We were looking for last minute reservations for a large group and City House seemed like it would be nice given all the accolades. When we arrived for a Friday night dinner, we found a restaurant that wasn't busy at all - it seemed like the place wasn't even half full. Since we had a reservation we were seated in the patio area. The patio is completely enclosed and heated, but it's kind of separated out from the main dining areas so service takes a bit of a hit. For example, we were seated at 6:20PM, but we weren't weren't checked up upon until around 6:45PM. I assume the waiter was busy with tables inside the building. Chili Sausage, Cannellini Beans, Charred Greens, Marinated Winter Squash ($31) - The sausage is definitely homemade, arriving with a great snappy case surrounding a very coarsely ground meat filling. It's well spiced and salted, so there's great flavor in every bite, but I feel a distinct lack of emulsified fat in the mixture. It feels dry, very much lacking in moisture and unctuousness, which allows a certain graininess in the mouthfeel. Overall the sausage is kind of meh. I love the charred greens though - they're pretty much perfectly done, so they're charred crisp but don't have any bitterness or acridity. Nicely done! Everything is served on a bed of cannellini beans. They're not really noteworthy - cooked until mostly tender, not mushy at all, still a bit of texture and bite. There's winter squash on top which I also love. Great flavor and seasoning, slightly sweet, filled with umami. Given the sweetness I thought it was sweet potato at first until I looked back at the menu. Portion size is very small for the price. I think the main thing driving up the cost of the dish is the sausage, which is completely mediocre. (3/5) Smoked Country Sausage, Sweet Potato, Sorghum Glaze, Ricotta, Parm, Chilies Pizza ($25) - Great crust on this pizza, perfectly blistered and charred, plenty of bubbling creating great textural contrast against the softer interior. Ricotta is slathered on evenly. It isn't a melting cheese, but some parts get crisped up in the high heat of the oven, while other parts impart a creamy element that balances out the salty meat. There's cubed country sausage and sweet potato, almost indistinguishable in the dim light of the restaurant. A sorghum glaze is applied liberally to the top, adding a more complex sweetness to the pizza. There's a bit of a warming spice from several dollops of chili flakes (the chili flakes here are more complex and flavorful than the typical red chili flakes found on pizza) spread throughout. One of my tablemates found the pizza to be too spicy due to the chili, but I only found it to be a pleasant warmth, not even mild when compared to Nashville hot chicken, for example. (4/5) The waiter told us country sausage or egg could be added to any pizza. One person at my table got egg, which I believe they added on raw and let the residual heat bake. It costs $5 extra. I was honestly expecting better from a restaurant with such great pedigree. The food is good enough, but combined with the higher than average prices and slow service, creates a meal experience that isn't too far above mediocre. It's one of those places I struggle to decide between a 3 and a 4, but ultimately decide to round up. Bathrooms - Three unisex rooms spread throughout the restaurant.

Fun atmosphere. Friendly staff. Inspired menu. Fun for a date night, team dinner, or family catch up. A couple of favorites included the belly jam pizza with egg, baked chicken, and gnocchi. For dessert, highly recommend the ice cream sandwich or sorbet.

Absolute staple in Germantown living. This place is always so great, especially if you love pizza. This last time, I went and sat at the bar with friends and had a couple of amazing cocktails and also enjoyed some food. The belly jam pizza is always a must have. The vibe of the bar area is so great and the staff is wonderful.

The belly jam, parm, chillies , mozzarella and oregano pizza is fantastic! There is a reason why it is has been on the menu all this time. The service was nice and consistent. We also had the lemon almond cake which hit the spot. I probably could have eaten another piece. The pasta was not my thing - it was not that creamy. I would come back from the pizza and cake.

If I could give this restaurant 6 stars I would because they went above and beyond in every way. The entire staff was fabulous. The hostess was kind, the waiter was helpful, and the new manager greeted us warmly. Even the cooks went out of their way to invite my 7 year old cousin to sit at the bar top and watch them as they worked and she colored, making her feel so special. The food was incredible, coming out in courses. As a table we shared everything, stating with the frico, lettuce salad, and belly ham pizza. The lettuce salad ended up being my favorite. I'm not a buttermilk ranch fan but the dressing ending up being what I would describe more as a vinaigrette, light and tangy. The frico was cheese fried to perfection. For our main course we had the special which was a pork chop and Caesar as well as the spaghetti squash. Spaghetti squash is a must, not too sweet due to the chilis and red sauce. Desert is a must! Sweet potato ice box cake is a carrot cake loves dream. So much crunch. Sweet potato and snickerdoodle ice cream sandwiches were rich and creamy. All in all a fabulous experience. My aunt and uncle rave about this place and I can see why. Added bonus the cocktails are fabulous, think we tried just about every one on the menu with our favorites being the Lucy and the Millie. You can't go wrong here! Would be willing to try anything!

Overall really positive experience! Large wine list and cocktails available. Our kid-free group was unfortunately seated in between multiple tables with several children running around knocking chairs over, which took away from the dining atmosphere. The rigatoni pea pesto was delicious as well as the gnocchi. Would definitely dine again but hopefully in a quieter space.

City House was a great experience overall. My parents, wife, son and I went there on our first night in Nashville. The entrance to the restaurant itself is hidden in a rather dimly lit ally, while the interior of the restaurant appears to be set inside an old house. I wouldn't call the ambiance particularly romantic, but it is good for families and large groups--well lit, with a bunch of different rooms and tables and an open kitchen Service was spectacular. Our waitress was so kind and attentive. My son is almost 2 years old and our waitress always made sure he was situated and taken care of first. Drinks were generally good, though I did not find them particularly tasty nor alcohol forward. Both my wife and mine felt a bit sweet. Food was awesome. The highlights were the broccoli pizza and the amazing cake, which was one of the best cakes I have had in a long time. Prices were good overall for the type of food and the entire bill with drinks and dessert for 5 people appeared more than reasonable. All in all, City House combines nostalgia, approachability, and great food into one place. With the exception of great drinks, City House delivers!

The last time I went to city house was 5 to 6 years ago before the Covid times. Admittedly, I don't think about city house very often, probably because I haven't been in so long & it's easy to forget established eateries in this city with all the new flashy places popping up. Armed with a $100 gift card I had neglected for two years my wife and I went for Sunday supper. I made reservations on OpenTable for a 645 seating. When we arrived, we waited less than five minutes to be seated by the hostess outside. Once we were seated, it was clear it was very busy & an "all hands on deck" operation that evening. Despite the busy atmosphere, our server stopped by quickly with water and to take our drink orders. It did take about 20 minutes to get our beers, but that allowed us to be fully prepared to order all in one go when the server returned. We chose two pizza options from the Sunday supper menu, the barbecue chicken and the shishito and potato. Both were good, but I preferred the potato pizza as it was very unique, and the sauce was a cream made from shishito peppers as well as being topped with them. If you are a pepper lover like myself, this is a must have. Since I was determined to use the full balance of the gift card, we ordered two desserts. The goat cheese, cheesecake, and the coffee chocolate cake. The cake was for my wife and the cheesecake was for myself. I think they were perfect for each of us and not surprisingly neither of us liked the others choice. I will not wait as long as I did this last time to return to city house. The service was fantastic and very attentive even though it was very busy. The food did not disappoint & the atmosphere was both cozy & lively.

I've walked by here so many times and don't know why it took so long for us to finally try it out! Loved the homey vibes inside. There's plenty of seating, but I highly recommend getting a reservation. (And they will definitely hold you to the 2 hour table limit) The menu was extremely diverse and everything was so delicious!

Wood fire sausage and broccoli rabe (Sunday Supper)
    Audrey C.

We have been to City House twice now for Sunday Supper and both times it was clear why it came so highly recommended. On Sundays an ever changing menu is served and it truly seems like the chef is showcasing his talent for flavor, tradition, taste, and having fun with it. Standouts this time were the biscuit (outstanding), the pizza (wood fired), and the Sunday dessert cake which was strawberry meringue. If you can hit it when they have the waltz cake, DO IT.

City house has a simple elegance and doesn't try to be too posh! It has a cozy feeling with some of my favorite food in Nashville. The servers are warm, welcoming and always willing to answer questions or help you pick a dish, unlike many restaurants at a higher price point! The building itself is an older house renovated to a restaurant, which fits the Germantown neighborhood and gives you a taste of historic nature of some parts of Germantown. City house has an ever changing menu which offers a new experience each time you go! I haven't had an item I've disliked the handful of times I've gone. The dessert feature was a special Valentines Day cookie plate, which truly showcased the bakers skill! The pasta was delicious - hitting a variety of flavor notes and adding a bit of crunch with toasted breadcrumbs. I can't recommend City House enough as it's one of my favorite places in Nashville.

    Zephyr Squash salad

If you're looking for a different dining experience, this is it. GM Sal Avilla offers a short menu of salads, pizzas and entrees, most of which we never heard of, but the Zephyr Squash was excellent, light, flavorful, with just the right amount of textures and base. The James Beard award winning Belly ham, Mozzarella pizza is also excellent! Try it with the farm egg on top! The service at the bar, even at peak hours was good to excellent, for both food and wine suggestions. The wine list is long and from the continent. The ambiance is casual; this is not fine dining, it's great food!

We really enjoyed our dining experience here! Food was fresh and well executed, beautiful space, easy parking, great service... We were especially impressed by the octopus dish. It was so soft and tender! The green beans appetizer dish was a lot smaller than expected but still really enjoyed the taste. The pizza was so great. I love the big thick heirloom tomatoes on it. Super flavorful from all the food ingredients. The pasta dishes were good but not mind blowing. Carrot cake was recommended by our server and it was really good. Very moist and soft. Would definitely come back if I had the chance!

Ask the Community - City House

    Is there on site parking?

    No. Street parking

How many people will one pizza serve?

As a meal, one. However what we do is split as an app and depending on hunger level split an entree. But if it's your first time, my advice is order two different entrees and share...one pasta and whatever else strikes your fancy.

What is the atmosphere? Stuffy, refined, casual?

I'd describe it as airy, modern, warm, and casual. The space is open and bright and a bit more on the loud side rather than close and romantic.

Is City House a good choice for a party of eight, dinner with clients (everyone from Southern CA)?

Without question. Quintessential Nashville. Just have to call well ahead for a party that size!

We know why it's packed now. The interior is stunning, the service was on point. Professional and personable at the same time. We had the pleasure of sitting outside on a beautiful evening. It was perfect. We started with the tuna tartare and marinated octopus. I'm iffy when it comes to octopus. If it isn't done right, it's horrific. This was so tender, sliced thin, and was a perfect bite with the chilled potatoes. The tuna tartare was equally as good, but the octopus stole show. The tuna has a burnt orange vinaigrette around the outside of the plate. It's more than just a garnish. Make sure you get a bite with the tuna. For dinner we had the bolognese, duck ragu, and braised short rib. All three dishes melted in your mouth. The duck was my favorite, I added a little whipped ricotta to each bite and it was just 10/10. For dessert I asked if they could make a pistachio martini, and gave them the ingredients. Their bartender hadn't heard of one, free poured it, and absolutely nailed it. The cannoli filling was too sweet and too thick for me. It tasted like thick buttercream icing. Personal preference, but I prefer a lighter filling. All in all, I would say don't walk to Luogo...RUN. Reservations are highly recommended.

It came with a seaweed butter, and neither of us felt the flavors worked well together. We asked for regular butter instead and were charged an additional $1. I don't mind paying for extras, but it added to the disappointment when the food itself wasn't enjoyable. My cocktail sounded and looked like a mezcal Old Fashioned, but it tasted more like cough syrup and had virtually no mezcal flavor. After one sip, I decided not to order another drink. I mentioned it to our server, but nothing really changed. The rigatoni had potential flavor-wise, but the pasta was very tough. I asked for it to be cooked longer, but it came back still undercooked. The $40 pork dish was even more disappointing. It was served with lamb's quarter, which I later learned is a wild spinach-like vegetable. The combination simply didn't work for me. The dish also included mushrooms and a blueberry sauce. Somehow the blueberries tasted sour, and the overall flavor profile was very strange. Our server had recommended the dish, saying it was very good, so I went with it. Unfortunately, it was one of the least enjoyable restaurant dishes I've had in quite some time. To her credit, the server offered to bring me something else, but I was ultimately charged for the replacement item as well. By that point it was already 9:30 PM, we'd just come from an event, and we were starving. My partner is generally good about simply deciding not to return to a restaurant and moving on, so we ate what we could and called it a night. What bothers me most isn't the bill--it's feeling like we wasted both our evening and our money. We had been having a wonderful night until dinner. Bad food genuinely makes me sad, especially when I was so excited to try a place with such a strong reputation. Rating: * Atmosphere: 4/5 * Food: 2/5 * Overall: Disappointing experience in an otherwise beautiful space.
