I guess they have not got the message about Junk fees. If not against the new federal law, it is a killer for me. Happened to look at the bill and saw a substantial "living wage fee". Receipt explained it is retained by the restaurant and not given to the only one who is earning a wage--which is the waitress. Starting to see junk fees as a contagious disease and I don't want to pay it. Raise your prices if you need to. Don't deceive your customers. read more

TL;DR: If you're looking for a good dining experience, go elsewhere. If you're a Clarklewis rep, you have work to do. Details: we got a table for a birthday dinner for 2 on a Sunday night at the last seating, 8:15pm. It wasn't too busy, and service was a bit slow but ok. We got our drinks after a while, and ordered a shared appetizer -- an ok avocado/pea gazpacho -- a halibut entrée, and a beef tenderloin entrée ordered medium rare. The appetizer came a bit late for cold soup, but the entrées took a great deal longer than expected, perhaps 40 minutes later. The $39 halibut was meh, a bit pedestrian. The $55 tenderloin was two approximately 2 oz. slim slices of beef, reasonably seared on the outside but otherwise raw. When I pointed this out to the waiter, he said "yeah, that's not medium rare," and took the plate. 25 minutes go by without a word, with my wife's entrée gone quickly cold. A new plate was deposited in front of me without a word, and the waiter left. My wife had to get up to request her food be reheated, and her plate was yanked without a word. It was returned in 10 minutes in a salad bowl, apparently microwaved. No apology from the waiter. The tenderloin was pretty good, though not $55 good. The maitre'd came over to say he perhaps had overworked the waiter. He comped us a small slice of Safeway-quality cheesecake and two small glasses of what tasted like Prosecco but he claimed were $20 glasses of champagne. When we got the bill, he said he'd only charge me for one of the two $55 entrees -- including the one that was sent back uneaten because it was raw. (Gosh, thanks.) I have a lot of sympathy for restaurants when things go wrong. I don't have much sympathy when there is opportunity to make things better, and the restaurant/staff makes a weak attempt to do so. A premium restaurant would have at least comped one of the entrees, if not both. Clarklewis charges a premium price, and at best it's not worth it. Customers can do much better elsewhere; Clarklewis should do much better, period. read more

My husband and I were able to squeeze in a date night this month, and we were anxious to have an opportunity to try Clarklewis for the first time and were excited to find that they were participating in Portland's Dining Month! A few things that made us feel at home immediately: Mellow music playing...always sets the nerves at ease. Wood stacked near the front door, to be used in the wood-burning oven...explains the heavenly smells as you arrive. The kitchen is well organized, immaculate and seemed very calm given the number of orders coming in! An exquisite cocktail...Mod Save the Queen! We enjoyed the $29 tasting menu and both agreed it was a bargain given the quality of each dish and the obvious care that went into the preparation and presentation. Marcona almonds in our starter salad added a perfect crunch and complemented the sliced green apple perfectly. The polenta in our second course was a comforting counterpoint to the bitterness in the broccolini. My only complaint with the entree was that the short rib was a bit under seasoned and would have benefited from a sprinkle of salt. Of the two dessert offerings, if there are two in your party, I'd recommend ordering one of each. The pavlova with lemon curd gelato was decadent and had a citrus bite that was tempered with a bite of the smooth and creamy panna cotta. Our server was initially very attentive. He came by with a plate of rustic bread and a small bowl of salted butter immediately after we were seared, and he provided excellent advice on what to try on our first visit. Unfortunately, a group of about 28 came in after our first course was delivered so we relied on other staff for the remainder of the evening. (They did a fine job. We went to Clarklewis for dinner a week ago with two out-of-town guests. The experience of this supposedly premium restaurant was very negative! The drink was ok, light in tase. The entree was very small portion; we left HUNGRY. The most negative thing was that, there was an extra mandatory16% "Service Charge" tagged onto the bill which was not explained well on the menu. The captain maitre came over to make sure we know the 16% Service Fee is not Gratuity, and we ought to add another 15-20% gratuity on top of the presented invoice which included already the 16% service fees. We left ClarkLewis concluding it was operated in a dishonest way by charging fees that were not explained clear. We do not recommend this restaurant at all! read more

I will no longer return to nor recommend Clarklewis following the awful experience at their Valentine's Day 2024 prix fixe dinner event. We arrived at 7:45PM for our reservation time to find a very long line that wasn't really moving. Many people were leaving, but only with the advice that everyone else should spare themselves the trouble. Apparently, people who had arrived for their 7PM reservation had yet to be seated, only to be shuffled away into the back of the restaurant to stand around. Meanwhile, many tables sat empty. Elsewhere, bewildered and frustrated diners were not receiving table service. The kitchen was slowly preparing one-off orders, rather than an en masse production that you would expect from an event like this. There was no communication from the staff and it was clear that nobody was taking charge. Everyone on staff was keeping their head down. When we finally reached the front of the line around 8:10, none of the staff greeted or acknowledged us, even though several were right there. After about five minutes, we signed the cancellation list and left. The lack of communication and service was astoundingly unprofessional. I'm not sure they can recover from a bad situation like this. Frankly, the employees should find new jobs and the owner should shut this place down. Nothing more to see here. read more

Came here for the SLAY 2023 New Years. What were they thinking? Bar service was non existent. They had people eating dinner up until 11pm and event should have started at 10pm. Long bar lines. They did not plan this right. Couldn't even get a proper drink at the bars. Who allowed this? $30 for a ticket, over priced drinks that they don't even fill to the top(mostly ice). $13-$15 for vodka and coke for a plastic cup. Went to this place on March 15th. The restraint was pretty small and unimposing, however, the food was very delicious.I highly recommend the king salmon fish, but you can choose what you want. The food here is wildly overpriced. I had the blandest, most disappointing pasta that I've ever had, as well as a horribly cooked lamb dish. The lamb itself was over cooked and tough to chew. The roasted cabbage that came with the lamb was overly sour and made my eyes water. My first two meals at Clarklewis, in 2022 and 2023, were both revelations. Even in vegan-friendly Portland, the menus of higher-end restaurants are frequently sad and alienating if you have any kind of dietary restrictions. What made those two experiences so positive was not just the excellence of the food, but the abundance of options that fell within the somewhat fussy Venn diagram of my needs (no dairy), personal taboos (no red meat), and preferences (the more vegetarian/vegan, the better). On my second visit, I tried a roasted carrot appetizer that was so delicious that I immediately imagined future visits in which that and a salad would add up to the perfect light meal. Moreover, I appreciated the clarity of the menu annotations and the waitstaff's ability to discuss possible modifications. The menu annotations are still clear, but the content of the menu seems to have shifted in a way that leaves me wondering if my wonderful visits in the past were the fluke. This is no longer somewhere I to take anyone who wasn't prepared to eat meat, especially since there is no guarantee of scoping out an accurate menu in advance. The Google information continues to say "Serves vegan dishes," but this is not true of the menu I encountered on my visit or the similar/identical menu posted today--not even a salad! The pizza I had in February, which then had a vegan cheese option (no longer listed), was perfectly acceptable, but not to the same standard as the outstanding fish entrees I have had on every other visit. I was also disappointed with what felt like a lack of generosity when I asked to modify a salmon entree to be dairy-free. The waiter identified the semola gnocchi as the source of dairy, and offered to remove them. The result was a piece of fish on top of a bed of greens, allegedly with wild mushrooms (that I could only assume flavored the tiny puddle of broth at the bottom of the bowl). While it was still excellent, my companion couldn't get over the waiter's failure to offer to replace the gnocchi with something--potatoes, some other vegetable, something. For forty dollars (before 10% "fair living wage fee" and tip), this was less than fully satisfying. If the restaurant still has the chefs whose work I encountered before this year, and if it still aspires to sustainability as part of its ethos, I hope it will seriously consider offering a consistent vegan entree and/or combination of appetizers and substantial salads that could add up to a reasonable meal. Surely this is the direction all farm-to-table restaurants of any integrity should already be moving. One final note in the hope that it may help someone else out: it appears that there may be bread, if you ask for it. I hope it's only a coincidence that the people we saw with bread gave every indication of being astronomically wealthy. read more

I recently went to clarklewis for dinner with the girls. I had been there once a few years ago, and had been wanting to return. This place is awesome! It's easy to miss, because the building looks like an industrial building, and the parking pretty much sucks. I had to park down the street a ways. But I love the ambiance when you walk in. There are stacks of firewood near the entrance. It just has that cozy feel when you enter. Clarklewis is a big supporter of the farm-to-table food movement. They use local and organic foods in their Northwest cuisine recipes. On the menu, they typically list the farm with the menu item. It kind of reminds me of the "Portlandia" episode where the couple go to a restaurant, and they are going to order a chicken dish, and they end up visiting the farm the chicken was raised on. But I do like knowing where my food came from. Their menu changes daily, depending on what's fresh and available. There is one menu item that is constant. I ordered this for my entree. I ordered calamari for my starter, and it was delicious, and I was happy to see that it was on a bed of greens. I was torn about ordering a salad as a starter, but I love calamari, so I was able to have both! For my entree, I got the pasta dish Tagliatelle with braised lamb ragù, shaved pecorino toscano and rosemary. Wow! This was so delicious. The meat was so tender and flavorful! I had a fresh crafted cocktail that was so refreshing! The service at clarklewis is excellent. The food was magnificent. Overall, our experience was very good. We went there after seeing a Broadway production and it was a nice way to end our date night! The interior is elegant with an industrial twist, very Portland. We had lovely cocktails with our appetizer that were almost too pretty to drink( but we did anyway, just had to!) I had the lamb and my husband had the pork. Both well plated and generous. The vegetable sides were equally as tasty and complimented the protein nicely. We enjoyed espresso martinis for dessert and they were lovely and not cloyingly sweet. Great flavor. I do like cream in my coffee so next time I'll ask for a dollop, that's all it would need. The only things we did not care for was we were seated very close proximity to the open kitchen, which is typically not an issue and fun to watch. This time we were close to the dish washing area and whoever was placing items in there sounded like they were throwing the dishes in there! Found out upon arriving that you couldn't order from a menu, it was a Buffet only. I hate buffets! This fact was not mention on the website when I booked. The first time I went to Clark Lewis, 2 of us went for "Portland Dining Month". It was nice having the different tasting plates that highlighted their venue. On a nice day, it is a nice open-view with the windows and door open, with a view to The East (not to see the water to the west). Their drinks were really memorable from that first visit a few years back. However, the most recent time I went with my husband and his parents back in August. The service was very s-l-o-w. But, not in the "Good type of slow" that is revered in Latin American countries and some European countries, where there is plenty of food and drinks and you are too busy enjoying the moment to rush-out-the-door and ask for the bill. IT was NOT like this, unfortunately. It was just plain slow. Our reservations for 4 people was at 7 pm, and we didn't leave the restaurant 'til 9pm. We didn't even have dessert, or a 2nd round of drinks. So, that part was not premium. They had a nice system going where employees were cycling thru and servicing patrons with the main server of course. Seemed efficient. For dinner, the lady ordered the tagliatelle and I ordered the lamb steak. Both items were delicious...I had a taste of the tagliatelle lol. My lamb entree was freakin tasty though. The serving size was filling but in this particular instance, I wanted more. Just drooling thinking about it as I write this review... For dessert, we got the white chocolate polenta cake. It had a white chocolate and raspberry sauce on the side to go with it with added a nice touch of sweet, salty and tangy. It was good. Not only is their food great quality, all made in house (their pastas are made from scratch and you can taste the difference), but their service is even better! I wasn't a huge fan of the scallop crudo, it was too fishy for me, and the pizza was good too, they cook it in a fire brick oven so it has that charred flavor. Made the mistake of dining at Clark Lewis for Valentine's evening dinner. Welcomed by a long wait for a 1/3 full restaurant and greeted by a row of un-bussed tables. Once seated, a large wet spot on our table greeted my date and myself which the hostess was kind enough to cover with a napkin. Rose petals strewn on the table (which should have been a nice touch) appeared to have been left there days ago as the petals were wilted and dried out. Service was extremely slow and staff was inexplicably uninformed about choices being served and ingredients used (only 3 entrees were available that night). The same was true for the wines paired with each course. When the food arrived it was lukewarm (not ideal for either potato leak soup and/or the salmon entree) which was likewise woefully undercooked. All of the items we had ordered were excessively peppered. While I'm a fan of spicy food, my date's tongue shouldn't be burning from potato leak bisque or Caesar's Salad. Additionally, two items were unavailable from the menu which our waitress had no apparent explanation for nor did she take a moment to let us know that the items were in fact unavailable. Our waitress seemed, in fact, quite apathetic and detached from the entire experience. All in all an extremely expensive disappointment and we shan't be returning any time soon. One bonus: our food runner did get each course to our table and had the wherewithal to replace flatware when needed. I waiver between 3 and 4 stars for this spot. It's on the over-hyped and over-priced side of things. But, at the end of the day, it's tasty enough and the ambiance is nice. It's in what seems like a strange part of town (at least for an out-of-towner). And you could easily drive by this spot. There's a small bar area, a long counter that runs the length of the restaurant overlooking the street, a regular restaurant area (all of those in the same large room), and then an area with back rooms for private parties. I arrived early for our private party, so I sat at the bar and partook in happy hour. Naturally, none of their speciality cocktails are actually part of the happy hour pricing. There's also a small, limited happy hour food menu. The bartender wasn't particularly attentive. The cocktails were tasty and well-made. The menu for our private party was extensive and there were several yummy moments. I think, of everything, the salad was my least favorite and the pastas were my most favorite. Both pasta dishes we had (served family-style) were quite delicious. Those would definitely be my pick for ordering a solo entree for dinner here. For a proper entree, as part of the private dining menu, I chose the steak. It was ok. Very fatty. But it tasted good. Our devoted server for our private party was fabulous. One star deducted because we left hungry. If the bread delivery for the day doesn't come in I don't understand why they couldn't get some from one of the many top quality bakeries in the area, though I suppose they might not be a place that allows any flexibility in such things. Also, the host was a bit salty when I said we didn't have a reservation. It was 5:05pm, they had just opened, and I had checked OpenTable to make sure they had availability, but there was no option to reserve strictly outdoor dining so we decided to just go early. No need to be rude if I wasn't being rude. It's likely because I don't have the look of their usual clientele. I've worked at upper class restaurants so I doubt I was imagining this attitude. I understand it's still the pandemic, restaurants are under staffed and not as organized, and customers tend to be less nice nowadays, so I hope I'm not being too hard on them. The watermelon cocktails were good, if a bit sweet for my taste. The wine was smooth and went well with dinner. The smoked salmon appetizer was good if underwhelming. My steak and my husbands pork tenderloin both had interesting flavor combinations. As fine dining goes, they were fairly small entrees, which is why I was slightly irate about the bread situation. The lava dessert was also good. The waitress was lovely. She was attentive and friendly. We made sure to tip on top of the one that was already added on, since all the gripes we had had nothing to do with her service. It has a nice outdoor area, which is newish (I hadn't been there in a year or two) it's good for a date night (especially if you are trying to avoid Covid, my uncle caught it indoor dining and then said he felt like he had been hit by a truck for over a week!) It's just OK. The atmosphere and music were great, and our waitress was terrific. The food was over-seasoned and kind of salty. Even the butter that came with the bread had a bunch of salt in it. In a lesser city this place would probably be highly rated, but Portland has too many other good options from which to choose at this price point. But the kicker was the 16% fee they add to the bill which is NOT gratuity - it says very clearly that it's entirely retained by the restaurant. What? So the $30 I paid for a chicken breast isn't enough? If you need to charge $35 for it then DO it... don't tack it on at the end of the meal. And to justify it they say it's because they pay their employees $15 per hour. Is that supposed to sound generous? That's barely above minimum wage for the Portland metro area. So overall it was an OK but kind of salty meal that ended on a sour note. read more

I had reservations with my girlfriend and another couple on February 15th. It was fairly busy, but not anything out of the ordinary for Valentine's Day weekend. It took roughly 25 minutes for us to even order appetizers and drinks after sitting down, and probably another 30 minutes for them to arrive. We probably did not even order our entrees until an hour in. We decided to go with the tasting menu, and while we understand that it's the chef's choice in terms of dishes, it would have been nice if our servers had explained what the dishes were or contained when they came by to serve them. Our courses would sit eaten and empty for long periods of time, and the one dish that we were actively working on, our server came twice to try to take it away, even though there was still an ample amount of food left. Oftentimes we had trouble just getting our server's attention for drinks or any requests at all, for large chunks of time. Over 5 courses, it took them roughly 3 more hours to serve these dishes. By the time we finished the main course, we waited for dessert for an additional 30 minutes. Overall, we had spent nearly 4 hours (!!!) at dinner, to the point where we almost just asked for the check before our last course came out. Not only was the service slow (and that's putting it lightly), but the flavor profile of the dishes were lacking, especially considering the trendiness and pricing. We were really looking forward to this restaurant based on the several good reviews, and left with a sour taste in our mouths (literally). read more

This is a neat restaurant with great ambiance but there are a few reasons I wouldn't go back. First, it's very high end but the food isn't that great. It was under salted and lacked lots of flavor. It doesn't feel worth the price. Additionally, they charge a 16% gratuity on top of your order that goes to wait staff and kitchen staff and they include that the wait staff all make $15/hr, but make it very clear that this is not considered a tip. If you need to charge more roll it into your prices. Not a big fan of a restaurant deciding my gratuity especially when the food fell short. We made a reservation online and this fact was not provided in the reservation so we found out when we sat down and read the fine print on the menu. Finally, while the wait staff was polite and attentive they were stiff and overly formal. While the table was talking they would come up and stand just a few feet away until you noticed them. I guess they're trying not to interrupt but it felt really awkward. All in all, food wasn't worth the price and wait staff was awkward. I would not eat here again. read more

We came here to celebrate a bachelorette dinner because we wanted to go to a nice fancy place and keep in mind, 3/5 people at this table have been here before covid and it was quote "amazing" (hence this is why we came back). The staffs also dressed very formal before, now it's dirty black T-shirt that say "clark Lewis" and apron--not very professional in my opinion for an upscale place. So she ordered something else, and it took them 20 minutes to informed us that it "must have slipped through the cracks" and they ran out of some ingredient to make it so they decided to make something else for her... okay? She didn't even finished the drink. And it was $16.. not worth it. Their drinks are hit and miss here, not consistent. FOOD IS absolutely TERRIBLE. Saying I'm beyond disappointed would be an understatement. DO NOT GO HERE. We ordered about 15 plates, 3-4 in every categories. Let's break it down... Salads-- ingredients were not fresh and very stale, completely opposite to what they had pre covid. Portions were super stingy, and NOT generous. Pastas-- oh gross, it was undercook, tasted sour, and it was honestly sooooo bad. Even Olive Garden makes better pasta. And I don't even like Olive Garden. We had to send 2/4 plates back. The other two we were forced to finish. Pork tenderloin-- the only decent entre at this place. It was tender and flavorful. Steak-- we ordered rib eye medium done. They came out to be rare, like blue rare... so we showed it to the waitress, and she had them recook it... and it came out again rare. Absolutely unacceptable. At this point I was just disappointed and wanted to go home. Service- was the only reason this place has one star, or else it'll be none if that was an option. Our waitress was super nice and accommodating. She changes our plates after every course and was super nice! But she lacks communication with the team inside.. Wait-- the food/ drinks took longer to come out now than it did before covid, and keep in mind they were a lot busier before. Overall-- 1 star. The overall experience was so bad that we will not come back here. Ever. Ever. Ever again. This has got to be the worst food experience I have ever tasted in my entire life.
