This is a Fry's market for those who know... but also has many names around the country. Going after the mountain closes is a terrible idea so of course I went then. Doh. Shelves were not the most stocked but the produce was good and that was well stocked, so I was pleased. Best prices in Aspen because Clark's Market is wild with prices. My boyfriend was physically abused at City Market in Aspen. The attendant swatted my boyfriend to signify that he was not to enter the store. This was due to the line for COVID-19. The attendant stormed away. I spoke the supervisor, who was very helpful. The attendant apologized to me, because I approached her supervisor. She ignored my boyfriend, and bickered about the subject as we checked out 10 feet away from her. I am dissatisfied. (However, I will add on 1 star for the amazing supervisor!) read more

Wow! Fire the checkout team. Three of them all hovering around one cash area. I asked where they wanted me and the City Maket games began. Some big male dude pionts one way so I go there. Some snotty old lady then starts patting the conveyer belt. "Here Honey. Here honey." Big dude starts making more comments. Etc. He then gets confrontational and asked if we had a "problem". Oh yeah. MY husnand tells him to back off. He puffs up. Thought he was going to take a swing at my husband who never gets mad at anything. Horrible. What I like most: I give the produce department high marks for affordable organic produce (e.g. peaches). I like the Kroger card discounts. The tamales are delicious. The bread section has good selection and reasonable pricing. What I think deserves closer supervision: I think the prepared food section would benefit from much more rigorous oversight of the customer experience. When we arrived at 5:45 PM, the sushi chef had a Soup Nazi-like reaction when I requested some sushi and told us he was all out--it reminded me of an episode of Seinfeld. Also when my spouse requested the three remaining tamales, she was only given two of the three. When we visited at 10 AM, nothing in the sushi counter appeared to match the nigiri we were looking for so clearly this chef appears to be out of touch with what the customer wants. Dumplings are Chinese not Japanese so it seemed odd to sell them in the sushi section in my own opinion. I think this grocery store requires a certain flexibility in the customer to roll with the punches. I thought dairy section ran out of milk in the half gallon size at 9 PM so I had to buy soy milk instead. I also was looking for shelf-stable milk and noticed it was not available. The cereal section felt like it had half the selection at twice the price of elsewhere. In the self-check out line, I brought my own bag yet the point of sale terminal called for assistance as if I could not be trusted to use my own back pack or it was too dumb to know what would fit into my 60 liter backpack. One day I forgot my wallet and cell when I changed pants in my hotel room. Consequently, City Market's check out staff made me rebuy the produce from scratch rather than holding it for me. I went back to my room via shuttle and returned and repurchased a couple pounds of peaches. I put the milk back on the shelf so I could rebuy later. I am not sure COVID protocols at this store are receiving the management supervision they deserve in that I witnessed employees coughing in the isles. I felt somewhat nervous about bringing my kids to this store and wanted to buy what I needed and get out ASAP rather than loiter. Fortunately for City Market, land scarcity and zoning prevent grocery competition in Aspen. Thus City Market is justified in acting like a monopoly and would require significant changes if any premium Whole Foods-like grocer on the high-end or an Aldi on the low-end were able to penetrate this impenetrable real estate market. read more

Incredibly convenient market in town, more like a small grocery. It is the only grocery in town; I believe. The sushi, donuts and ice cream kept us and our little girls happy. We enjoyed picking up some staples for our week visit to Aspen. read more

Reasonable price points, decent organic fruits and vegetables, nice flowers shop. Wonder why I shop here, to return the favor, I cooked for my friends, and these are chefs, nothing fancy just vegetable soup :-) They liked it, or pretended that they liked it, either way I'm happy. Also bought flowers for them after the Grand Cochon, after all, they got to work, got up at 6 AM, while I was snoring away. People here were so nice and all white. I like them a lot and no one gave me a weird look that I'm not white. haha. Great customer service here. read more

Ok all you complainers - the market is suffering from a staff shortage, as is the rest of Aspen. There are bare shelves b/c of supply chain issues, not b/c they don't know how to order. The core staff have been working like dogs since March 2020 - through the whole pandemic, the insanely busy summers and winter ski seasons. Give these poor people a break - look inside for gratitude and patience - be grateful you are here on holiday in a magical place (and that you have the money and time to do it) - have patience with a staff that is over loaded. These are good people, use locals shop with year-round. And the store has great selection of Organic and regular groceries. This is a place of 6K residents - we don't have 200 varieties of cereal, sorry - if that is your metric of success - poo poo on you. Side note - Wholefoods is 20+ minutes away so unless you have a car or want to take a bus go for it. Clark's Market is a great option too in both Snowmass and Aspen. Enjoy our local supermarket on your vacation and how about showing the staff some respect - they are working long hours trying to cover the open shifts. For a City Market in Aspen, its doable. Prices are OK... just like some other "King Soopers" or "City Market" that I have been to, though I cannot deny its on a smaller scale of City Market. I need some fresh fruits, snacks and some other items which are on "offer"... hence to this City Market I went. THANK GOD its next to where I stayed in Aspen. This recent visit was on Friday December 12th 2014. Time was about 09:30hrs ish. At the check out counter, only 3 is open out of 5.. All in all Decent City Market. That morning, the cashier who handled my transactions and purchases his name is Jose T. Take note, since its ASPEN, and I forgot my Re-Usable bag, there is an additional cost for every PAPER BAG that you need. Just saying.. A small supermarket in the center of town. Considered more affordable of the two main markets in town. It's carrying a limited selection of items which is characteristic of Aspen. It's mostly OK for your daily needs, but just barely. Most people would be able to get by. Has in-store deli but it's nothing to write home about. Anything else, you're going to have to go down-valley to Whole Foods in Basalt or Wal-Mart or Target in Glenwood Springs. Located in the center of town in an accessible location. Has a small parking lot that can get very crowded, especially during the busy times of the year. Has a very nice butcher shop adjacent, as well as an OK liquor store. read more

Sweet local market ... it's owned by Kroger so don't forget to put your Kroger card number in for the savings. This small grocery packs a big punch. It's got everything, incl a butcher. We walked to the store and then used the Downtowner app for the Aspen Shuttle to deliver us back to our condo. If you've got grocery bags, paper or other, bring them. City Market is the local Aspen grocery store. This chain is owned by Kroger's so if you do not already have one, get a loyalty card. It will save you a ton of money, and you can earn Fuel Perks at the local gas station. This City Market's fruit selection is always fantastic and unbelievably reasonably priced. Organic and health foods tend to be reasonable to cheap, but convenience foods are fairly inflated. The prepared foods are very good, though, and not terribly priced. High-end meats and cheeses are fantastic. They also have a small beer and wine selection. My biggest complaint is that the cashiers are rude, and the parking situation is less than ideal. Cars sit in the lot waiting for spots so you get blocked in. read more

AVOID CITY MARKET IN ASPEN, Shop in El Jebel or Roxy's locally. My wife and I were in there this evening using the self-checkout when the man at the next station was signaling the otherwise clueless shift manager, LARRY for help. The man then proceeded to vomit all over the self-checkout unit (the 3rd one from the left when facing them). My wife had the man's vomit all over her bare legs and sandaled feet. LARRY shrugged it off and said "there's a bathroom downstairs if you want to use it, OBVIOUSLY oblivious to the fact that my wife was covered in it. LARRY then proceeded to use a mop bucket that is used to mop the store floors and sop up the vomit with it. There is protocol LARRY when handling bodily fluids. THERE is common courtesy LARRY when your customer has a horrible encounter with another customer's vomit. GET A CLUE LARRY. Spend more time hitting the books on customer service and less time styling your stringy ponytail, LARRY. CUSTOMERS BEWARE the next time your precious potato accidentally rolls on the floor of the produce aisle. Thanks to Larry, that floor was mopped with the same mop that was used to clean up the vomit. read more

City Market is the go to grocery store if you are camped out near the south end of town near Ajax mountain. They have just finished a remodel and the store is clean and bright. The store is relatively small, but the selection is pretty good. They've got organic and regular veggies, a full deli counter, good meats, adequate beer selection, and a redbox. they also have a floral section, and sushi being made fresh in store. they are opening up a city market pharmacy across the street in the old "le tub" location. Prices are extremely reasonable for the famously expensive town. I frequent a Kroger in Houston and prices are about the same. If you want to save some more dough, get a city market card and upload digital coupons via their website. (city market, king soopers, ralph's and kroger are all sister stores...so you can use your home cards here too, instead of getting a new one) If you've been beat to hell after a slush day on the mountains, and need a frozen pizza, a bottle of advil, and a 12 pack to wash it all down, this is the place. FYI: Aspen is outlawing plastic bags, so bring your own reusable bags to city market to avoid a nickle-a-bag fee for paper bags! read more

Okay well this is a Kroger's store and in Aspen, CO, so the prices are well....Overpriced, but affordable for gourmet meats/cheese, I do love the variety for such a small little store. Every time I go to Aspen I like to get some snacks here, since I usually relax in the car to study and do work on the laptop. Since I'm waiting for over 5 hrs I make sure to grab some salami, gourmet chips/crackers/cheese and cookies too. So I'm fully stocked if I get stuck in the car, which I have during snow season. It's also located next a a decent deli that use too have good meatloaf sandwiches. It's still decent, but now much smaller than it was a year ago. read more

This grocery store resides in the heart of Aspen and it's pretty convenient to get to no matter how you slice it. I picked up some chocolate and crackers (I HAVE SNACK ATTACK NEEDS, PEOPLE) before we set out on our snowshoeing mission, and their selection was decent for both. Yay for Godiva/Carr's Rosemary crackers! Wahoo! Obviously it's going to be pricey since it's in Aspen, but what can you do. +1 for self checkout. read more

I went in here for chapstick but also walked around the store. It has a Nice Layout. ATM machine is up front. When the lines get to long, they definitely call in reinforcements to keep it moving. So, this is a grocery store, nothing more/nothing less. Prices are Aspen-reasonable, selection is decent. If you have the time, the gas and the motivation, down-valley options are better (Whole Foods! and the El Jebel City Market is a step-up as well). But this place will cover your bases if you're just breezing through town The aisles here are fairly narrow, but this is manageable because fat people don't live in Aspen. I am from Colorado and always shop City Market/ King Soopers Grocery and have always a good experience. I must say that this is the most unclean store that I have seen. I was appalled at the deli cooked food section. Some of the food had been sitting in the containers all day and were dry and very unappealing. The fried chicken was hard and dry. The help behind the counter seem to impatience and rude. For Aspen to be an exclusive ski restore area, this store needs to upgrade for the area. read more

This is the tiniest city market I've ever seen, which makes it fairly limited in its selection and availability. However, their customer service overrides the negative. The first time the clerk was out of something she took my number and called me personally when they restocked the item. The next time, the clerk literally stopped what he was doing to check the back for me, he then led me around the store to show me multiple similar alternatives. What great employees! I live in Aspen, and we call this place Sh***y Market. You don't have many options for grocery stores in Aspen- so if you don't make the best choice and go to Clark's- be prepared for the *usually* headache of an experience you'll have that begins with the parking lot. It's like a different dimension where everyone suddenly forgets how to drive. The isles are ridiculously narrow, and it gets so crowded in there that all you can really do is just stand there and laugh. The music they play doesn't help at all. THE PLUS SIDE: is that the employees are quite kind, never a complaint in that regard, awesome (for a tiny grocery store in Aspen) cheese and seafood selection (better than Clark's) and the prices are great. Not the worst place there ever was- but I always get into my car afterwards and let out a huge sigh and congratulate myself for making it through that experience. read more
