In town for a few days looking for a good microbrewery. Stopped in last night just for a few beers and the Mi Gente was outstanding so decided to stop in the next evening for food and more beer. Was not disappointed as the food was outstanding and the beer equally as good as the previous night ( had Werewolves of Michigan this time). This place was delicious! Had 3 different types of tacos, I thought the shrimp was the best. You have to try the Yuca fries, such a unique difference from regular french fries. I only had one beer, the 5th street (I think) and it was really good. We sat inside with no wait. The place was lively and will definitely going back!. So good! We shared a flight and bori balls - don't skip them! This was the first place I've been that they've taken my temperature upon entrance and it was kind of nice knowing how serious they are. Everything was well spaced and clear. They had plenty of seating indoors and a communal area outside with lots of tables but not a ton of sun at 2PM. We felt safe and completely fine sitting inside. Would love to come back when we are in town and get more Ambrosia and other beers they only had in cans for takeout. read more

I checked out City Built Brewing this past weekend and had a good time! Big bright windows with a lot of natural sunlight, adorable area for kids to play while parents imbibe and friendly service paired with good eats and good drinks. City Built is a crisp, clean brewery that just celebrated their one year anniversary this past week and for that special occasion had some unique beers on tap. Their 6.6% Fluffy Unicorn IPA made with real & genuine ground unicorn horns is a staple on their menu. Well, I not only tried that fruity pineapple & vanilla concoction but also the Fuzzy Unicorn. A sparkling strawberry version to celebrate the anniversary! Both were light & refreshing, well balanced and delicious. Part of what sets City Built apart from other breweries is their Puerto Rican influenced menu making for a different than the usual brewpub food. The Bori Balls ($8) are a generously sized appetizer I actually ended up eating as my main. They are Puerto Rican Rice Croquettas stuffed with Bacon & Spiced Beef on a bed of Sofrito Cream - really good! I went on a normal Sunday afternoon but they do Happy Hour from 3-6pm Tuesday to Friday with special food menu prices & $2 off full pours. What?! Fabulous deal! They also have wines, meads (cool), pops, kombucha and a few ciders - they do it all here! Plus of course, many beers of all styles to suit your fancy. Nice space and good COVID distancing guidelines. Staff were friendly and efficient and were routinely cleaning in between customers. Loved the unique taproom and the patio out front. I'm told there's a big tent across the street in summer that would be excellent right along the waterfront. There's ample meter parking all around. Full disclosure, we only had time for one beer and some apps. I ordered the Fresas Y Frambuesas, a strawberry and raspberry lactose sour. It was delicious and tasted like fruit juice - with 5.5% alcohol. The Snow on Monroe looked insanely appealing but was too heavy for late spring. Would definitely go back. They had a good menu (very Mexican-inspired) and the staff was pleasant, something you're not always guaranteed at a brewery. read more

There aren't many breweries where I would go just for the food, but this is one of them! I always find at least a couple beers on tap that are fantastic - I usually get just a skosh or a DeVito sized so I can have a few. But the food you have to try: Bori balls, Chicken Tacos, Pork Belly Tacos, Puerto Rican Rice (I like to make this an entree by getting two and adding chicken - also get some cheese to put on it, consider it a menu hack). That rice is just amazing. If I only got one food item, that would be it. They also are on the family friendly side without it being too family friendly that it feels weird going out with friends, but I usually leave the kids at home. We checked this place out because a friend recommended it. The bartenders were so friendly and extremely helpful. We ordered 2 flights and I got a seltzer. The seltzer was the only thing we had that was just okay. All the food was good, the beers were good and the vibe was great. I highly recommend the Yuka Fries. In a city full of award-winning breweries, the standard is high. City Built Brewing is a decent brewery, not the best in the city, but average. Here are the pros: 1) Space: It's a large space on the bottom floor of a new building. They have a big bar and plenty of seats at booths, long tables, and smaller tables. In the front, they have a play area for kids with toys and games. Our toddler loved it! 2) Location: It's north of downtown close to a coffee shop, a hotel, and a few other bars. 3) Sours: They have two sours on tap- TKBY with Strawberry Hibiscus and TKBY. They didn't taste like sours, but if you don't love beer, they are good options. 4) Food: The menu is large and they make Puerto Rican food. My shrimp tacos were good. Here's where they need to improve: 1) Beer: Overall, there's better beer in Grand Rapids. 2) Service: It was terrible. Maybe it was trivia night throwing off the servers, but we had to hunt down our server around ten times. read more

I'll be honest, I was excited to try some Puerto Rican deliciousness... but walked away a bit disappointed. The food is plated beautifully, but very mediocre in taste. I ordered a couple of chicken tacos a la carte & some potato and fish croquettes off of the happy hour menu. (I recommend the bori balls over the potato and fish ones.) The chicken taco lacked flavor and the shell was a bit too crusty to eat without making a mess of myself haha. While I don't think the food would bring me back, they have weeknight games running here at random... check out the gaming schedule if that's something you're into! The restaurant is a little off the beaten path but it's worth the trek. It's a large corner commercial building with plenty of seating and always busy. Our first encounter was a long wait we were unwilling to stay for and this encounter was a packed house with seating at the bar. We chose the bar considering we were on a schedule. Aesthetically it has your typical bar feel. The up side is that it's on the corner of the building so it has a lot of windows with lots of natural lighting. The food menu has a lot of delicious looking Puerto Rican inspired foods. The been menu is very select but everything was very tasty. This was the first place in Grand Rapids that I can officially say that I saw a beer below 4% alcohol content. We showed up right before happy hour ended and order the chips and salsa, beer cheese, and bori balls. After our happy hour appetizers we ordered tacos which were delicious. We ordered pollo asado en mojo which was, hands down, the best taco I've eaten in Grand Rapids. We also ordered the camarones taco which sounded good when it was initially read out loud. It is extremely sweet and it wasn't what I had imagined. It is still good and if you like sweet then you should definitely order it. We ordered mild seasoning on the tacos but I recommend medium. The mild has zero spicy ness and I had to use the salsa from my chips to heat it up. Every appetizer was delicious. Our only complaint was that the chips seemed like they were the cheap store bought chips. Too much salt and no real flavor. Every beer we drank was delicious. I ordered the Noah on Monroe and it was creamy and sour with hints of sweetness. It's a different take on sour with it feeing more like a sweet n sour hybrid. If you haven't been and have been craving tacos then you should make the trip. They are definitely busy for a reason. Their happy hour is really good and probably one of the cheaper happy hours in town with $1 and $2 items. read more

Great building, friendly staff, and quality Puerto Rican cuisine. I can't comment on the beer since I'm not a huge beer fan to begin with. The fried rice balls were a great appetizer (I can't remember the actual name). The tostones were also very flavorful and a perfect appetizer to start with. They both came with a pineapple slice with seasoning on it which was strange but tasty. The shrimp tacos were very flavorful and filling. I also ordered the spokes as my side which was surprisingly good. I had no idea what it was but saw other Yelp pictures and wanted to try! The sauce it came with made them more flavorful but they compare to shrimp chips or something in that area. Overall, my family loved everything we ordered and our server was great. Excellent brewery with top notch food. Chicken sandwich was just right. I had an excellent IPA. Great, relaxed brewery.

We were drawn here by the Puerto Rican food, and we were not disappointed. They had just won for their Grandwich, so we had to order it. It was so unique! The flank steak was nice and tender, and the fried plantain "bun" was great. We also shared their Longaniza y Lechon. The longaniza had a good heat to it, and everything else on the plate was tasty. We thought we might end up with leftovers, but everything was so good we cleaned the plates. They have a wide variety of beers, with many serving sizes and crowlers available. I enjoyed my strawberry sour. It was perfect for a warm summer day. The space is large and bright. I loved the touches of green throughout the space. There were quite a few families dining. Our server was friendly and helpful. Make sure to go for a walk afterwards across the Sixth Street Bridge. read more

Have been to CB a couple times recently. Tacos and other food are great as usual. Their salsas are some of the best in town and don't even get me started about the Puertorican rice. My favorite side dish in town. Bori balls are another fave. The only disappointment is that we are still in this Covid 19 stiuff and I miss all the energy that is usually there. We came here with a group of eight. We were sat right away. The place is really big and open inside. Nice selection of booths, tables, lounge area, bar, and party sized tables. We got the later obviously. The service I think was the only thing I didn't really like. We had to wait for our server to stop by three times to chat with us and say hi before he asked to take our drink orders. After that everyone got their drinks, but I wanted a flight and he forgot. So when he came back two more times I asked for the flight, which he then took and went to get. I got the chips and mild salsa which was amazing. I'd come back for these 100 times. My girlfriend recommended the tacos which I got. One pork and one beef. Both were really great. the corn tortillas were thick and tasty, the portions were perfect. The meat on both was moist and flavorful. I added the spicy salsa to my tacos which helped kick them up a notch. I want to come back for more tacos!! The beer. We tried a sample of a good variety from mead (they have mead!), NE Style IPA, Stout, Porter, etc. All of the beers were fun to try. Nothing jumped out at me except for the blueberry mead, which I think actually came from another brewery... But the food I ate was fantastic and the menu offerings were enough to make me want to go back. I just wish the service had been much better. How do I love thee? Let me count the ways! City Built can do no wrong - seriously, these guys have knocked it out of the park since opening day! I enjoy every visit, I always get to try a new beer. and it is just such a wonderful atmosphere. Let's start with my love for the decor. There is a lot of bright kelly/lime green that they throw into the mix as this is one of their branded colors. You can find the color on the back of the booths, in the bathrooms, on the glassware and pop up subtly here and there. When you walk in, you are greeted by a host stand and decorative framed moss on the walls - love this! To your left are chairs in which you can hang out a drink at if you don't want to sit at the bar. They are also a great space for overflow while you are waiting for a table. There are a few different options for seating arrangements. There are two person tall tops that frame one wall, community seating then along that, followed by the bright green booths along that, then the bar. The bar is long and mighty, but oh so beautiful. They have nice stainless steel tap handles, with (you guessed it) bright green stars beautifully on top. If you walk back along by where you came in and follow the hallway it will take you to the bathrooms and another area of seating. Over here there are a lot of more personal table options, ranging from two persons to four persons and maybe larger if I am not mistaken. Oh, and this place has a dedicated are for kids to hang out and play. Totally rad and not something you see around GR in the brewery scene. Okay, now on to the food. It is just all too frickin' good. There is not a bad thing. I usually get a shrimp taco and chicken taco with the mild child sauce. I love this sauce because it is not hot and has a nice creamy avocado base. I will order this with chips sometimes as an appetizer too. Their tostones are top notch, as well as the bori balls. But for real order it all, you won't be disappointed. Of course, I absolutely love their beer too. I haven't had a bad one yet (so keep it up - ha). I love how they are not afraid to experience with different flavors and stick true to styles. They also serve wine, cider, mead and pop too if you aren't into the whole beer thing! They are also going to offering brunch soon, game nights and bingo!
