I do not rate 5 stars very often but if you are in Cumberland MD this is as close to a 5 star restaurant you will find. We wanted to find something unique and upscale to eat at during our recent visit to Cumberland. Most of the dining scene in this area consist of the typical fast food or chain joints. City Lights is the exception. Everything we had was very good and reasonably priced. We started with the Wednesday "wine and cheese" special for two. Then ordered the cream of crab soup, yummy, and shaved prime rib sandwich, to die for, in addition to two salads. Service and food was top notch. We had lunch here. Intimate indoor dining room, we sat outside under the meticulously maintained trees, as it was a perfect fall afternoon. I had a chicken filet sandwich with cinnamon apple sauce. Chicken was grilled nicely and the bun was soft and didn't get in the way of the chicken. My wife had a chicken salad sandwich with Cole slaw. The chicken salad had wonderful ingredients, but was a little wet (too much mayonaisse) and needed a little more flavor. Maybe curry or tarragon. The cole slaw was fine, but would have benefited with a bit more caraway seed. Great value for the ambiance that it had. Service was excellent. Our waitperson was very knowledgeable about the menu. We would definitely go back again, especially at night as the trees under which we sat were lighted. read more

This pleasant cafe serves standard American fare for lunch (I've not tried dinner here). The service is prompt, attentive and competent. The food, though, is only mediocre. It's inexpensive, but you get what you pay for: the chicken sandwich and burger were served on dry buns, the side dishes were skimpy and simple dishes lacked seasoning. City Lights is adequate for a quick, casual and convenient meal on the pedestrian mall as an alternative to greasy fast food. read more

A delightful evening sitting outside with great service and good, healthy food. The outside seating is wonderful on a hot evening with the tables under a canopy of trees lite with tiny lights. Inside seating was quite noisy so it was nice to have the outdoor option. There was a mix up with my order but the waitress was very apologetic and took care of the problem quickly. read more

My husband and I were driving through Maryland ti see the fall colors. We stopped in Cumberland by chance to stretch for a bit and have lunch. After walking around the downturn area and checking out a local festival, we found City Lights. I wish I could send everyone I know to this place! Very nice little surprise in Cumberland, MD. Had the Caesar Salad with Grilled Chicken and a cup of white bean soup. Both were very good. Its small, but with that you get a fair amount of attention. Stopped by for lunch on a Saturday. They had a build your own Bloody Mary bar which was quite enjoyable. For the main I had the ultimate chicken sandwich which did not disappoint. Brought a friend of mine here because I was looking to try something new and exciting; I've lived here for 27 years but this was first time finally trying out an old standby the locals hold in high regard. I was, to say the very least, let down. We walked in and the first thing I noticed was a musty, sewer like smell the permeated the dining room. Not a good first impression, and really, i should have followed my nose to the exit. But I was determined to give the place a fair shake so we stuck around. The service was lackluster and fairly inattentive, but this I can usually forgive (she may have been new). However, the food was so powerfully mediocre that it was disheartening. The dinner rolls that came out before our entrees were cold, store bought, whole wheat hamburger buns. I could hardly believe it...but again, I could have forgiven it if the main courses had been good. They were not. My prime rib was reasonably well prepared but it was extremely fatty. They were also out of the mashed potatoes that I was excited to try, so I settled for fries that were not seasoned at all. My date ordered a steak that was overdone and utterly lacking in flavor. All in all, it wasn't cause to complain or dine and dash, but it was a far cry from an experience that we will repeat. read more

Pleasant little upscale grill in the historic downtown part of Cumberland. Seating outside was nice. Our crab cake on a salad was good. Not too bready so you could enjoy the crab itself. The kids' chicken tenders was standard and their fries quite good. Service was slow tonight (a Tuesday night). My only other complaint is that the bread in the bread basket looked and tasted like giant store bought dinner rolls. Suggestion to owners about the bathroom that opens up to a diners's table (inside): put one of those rounded shower curtain rods with curtains so those unfortunate diners aren't subjected to the sight and smell of the bathroom. We came with a big group of 8, 4 being kids. It looked intimidating for kids, more of a romantic date night vibe. Dark lighting, dark decor. But luckily we went early enough no one else was there so our kids didn't interrupt anyone's dinner. Food was great. Had maple honey pork. No kids menu, but did have a limited offering for the kids, which was really nice of them to accommodate. My bf and I had dinner here Saturday night to celebrate an early Valentines Day. I guess I have high standards coming from DC, but I was not overly impressed. We ordered the stuffed shrooms to start- which were fantastic! Spicy and tender sausage in mushrooms with a yummy marinara. I had the raspberry chicken dish for dinner, which came with a side of steamed veggies and choice of starch- loaded or plain baked potato, rice or fries. It would've been nice to have an additional option or advised it came with veggies. It was a large portion but the sauce overpowered/swamped the chicken and it wasn't very good. My bf had their Chesapeake chicken and he said it was good, but overpowered by the melted cheese on top. He had the rice and said it was nothing special. We had their blackberry cobbler for dessert- which had coconut shreds in it. I don't mind because I like coconut, but for some that don't it would've been nice if that was advertised. Overall I guess this was a nice place for Cumberland and limited choices, but I don't think I would go again. read more

This place is awesome. You MUST make time to have a meal at City Lights. The service was great. All the employees were very polite. Food came out quickly and was hot. The American Dip sandwich is the best I have EVER had. This sandwich has many names at different restaurants and is always my default selection. I have never had one this fresh. The meat was season perfectly, the roll was fresh, and the au jus was an added bonus. I actually felt a sense of depression after I finished the sandwich...it was that good. read more

City lights in the past was always the best choice for dining in Cumberland. I love their cobb salad. They even keep fryers separate so those of us with shellfish allergies have no worries. That being said the prices for dinner are absolutely crazy high. I usually eat lunch there but I recommended my family to eat dinner there not that long ago and after looking at the options and prices was blown away. Mostly everything was above 18$ and up -I won't go into detail about the higher prices...lol I think they are forgetting where they are at. Cumberland is listed as one of the poorest cities and the downtown area is a ghost town at the moment. Only a select few can actually afford to eat like this. I will go back but only for lunch. read more

This restaurant does not know what it wants to be when it grows up. The white table cloths and elegant menus led us to believe it was a high end dining facility. Unfortunately with the arrival of the premade bread product and the butter in little packets we were immediately suspect. The disappointment did not end there. Our appetizers consisted of mussels in red sauce and grilled shrimp. The mussels although prepared properly tasted muddy/fishy and were like licking the sea floor and the shrimp which was seasoned properly were overdone and rubbery. We only ate 3 mussels and the waitress did not ask if there was anything wrong when she took the plate. And the disappointment continued. Entrée was prime rib with vegetables and filet mignon and garlic mashed potatoes. The prime rib had a grey boiled steak appearance and the garlic mashed potatoes were not buttery or fluffy and appeared to have some weird additional thyme/Italian seasoning. The overall experience did not meet our expectations. read more
