Beer only review. May return for food to give a more thorough review and a second chance on beer. Pros: male bartender was really nice, has potential Cons: Beer The beer was average at best and not good at worst. We tried several different brews and none of them really made us want another sip. They had a pretty diverse beer selection. I guess this can be good but I'd ratger see them really dial in. Beers that sounded like hop bombs were pretty subdued. There was a stout (brewed with mushrooms I believe) which was uninspiring. We each ordered one beer out of respect and left. The service wasn't very good. There were a few female bartenders who were either new or just not the best; however, there was also a 30 something guy who was really cool and helpful. Decor is pretty nice! I'd like to scope the ambiance at a busier time because I feel it could be a great place to hang. In closing, based on my experience I wouldn't go back, but with the rave reviews and promising food I kind of want to reassess. Maybe it was a bad night. read more

We held our daughter's wedding at City Built and couldn't imagine a better experience. It was a small wedding (needs to be for CBB) but they rolled out the red carpet and treated all of us like VIP's! The staff is amazing, helpful and enthusiastic. They allowed us to adjust the meeting room according to our needs and taste. They helped set up the brewing room so it could be the venue for the actual ceremony. The food was fantastic and the price was more than fair. Can't say enough good things about these good people! read more

Love this brewery! The food is incredible. Yucca fries and the fried plantains appetizer were tasty. The taco lunch special is a great deal. Puerto Rican rice was so good. City Built it a newer brewery in Grand Rapids. I was drawn there by there Puerto Rican food menu. The beer list did not excite me that much. But twist my liver, I'll go for it. I started with the Crystal Sesh; a session IPA. not at all impressive. It tasted like an extract homebrew, no balance or likable character. Next was the Chaga Kahn Imperial Stout, brewed with Chaga mushrooms that are said to be relaxing and of medicinal qualities. Very fine beer, earthy, woody, nice balance. The Black IPA is good and assertive equally tasty. Flower Power Pale was the big surprise. I would not have tried it. It is brewed with green tea and has a fantastic green tea, almost kombucha quality. Very good. The double IPA is also very good, earthy and fruity. The food was fantastic. The beer cheese was some of the best I have had, the salsa sweet yet assertive. The Camarones Mofungo delicious as well as the Jibarito de Barbacoa, braised beef cheek on a mashed plantain bun. The braised pork shoulder tacos are also very notable. I will be back. read more

A contemporary take on Puerto Rican food. The Bori balls appetizer was tasty, especially with their sofrito cream which was used up quickly. But for the main course, I ordered the Jabarito de bistec, the 2018 Grandwich winner, and was excited to taste the reason they won...only to feel at a loss. The beef was cooked well and the plantain sandwich pieces were good, but it fell completely short on flavor. Overall, nice atmosphere, but food was only okay. read more

There's a lot to love about City Built Brewing. In the crowded craft brewery space in Grand Rapids, they've managed to carve out an identity. First, the space is absolutely beautiful. It is airy and bright and brings the outside in. The downside to that airiness is that it is loud (my most frequent complaint about Grand Rapids eateries). Second, the food. It's Puerto Rican! Not Mexican, not burgers, not pizza. They aren't afraid to make it spicy either! Third, their happy hour is one of the best in the city. Last but not least, the beer is really really good. I like that there is bike parking out front. Grand Rapids is a perfectly sized city for biking and it's nice to see businesses encouraging two wheeled transportation. I cannot speak to the beer (I'm not a beer drinker) but the food was great! I had the 'fresh ass salad' and it was large and filling. Salsa was excellent (hot is HOT!). Went on a Wednesday night with a group of 8 and the wait was about 15 mins for a table. The group hung out at the bar for a drink while we waited. We were without kids but they have a fantastic kids corner with chalk and legos etc. my biggest hang up: they don't have a full bar (beer, wine, meads only). Would definitely return. I wish I had pictures...but here is why I do not! First--they make a seltzer (lime flavor profile) and they will flavor it to your liking! I had a difficult decision on my hands...but he said Mango was the most popular so, a Leming I became. It was GREAT! We ordered their beer-cheese! Who knew that beer-cheese and carrots would make me as happy as it did?!? We also ordered Yuca fries! Y'all these were OUT OF THIS WORLD GREAT! Seriously! We were so happy As we ordered dinner--the server asked me what salsa I wanted for my Shrimp with pineapple slaw tacos...and knowing we were in MI and being from NM...I totally asked for the hot! Holy and colon cleanse. It was a mango salsa--which paired brilliantly with my pineapple slaw...but DANG! Puerto Rican food about killed this gringa from the southwest! My dinner mates ordered the spicy chicken chili--and they mentioned a few times that it had a PUNCH! Okay...before I lose my Chile License...y'all it was SERRANO PEPPER HOT! And because I am cocky, I asked our cute server how the Michiganders did with the heat...he replied that the chicken chili was a staple of the staff AND the "regulars"! The mild salsa was often preferred over the hot (totally different salsas--mild is a tomatillo/avocado base and the hot is a tomato base salsa...not comparable, but both really goOd!) but the hot was ordered with enough regularity they make it every other day. Alright, Grand Rapid inhabitants...you are A-OK in my book! You have great beers and eat some spicy foods...I'll be back to visit for sure! I recently took my friend here for a low key bachelorette dinner and was blown away. She enjoys the beer, I didn't have anything to drink. Being from Puerto Rico, she was eager to have me try foods she grew up with. She ordered some appetizers, and I had to restrain myself from eating all of it. I got the chicken entree, I don't recall the name. When it got to the table, I had to recheck the menu because they gave me so much food! I pulled the bone of the chicken thigh and it the meat just fell off. I don't think I've ever had chicken as good as I had here. She got a seafood dish and says she always orders it. I had plenty to take home, which my partner appreciated. I'd recommend this place to anyone and everyone!!!! read more

I really wanted to love City Built. Many people suggested that we visit. Reviews were either HOT or COLD. I'm in the middle. The chicken salad-hummus combo was tasty and at $10 a generous serving. The customer next to us had the Sunday Special of steak and eggs, also $10. We could not resist and WOW! A 5oz portion of flank steak seasoned perfectly, potatoes and 2 eggs Sunnyside was a delicious bargain. Now for the beer. We tried all 6 IPAs and a porter. Sadly, Not one of them was worth ordering again. Keep the chef and find a new brewmaster. read more

It's more like 3.5 stars. I loved the decor, cleanliness and sour beer options. The food is Puerto Rican inspired. The pork tacos had good flavor, but only one shell. Really? As soon as you picked it up the juices from the meat made the shell fall apart (that's why most places double up). The other issue is that there where only two servers for the whole restaurant. It's a big place and it was pretty busy. We waited a long time in between times that our server stopped by. We quickly learned to ask for drinks before our were empty because we didn't know when we would see our server again. It wasn't his fault, he did as best as he could given that he probably had 10 tables. We'll probably try this place again, but not for a little while. Great new brewery in the GR area and close to Downtown. If you are doing a brewery tour its very easy to get to. The food is delicious. The appetizers are different and the tacos are amazing. Standing ovation!!! It was absolutely amazing food. I had the lechon torta, strawberry saison beer, tostones. It had great Puerto Rican flavor. I also highly recommend the pastelillos. A "torta" is a fancy word for sandwich. Lechon is pulled pork, and the sandwich (i had to eat open-faced as it was way too full/tall to put in my mouth) had a yummy white sauce, onions, red peppers, shredded carrots, and even water chestnuts! Together, the combo was incredible!! The reviews say not kid friendly. I disagree wholeheartedly. My 5 year old had a great time. They have a chalkboard & toys for kids, and a yummy kids menu. We live 4 hours away, but will absolutely be back. One of the owners came out to meet us, being fellow Boricuas, and was personable, down to earth, and making us feel special and appreciated as customers. This place is a keeper! read more

This new brewery in GR is awesome! Thy have great food and a really good selection of drinks! Since they have opened they have always been busy but I've never had to wait more than 10-15 minutes for a table. The interior decorating is really cool if you're into that sort of thing as well. I must begin with the beer: you're not gonna find your usual here and that is a great thing. First of all if you want to pair something with the beautiful food start with your sour saisons. I had the sour strawberry, and it blended so beautifully with the Puerto Rican pork tacos and tostones that I will be back another time. Their black IPA is a beautiful example of a northwestern cascade. And finally, there is the downtown Julie Brown hoppy brown ale that is a happy accident you must try. I encourage you to have a conversation with one of the founders, Edwin, as he is a beautiful human being committed to make others happy. Onto the food: oh. my. goodness. I can't say enough about the fried plantains, the Puerto Rican pork, chicken, and shrimp tacos, the lentil rice (called Puerto rockin rice), not to mention the many gluten-free, vegan, and vegetarian options available to you here. The food is so good, and when you combine it with their beer, you get heaven. Visit now, visit often you will not be disappointed. If I lived here I would visit every week guaranteed. read more

Still five stars upon my update. I came here for dinner and the beer is just as I remember. The menu is slim, which I can appreciate, and the food is wonderful. The menu is made up of tacos, similar to that which you would get at Luna or Donkey. I cannot put any of the three against each other because all are wonderful. To date, I have never written a negative review about a restaurant. I worked in the restaurant industry for years and have always leaned towards giving establishments the benefit of the doubt after a negative experience, but after speaking with friends who consistently had the same problems I had, I realized my experience wasn't as unique as I'd hoped. I just recently moved a few blocks from the restaurant so I was excited to try it out for the first time. I was hoping it would be a place I would want to frequent, but there's a barrier to becoming a regular at City Built: based on the service, it almost feels like they're angry you came. I went early enough so it wouldn't be overly crowded. I thought it would give me a chance to chat with the bartenders and wait staff about some of their beers and enjoy trying out a few. When I first walked in, there was a group of City Built employees guarding the menus, leaning and laughing, most all of them with a look that said "I don't want to be here and really wish you weren't here either." The party disbursed, took the hostess with it, and she didn't come back for another 10-15 mins. When she finally came back, she sat us at a table in the back corner. 25-minutes later, we found a waitress willing to serve us (for those counting, that's nearly 45-mins on a no-wait night and we've yet to see a menu - we were, however, provided with plenty of dismissal served with a large side of attitude, neither of which we ordered). Until that, no one even acknowledged we were there! We ordered the Bori Balls, for starters, since my friend actually hailed from the proud country of Puerto Rico, himself. It didn't take long (surprisingly) to get the app. I'd love to say it was worth the wait, but honestly, they were flavorless and tasted like something that had been cooked yesterday and warmed over. For my entree, I ordered the "Fresh Ass-Salad" (and yes, I chose to put the dash in a different place on purpose), which bothered me. They have a menu item called "Fresh-Ass Salad." A lo-brow attempt to get a laugh? It's not like it's part of a theme, it's just hanging out right there between the Yuca Fries and the Harvest. There's nothing else they've chosen to label this way, and honestly, "ass" isn't something I want to have as a mental image when I'm attempting to eat something I don't want in the first place. And, it was all overpriced for what you get and what you have to go through to get it. There's more that could be said, but the bottom line is unless it's being used as a bomb shelter (and there's an imminent threat of attack), there's no reason to walk in the door. You'll pay more than you want to pay to be treated like a second class citizen while forcing down bad, flavorless food chased with some of the worst craft beer in the state.
