I LOVE BBQ. That is why I anxiously awaited the opening of this restaurant in our area. Tonight we tried it and we were NOT DISAPPOINTED . I had the BBQ brisket sandwhich and it was tender, juicy and delicious. My wife had the 1/2 BBQ chicken and it, too was delicious and the portion was big enough for 2 meals. The sides also were generous and tasty, however, the green beans were the exception. The staff was friendly and very helpful. Because it is still the grand opening month, they kept bringing free stuff to sample. The sample rib was tender and delicious and my wife, who is a French fry afficianado, stated that the fries were perfect. Very disappointed with the brisket sandwich if this is what they put in their sandwich don't see how long they can stay in business ..most of the the pieces of brisket was fatty and unable to eat!!! And left not much brisket to eat since they put hardly any in the sandwich!! And very slow waited a long time just to order they only had one person taking orders .. went there again yesterday brisket was way too smoked cut too thick bun was too small more like for a mini sandwich !!!!! City barbecue gets it wrong everytime. At first it was our fault because the website was hard to use so we messed up. The second time we ordered they forgot all the sauces. The third time we ordered knowing they might mess up, we asked an employee if everything was there. They looked and said yes. We came home and all the fries were gone. And the fries are good so we were very mad. It's a little over-the-top and outrageous that the employee said everything was there, and yet one of the main parts was missing. We should have waited longer to let them get their kit together as almost every one of the 7 items we ordered was not up to the hype the venue has been getting. Despite pre-ordering well in advance, we waited 20 minutes past our quoted pickup time. Since it was our first time we ordered a variety of items to sample - none of which we would order again. Let's start with the pulled pork while generous in portion was overly salted and fatty with accompanying buns less than remarkable in quality. The Chicken dry, Corn Pudding tasted like they used old corn and re-heated it once too often, the Mac (over cooked) & Cheese was gooey in texture and flavored with perhaps a pimento processed cheese product, the Corn Bread was actually more cake like in texture, the Peach Cobbler was overly heavy on an artificial almond flavoring and a soggy mess. Four of us gave these items a try and ended up throwing much of it away. This is not a go to Chicago BBQ joint. Very disappointing. read more

Best potato salad I've ever had! Still thinking about it. We tried the Motherlode platter and especially loved the turkey and BBQ chicken, while the ribs, brisket, and pulled pork were very good as well. The baked beans are excellent, love the bits of brisket in them. Cornbread is not dry and has the perfect amount of sweetness, which is how I like it. Love that it doesn't have bits of corn in it. Both times we've done carryout here, there was an issue with the order. First time they accidentally dropped the platter on the floor. Second time, the cornbread wasn't ready yet. But in both instances the manager offered me free sides! Can't complain about that. I highly recommend this place and I hope it stays here a long time. read more

It pains me to say this, but this place, which started off with such promise, is rapidly spiraling downhill. What were cute little glitches and inconsistencies at first are now potential deal killers. I've been here 5 or 6 Times now since they opened and have experiences: a plastic bag in my coleslaw, multiple mixed up orders, a brisket sandwich that was 75% fat, a sandwich that had about 25% the meat it should have, a cashier who literally did not know the menu, a botched takeout order... I think everyone means well and the (very young) staff seems to be friendly enough but the execution and consistency is lacking. Take Portillos, just down the road-- CONSISTENCY, CONSISTENCY, CONSISTENCY. You know EXACTLY what to expect EVERY visit. CB has a long way to go. I have been going to City BBQ since it opened. For me it is a great place for BBQ. Their lunches are a little more expensive than a typical lunch place but their food and service are far above other places. Compared to other BBQ places their prices are great. I have tried a variety of their meats and they are all very good. Not to much smoke with great flavor. Their corn bread is outstanding. Like nothing I have had before. If you want great BBQ with sauces that match go to City BBQ. Just wish they had one closer to home. read more

It's an alright place for bbq, but there are definitely some better choices. The service here was not that great and I told the guy at the counter that I was eating there and it was accidentally packed to go so I had to eat there from inside a container and it was not as pleasant. The bbq sauces were not amazing, but it was good, just nothing special. I tried a little bit of everything with the ribs, brisket, bbq chicken, cornbread, green beans, and baked beans. The ribs are chew-off-the-bone, so not my preferred tenderness, but they were alright tasting. The brisket had good flavor as well, but it was a little dry. The best meat hands-down was the bbq chicken with it having great seasoning and super tender and juicy. The green beans just tasted like mushy broken-up beans that were sitting in salt water. The baked beans were decent, good seasoning, but nothing special. The cornbread was good, but also kind of dry. Nothing memorable here, but it's decent for bbq in the area. read more

This will be a downgraded review for City Barbeque. In contrast to my prior review for our dine in experience, this time we ordered for takeout. The order was for two different styles of pulled pork sandwiches and some extra Mac and cheeses. First disappointment was the size of the sandwiches. They were not that much bigger than a $1 McDonalds hamburger. Second disappointment was the amount of meat on the sandwiches. Not as much as one would expect for the price paid. Final disappointment was that the two sandwiches were not marked as to which was which so we had to guess. It wouldn't have taken much effort on their part to indicate which was the specialty sandwich. All things considered, $30 for two undifferentiated pulled pork sandwiches with included sides plus some extra Mac and cheese did not seem worth it. May not be back. Our Son and Daughter in law who live in Dayton, Ohio took us to their nearby City BBQ a few years ago and we go there nearly every time we visit them. Well last night was our first visit and, let me say, I was impressed. My wife ordered a pulled pork sandwich that she said was "simply incredible" as well as 2 bbq ribs that were offered on special for either $1.25 or $1.75 apiece. When we got the food to our table we found that they had actually put FOUR RIBS on her plate! As for myself, I ordered a "City Sampler" knowing that I'd be bringing leftovers home for another (or several other) meals. Here is where it gets interesting...... I decided to eat mine WITHOUT ANY BBQ SAUCES! The reason being that BBQ sauce can cover up a multitude of sins when eating meats. They can mask a lesser quality of meats, too much fat, or simply meat that is not flavorful standing on its own. All the various cuts that were presented on my sampler plate were OUTSTANDING! My first taste was that of the Turkey Breast. It was simply the best turkey I have ever had. Moist, thick, tasty and tender. I hope they have plenty for take out at Thanksgiving. Each of the other meats were equally excellent. As I predicted, there was too much on my plate to eat at one meal, so we brought home leftovers a second round tonight. After reading this you might wonder why I gave City BBQ only 4 Stars instead of 5. The reason is simple. I reserve 5 Stars for only truly fine dining establishments where one is served on tablecloths with linen napkins, the waitstaff wear suits or vests with ties. Places where service is of the highest caliber. City BBQ is not one of those places but if you want really excellent barbecue, you really should give them a try. read more

Tried City Barbeque for the first time last night. I love Texas BBQ and hoped I would find a place to get it locally. The menu was great and the service was cheerful and helpful. The brisket sandwich looked like it came from Dallas. Unfortunately, it was too salty to eat and I threw it out. The beans which are made with the brisket were also very salty. We visited City BBQ right when it opened and now frequently dine there. Staff is consistently friendly and the bbq and sides are delicious. The one time we carried out for Ravinia and we were delighted with the care that was taken to include the plates,napkins and cutlery. Went there ordered the sampler, got home the turkey was pink and had a horrible fowl odor, called up and talked to the manager. He said that he gets 3-5 calls per week complaining about this, but claimed that that's the way its smoked. My cat walked away from the food, that's how bad it was. 3to 5 people per week is over 200 complaints a year, and that's ONLY the ones who called, I'm sure its way more. My dad and I went here for dinner on Friday around 5:30. There was a five minute wait but once we got up to the register the cashier was friendly and explained the menu to us. We ordered two of the City Sampler which included pulled pork, turkey, sausage, brisket, and sides. We only waited about 10 minutes until our order was called. While waiting, we filled up on the eight different bbq sauces (all really good!) and fresh pickles. Overall, the meats were pretty good although the turkey didn't seem too special. Collard greens, Mac n cheese, fries, and green beans were all served in very generous portions and we even had enough to take home for later. Would definitely recommend- the line was to the door by the time we left at 6. read more

Enjoyed this new bbq place. The prices were fair the service was good. The brisket was excellent, ribs just OK. Sides were good portions and tasty. Especially enjoyed the option of having the brisket on Texas Toast as a sandwich. One suggestion for management: The floor is really slippery - not sure if that was a recent cleaning or the type of flooring. We were fine, but it could cause a fall at some point. We have eaten here twice in the first week they have been open. I don't think we will be able to sustain that pace but I kind of wish we could! So far we have tried the brisket, pulled chicken, sausage, barbecue chicken and pulled pork. It is hard to name a favorite. For sides we have had the mac & cheese, fries, baked beans, corn pudding, corn bread, green beans and potato salad. The only one that was not to our liking was the green beans. Service was friendly and pretty quick given the large crowds each time. The atmosphere is nice too. Give it a try-I am sure you will like it! read more

Terrible service. This was our first time there and never again. One and done ! The kid at the register was the worst didn't say hello and could clearly see we had never been there - 47.00 dollars later for two meals - who knew no sides are included and then I politely inquired because it seemed kind of expensive for what we had ordered and this lovely teenager response - ya no sides! My husband paid said thank you and this kid did nothing other than mumble something and what seemed like a laugh - fine I got past that- we sit down floor so sticky I almost lost my mind but stayed despite my hatred of this place. The final clincher since I completely ordered wrong was I had to stand at the counter and wait to catch the young girls attention because that great kid at the register was to busy chatting up with his buddies and just ignored me- so I finally got her attention and when I politely asked for a plastic container because I had enough brisket left over to feed a family of 4- her response was you need to use the box - we don't give out plastic containers they are too expensive- my jaw dropped - they just charged me 47.00 for self serve -seriously. At this point there was no kindness or politeness left in me- I sarcastically asked if the bags are not given out either. The sides FYI were at best disgusting -while just my opinion the Mac and cheese was cold and the corn bread was gross- I've never had a corn bread I didn't like. And...you clean up after yourself which is fine, but I can say with 100% certainty these lazy people don't clean these tables since I had to grab a napkin with water to clean ours!!!
