Went here on a whim and out of hanger on a long drive, and it was absolutely fantastic! We got the Reuben with Brussel sprouts, the tavern burger with fries, and two Laughing Skull Amber Ales. The Reuben was by far the best one I've ever had, and everything else was all very high quality. The service was very good, even with our slight aloofness from being tired due to being in the car. Both the host and the server were very helpful and responsive to any needs we had, and they were both very good about anticipating needs (brought paper napkins and ketchup with our meal, etc). The whole aesthetic was very nice. They have a more cozy color scheme, but an open and spacious floor plan. The establishment was also very clean and well maintained. If I were to come through here again, I would be very tempted to come back again! read more

I just stopped in here to kill some time and have a few drinks, I was actually going to an event somewhere else and this was close by. At first I didn't like the vibe I was getting from the bartender but the atmosphere changed and I started to warm up to the place. I just went there for the first time. I've worked in the restaurant industry for over a decade so I usually have more grace than not with places, making an excuse for everyone. We ordered some drinks from the bar which took a long time to get to the table. I had grace seeing the party you had so I didn't complain about never receiving my Diet Coke. Then after a ridiculous more amount of wait the spin dip and chips we ordered finally came out and the chips were burnt from sitting in the fryer or window way too long, and probably rushing them out instead of timing of the spin dip and chips incorrectly, you sent it out undercooked spin dip anyway. Visually and taste were completely lacking. We received no refills, and about an hour later- WELL after the party had left, they were still not out with our burgers and sandwiches. I didn't even want to eat it anymore because I knew with a good guess that those fries were probably sitting in the window over cooking and they would sloppily throw together the burger and would probably forget the ranch I would specifically ask for all at one time so you wouldn't have to take a 2nd trip to the kitchen. I asked for the check of what we already ate and drank so we can leave. The server then took a ridiculous amount of time coming back with our check, and behold AGAIN came a second time with no check in their hand. Then the front of house I'm assuming manager came to the table and AGAIN, NO CHECK IN HAND. I would never dine and dash, but waiting for the check of the crap we already had was ridiculous. Completely unnecessary. I typically tip even with the worst service I've ever had and this time I was putting a boundary down and not. That was the worst service I've ever had and for them to not comp an APPETIZER for a table is horrible customer service and even the shittiest of places I work would at least comp that and let us leave. I hated to have to leave this review but I specifically downloaded this app to leave this review because that was the most unprofessional encounters I've ever had. We visited City Tavern for the first time this week. The food was great! Everyone in our party received just what they ordered in a timely manner. Beautiful atmosphere. Very nicely decorated/renovated. The staff was very friendly and attentive. Our waiter was awesome. The owner even came over and introduced himself and made sure we were satisfied. My family and I stopped Sunday afternoon for lunch. We told the hostess how many (3 adults and 2 children) and she told us it would be an hour and a half wait. We asked her how many were in front of she and her reply was the couple in front of us that was just getting ready to be seated. We couldn't believe how rude she was. Came in and stood at hostess stand a good ten minutes as apparently the only waiter motioned to me that he would be there shortly. Of course he had the table that was questioning every ingredient on the menu. He then called out to someone at the bar if they could get the door. No one came. I walked out. Prepared to go to one of the other four restaurants on the block. All closed. Came back in. Waiter still tied up with table. Bartender just standing there. I came and sat at the bar. She looked at me and then instead of approaching and asking to take my order - walked away. Walked away. Finally came back and asked what I would like. I required as to draft beers and was quoted all of these IPA's and imports. I asked about just a domestic and was told only in bottles. I ordered one that was quoted and added ".......as I have never seen menu". She then asked if I would like a menu. I told her no. Just bring the bottles domestic. I swear. Second time I have visited City Tavern. The first time we didn't get served at the bar due to the bartenders ignoring we existed. We left and had a wonderful evening elsewhere. Tonight was kind of the same but we did get drinks after 45min. The food needs seasoning. Plus it's not fun to eat somewhere that is kinda depressing looking at all the other depressed ppl. Went here last night, it was pretty busy, everyone was really nice, beer variety was great, beer was nice and cold, some places don't keep it cold enough for me. The food however was another story, we ordered the pretzel appetizer, the dip was horrible couldn't really taste any cheese it was all beer, not balanced at all. Ordered a burger with the tempura battered onions and pickles they were good, the burger was alittle bloody for med/well. We will definitely go back because of the friendliness and atmosphere and just try something else. read more

I wanted to try some place new in Salisbury so I stopped here. The building is nice but that's all that impressed me. The beer selection was ok but not great. I ordered chicken and waffles for $14. The waffles were stale and chicken was nothing special at all; greasy with a weird breading. Not worth the money. Across the road is a pot paraphernalia joint, and you can watch interesting people walk in and out of there while you are eating lol. They do have tv's to watch games so if that is what you want then this place might work for you. read more

Ordered take out today 10 wings an a Reuben sandwich. Let me say Reuben sandwich was very good well worth the money. Wings are a different story asked for 10 extra crispy an hot extra crispy by no means an actually cold I will return but I will not get wings only if they learn how to cook them but other then bad wings staff is good an all in all nice place read more

My husband and I went in for dinner to try it out since we live in the downtown Salisbury area. There was no wait for seating. There was apparently a "big party" on the one side however. We ordered a starter, he ordered a chicken sandwich with fries, and I ordered an entrée that also came with a salad. Our food came almost an hour later, THEN our starter (not kidding), and I NEVER got the salad. Every time the waitress came by I had a mouthful of lackluster food so I couldn't even mention the lost salad until we were about to leave and I was just ready to get out of there. So, basically, I'll not be going back any time soon and I won't be sending people their way considering... I've had better service (and food) at less expensive places. read more

This restaurant is located in the old Benchwarmer's location on Fisher Street. Most people in Salisbury know it better as Brick Street. There are several restaurants and bars in the general area. This makes for a great bar hopping experience. Even though the restaurant is owned by the same people who also owned Benchwarmer's. But, do not confuse it in anyway to the old Benchwarmer's. The venue has been enlarged and completely redone. There is a new brick and glass façade along with a total make-over of the inside of the building. A lot of thought has been put into this restaurant. The building is very tastefully done. As a bonus, commercial-style garage doors have been added to the front entrance to allow for al fresco dining when the weather permits again. This place is now my new favorite restaurant in Salisbury based on the building alone. It is also great for you to know that the food is excellent also. My wife had a girls night out there a couple of weeks ago. Also, several of my friends had been to this place since it opened only three weeks ago. They all raved about it and convinced me to go with them on their second visit. I am most glad that I did. We were greeted professionally when we arrived and ushered immediately to our seats which were tall bar top tables. There were also some dining table seating and a quite spacious bar where you could also be served. The waiter brought our menus and drink orders quickly and then promptly took out orders. They had several specials available including a steak platter. We all opted to order directly from the two page menu. The drink menu is extensive also. My wife had a mixed drink which was made just as she ordered. One of my friends had a bottled beer. I opted for a high gravity draft Seeing Double IPA. It is one of my favorites and is very hard to find in most bars and restaurants. But not here as they have well over two dozen taps available with a myriad of choices. This is not only a great restaurant but also a great bar. This is especially true if you like different draft beers that aren't available at most bars and restaurants in this area. We started with an appetizer of battered fried shrimp. The portions were huge and the shrimp were cooked to perfection. The dipping sauce was very tasty. For our entrees, my friends had the Blu Cheese Burger with pork belly and the rare tuna. I opted for the Bavarian Burger with sauerkraut. The burgers came with your choice of sides. We opted for the fries. Again, everything was cooked to perfection. The portions were very large and the prices were very good. Needless to say, we had food to carry home. Our waiter and one of the other waiters came by several times to check on us. They had the college basketball game we wanted to see put on one of the many large screen HDTVs also as soon as we asked. They were courteous and thoughtful coming by when we needed them but not hovering over us when we didn't. The owner came by to check on us also during the meal. He then approached us again as we stood to leave. He was very gracious and wanted to make sure we enjoyed our meals and our experience. Needless to say, we did. BOTTOM LINE: City Tavern is an uptown metropolitan bar and restaurant in a midsize town. It has all the trappings of a Charlotte or Raleigh restaurant and bar without the hurried feel and the higher prices. I don't see any reason to fight the horrible traffic to go to Charlotte for a great experience now that City Tavern has opened. It is definitely a place to take your friends and relatives when they visit you in Salisbury without having to make the drive to one of the surrounding larger cities. Try it! Great food and service. We had a group of 12 and stopped on our way home from the NC Transportation Museum without a reservation on Sunday afternoon. They weren't too busy. Two wait staff took our drink orders quickly. The salads that came with most of our entrees were fresh and healthy (actual greens, not just lettuce). Everyone loved their meal - many had the chicken and waffles (plentiful chicken). I had the grilled cheese (tasty). The burgers looked great too. Servings were plentiful. We entered this newly renovated restaurant with a warm greeting. Our experience with the food was disappointing. The blue cheese burger ordered medium, came very well done, even burnt on the sides. The Bavarian burger was done as ordered, but the saurkraut wasn't cooked all the way. I would hope that waitress would check these things and make sure she delivered what her customers ordered. I hope these are just temporary growing pains for this new restaurant. Willing to try again and hope to find them better next time. read more

Really nice spot in the middle of Salisbury North Carolina. Huge beer selection and nice bar menu. Got a flight of beer and really enjoyed the atmosphere of this place and the bartender was so nice,sweet and helpful. Definitely worth coming by on a nice spring afternoon. This is very much a step up for Salisbury. It isn't my type of place. Many people were in here during my visit and they have a variety of options on the menu from shrimp and grits to burgers. Nothing really caught my fancy. Minus the pretzel with beer cheese but they were sold out. They do have a great beer selection so if you are into craft beers this place is worth a stop. The service was on point and fast. This place would be a 4 stars but again I was not too impressed by the menu even though they offer a lot. read more

This place has been beautifully restored with a large bar, TV's and nice outdoor patio seating area. They have a well-balanced menu (bar food), and a long list of local craft brews. Was overnighting in Salisbury and wanted a local place and came across the City Tavern. Locally owned by a Navy/Army and an Air Force Vet! Kudos for their service! Now, if you are a "low country" shrimp and grits aficionado, City Tavern will not disappoint. The seared pork belly is killer and the white wine and butter sauce will make you want to ask for a jar of it to take home. Real stone ground grits, and yes you can tell, are done perfectly. Shrimp are moist and tender. This becomes finger food really quick! If I am ever here again, this is a definite stop! read more
