We went to City BBQ tonight to try the new crispy baked potatoes. It was a joke! I ordered a plain potato, with butter on the side. My husband got one with pork. When it came out, I had a half of a small potato. Looked like potato skin with about an inch of potato attached-no butter. I took it up to the counter, she informed me that's the way they do it--a half of a small potato---that is not a baked potato!!! She offered to bring out the other half, to which I said, YES! What a huge disappointment-and of course it looked nothing like the picture. My husband says his was ok-and for some reason had more potato ‍. Ok, the City Barbecue near my house hurt my feelings because I don't recall seeing an announcement in my email, warning that they were being demolished for reconstruction. I had to find out while driving by and screaming like a little girl upon that shocking discovery. Well, I DID get an email a few weeks later, offering me $5 off to visit another location in its absence. Which I did. Although there was a line, it moved quickly and the young lady at the register was exceptionally kind. I ordered my traditional sausage dog and potato salad. I don't know what I can say that is different from my old review of my 'home' location, but their sausage is definitely worth the price of admission. It has a nice kick to it, enhanced by the grilled sausage and onions that request be added. Surround that with Texas Toast for bread and you've got a hit. And if you know me well enough, aftertaste can make or break a deal. Of course, I click the "Yes" box on that one. Passed with flying colors. Their potato salad is easily the best I've ever had, at ANY restaurant. I've been known to go through there just to get that side item in a larger container. This visit was no exception. I've been here several times and have enjoyed each visit. The staff is very patient and helpful to me. I like to try brisket mac and cheese wherever I go, so they suggested that I get a half pound of brisket and a quart of mac and cheese and combine them. My friend and I split it and we added the sauces and pickles from the self-serve counter. As most times when lunching with this particular friend, we were there for two hours. I watched the lunch crowd come and go and the staff industriously cleaning the dining room. When we made our way to the exit, the entire team behind the counter said goodbye and waved. So friendly! Check out the patio too. Even though it borders a busy street it is still a pleasant place to sit. By the way the brisket mac and cheese was better the next day as the flavors melded together nicely. read more

This place is great especially for take out. This was a last minute idea as neither one us us wanted to cook so we ordered dinner to go. Registration and ordering on the website was pretty user friendly. Have to look around a bit and decided what we wanted. Just a note, for the 1/2lb of meat, it is an option under the Meats by the pound. Ordered 1/2 lb of pulled pork with original BBQ, and a 1/2lb of beef brisket with original BBQ for a variety. Also added a quart of green beans with bacon and scheduled a pick up time. Arrived and food was ready on time. Checked the bags and everything was included. I did ask to add to another BBQ cup as only three were there for the two of us and those are pretty small. The food did not disappoint and was so good. Easy process. Good food and food experience. Went here last night (Friday) at 6pm. As soon we walked in was met by the cashier stating we are out of everything except turkey. There were about 6 people back in the kitchen area working. So I'm not sure if we were discriminated against or what, but I'll never go back there. I've been a fan of City BBQ since I first tried them at a food truck at the Westerville Arts Festival MANY years ago - before their first Westerville area location on Cleveland Avenue - just south of I-270. Their current location (over 5 or 6 years now) at State and Schrock makes it a lot more convenient to enjoy their food. This is one of those places where you order at the counter and then wait for your order to be ready. You carry it to your table yourself. Most of the beverages are self-serve (beer and bottled sodas excepted). There is a a condiment station where you can add pickles, onions, etc. to your BBQ. I've never had a bad meal here and I've tried a variety of their BBQ products - both naked (without a bun) and as a sandwich. I'm disappointed that they've dropped their gumbo from the menu - it was always excellent. If you're into BBQ - I highly recommend City Barbeque. read more

Stopped in to my local City Barbeque today. Greeted by DeJuan the Manager. He's been with them for around 13-14 years and definitely knows his barbeque. Everyone here is super friendly and helpful. Ordered the sausage, baked beans, corn pudding and potato salad. The sausage is a coarse ground with a great casing to it, put it on grilled Texas toast and some Fire BBQ sauce and Yummmy. Beans are made with a nice thick sauce and chunks of brisket. Delicious!! Corn pudding is off the chart, no one else makes it. Then there is the Potato Salad, Yummmy, it is made with mayonnaise, red potatoes, celery and onions. Some of the best in town. If you haven't been to this location, check it out. We were at the City Barbeque in Westerville today. They are feeding veterans today in honor for their service to our country and keeping it truly the land of the free and home of the brave! John enjoyed his meal today including his choice of sandwich and two sides and a drink. I ordered a beef brisket sandwich. I was very disappointed with my sandwich however. Johns sandwich was loaded with a meaty portion and mine was the fatty end of a brisket with very little meat. I would normally have returned it to the counter. But they were so crowded with people all over the place and I wasn't able to stand long enough to fight the crowd once again. I'm sorry that today's adventure here wasn't the best that I have had here. I understand that it was a really busy day but everyone, whether you were a veteran or just a normal customer should be given their best service. Consistently good. Occasionally very good bordering on excellent. A reliable place that rarely has issues. The enclossd picture is not their highest mark. The brisket was flaky and flavorful if dry. The ribs fared better but needed apparatus (teeth) to get the meat from the bone. The cornbread was just sweet and tender enough and the fries are average fare. The protiens are generally well handled here and my plate tonight is an exception to what is tender and juicy goods. I live a few hours away but I still stop here. Probably will in the future. Best BBQ? No. Good BBQ? Yes. I usually get the ribs, but they have a new "chipotle pulled rib" sandwich so I tried that. The large order is two sandwiches, both on those New-England-style hot dog buns. Stuffed full of tender, saucy meat, they were darn good. Just a little heat, building slowly, and some decent smoke flavor. For the sides I had my usual collards- better than Ray Ray's, in my opinion, and very meaty as well; plus corn pudding, a family favorite. Sort of a cross between cornbread and stuffing, I guess. Plus some sweet, sweet tea. How could you pass that up? Sometimes I get a gallon to go. Prime location, good (but minimal) service, good food. Purists will scoff, but it is good bbq, and it is open when you want it, not just on weekends. This location is situated on the corner of state street and schrock road in Westerville. You can access from state street in the Wal-Mart entrance or off schrock in between the bank and Chinese restaurant and Taco Bell. I have not been to city barbeque in probably 6 months but I was happy to see some updates to their menu. Now you can actually order 2 different kinds of meat with 2 sides (this is a great option for me2 people looking to share and cut down cost) this totaled to $18 including tax (we added 2 drinks as well) They also have additional sampler options which allows you to taste all the meats. Finally, right?! I am on a paleo diet now so this place I can actually eat at. I ordered the turkey it was perfectly moist. Husband ordered the second meat of 3 ribs (they were huge!) The greens as a side and we also ordered corn pudding (while I cannot eat that my husband raves about it) Love the atmosphere. Love the signs on the walls. Reminds me of the BBQ spots in Texas. But pretty impressed city BBQ has stepped up their game and changed their menu. Allows you more options and more meat. Wahoo! read more

I feel like I'm being really fair by giving this City BBQ location a 3 star review even though I was leaning more towards a 2 star. I met some friends here last Saturday for a casual gathering and the line was long only because it was Veteran's Day. That wasn't the issue as to the food itself. I've experienced much better City BBQ quality without a piece of hair in my brisket sandwich. That was the real turn off of my entire experience there. The only reason I gave them the extra star is I because after I decided to download the City BBQ app they offered me a free drink and a chocolate cake for my birthday. My husband said the chocolate cake was delicious after a few days of eating it. I guess I would need to come back again to see if the experience gets any better. If you are on a keto diet like my family, City Barbeque is an excellent option. It's easy to order low-carb here... just get any of their amazing meats without any sauce. Rest assured, they are still very tasty with no sauce! Or you can get it to go and add a low-carb sauce of your own at home. I've even added just a little butter and it's incredible! They do have a couple of sides that look to be keto-friendly (based on the titles): Green beans with bacon, collards with pork, and side salad. We haven't actually tried any of these. We typically just order a variety of their tasty smoked meats by the pound and take them home. If I had to pick just one, I would say their pork is the best. It's so good! I was greeted immediately and placed my order which came out in no time. I had to go lite with a garden salad and a side of brisket, but wow, so flavorful.
