New location in Northeast Raleigh. Nice, open space inside, and of course everything is spiffy because the location is brand new. I've been to their Cary location, and wasn't too impressed with the food since some of the meat was a bit dry. This time it was considerably better. Had the pulled pork and sausage, with side of mac and cheese, corn bread, and banana pudding for dessert. The meat had good flavor, and the mac and cheese was very cheesy. Had to save the banana pudding for later due to the large portions. Prices are a little bit more expensive than the little local old-timey places, but just by a little. I went to this location yesterday. I was VERY DISAPPOINTED in the level of service received. I needed to feed a HUNGRY family. I went and ordered the items I KNEW would satisfy our dietary needs. I spent OVER $50 to find out the order was INCORRECT...HOW DISAPPOINTING. When your family is hungry you need the food, hot, fresh and CORRECT. The Manager asked did I want to come back to get the pulled chicken INSTEAD of the pulled pork I received. Of course it wasn't worth it. My family just "made do". After living around the corner from this place for several years and having a sample size of no less than 10 visits across that time span, its time for my official review. This place has gone downhill at an accelerated pace over the past two years. It went from having some borderline impressive quality southern BBQ to the equivalent of a millennial getting a pellet smoker and experimenting on a brisket on his apartment porch. Dry, flavorless and quite frankly soulless. The past THREE times we have ordered from them, including last night, they have left MULTIPLE items out of our order. Last night, they forgot not only the cornbread with our "city platter" (a 4 dollar upcharge) they also left off a lemonade they charge 5 dollars for and to add insult to injury, they gave us not a single drop off sauce (which was requested and appeared on the recipet staples to the bag) of any type for this unsavory platter which contained 4 dry ass smoked meats. Not that upset though. It was so garbage even drowning it in sauce could not have saved it. I ordered the burnt ends the time before which used to be an off menu item. What they gave me could not have been further away from what burnt ends are, tough as shoe leather and flavoress. If you want some basic bitch dry ass sorry excuse for southern BBQ. Def go spend $75 here for a meal that will leave you disappointed and wondering how in the name of christ this place charges these prices for this level of quality. read more

I've been to this City Barbeque location a few times now and I have not been disappointed yet! We always get our food quickly and they never skimp on the amount of food they give you. I typically order the brisket sandwich with a couple of sides, but I never come close to finishing it all and love bringing my leftover sides home. I really like the baked beans with brisket and their corn pudding. But most recently I tried their season sweet potato casserole side and I would loveeeeeee it if they made it permanent! Pretty please? I've also tried their mac and cheese which is good for picky eaters and their fries are tasty as well. The brisket here has never failed me either. It is always super tender and you really don't need to put any sauces on it. BUT they do have a great sauce selection for all tastes. They have sweet, vinegar, mustard, and spicy sauce. And even a Cheerwine sauce and an apple-bbq sauce! Seriously, there is something for everyone! Make sure to download the City Barbeque app and you can get some discounts through it. Service fine enough but everything felt chaotic--getting squeezed out of the fountain drink area by people buzzing around, constantly getting up and down from my table realizing we were missing something--forks, condiments, straws, etc. I'm no stranger to fast casual, order at the counter type places, but something about the layout here didn't work well. I ordered the sides platter and it came in three cups on a tray. I found it awkward to scoop out the food without it spilling all over. A plate would have worked better since this was not a to go order. Macaroni and cheese was ice cold so I went up and requested another. Thankfully, that was brought to me quickly. I love this location! Great and friendly staff, clean restaurant, and excellent food. My favorite items are the burnt ends and the jacked mac (which is the best non-homemade mac and cheese I've had from a chain). Aside from the seasonal items, the brisket is fantastic and the peach cobbler is SOLID. Honestly, I haven't had a bad item from the menu yet. Lastly, the staff has always been kind and courteous to me. I'd highly recommend! Last note: they might have the best sweet tea in the area! This place is a good choice if you're nearby. Easy to order online, so many sauce options, and the sides are great (esp the hush puppies). The lunch sandwich is a perfect size. I don't know if I would go out of my way for it, but it's great if you're looking for something local! I was in and out quickly, and my lunch was quite delicious! The manager provided ample barbeque sauce to go with my meal as well. My lunch was VERY filling (I have leftovers!) Overall impression: just "okay"... The service was pretty mediocre. We visited on 4/28 around 8pm. The girl at the register wasn't incredibly friendly or helpful. We mentioned it was our first (and now only) visit and we might need a minute but she didn't ask if we had any questions or attempt to make any suggestion- actually, she didn't say anything until we started ordering and she asked what sides we wanted and if it was to-go or dine-in... other than telling us our total, that's all she said. Other staff members seemed pleasant enough (they were smiling at least) but we had no interaction with them. The food was just okay. The ribs and chicken were cooked very well, but had little flavor. The pulled pork was a bit tougher than what I expected as well, and we weren't impressed by the sauces. Mac, beans, and slaw were good. The best part was honestly the cornbread. We used to love going here but the last 3 visits to this restaurant over the past 6 months were quite disappointing. We chose to eat in their dining room and every time, all the tables were dirty. I don't mean just the tabletops either. Seats were covered in old crumbs and used napkins, floors under tables were filthy. I know a lot of restaurants are understaffed right now but still feel like a wipe-down and sweeping should be done on a more regular basis. read more

Their food is excellent but the curbside and pickup service is awful. It took 30+ minutes from the time I ordered until I got my order. The order was only a sandwich and a couple of sides. I had chosen curbside pickup and after waiting 10 minutes from the time I arrived, no one came out with my order. I went inside and was ignored by the staff as I continued to wait. Finally an employee asked if I needed anything (after helping three other people who came in after me) I told them I was waiting on a curbside pickup order. It turns out my food had been sitting out already done and getting cold and no one bothered to bring it out to me. I am not the only person this happened to today. There was another person still waiting in their car after I came out with mine. Beware ordering curbside or pickup orders from CityBBQ, you will feel like a low priority to this restaurant. Update: A little over 48 hours after I contacted the restaurant, they reached out to me to apologize and tell me some of the steps that they are putting in place so it doesn't happen again. The steps included informing their staff that food for curbside pickup should be a priority so that food does not get cold and a couple other items. I appreciate them reaching out to me and working on the issues so that they don't happen again. read more

I'm catching up on my reviews, so I'm sorry about the late review... Ordered the meal for 4 (I think it's called), to go. After some bragging from a friend of mine about the corn pudding, i could not wait to try it! I got home, and that was the first thing that I opened. Yeah, it had corn, and looked to be curdled. There was not pudding consistency at all, just very greasy glops of corn goo! The BBQ tasted very good, had a good smoke flavor. This is the part that horrifies me! I put the rest in the fridge, when taking the BBQ out the next day, it was a solid block of pork fat, embedded with BBQ. So, now I know why their BBQ is moist, they must saturate the meat with the pork fat / rendering / grease, that literally seals it in fat, giving it moisture when hot. That is disgusting, not to mention deceptive as to your ability to make moist BBQ. I have NEVER experienced the amount to fat that was solidified on cold BBQ, in my lifetime of eating BBQ...ever. Bag of buns, yup, they gave me the bag... that's ok, except for that it had a huge hole ripped in it, and was covered in probably pork grease. Not good to handle, and not appreciated when trying to deal with everything in the bag, as I had to wash up after touching.
