I had a 10 out of 10 experience at CJM Stables! It was my first time riding and things couldn't have gone any smoother. I'm currently visiting my sister on the island, it just so happened that I would be spending my birthday here. When planning I considered the options available, I've always wanted to go horseback riding and CJM made it ALL happen. The process was simple and smooth from the very beginning. I completed a few moments of research until landing on the clear and obvious choice: CJM Stables. They had the BEST pricing on the market, most availability, and easiest process. I confirmed a reservation online in a matter of MINUTES, through a few simply clicks. (I made the reservation the day before, luckily everything worked out). You're recommended to arrive 30min before your reservation. Parking is close and readily available. You're asked about your riding experience and then given a run down on how to handle your horse (how to grab the reins, steer, halt, etc.) After the coordinator assesses the group, they divide you and assign you both 1. horses (depending on your riding experience) and 2. a tour guide! [Guidelines say NO SELFIE STICKS! You're allowed a sack to carry along with you (I was able to bring my GoPro, iPhone, and water). They guide you to a staircase where they bring your assigned horse and adjust your feet. And you're on your way!] The tour comes with a great variety of terrain/ views: from mountains, plains, to even riding along the beach at the end. It was all SO beautiful!!! Our guide made the experience SO much better; Robert was patient, charismatic, knowledgeable and hilarious. He reassured us that if we had any questions at all, to ask away. He taught us about native plants and modern movies filmed in the area, and even told us some facts about his own journey which was interesting! The whole thing was AMAZING. I cannot express my satisfaction with the entire experience! Everyone was friendly, kind. The price was the most affordable in comparison to competitors. I was very impressed by the manner of the horses, they were very easy to ride (as a first-timer, that was my primary concern). I CANNOT wait to come back!! I don't write Yelp reviews that often, however, I'm compelled to for CJM Stables. Sometimes an experience is magical and that's what it was for me when I went trail riding there. The ride itself is gorgeous. I've ridden at three other stables on Maui, the Big Island, and another Kauai stable. This was my favorite. The scenery and views are spectacular. I'm all about green grass and foliage so this ride made my eyes very happy. Riding along wind-blown fields has a magical quality to it. I was on the 2-hour ride and we wound our way up and down hillsides with a lot of different scenery changes. Eventually we came to a beach. It was a lovely ride. While the ride itself was beautiful what really made me write this review were the people. Jimmy is a special person. He is so incredibly kind and warm. From the moment I met him, I loved him. He remembered my name when we came back to ranch after the ride and for whatever reason his warmth was what made the experience so special for me. Thank you Jimmy. Our guide, Will, was also wonderful. He grew up on Kauai and gave us lots of tips and let me pick his brain on a variety of topics, such as the cost of living on Kauai and how his experience was growing up on an island. He also was very conscious of the riders who were riding for the first time. My mom and I were at the front and frequently saw him checking behind us making sure everyone was okay. He would also go back and help people handle their horses if needed. I got such a caring, happy vibe from him. He also didn't rush the group through the ride. We all felt like friends riding together, rather than a money-making machine some stables can feel like. My horse (Hulk) was smooth and while a tad stubborn at times, really sweet. My mom's horse (Ms. Muffet) was a dream to ride. While we only could walk the horses on the ride, I found it super enjoyable with Will and the changing scenery. If you are considering booking this stable, do it. These are people who care - about the people who ride with them and the horses they own. I will be riding with them anytime I come to Kauai. If I could give 10 stars for this place I would! Horseback riding in Hawaii has always been one of my dreams and thanks to CJM they made my dream come true. Our riding instructor (I forgot his name because my review is a little late) was so knowledgeable and patient with our group. I have a lot of riding experience but my brother does not. They gave him a slower horse and he did well with him. My horse was a little sassy but she matched my riding experience. I felt safe the entire time as did my brother. The views were breathtaking. My boyfriend and I came on 4/24/21. One thing I can say is, we had a blast! It was our 2nd day on the island and it was a great start on our adventure on Kauai! Our cowboy, Robert was awesome! He was funny and relaxed and made sure everything/everyone was doing okay. I was matched with Cody, he was a sweetheart, super chill horse until he sees grass. My boyfriend had "Vanilla Bean", Dakota, he was more of a mischievous one, the workers did a great job matching him with my boyfriend. If you get the memo. Super fun horseback riding outing @ CJM Stables in Kauai! It had been many years since I had gone riding, and CJM was the perfect entree back into the game. I didn't remember horses being so darned HIGH off the ground! Felt like I had the tallest horse in America. I immediately became nervous, but got comfortable and settled in once I got going. My partner and I are never coming back. Y'all have a cute rustic office, check in was confusing. Some tall drink of water was the first person to help us, sadly he wasn't our guide. (He was nice!) cute man in the instruction video too. ;) Our tour guide started off snarky and barky. We were happy to have a woman guide at first. She was mean to a pair of kids that were having a hard time understanding. We should have left then. Our guide was the huskier woman with the bad teeth, and she didn't look Hawaiian. We get it when you're having a bad day, but you need to leave that at home when you come to work girl. The ride had 3 or 4 places we could see a pretty view. Most of the trip we couldn't see over the scrub trees. We couldn't hear our guide anytime she talked while we were moving. The couple behind us couldn't hear either. She was quiet most of the time and when she did talk to my partner and I she was rude and mean. Maybe she thought she was being witty? I wanted the ride to end when my partner was having an issue with her stirrups and the guide made her feel bad when she "had to get off her horse to babysit someone." We passed an area I had a question, again our guide was rude and just ignored me. When my horse started wheezing, I attempted to get her attention and I may not have been important enough for her or she just couldn't hear me and my loudmouth. We got off our horses when we got back to the office, and nobody was there to talk to about our experience with the guide, so we left quickly. The couple behind us said "she was a real b*tch to you two." Views 4 stars Trail maintenance - 1 star Horse - 3 stars Facility 3 and a half stars Guide half a star Overall experience - We deleted the photos we took so we couldn't be reminded of this part of our vacation. This should be in your top 3 list of things to do if you are on the South side of Kauai. This is not just a "horse ride" on a trail. You are literally on some of the most beautiful beaches and see some of the most incredible vistas. You ride by the opening scene of Jurassic Park 1. It was awesome. After a 30min walk through of safety and horse riding basics (in case some people have never ridden a horse), it is 2 hrs of riding - just enough to feel super comfortable on the horse but not too long to "hurt" if you are a newbie. The family that runs it has clearly been doing it for decades and they have it wired. They had many different horses - including super gentle ones for first timers or nervous people. What a great day !! For my daughters birthday she wanted to go horseback riding when we were in Kauai. I have already been to horseback riding on the north side of the Island and we wanted to try something different. I found CJM Stables and they do horseback riding down by the beach. They have a great location and the staff was very organized getting everyone started. We were very lucky to get Marty as our trail guide. Marty was very personable and she made the ride very enjoyable. You can get some amazing photos during this ride, weather permitting of course. We had a great day and Marty was wonderful. Never trust a horse named "Quick and Easy" because trust me, she ain't going to be "quick" or "easy". Quite the opposite in fact, but thankfully that did not deter me from having a great morning horseback riding on the very beautiful island of Kauai. For years now I've been trying to get hubby on a horse. Can you believe it? Someone who's never been on a horse, not even a pony at the fair a a child? Bizarre. So on our cruise with two whole days in Kauai, I seized the opportunity to finally put that boy in a saddle. The ranch is beautiful. Located between the mountains and a terrific ocean view it definitely seems far away from your ordinary life. The ranch hands quickly walked us through the riding basics and matched us up with a horse that best suited our experience. Like someone else mentioned... the video is hilarious and Jim is THE BEST. The ride took about three hours and truthfully, I could have done with a little less time. My horse, Quick and Easy decided from the get go that she did not want me on her and did not feel like going for a walk. She treated the ride like one big drive-thru restaurant and tried to eat everything in sight. On two occasions she tried to bite other horses. She may have had the horse version of PMS and as a girl I can relate. Everyone has an off day and this was definitely hers! The views were spectacular. The ride was easy. I could barely stand, let alone walk after I dismounted. Between that and zodiac riding the day before, I felt kind of beat up. The ranch is very well run. Everyone we encountered was awesome. We got to get up close and personal with a horse and her colt. I love, love, loved the dogs that came with us on our entire adventure. That's some serious stamina! Probably the most stressful part of my adventure was trying to figure out what to wear the night before since I don't even own a pair of jeans. Somehow I managed to pull it off... and look cute. If you are questioning if you should go horseback riding through the mountains and beaches of Kauai, then you should stop questioning and just do it. My wife and I had an AMAZING time and I don't think she stopped smiling the entire 2 hour ride. They were super friendly here and our guide (Brittany) was incredible, she was extremely attentive and always there to help out when our horses would get a little bit distracted by all the lush green along the way. The owner, Jim, was fantastic. He knew how to entertain people and he did a good job pairing people to an appropriate horse. The views were breath taking, and we were so excited about the ride. Why the two stars? The guide, Brittany, was the worse. She was terse in all of her directions, and would only bark out orders. She never once tried to engage in conversation, even after my 15-year-old son tried to ask questions just to make conversation. In fact, several people tried to engage her, but there was nothing. If you asked her a question, there was only a one-word response. She never pointed out sights of interest. It was very clear that she did not enjoy being around people. She has selected the wrong profession. Maybe she was having a bad day, however she totally ruined our experience. I would recommend CJM as long as you don't get Brittany as a guide. read more

Definitely worth every penny!!! I rode yesterday with my 11 year old daughter and 8 year old son. We had so much fun and my daughter said it was her favorite ride so far!! Seth was an awesome guide, informative about the Island's history and patient with my son who was a first time rider and who's horse wanted to snack constantly! After scanning the options for horseback riding on the island we chose CJM because it was in close proximity to our stay in Poipu as well as offered beautiful views. We were not to be disappointed! Due to COVID their hours have changed; since they were open on Sunday, we got a group of family together for a socially distant birthday horseback ride! We have had the privilege of having gone on other horseback ride tours, on Kauai as well as on other islands, and I have to say, of all the stables on Kauai the scenery and the guides at CJM are our favorites! We did the 2 hour Beach tour, and the ocean views are wonderful! Some parts were a little dusty, but all in all, you get the whole 2 hours on a horse, and the views were great! And since the road to Māhāulepū is currently closed, it was so nice to enjoy this tour under more serene conditions. A wonderful way to escape the masses and view scenic Kauai. Their horses are very tame, and the guides patient, helpful and descriptive along the route. The four hours goes pretty fast, but your butt is ready for it to be over. They have horses for all levels of riding, and give a helpful training and safety session before every tour. Trail: The scenery and trail is nice specially when you get to the beach but I was hoping to walk more on the beach side! They did offer us a drink and they took pictures of us and sent them all at the end of the ride. 3. Experience: Overall experience is nice and worth your money since you're actually in touch with nature. But don't get fooled the part where you walk by the ocean is minimal. 4. Far and away the very best riding experience we've ever had. I took my 12 yr old daughter, we both rode only a few times before. Marty was awesome from Beginning to end. She asked about our riding history and matched the horses to us perfectly! The ride ... so much to say. The history, landscape, and full tour was simply the best. This was my favorite excursion that we did in the two islands we went to in Hawaii. I have been horseback riding occasionally back home, but NEVER like this. What a trail - every time we came along a beach or the mountains I got so excited. The views are breathtaking, and luckily we were able to bring our cameras since they give you pouches to put on your saddle to carry belongings. Be prepared to take lots of pictures, if you're brave enough to let go of the saddle for a second! The group is initially very big when you're getting assigned a horse, hearing the safety drill, etc. but then it breaks down to about 8 people in a group. You have a leader who tells you what beaches you're passing and gives you tips for leading your horse. He volunteered to take pictures on his phone of each of us when we got to scenic points - we thought that he would offer to send them to us for a small fee, but he willingly air-dropped them to us for free which was SO nice. I couldn't believe basically nobody wore a helmet (only 3 kids out of the initial group of 20ish). I was really nervous but figured if no-one else was just try it out...since I wanted sun protection for my face/shoulders with my hat. It turned out to be a good decision since not having the helmet was better for pictures, but definitely had a pit in my stomach for the first half of the trail! They give a warning that you should wear pants - but because of how hot it was we took a risk and wore shorts. I'm not sure if they recommend pants to avoid skin rashes?? but we felt fine- go for shorts if you're worried about being hot. We did appreciate the advice on wearing closed toe shoes though - you don't want to lose your shoes on the trail and have your horse stop to get it! They also had boots / shoes if you needed them. Highly recommend. For a full 2 hours and beautiful views, we definitely got our money and time worth here. read more
