My family came here to horseback ride. I stayed in the car with my son, who didn't want to ride. The ranch is large and near the ocean. The require everyone to watch an orientation video and sign a waiver prior to the ride. The people are very professional and definitely know what they are doing. The riders are required to watch a short video on horseback riding. Afterwards, each rider is paired up with a horse. They break up the riders into groups of 8. They tell each rider, in a group, the name of the horse that they will ride. Then the riders get up on elevated platform, the horse is brought over, then the rider gets on the horse. This is done, one group at a time, one rider within a group at a time. When all members in the group are on a horse and assembled in the assigned group, then the group leader moves out. The group is gone for around 2 hours. While waiting, I took my son on a short hike across the stables towards the area where the horse shows occur. There is a trail that takes you down to a cave. Across the bridge from the cave is a area with fences and large Tortoises. You can go into the fenced area with the tortoises, who are hiding in holes under trees. read more

I love going horseback riding when I'm on vacation. I was in between companies but decided to go with cjm. I was not disappointed. Marti was amazing. She remembered everyone's name. Was hilarious and really attentive. I'm mad I didn't have cash to tip her. She really made the experience fun. The horses were great. The path was beautiful. I'm an experienced rider, so I wasn't expecting much in terms of 'excitement'. As far as all these adventures go, you must account for the fact that for some people in the group this will be their first experience ever on a horse. The group that arrived to the specific hour of my tour was huge, but I was pleasantly surprised that they divided us up into smaller groups. Based on my experience, I was given a more spirited mare, who was very responsive and eager to go. My husband was given a more calm gelding, and the other 5 people in the group seemed to be appropriately assigned to their rides. The area was breathtaking, ride was approximately 1.5 hours and we had time to take pictures. The weather wasn't the greatest, but that's not something you can predict, is it? The horses were wonderful. Not your typical trail rides for tourists! They are working ranch horses - very healthy and happy looking with shiny and clean coats. The staff was pleasant but firm - it was all about the safety. They offered all kinds of protection gear, made sure that everyone had appropriate lengths on their stirrups and felt comfortable. They also provided with saddle bags, and even a refreshing lemonade drink in the middle of the ride! You should go. read more

This was by far the highlight of our family trip to Kauai! Perfect way to see and marvel at the beauty of the island while riding horse back. We did the two hour morning ride that departed at 9:30 AM. The staff was superb; Marti and her crew really knew what they were doing and this put us at ease. They took their time and carefully matched each one of us to the appropriate horse based on our riding abilities. Views of the mountains and beaches were spectacular. We took a break for some juice while learning stories about the island and it's history. Marti even took the time to take pictures of our family during the trip using her own cell phone. She then gave the pictures to us after the ride using the iPhone airdrop app. The only negative about the trip is now whenever our family goes horseback riding we are going to compare that experience to this wonderful and majestic experience on the beautiful Hawaiian island of Kauai! We enjoyed our ride in January, but my helmet hurt me too much to enjoy the last hour of the ride. Good people, horses, riding instruction, ride leadership, riding pace, and views! We have discussed the following suggestions with them. A first-time rider's perspective: 1. The use of a riding helmet felt like an afterthought. Our guide should perhaps have worn a helmet to set a safety example but did not. There was a selection of about 25 helmets, but each rider did not have time to try on each helmet. I did not receive help to choose a helmet that would keep me safe and comfortable. Please sort helmets by size so that the client can quickly find a comfortable helmet. About half the riders wore no helmet. Hawaiian state law may absolve organizers of liability due to riding injuries, but the use of safety equipment is the right thing to do. 2. It is not possible to remember everything in the instructional video. For example, does "ho" mean stop or go?! 3. Perhaps put the video online or put printed info on the wall so that we can absorb the information before the ride. read more

We went on a trailride today and it was AMAZING!! Marty is an amazing guide. She was knowledgeable, personable, and made the whole ride entertaining. Breathtaking sights, and wonderfully tame horses made for an unforgettable experience. Marty's dog Clara is such a priceless addition to the ride. We loved our time horse riding with CJM Stables! Right when we arrived, we were greeted by Marti who checked us in and went over all our questions. We also watched their safety video. It explained all the safety points we needed to know as well as details about how to turn, stop, etc. It was a great refresher for those of us who hadn't ridden in a while :) Marti then paired us with horses based off our size and riding experience. Our group ranged from beginner to expert. We got to ride Dude and Stoli and they were great horses! Both of us have ridden at a few different places, and we agreed these were the most kept and trained horses we have ever ridden. We were very impressed. They were groomed perfectly and were just impressive animals. Stoli also has some medals as a rodeo roping horse. Our guide was Robert, he was so nice and funny and is basically a horse expert. We could tell he really loved these animals.   We rode our horses in a line towards the beautiful mountains, we crossed a river, rode on the beach, went past the Makauwahi Cave, and crossed beautiful meadows of colorful wildflowers. The views even at the stables are incredible and we rode to even better views. This was such a great way to enjoy the beach and scenery of Kauai.  About half way through our ride, Robert served us some Orange Guava punch. He also took pictures of us along the way and at the end of our ride he sent them to us, which was so nice!  One thing we really loved about CJM Stables was that our riding group was very small, only 8 riders. This meant we got more attention from our guide and we never felt like we were way behind. We absolutely loved the stables and the location. CJM Stables is such a cute place and has so much land for these horses to enjoy. It's also in the perfect location for us to see so many different beautiful sceneries. We loved how well groomed and mannered the horses are and just the overall care of them was very impressive.  We definitely feel this is the best place to ride horses in Kauai and will definitely be back! read more

My husband and I went on a 2 hour group ride. It was beautiful & calm. This is a walking ride. Our tour guide, Robert, gave us some history of plants, animals, movie locations, etc. He also airdropped us our pictures at the end of the ride. We didn't have cash for a tip at the end, but I asked, and Robert took Venmo. We went on a different excursion and that tour guide had Venmo too... they should advertise that/make a sticker or sign. read more

At first, I was apprehensive about riding a horse since it's my first time but Chex was gentle and I was relaxed during the entire tour. Our tour guide was informative and nice. I mainly did this one for the wife on the honeymoon, but I honestly had a great time at CJM. I have never been on a horse before in my life so it was pretty cool to ride one. The horses are very, very calm and trained. You basically don't have to do anything or tell them where to go... they just know and follow the group/path. The views are great from the mountains to inside some tree lined areas to right on the beach. Take a camera and the guides are glad to take your picture for you. The only complaint of mine is that it got a bit long and my butt started to hurt, but I can't complain about getting my money's worth, I suppose. read more

My grandma owned a horse for 16 years, so we were super excited to ride horses in Hawaii. CJM stables was right down the road from our hotel, and we had walked the trail a few days earlier (warning-if you do the walk from Poipu, it's intense!!). The horse ride itself was great with beautiful views. I rode Drifter and my grandma rode Hank. Both were obedient as long as you were confident in your directions. We both had riding experience, but hadn't ridden in nearly 10 years, so these horses were perfect for us. The best part was trotting/cantering across the field (you don't have to do this if you don't want to). Wish we could have galloped! My stirrups weren't adjusted right so my knees are still sore. Just make sure to speak up if you're uncomfortable. read more

CJM is such a fun place for kids! Our little ones did the kids tour which included a train ride, horseback ridding and a mini baby petting zoo zoo. I was so impressed with the young kids who work there as they were knowledgeable and it was just incredible to see them at work! They were also so friendly and showcased the aloha way! However, the main/ head lady was a little too funny and sarcastic for my liking lol. Highly highly recommend this place for a kids activity- they all seem to have a ton of fun! The reason for the 4 vs 5 stars was because my horse and my daughter's horse didn't get along (and the wrangler knew this, i.e., wasn't surprised when they had issues with each other) - so we weren't able to ride near one another - always kept another horse or two between us. This was extremely disappointing event. We had an incredible time in Kauai and we're looking forward to horseback riding and were deeply disappointed. If you want to fall asleep and have an extremely boring time sitting on a horse with no information and a poor tour guide then this is your event. However, if you want to ride on a beach and enjoy yourself you probably need to go somewhere else. You ride for less than a minute on the beach and no information is given as to where you are going on the tour guide does not speak the whole ride. The horses are following each other and you could literally ride with your eyes closed. A complete waste of our money and time. I highly do not recommend it! . read more

I wish I could give CJM County Stables 10 stars!!! I travel to Kauai often and have checked out other horse ranches on the island but this one is definitely the best! Jim our tour guide is a true cowboy!! Even dressed the part! He had great control of his horse and even taught us a few tricks! He made sure to learn all of our names, which was really important because he called you by name to let you know what you needed to do to control your horse! He gave us a little bit of history of the island as we passed by key areas. And we could see spectacular views of the ocean and even got to ride along the beach! It was unbelievable! The trails where landscaped beautifully! They also have an adorable little store where you can get some nice souvenirs! This trail ride was by far the best I have ever been on in 20 years! Jim made it so much fun with his great sense of humor! We had the most amazing family experience ever! We were able to get the most amazing ocean pictures on our vacation!
