Had an AMAZING birthday dinner here last month with my husband. We were new to the area and decided to take a chance on this spot spaced on the Yelp reviews. This has been one of our favorite restaurant adventures so far! The restaurant location itself is just odd, in a commercial development in a quiet neighborhood with an awkward patio on the front that hides the main entrance. But what this spot may lack in ambience it gains in menu and service. It was obvious as soon as we walked in the door that every staff member took personal responsibility for their guests' positive experiences. All of our dishes were fresh and seasonal and the special bubbly they gifted for our celebration was a lovely last touch. Had lunch here on a Friday. The food and service were excellent. Definitely upscale but not stuffy or pretentious. Very enjoyable and relaxing. They started us wih hot rolls that were delicious. We ordered the shrimp with brussel sprouts. They were excellent. Very favorable and the shrimp were very large. For entrees we had the pork belly and cheeseburger. Both were delicious and the presentation was beautiful. Service was friendly and efficient. A very enjoyable meal at a very reasonable price. We will be back. read more

A Clarity fan who will not go back again. I have been a frequent patron of Clarity and have introduced more than 40 others to this restaurant. I wanted to support the restaurant during the pandemic, so I made three donations including an online gift certificate. I waited until all members of my family were well enough and comfortable eating inside, I made a reservation with the intent of using the gift certificate. I made note of that on my online reservation. At the end of the meal, I presented the gift certificate which was for an amount substantially larger than the bill. The wait staff checked with the manager. They refused to honor the Clarity gift certificate. Initially, the woman who seemed to represent management said it had expired. When shown that there is no expiration date, she said it was not their certificate and walked away. After paying for the dinner, I went to speak with her again, away from the table and other patrons. After restating that it was not a Clarity gift certificate, her discussion became a diatribe against former employees. When I redirected the conversation back to the email, she said she wanted to see the credit card statement showing the charge. I provided it for her several days later and subsequently received the offer of a dinner for one totaling less than one-third the amount of the certificate. At no time has Clarity made an offer to honor the certificate. read more

We love love love this place. Great chef, food, and drinks! I can emphasize enough of the last point. They always manage to find amazing wine, and they have pretty interesting wine/whiskey pairings for their fixed menu. We recently did one where they had a lot of rye whiskeys in the pairings, and my husband loves that stuff. Food is always very good, and they have guest chefs come in every once in awhile and I get to try different DC chefs without having to drive outside of Vienna. One thing I'm really particular about is fish - I hate dry overcooked fish and prefer it on the rarer side, and I've always enjoyed the fish dishes here. Clarity is my go to spot. It actually deserves a 4.5 out of 5. The food is definitely 4+, but you expect that their seasonal menu always gives you something new. Their oyster selection is the best in the area. The happy hour menu is on a whole different level. Maybe only 2 or 3 options on a given day, but damn. Don't get me started on the fois gras or their house made bread. But what deserves 5 stars is the cocktails. Hands down Victor is the best in the DMV. He will put you together cocktails that are on and off the menu. He knows his ingredients, plus he is really cool. Grab a seat at the bar and watch his kung fu. As Chef Jon Krinn has been quoted as saying, Clarity is like a D.C. restaurant that's not in D.C. It's rare to find a restaurant in the Washington suburbs that offers such varied (and changing) cuisine, including various tasting menus and even a bourbon program. Offering all the benefits of fine dining without the stuffiness, Clarity is a fantastic spot for a special night out while in Vienna. While the menu items change, some mainstays are musts. These include the Spice Crusted Venison Tri-Tip and any steak on special. On the night of my visit, my dining companion & I salivated over their Tomahawk Rib Eye. After explaining to our waiter that we had previously been disappointed by a different area restaurant's iteration of the steak (mainly the lack of a bone), Chef Krinn himself came out to reassure us that we would not be disappointed with Clarity's version. When it arrived at our table, I have to say that we were wowed with the both the presentation and taste. Considering their existing bourbon program, I had high expectations for the cocktails at Clarity. Yet again, I was thoroughly impressed. If you have the ability to splurge on any one of their fantastic Manhattans ($21-$26), I'd highly recommend it. Otherwise, you can't go wrong with their more affordable classic cocktails ($15). The only thing preventing me from making the trek back out to Vienna to experience another meal at Clarity is the high price point. While I thought the food & drink was excellent, I'm not quite sure it was worth the exorbitant prices. Our Tomahawk Rib Eye, while delicious, was over $100. Combine that with $20+ cocktails, and your wallet will be hurting. That said, it's hard not to recommend one of Northern Virginia's finest restaurants for a special dinner out. read more

Had really high expectations for this place. To summarize - the food did not live up to the hype. I checked their website for the tasting menu a few hours before dinner and saw items like A5 wagyu and lobster. Upon being seated, I saw that the tasting menu was actually completely different, which led to disappointment. The foie gras was delicious - enough said. The pink conch was pretty flavorful but it was too soupy. I would appreciate more conch or even more filler with less liquid. The rockfish was cooked well and the duck breast was very good. The venison was very very chewy. Note: I ordered it medium rare, per the staffs suggestion. It was a struggle chewing. It was my mom's birthday and they were kind enough to offer us a complimentary dessert which was awesome. The chess pie was delicious. I will say that service was very friendly but not the quickest. Wow!! This restaurant really blew me away. When I first tried to arrive there my maps didn't exactly get me in front of the restaurant, basically as soon as Siri says you're there make a left and you'll see it's kind of hidden away. Upon pulling up to the restaurant it doesn't look like much from the outside, there are a few outdoor tables and orange umbrellas. Upon walking inside you are greeted by class sliding doors and the most fancy dinner ware and elegant space. I absolutely love their yellow highlights in their Decor. Upon walking in I saw sign that said that they never have the same menu every night, I don't know about you but I definitely never expected to end up in the presence of such a restaurant. I made our reservation a couple weeks ago for my best friends birthday. Never did I expect just how top-notch they made her event. They even printed her name on their menus!! Now that is really a touch I have never seen. Their menus are nothing but extravagant, with many options for menu options you would not see anywhere else including venison, lamb, swordfish collar, foie gras. We were not immediately drawn to those plates so maybe it's not per everybody's taste. However their happy hour menu was promised thing I enjoyed my rose, and their scallop starter was DIVINE. I have never had such a perfectly cooked plump scallop. Our waiter was very friendly, I don't think he was jumping up and down serving us considering we all didn't have a three-course dinner - but he did bring us an extra dessert and give us a ton of suggestions on our cheese platter...which was also delicious. I highly recommend their flourless chocolate cake, it was so decadent and incredible. If you ever have a special event or really want to take a left one out for a special dinner this is definitely the place to go. It even surpassed my wildest expectations. My lamb ragu over orechiette was light and beautiful. What it lacked in flair and imagination; it made up in balance and flavor. A touch of hot peppers throughout would have made this A+ dish, the best I've had in the last year. The black sesame and Madeira dessert with a touch of plum and a miso cookie was right out of The French Laundry. It deserves the best Champagne or Condrieu. Sadly this place isn't what it used to be. Jon Krinn is gone and so is everything that was great about this place. Service was slow and our waiter had no idea what was on the menu. Steak was over cooked and the cocktails were not good. Worst part of the night was when we paid. We had a gift card, which they "couldn't find" in their system and sent someone to our table who basically accused us of stealing. After I showed proof that we bought the gift card, magically they processed it. Time to find a new place. Clarity won't last long with their current service and food. read more

I've been meaning to try Clarity and Mother's Day turned out to be a perfect time. Unfortunately, they weren't offering their tasting menu, so the selections were a bit limited but the food was still great. We tried the Seared Hawaiian Tuna, Roasted VA Peanut Soup (rich and a little salty), Emilia Duck Egg Fusilli first courses, and the Halibut and Calamari Pappardelle for the mains. The seafood was great, but the pasta dishes stood out more in terms of creativity and were our favorites. The dessert and restaurant service were AMAZING! they were busy, but our waitress was so kind and welcoming. I loved how the food was high-end but the overall vibe was still friendly and warm compared to some of the other dimly lit places we've been to. I had to sit in a street jacket at the table. The portions were very small and very ordinary, including very pricey desserts . The staff was not helpful. Accidentally, we knocked off a glass of wine. Let me just say this place is top notch!!! Visiting the city for a few days, and I was looking for a place to enjoy a really nice meal during the trip close to Falls Church. This place came up on Yelp, and after reading the reviews, I was ready to try it. I was not disappointed in the least! I love a good tasting menu, and this one did not disappoint. It was 7 courses over about two hours in a very relaxed atmosphere. Nick was the server, and he did a fantastic job through the evening! Enjoyed course after course of flavors, some of which were new to me (ostrich filet and sweet corn ice cream to name a couple). I added the wine pairing and enjoyed getting to taste new wines with the meal. Absolutely delicious. Came here on New Years Eve and had the Seabass and Risotto and both were cooked to perfection! Seabass was crispy on the outside, flaky on the inside. This was our first time at Clarity and selected it because it was included in the 2019 Washingtonian Best Restaurants list. We were very pleased with the experience. To cut to the chase, we believe it is extremely well-balanced in quality of food, service, and price. What were true standouts as other reviewers noted is that the chef, managers, and staff are VERY flexible. In fact, after our conversation with the manager, we learned the restaurant encourages diners to share their likes, so that the restaurant can create the best experience for you. However, since we didn't know that was an option until after our meal, we just ordered off of the menu this past time. To experience as much as we could in one meal, we opted for several starters/appetizers, a pasta dish, and rounded things off with an entrée and then some sorbet for dessert. We also asked for a single pairing for us to share for each course. I often go into more detail about each course, but it is a little pointless to do so for Clarity because what I learned is the menu changes daily! We consider this a very strong quality and credit to the chefs' confidence to experiment and make the most out of what is procured for that day. We've learned most restaurants of this caliber generally keep the same menu for a season. To be succinct, on balance, the food was really well prepared and tasty. Also, we were very impressed with the thought that went into the wine pairings. Each pairing definitely enhanced the meal. Service is very engaged and friendly. However, to be fair and balanced :- / there were a couple of minor service snafus but nothing fatal and completely forgivable given the price point. The total meal which was quite extensive with eight glasses of wine (we were given a nice break on what the a la carte price would be) and a 25% plus tip was $258. Given the pleasure of the experience, it was worth every dollar and then some. Why not five stars? We are stingy with the five-star reviews, and we have to make sure the experience is consistent before rating that high, but my suspicions tell me when we return it will be another great time. Finally, we live in Ballston so the trip to Vienna is approximately the same as downtown DC, so don't let the distance stop you. Clarity is definitely a high-quality suburban surprise. It's tucked away near an office complex. I've been wanting to go here for years and it was decent. Everything was very pricey. We enjoyed the happy hour there. Portions were very big. Ambiance is nice. The best seat in the house is the chefs table area. Would be a nice date night type of seating. It was packed on a Thursday night when I went. Lots old money Vienna folks there for sure. We got lucky because the bar area was too full so they allowed us to sit at the chefs table and had happy hour there instead. The tasting menu looked very small for what it was. Still a nice place to go to if you don't want to head out to DC on a weeknight. The chef went around and talked to almost everyone too. I would come back if the tasing menu was a bit cheaper or had a slightly bigger portion though. I wouldn't call this place kid friendly either. Didn't see much of a menu there for kids. The sauce you will have to experience for yourself. Now to be blown away, I ordered the flourless chocolate cake and a little topper. Chef John graciously shared his barrel select "old scout" 107 American whiskey, WOW absolutely incredible! I was then surprised by a sampling of nikka, banana whiskey, Quinta Rosa tawny, and the rare wine company Madeira! Chef John, you sir have an amazing staff and attention to detail! One of the BEST restaurants in Northern Virginia! My parents took me to this hidden gem last year, and I come here every time I visit. The restaurant is pretty easy to find, and there is plenty of parking. When I walk into the restaurant, I am always greeted by a friendly hostess. If you want to sit at the dining tables, I would suggest making reservations during dinner time as it gets busy pretty quickly. I normally enjoy sitting at the bar or kitchen counter area, where you can get seated pretty quickly without reservations. They serve the full menu at those areas as well. I personally think the kitchen counter seating is the best as you can watch the chefs work their magic :) The food - always amazing! I have never been disappointed by a single dish here. The amazing Chef Jon changes up his menu pretty regularly, so there's no "set menu". The dishes change depending on what's in season, or new products that come in. Again, anything you order will be amazing. Last time, my dad and I ordered the roasted goat ribs, fish & chips, and charcuterie board from their happy hour. All amazing..the roasted goat ribs literally melts in your mouth! Their happy hour drinks are great as well. One of their beers is from Caboose Brewing company for those that like local breweries :) and a shoutout to Victor, the amazing bar tender, who makes the best mixed drinks! All the happy hour food and drinks are fairly priced. Clarity also has reasonably priced lunch menus. The dinner can be a bit pricer, but it is worth it for the quality of food provided. 5 stars for a fantastic Vienna restaurant. My wife and I decided to stop by Clarity, located off Maple Avenue, while we were shopping in Virginia. We saw that it was ranked pretty highly on the Washingtonian Top 100 Restaurants, so we wanted to see if it lived up to the hype. We arrived at the venue, which is located in a small shopping center, and happened to go in through the back entrance by the bar. We proceeded through the well-decorated restaurant to the front to put in our name for a table. While it was too cold to sit outside, the venue had fire lamps lit for a patio that looks like a great area to check out when it is warm. We were actually able to get seated right away in a nice little double-booth type of area near the bar. Our waiter, whose name I can't remember but know he was younger and had longer hair, was great. He was the perfect balance of talking to us and taking care of our questions and needs without being too chatty. He was ready to make recommendations on everything and made sure to stop by our table several times despite being really busy. After putting we in our order for drinks (I got a beer from there surprisingly diverse menu while my wife got a tasty banana scorch drink that I ended up trading her for), we moved on to food. My wife's review talks about her food, so I will talk about my experience with the tasting menu. For about $70, you get 3 courses along with 2 fun surprise courses. Despite my wife having less courses, our food was brought out in a well-timed manner and the wait staff made sure to position everything so that we could share if we wanted. My first course was calamari. It was a solid piece and came with an oyster to boot! I soon moved on to the bluefin tuna belly, which was an awesome dish that mixed the tuna and belly ideas just right. After finishing the appetizers, we moved on to the main courses. My wife got duck, while I got the venison. The venison was perfectly cooked and made for a great dish. However, my wife didn't like her duck, so I traded with her. The wait staff noticed and, without us commenting at all, brought out an amazing piece of short rib and took the duck off the bill! Talk about keen observation and outstanding service to make sure our meal remained excellent. After finishing our entrees, we moved on to dessert. It entailed an awesome flourless chocolate cake along with a chocolate cream that was also great. The chef then came to say hello and brought us out another delicious dessert! I'm not sure if they saw our DC tags or something, but they truly made us feel like VIPs. Overall, Clarity is an amazing restaurant with outstanding food and top-notch service. Clarity was suggested by my cousin who lives in the area. One thing clear is that she has not been here lately. Clarity is in an unassuming building yet the interior design is stellar. Everyone was very nice but I definitely expected more. They are clearly in a transitioning period with a new chef, but with the price and great reviews I was left disappointed. The bread and olive oil was good. I would've loved some flavored butter or something to flavor my oil, especially with the different types of bread. We had the cocktail with persimmon. The cocktail was nice, but nothing special stood out, besides the price. We ordered the duck confit Ragu and chicken torchon. The duck confit ragu was a great dish. The gemelli was cooked perfectly. The chicken torchon was surprisingly cold which did not make a good first impression. I do think i would have enjoyed it more had it been hot. Victor immediately addressed this issue when I let him know. Being that he was going to have it remade, I asked if he would just have them make the duck confit ragu and my request was obliged. Of course, it took some additional time, but it came out hot and I enjoyed it. Although my experience was not one that will lead to a Clarity recommendation, if I were local I might eventually give them another try. As a visitor in the area who is always looking for great food, I'd probably try something else. read more

First time and we were underwhelmed with the food. It was very good and presented well but just not enough to generate a wow and not a good value. It is well staffed so the service is very good. The carrot/fennel soup was exceptional but the salmon and Branzino were just good. We were attending a private seminar at this restaurant so our selection was limited to a pre-selected menu. Our first course was the Farm Chilled Asparagus Salad which contained spiral zucchini, red russian kale, and spruce aioli. For the main course we had a choice of Hickory Grilled Berkshire Pork, Pan Roasted Queen Charlotte Island Halibut, or Farms Stinging Nettle Risotto. My husband chose the pork and I went with the halibut. The grilled pork dish came with roasted cauliflower, wild mushrooms, leek scapes and pork jus. The halibut came with celery root puree, roasted peppers, haricot verts, and prawn bisque. I had a taste of the pork and it was perfectly done with a slight hint of pink in the center. The halibut too was perfectly done, soft and plump. As much as I liked my main choice, I thought my husband's sides were much tastier! The roasted peppers overpowered the other sides and made a lasting taste in my mouth even after the dinner. To finish off dinner, we had a choice of the Bittersweet Flourless Chocolate Cake or the Strawberry Shortcake. The cake was a very small piece (almost the size of a piece of brownie). It was extremely rich. I really don't think I could have eaten more. There was a smattering of chocolate icing on the plate with a gooey chocolate filling in the center of the cake. I think I also bit into a few tiny bits of chocolate chips. Really, it was way too much chocolate but just decadent and served with a small scoop of mint chocolate chip. The strawberry shortcake was everything. It had fresh strawberries and toffee almond strawberry sweet cream served with a scoop of strawberry ice cream. We couldn't have enjoyed the meal more. The food was just fantastic and this was from a pre-selected menu! I would very much love to come back for their regular menu items. Service: Excellent and attentive. Atmosphere: Slightly loud but manageable. We were in a private room with closed doors so much of the noise from the main dining area was not noticeable. Parking: Not a problem. This restaurant is my go to in Northern Virginia. This place hasn't disappointed yet. I suggest that colleagues or fiends eat here and all rave about their experience. It's hard to recommend anything as the menu changes daily. So if you enjoy something once, you may not see it again. I like that if I don't want to drive into D.C. I have in my backyard a fine dining experience without the pretentious. If you can get me to get excited about a vegetable paella, you're killing it in the kitchen. P.S. I often travel to this area for work and clarity has been one of our team favorites for good food and wine. My first experience was fantastic where we were seated in a private room and had a ton of great food. The team also brought us complimentary port at the end of the meal. Our experience yesterday was not so great. The restaurant was rather busy but I expect consistent service at a restaurant of this stature. Our server could not remember who was drinking still vs sparkling and kept mixed them (the only 2 people drinking sparkling were seated next to each other in a group of 5). Dishes were not explained, portions of same dish were inconsistent across the table (2 people got 1 thin fillet, the other got 2 fillets), long gaps between dishes, and the food was just okay. Delicious imaginative menu. Good service and ambience. Great place to celebrate a special occasion.

What a great gourmet place. It is not too big, and is kind of hidden in a small plaza, but the quality of the food and service are outstanding. We decided to try this place because of the highly rated reviews in Yelp, and it did not disappoint. Their menu is very creative, with an incredible combination of ingredients and perfectly prepared. They change their menu almost every week, which shows their creativity to come up with new dishes, and the high level personnel they have in the kitchen to execute so well. Also, they do not just focus in one type of dish, but they actually cater to all tastes, including vegetarians. Their wine and cocktail list is also very appealing, with a nice selection of not very common wines, but very carefully selected. The restaurant is pricey, but you really get your money's worth. I totally forgot to review Clarity after posting pictures of the food... my memory may be a bit fuzzy, but I'll try my best. I dined here the day after my birthday and they customized a menu for me which I thought was really sweet. My boyfriend opted for the scallop appetizers and lamb entree while I wanted to go all in with the tasting menu. His scallops were nice and plump and I was almost jealous, but I received two appetizers instead of one and I also stole one of his scallops, so I was a happy gal. Boyfriend told me the scallops weren't "fishy" and I do believe these scallops were super fresh. I forgot what my first appetizer was but it was quite colorful. I must say that I loved the second appetizer which was a jumbo lump crab salad. I forget how it tasted exactly, but thinking about it is making my mouth water right now and I just remember it was really my style of food. For entrees, my other half got the lamb and even after the meal, he kept talking about how good it was. He said the texture was similar to veal because it was so tender and it wasn't overpoweringly gamy, but had enough gaminess to give it the characteristics of lamb. I really enjoyed the cod entree as it wasn't too heavy or salty, but wasn't a fan of the steak and short rib dish as it was way too salty. I couldn't finish it, but the waiter didn't do anything else to make up for the dish. For dessert, they brought out a raspberry rose gelato that was freshly churned in the morning. It was sooooo amazing! I forget the other dessert, but they put in a candle and it was super cute. The gelato was a charcoal color and it tasted interesting. Overall, love the ambiance and the food! I love how their menu changes everyday and they use fresh ingredients sourced from different regions/states. One thing though, it was SO FREAKING COLD in here!! I don't know why they had the need to blast the AC in here when it was cold outside too. 4.5 out of 5 stars and I can't wait to come visit again! read more
