pulled pork sandwiches that were basically inedible...it was big clumps of fatty tasteless pork, tough to bite into on a mushed bun. My friend is still talking about the bad Mac & Cheese, hard to be believe it can be screwed up! The saving grace was really the fries! Thick cut & yummy, I'd order them again if I ever happen to go back. With so many choices in the area, I doubt I'll be back anytime soon. read more

Our first visit to City BBQ. On a Friday evening the restaurant was quite crowded but the line went smoothly and efficiently as our carry out order was prepared. One of our sides was omitted so it's important to check your order before leaving. The food was quite good, but note that sandwich buns were small. Along with two sides, it was a filling meal. Cole slaw, beans and Mac and cheese were good, less for the corn pudding. Next visit we will try the ribs and chicken. read more

Tonight I ordered delivery from City Barbecue for dinner. I placed the order on their website, and waited over an hour for the delivery. It never arrived. Unbeknownst to me, they subcontract their deliveries to Doordash, and manager told us that the fact that we never received our dinner "is not City Barbecue's problem. Of course, their website doesn't mention that Door Dash will be doing the delivery, and at no time are you given any kind of tracking number for Door Dash. So when someone decides they're hungry but they don't want to actually pay for it themselves, they can walk into CIty Barbecue, tell them he is "Josh" from Door Dash, and then provide a DISCONNECTED phone number to call with any problems. My particular Josh walked out with I don't know how many orders that didn't get delivered). What I would have expected was for City Barbecue to offer to remake the order or reverse the charge for the meal and delivery. However, they did neither of those things. Instead, they said this this was our problem with Doordash and there was nothing they can do about it. Both the initial staffer we spoke to and the manager were incredibly rude, and we will never order from there again because of the rudeness and lack of customer service. In the end, we are disputing the charge directly with our credit card company because we don't have enough information to do so with Doordash. I am posting this review so that others know to either avoid this restaurant altogether,, or be aware of the risk of ordering delivery. Also, I do realize COVID has caused staffing problems, but my daughter works at Chipotle and she was incensed by the rudeness and lack of customer service! read more

Ordered 2 racks of ribs 4 hrs prior to pickup online. Went to pick up was notified they ran out of ribs but gave me equal amount of chicken. I called and spoke to manager. He apologized and gave credit of rewards for $40. Few weeks later ordered ribs again at 10 in morning to make sure would not get shut out using the $40 credit we had 2 separate accounts and they credited the one we did not use for the order the 1st time. Food was not bad both chicken and ribs. I prefer fall off bone ribs these were kind of tuff and needed to be torn off. Seasoning ryb was good. Appreciated the manager making it right with credit but would have preferred a callback prior to pickup with alternate options so we could have made other arrangements. read more

I love this place. I think it's heads above Urban BBQ in Vernon Hills. Great choices for meat and sauces. The sides are really big and every one is delicious. They've just added Brunswick stew. My complaint is more that we ordered ahead at 5:50 for takeout and were given a pickup time of 6:30. 40 minutes should be an adequate amount of time for a take out order. We ended up waiting another 20 minutes beyond that and walked out with our food at 6:50. Yes, they were busy which I'm sure caused the delay. Being a local resident, I was ecstatic to hear a new BBQ joint was moving into the area so there were months of anticipation for City Barbeque to open. I have now tried it twice and have been underwhelmed both times. I know bbq. I travel for bbq. I smoke my own meats. Their brisket, which should be a top option at any reputable bbq joint, is barely edible. Both times I tried it, the amount of salt is intolerable in the rub and the meat to fat ratio is a bit out of whack. I understand brisket should be fatty but a layer of fat compared to half fat is inexcusable, nor should one have to pay for that. Worse off is the amount of salt in that rub. In fact, most of their meats seem extremely salty including their sausage. Their sides are nothing to boast about either. The Collard Greens have too much pork, the beans are salty and the cornbread is average at best. I do like their fries and cole slaw though so kudos. Finally, serving a Motts applesauce is a bit lazy. If you pride yourselves as classic bbq, then take the time to at least make your own applesauce and not use that generic stuff. I wish them the best, as the area needs better restaurants, but I'll pass. read more

I have loved their food on multiple occasions. Maybe because of the crisis they are using different cooks?? We ordered the Judges Sampler, thinking more food than we need but trying to help them out. It was a mishmash. The ribs were way overcooked with some pieces not even eatable and had to be tossed. The pulled pork and brisket were delicious but each only 1 small serving portion. Not shareable at all! The chicken was 5*. The breads were good. We used the offered delivery system and was not aware of the service fee tacked on by City Barbecue. I wish to share a very unfortunate and frustrating experience I had yesterday at City Barbeque in Deerfield. I called in an order of over $80 dollars at 6:40 with a pick up time of 7:30. Upon arrival I went to the carry out order line and the staff ( who turned out to be the manager) was in conversation with a woman talking about a previous experience in the restaurant. I patiently waited for 5 minutes for the conversation to end, with the manager never pausing to notice my presence. When that conversation ended she said that they were preparing my order. 25 minutes later I was still waiting, watching numerous others pick up their take out. Then, when I thought the order was ready, she said they had to make fries. I patiently waited again. When I expressed my displeasure several times, she apologized and when I asked what she could do for me to acknowledge the exceptionally poor service, she finally provided a family pack coupon. After the 30 minute wait and arriving home, I found a piece of plastic in one of my dishes ( see pic). Plan on certainly following up but wanted to share this regrettable experience. This place was excellent both times I visited. I like the fact that you put your own BBQ sauce on, and they have several to choose from.

I was put off by their opening week promo ( download our app and get $5 off your order, except in addition to downloading you had to activate by linking a credit card, all while standing in line trying to decipher a new menu board, all of which you learned about at the cash register when you were charged full price). An inauspicious opening to say the least. The food was OK, but the amenities need some work. The floor is a disaster waiting to happen. It's slick more than slippery. When I went to sit down my chair slid out from under me. With all the condiments at a central station and people juggling food trays the inevitable food spills require a continuous floor mop. Hopefully someone's around to do that. And with all the condiments in one place there's an unnecessary line before you get to sit down, and the squirt bottles of various sauces squirt out from places they shouldn't making the the condiment station a continual mess. And if once you sit down you want to sample a different sauce you have to start the whole process again. Too much of a hassle for me. I don't think I'll be returning to see if they make any changes. They're a chain after all and if they can't figure out a more pleasant fast dining experience or if their customers don't mind that's OK but do it without me. read more

I can't put my finger on it.... I have ordered take-out from this City BBQ location three times and each time I'm miffed by how good the "Q" is. That being said, it comes as close to home as I've been able to get in the many years I've been away. I'm from Texas and my family takes bbq'ing seriously. I left after joining the Navy and eventually married Navy and moving around so much has left me with disappointed when it comes to bbq cravings. In southern CA, the word bbq seems to bring to mind burgers and dogs. No. And in VA, well...I had my first taste of NC style pulled pork. It's ok, but ....Texas style cooked low and slow wins in my book! At City BBQ, the meat is flavorful and tender. As my father (a native southeast Texan) would put it "it isn't real if the restaurant doesn't have a sawdust floor and a pit out back...". Well, this restaurant does not have a sawdust floor and yet it tastes like the care that has gone into it is that of someone who takes pride in their craft and splits the wood themselves! There is no artificial smoke flavoring or false advertisements of smoke. The smoke and time is apparent in the bark on their brisket. This cannot be created in an oven or without proper rubs and temperature and they are taking the time to do it right, in my opinion. Thank goodness they value their bark and understand that their customers do too! I have gone to other local BBQ restaurants and asked for more of the ends of the brisket just to get it so that there would be flavor and not just the taste of unseasoned meat. I think the cooks (in other places) are keeping it for themselves and not serving it to their patrons or they are not using briskets with a good meat to fat ratio. I can tell that City BBQ understands the value of a proper balance of lean meat and fat! Let's call it what it is. You must have the fat! Without it, it'd be dry and less flavorful. Secondly, I've had bbq meals from restaurants that try to pass off mediocre potato salad, slaw and desserts as something that one would find in a "sawdust" establishment. I've encountered bbq restaurants, particularly in the Chicago area, that are selling Italian style chicken breasts as authentic bbq...no, no no! There is a time and a place for that and if you are marketing yourself as a BBQ establishment, then leave typically "grilled" food off of the menu. There is a difference and grilled and bbq are not the same. The sausage at City BBQ tastes like that which I'd find somewhere around Austin and San Antonio (New Braunsfel's, Elgin, etc.). It isn't the same as a particular kind that I go out of my way to get when I'm visiting...and order for shipping when I'm away, but it is close and that warms my heart! Those who have experienced it know exactly what I'm talking about. The vinegar slaw at City BBQ I'd not had before, elsewhere, but I didn't miss the creaminess of others and loved the delicate nature of it. It is very good! The potato salad is similar to what I'd make and others would question (those not being from SE Texas). Third and lastly...the desserts. I can't give the banana pudding a 5 star, but it is tasty. If it's short-cut by a jell-o pudding mixture and not a homemade stove-top custard, it's not particularly my cup-o-tea, but there is a degree of love that I can tell goes into it that makes it special. And I've bought it more than once so, I definitely like it! The peach cobbler - my God...I just don't know. I've eaten and feel like it's a spoonful of delight. Let's start with the pros. Staff is friendly, restaurant is clean. And the drinks are great. Finally someone local who can brew a real ice tea. My food review. I'm going to say. Fine enough. I had the 1/4 chicken, corn pudding and green beans. Green beans were tasty. A bit salty, but hey there is bacon in this which makes it worth it. The corn pudding wasn't sweet enough. Chicken was very moist, but lacked flavor. I tried three BBQ sauces that I loved. Let's talk about the pickles. Or let's not. A jar from the grocery store shelf would have more flavor than these pickles. BBQ requires a sweet, zesty, crispy and slightly spicy pickle. If this was the only BBQ in town, I'd probably lean toward 3.5 stars. But you can get way better flavor and BBQ at local favorite, Real Urban BBQ. read more
