This diner has such a cool 50's vibe and theme going on, we came here for a dinner party. I had fried chicken wings, onion rings, and breaded cheese sticks for hors d'oeuvres with a ranch dipping sauce. 3.5 stars. For dinner I had a Philly cheesesteak with a side of aju, veggies, and lemon soup. The veggies were BLAND 2 stars, the lemon soup tasted odd to me but adding the crackers and pepper helped, 3 stars. The Philly while it looks unassuming was actually quite good and the bread was soft and perfectly moist, dipping the sandwich in the aju make the sandwich even better "I'd definitely order this sandwich again 4 stars. To drink I had all I could drink ice tea with fresh lemon, the flavor was a little on the lighter side but still good 3 stars. For dessert I had apple pie ala mode. The pie was perfectly warm, super tasty and paired well with the ice cream, "of course" 4.5 stars. Our waiter had a memory like a steel trap, he got all our orders right, his attention to detail was outstanding and so was his service 5++ stars. I ordered a Prime Rib French dip sandwich on Door Dash. The sandwich was full of fat. Every piece of meat had fat and was grisly. It was totally inedible. I called Door Dash and was only offered $10 of a credit. I then called and spoke to the owner of the restaurant. She said that she was unwilling to do anything for me, because it was ordered threw a third party which was Door Dash. It was so very rude of her to treat me this way. I love the vibes at City Diner. I love all the 50s décor and memorabilia throughout the diner and feel like if I was living in that era, this would be the place to go! They also played classic oldies and that was hella cool too. The food here is pretty good as well. I love picking the Early Bird Special and picking three options from a list of over a dozen options. My daughter and I also loved the Chicken and Waffles. The fried chicken was perfectly seasoned and super moist and I loved the light, airy, and crispy texture of the waffles. It was the perfect combination. The corned beef hash was a popular item on their menu but the two times I ate it, the potatoes were tender but missing that crispy texture that I love for home-style potatoes, and the corned beef, although tender, was not as flavorful as I expected for corned beef. Happy New Year 2024 to all of us including The City Diner in San Jose. I was not in the mood to cook and the lady of house was also not in favor of cooking so I took her to the City Diner in San Jose and she ordered the Linguica with eggs and pancakes on the side. With a cup of coffee. The meal was MUY BUENO. All cooked well and the coffee was nice and hot. When we 1st arrived there was no waiting for seats. Once we were done and ready to leave the whole place was PACKED with hungry customers. The waitresses and MOD was busy. The cooks were on time with all plates. They have a pretty extensive menu and offer some specials that are posted on a sign at the entryway. I decided to get one of them; the chile relleno & eggs. You can choose potatoes or hash browns, & pancakes or toast. They have pumpkin pancakes right now so I tried those. I've been going to this place for years, even way back when they were on Blossom Hill and Almaden when they were next to a bar called Almaden Lounge. Good food, good service, great ambience ..... but now there is a problem. Unless you pay cash, they charge a PERCENTAGE (not a flat rate) for debit/credit cards. That's a very poor way to do business. Like gas stations charging extra per gallon for credit cards. I doubt I will return to this place, since such an extra charge is unheard of. If it was a flat rate, that would be different. But this is a PERCENTAGE ... meaning it has NOTHING with covering the cost of accepting credit cards. It's just more greed taking hold of what used to be great businesses. read more

The French Toast was delicious. I added glazed strawberries and marshmallow syrup so it was super sweet. I'm usually underwhelmed with french toasts, but the flavor was great. I think the toppings make the dish, so def pay for the extra! The marshmallow syrup smelled amazing, but the strawberry was smothered all over that I didn't really taste it. Syrup also comes with everything. The food was so easy to finish because it was kinda light. The fresh fruits were a little raw, I would've preferred them to be soft and riper. And this someone loves a good deal. Every day from 8-11am, they offer "Early Bird" specials where you can pick any 3 items (no substitutions) for $7.90. For this price, I don't know a place in San Jose that offers this. Dining is about the service. I have dined here for a while. Food is good! They seem to take more effort on the quality of the presentation. Only complaint I have for anything ordered are the salads. They are on the smaller side for a meal. Everything else has been great. Today Stephanie served me. She was a rockstar! It seemed liked she was tasked to do everything but she flew like a butterfly and stung like a bee. She effortlessly greeted what seemed every customer. When I asked a different server for more coffee, that server asked Stephanie to fill it. Kind of rude on the other servers part. I was at the counter, so we were feet from the coffee pot: Stephanie was pleasant and courteous the whole time, although seemingly running the whole restaurant. Had dinner there Saturday night and at one point we were the only people there. My husband had the eggs Benedict and said it was great. Unfortunately I ordered the prime rib dip. It was the worst thing I've ever had. The "dip" just some greasy stuff with some fat floating on it. The "prime rib" was just some left over beef and not much of it and had zero flavor. Same with the dip stuff. No flavor at all. I think they just defrosted the meat and whatever juice they added grease to it and served it. Horrible. I ate a few bites of half of it and left the rest. My wife wanted an authentic diner experience for breakfast, so I took her to City Diner and they didn't disappoint. We went at 8 am on a weekday, and there were hardly any people in the restaurant. There is vintage decor all over the walls, and they even play 50's doo-wop over the speakers. I loved the classic car models and the old movie posters that were displayed everywhere. Our waitress was nice, she took our order right away. They have an early bird menu that's a great value. I ordered the French toast combo with a hot chocolate. The hot chocolate was sprinkled with cinnamon and it was amazing. The French toast was cooked to perfection, and I highly recommend.
