We came here twice obviously because they have so many choices for cold sweet treats - ice cream, frozen yogurt and gelato - they have them all. The blueberry gelato was good, and they even had blueberry soft serve. One of the kids had something called Not Sure What To Call It (something like that) and really enjoyed it. She especially liked finding her favorite vienna cookies in it. They have a porch which is fabulous for sitting at to enjoy the treat while people watching. read more

Went here twice during vacation. The service is quick. We got the Maine Survivor, which had everything and anything chocolate, caramel, and peanut-related swirled into vanilla ice cream. Needless to say, we got it again the second time there. Portions are huge so I suggest sharing. read more

This place is the best for ice cream in bar harbor. It is cheaper than some of the other places, has gigantic scoops and tons of flavors that looked amazing. I had the black raspberry disaster. Sounds weird but tastes great ( recommend). My friend had the mudslide which I had a bite of and that too was so good. Neither of those two flavors lacked in toppings and from what I could tell all the other flavors included a generous amount as well. CJ's offers excellent ice cream and countless flavors that will make you a return customer. Over two visits, I tried the Maine Sea Salt Truffle (vanilla ice cream packed with loads of small chocolates with sea salt and caramel) and the Mudslide (Kahlua ice cream with brownie and lots of other "stuff"). The Maine Sea Salt Truffle was smooth and creamy, and for a single scoop, you'll get what amounts to a double scoop in most other shops. The Mudslide was simply too sweet after all was said and done but it's worth sampling. Prices are reasonable especially for the portion size (less than $4 for a single scoop). Limited outdoor seating is available - about three large round tables and a long bench, which becomes inaccessible if all the tables are taken. read more

If I could give less than a star I would. The service was terrible and ice cream was nothing to brag about. My wife, 2 young children and I, went to CJ Big Dipper for some ice cream one night during our vacation in Bar Harbor in Oct. I stayed outside with the kids while my wife went in to order. My wife placed our order and upon receiving it she asked for lids as we wanted to take it back to our hotel. The man behind the counter said he didn't have any. That's surprising, I guess they have never heard of "to go". So next she asked for spare cups so she could use those as lids. He obliged. Then she proceeds to ask for a bag and his response to her was " what do you think this is? A grocery store?" Wow, how nasty. Had that been me I would of left the ice cream and walked out. That guy is lucky I wasn't in the store when he pulled that nonsense. We vacation in Bar Harbor every year and I can say with certainty that I will never go to that establishment again. A major tourist trap. Despite the flashy sounding flavors, the ice cream quality is mediocre, especially compared to other more quality places like MDI nearby. Also beware that they are cash only, a notice that is only posted on the register so that you only notice by the time you are coming up to pay. Went to this ice cream shoppe one night and another "higher rated on Yelp" one the next night. CJ's is so much better hands down. Our trip to Maine was not complete until we had our Ice Cream ..We found CJ's Big Dipper, We ordered Blueberry Ice Cream, as everyone was raving about it, kids ordered the flavors they wanted, we were ready to pay and only to learn when we got to the cash register "CASH ONLY"... So we spoke to the employee there that all we had was credit cards, it turned out to be the owner, who was so rude and annoyed that we were so suprised in a touristy spot that they didnt take credit cards. He told us to "use the ATM on premises, or no ice cream.." What kind of hospitality is this from a business owner in this quaint little town we thought? We are the folks who keep them in business! I wouldnt recommend CJ's Big Dipper to anyone that the owner and staff embarrased our family. TL; DR: Don't bother with CJ's ice cream in Bar Harbor. Not impressed. Ice cream was $4 for 1 scoop, $7.50 (+) for 2. After they had scooped it and handed it to me, I learned that it was cash-only (My bad for not seeing the sign on the cash register, but still)... I was cash-less, so they pointed me to their mobile ATM spot in the corner. I paid $5.50 in fees for that stupid decision. Worse yet, the ice cream was nothing special. For two of us, it cost more than 1 pint of premium ice cream - which it definitely was not . The artisan ice cream shop is right around the corner, and I regret not going just a bit further to have a better experience. The owner who was standing there had some cockamamie story about how "you'd be amazed how much I paid in fees last year at this pub I own... $24,000." We heard him share this story with multiple patrons, so this is clearly his go-to stance about why he feels it's appropriate to pass this inconvenience and **much** higher fees on to his customers. If he's not making plenty of profit margin on a $4 mediocre ice cream cone to cover that fee, well then I suppose he's on his way out of business soon, anyway. OH - and how could I forget? I feel badly even saying this but as a result of this whole expense, debacle, and situation, we were frazzled and upset about the cost and didn't leave a tip for the server. I wonder how much he's paying his staff... minimum wage? I wonder how many patrons a day go through this and how many, like us, don't tip the scooper. So not only does he alienate his patrons, his staff get less of the pie, too. All so that this business owner with multiple businesses can save on bank fees. Never again. read more

First off. awful service. The girl didn't understand what I wanted. Had to tell her 3 times. The ice cream was way over priced, I Wanted to give my ice cream back. I got chocolate chip cookie dough. It said "cookie dough" it was vanilla ice cream with chocolate chips. No cookie dough. Not even a cookie dough flavor. The quality and taste was awful. The ice cream was crunchy like it was freezer burnt and tasted the same. The bins of ice cream they scooped out of did not look homemade or even remotely local they had a big company name on the side... The waitress was super friendly and helpful!! My wife has very many food allergies, particularly to a type of carbohydrates called fructans; she can't have any high fructose corn syrup, inulin, and a few other things, but they don't use any of these ingredients and so were more than able to accommodate her.
