BREAKFAST STEAK AND LUNCH BURGER I ate at City Diner twice. The first time was in April before going to the San Jose Fair Downs to bet on horse races. Before going to bet on horseracing I like to order steak for brunch. I ordered New York steak asking the steak to be cooked medium rare. After several bites I noticed the steak was cooked medium. Maybe it's superstition, but if I do not enjoy my steak I tend to lose at the racetracks. That's what happened at City Diner since the steak wasn't cooked to my preference as I lost money at the San Jose Fair Downs that day. I wasn't planning to come back to City Diner soon however i noticed one of the items listed on the burger section of the menu was corned beef burger. I've eaten pastrami burger before, but not corned beef burger. Also I love corned beef. I came back last Saturday for the corned beef burger. For $3 more instead of fries I requested onion rights. There is an abundance of milkshakes at City Diner. I asked my server and he recommended the "Groom", which is a mocha malt as it is his favorite. The "Groom" wasn't too sweet so I was able to finish it. The corned beef burger included slices of bacon. I was worried that the bacon would mask the taste of the corned beef as both bacon and corned beef are cured. I was correct as I couldn't taste the corned beef due to the bacon. Overall I'm glad I came here to eat for lunch however I do not see myself coming to City Diner anytime soon. read more

Terrible experience. I placed an online pickup order and immediately received a confirmation that it had been accepted. The order tracker continued to show live updates indicating my food was being prepared. When I arrived to pick it up, the employee told me they had never received my order. There was no apology or acknowledgment of the inconvenience. Instead, I had to wait an additional 15 minutes while they remade the order. Based on other reviews, this doesn't appear to be an isolated issue with their online ordering system. I would not recommend placing pickup orders here until they resolve the problem. This diner has such a cool 50's vibe and theme going on, we came here for a dinner party. I had fried chicken wings, onion rings, and breaded cheese sticks for hors d'oeuvres with a ranch dipping sauce. 3.5 stars. For dinner I had a Philly cheesesteak with a side of aju, veggies, and lemon soup. The veggies were BLAND 2 stars, the lemon soup tasted odd to me but adding the crackers and pepper helped, 3 stars. The Philly while it looks unassuming was actually quite good and the bread was soft and perfectly moist, dipping the sandwich in the aju make the sandwich even better "I'd definitely order this sandwich again 4 stars. To drink I had all I could drink ice tea with fresh lemon, the flavor was a little on the lighter side but still good 3 stars. For dessert I had apple pie ala mode. The pie was perfectly warm, super tasty and paired well with the ice cream, "of course" 4.5 stars. Our waiter had a memory like a steel trap, he got all our orders right, his attention to detail was outstanding and so was his service 5++ stars. The ambiance was so much fun! Our waters and workers there were very attentive. I used to go to uncle John's but had a horrible experience after years of supporting them because I had not one hair but a gross amount of hair cooked in my food. I was sad about it because I thought there wouldn't be anything more similar. But this will now be my go to. I gave them 4.75 stars only because I wish their gravy for biscuits and gravy was better. I didn't take any photos cause I grubbed and forgot. lol everything else was on point their home pot were delicious! Had the senior special dinner with 7 friends and loved it! I chose the Parmesan chicken and pasta. Others chose the turkey, the pork chop, or the enchiladas. The corned beef hash was a popular item on their menu but the two times I ate it, the potatoes were tender but missing that crispy texture that I love for home-style potatoes, and the corned beef, although tender, was not as flavorful as I expected for corned beef. My favorite part of going here is the service. So attentive and friendly, I couldn't ask for better service. My second most favorite thing, of course, has to be the food. There's so much variety. From breakfast, to lunch, to dinner. From appetizers to their vast selection of old fashion style milkshakes with the extra served on the side. I was not in the mood to cook and the lady of house was also not in favor of cooking so I took her to the City Diner in San Jose and she ordered the Linguica with eggs and pancakes on the side. With a cup of coffee. The meal was MUY BUENO. All cooked well and the coffee was nice and hot. When we 1st arrived there was no waiting for seats. Once we were done and ready to leave the whole place was PACKED with hungry customers. The waitresses and MOD was busy. The cooks were on time with all plates. Came here around 12:30 on a Wednesday and it was pretty busy. The waitress was so friendly and very sweet. She was busy and gave really great service. They have a pretty extensive menu and offer some specials that are posted on a sign at the entryway. I decided to get one of them; the chile relleno & eggs. You can choose potatoes or hash browns, & pancakes or toast. They have pumpkin pancakes right now so I tried those. Syrup also comes with everything. The food was so easy to finish because it was kinda light. The fresh fruits were a little raw, I would've preferred them to be soft and riper.
