I really wanted to like this place since it's closeby when I'm out in Deerfield for business but it really isn't that good and it's priced like a normal BBQ joint. I ordered the brisket and it was dry and all the different sauces they provided couldn't mask the dryness (the sauces were pretty good.) My wife ordered the chicken sandwhich and it was also dry. The side of Mac N Cheese was forgettable and I'm not sure how one can mess up Mac N Cheese and the fries were pretty good. I also had the cake which was ok at best. I'm now a two-time City Barbeque customer and I continue to be impressed. The restaurant is clean and well laid out. The staff is welcoming, courteous, clean-cut and knowledgeable. And, the food is excellent! I will say that it's been crowded both times I've been there but the line moves quick and it's always interesting to watch the staff busily working to prepare the meals. They work hard! At most the wait is 5 minutes or so. My family and friends have tried just about everything. We loved the fried pickle chips and the and the cheesy bacon fries as appetizers. My wife really enjoyed her smoked turkey salad and the brisket sandwich on Texas toast was crazy good! My friend had the More Cowbell and is still talking about it weeks later!! Most recently we ordered the Motherload and got it to go and 5 of us could not finish it (its meant for 6 but our boys are big eaters)! Beyond the great food, quality service and incredible staff, this is a place you want to support! I travel regularly on business to this area. I eat there at least once, if not twice, each time I am in town. Was there the first week in March and the first night I ate there the brisket was great - juicy, just enough fat and perfectly cooked! Two nights later I decided to go back and was very disappointed. Brisket this time was overcooked, way overcooked. I got it to go thus didn't let the staff know. If that were to have been my first visit there there is no way I would go back. I have previously eaten at the location in Vernon Hills and the food was very good, but I had an unfortunate experience with poor customer service at this location. Almost 30 minutes after placing an online order via Grubhub, I received a text notification that the restaurant had cancelled my order with no further explanation. This was a bit frustrating because I received the notification about 10 minutes before the food was supposed to be delivered. While I understand that there are a number of circumstances that may require an order to be cancelled, it would have been better customer service to call me directly to let me know, as other restaurants have in the past (even with GrubHub orders). read more

I stopped in this evening on my way home and I have to say I'm pleased . I had the pick 2 meats (1/4 white chicken and 3 ribs ) w/ three sides macaroni, collards and potato salad. The ribs were well seasoned and so tender , all of the sides were delicious. The collards had a nice amount of smoked meat , the potato salad was surprisingly amazing with small pieces of red onion and chunky potato. I was also able to download their app and redeem the $5 off on my first visit. Yes it's true , you don't have to wait for a second visit which I will definitely have . read more

So disappointing!!! We ordered brisket and pulled pork to go with baked beans a little after 6 pm but indicated we wouldn't be there until 7:30. When we arrived we were told that they were out of baked beans and brisket. This is truly bait and switch. We should have been told that they couldn't guarantee brisket would be available so we could plan on something else. For pickup, you don't promise one item and then not have it! My wife and I stopped in for the first time last weekend. All things considered, overall we were disappointed. The atmosphere was O.K., but a bit loud during the lunch hour. The employees were friendly and the service was reasonably quick. So far, so good. I had the pulled pork sandwich with 2 sides, baked beans and fries. My wife had the pulled chicken sandwich. Both of us agreed that the meat on both sandwiches tasted good. There are also different sauces to try. Unfortunately, the buns were either of poor quality or stale. And the sandwiches themselves were very tiny in diameter. That size would be better suited for a children's portion or a sampler plate. Very disappointing. As for the sides. The beans were pretty pasty. Although my wife didn't care for them at all, at least I enjoyed the flavor. And the piece of meat that comes in it was a nice touch. The fries left a lot to be desired. Some of them were skinny burned shoestrings and some others were just burned pieces. We didn't eat very many of them. The concept itself is good and we really wanted it to be better than it was. But for the price and the overall quality of what you get, I doubt we'll be going back. read more

Fries are good just not big enough for large, for all we ordered. Coleslaw was good. Corn bread was just ok bit dry. Loved the baked beans. Also fried pickles were very salty & mushy. As a Texan who has missed good BBQ, I love this place! My husband and I were so surprised when we tasted the chicken, brisket and ribs. Well, it's been a while and I've been back to City BBQ quite a few times. And I'm happy to say that I now like it quite a bit. I think the issues mentioned in the original review were due to the fact that I was there shortly after they opened and weren't exactly up to speed. My subsequent visits were all much better. Food is good, service improved, etc. The back ribs are particularly good, with meat the literally falls off the bone. The pulled pork and brisket are also very good. For sides, I like the potato salad and corn bread. So overall, I'd say it's a big improvement and a good alternative to some of the other places in the area. read more

This restaurant has consistently amazing barbeque. We love all of the meats...pulled chicken, ribs, brisket, turkey. We even bought a turkey breast for Thanksgiving - be sure to order gravy separately. Corn pudding is rich and decadent. Green beans are some sort of extra wide bean cooked with lots of bacon, the flavor is great but they are mushy and over salted. French fries are fresh and delicious. Baked beans are great and have big chunks of brisket in them. Brisket tacos are a winner. Overall the meats are the showcase here and most of the sides are usually too sweet for me. Wonderful. Pulled pork and brisket both fantastic. I find it much more flavorful than RUB. I prefer extra bark on both and you can request lean, extra bark or regular. Green beans w bacon and Cole slaw both really solid sides. Lots of wonderful sauces to choose from as well. read more

Really yummy food. My favorites are the pulled chicken, pulled pork, and ribs. The peach cobbler is also delicious. The baked beans are a bit sweeter than I'm used to, but I've grown to like them. Pretty good. We shared a lot of things, which I'd recommend, so you can taste more! Food takes a while, so be prepared. And, it's pretty new, so it's crowded. The ribs were very good. I liked bbq sauce with them, not the other Montreal sauce I tried. The brisket was ok, but cut too thick. We had a lot of sides: cornbread-very good, pecan slaw-good (healthiest thing we ate), fries-just ok and sort of soggy, mac n cheese-pretty yummy. I was really impressed with the food and service when we dined at City BBQ this past Saturday, 12/11/21. We walked into the restaurant 30 minutes prior to closing. In coming in this late, normally, one expects the staff to be at their end. However, in going to the counter, we were very warmly greeted and the employee, Ryan, gave some really good suggestions as it was our first time there. We were a little apprehensive as to how good the food would be since it was the end of the night. However, it was excellent. The brisket was wonderful as were the sides we ordered, hush puppies and Mac and Cheese. Although the staff was working on cleaning up the restaurant dining area, they were all very gracious and never gave the sense of wanting us to hurry up. Ryan, himself, came to our table a couple times to make sure everything was okay and asked if there was anything else he could do. I noticed he also did this with the other two parties that were still dining. We had moderate expectations walking in and can say that we were floored at the fabulous hospitality and quality of the food. We will definitely be back. read more

First impression walk in the door and order ribs at a barbecue place and they tell us they're out. We order a brisket sandwich and a pulled pork sandwich they were Mediocre at best. I ordered my son the kids mac & cheese and a side salad the salad had a hair in it. This is the second time I've been to this restaurant and both times they were out of ribs.
