We have come here off/on throughout the year and had ok experiences. We craved Mexican food and thought to give it another try. We ordered two taco plates (one asada $22 and the other carnitas $20), a side of beans, side of rice, and chips & salsa. It came out to $61.78, I gave a $8 tip, and there is a 3% surcharge to use a credit card = $71.87. I almost feel a bit sick that I paid over $70 for this meal. The tip suggestions are categorized so high (I saw one option being $12+). And there is no service involved other than your food was brought out on a tray. Also, I think businesses should say if you're being charged extra to use your credit card. I also think businesses should not make you pay for that service. But, I digress. Food came out fast. I thought the rice was good, except the peas inside can be a bit dried up, the beans were very thick. My husband enjoyed his asada. My carnitas was so bland, I thought I was eating plain boiled chicken. I brought it back saying I ordered carnitas, and the boy working said twice, "That IS carnitas." I was embarrassed, but that goes to show how bland it was.. I have eaten carnitas a lot! I thought the "service" was subpar. No friendly faces. I spent awhile tipping the water receptacle to get the drops of water remaining. The boy working passed me a few times and did not say anything. I heard him tell the couple next to us, that there was complimentary water, but not much water in the container.. mostly ice. I was thinking.. can you fill it?! My husband ended up asking the cook who refilled it, but talk about lazy! I'm sorry for the rant, it's expensive to live in Hawaii and I think people are eating out less because it's a lot to afford. So it makes it frustrating to spend a lot of money for mediocre food and poor service. We live in the area and want to support businesses, but want to feel like we are appreciated as customers. Went for a late lunch, recommended by a friend who's come a few times, so we thought we'd check it out. Came in around 1:30 and they were not crowded, only a couple of tables with a couple others needing to be wiped down for their next customers. Ordered birria tacos plate and a chili relleno plate with rice and beans and after a little confusion. sat down to wait for our food. Didn't take too long and came out hot. Tacos were good, so were the chili rellenos. Would have liked fresh cilantro and onions vs them cooked inside the tacos. Would have helped improve the taste. Overall it was ok. It's a nice casual setting and relaxed atmosphere. Would I come back again, probably not. Too far from home. Little too costly for what you get. Little too lax in service. read more

ok soooooo..... reviewing the wahiawa location. customer service was good. the girl who helped us was really sweet and brought our food to us and was a great server even tho she didn't have to. the birria consomme was the best thing from the birria tacos that was $21 for 3 SMALLER than my palm, kid looking tacos. $7 per SMALL taco, no bigger than my palm. like I said consomme was the best thing. the cubano torta was a good size and good taste. $18 for that. the rice and beans plate was ok, standard, at $10. the chimichanga was also a good size too and taste was decent at $20. we each had a jarritos and it was $5 per bottle. bill was about $94 for all of that. best maybe to do a good truck...maybe you'll get more? read more

A relatively new restaurant at Koko Marina. It is located right next to Zippy's. It's more like a self-service restaurant. Order at the counter and then they will bring you the food. There are bins for you to place the dishes when you are done. There young guy at the counter was helpful when I had some questions about the menu. The decor is cute and festive, just how I imagine a Mexican restaurant would look like. I like the colorful umbrellas at the ceiling. We ordered carnitas chimichanga and azada quesadillas. They were about $20 each. When we got the food we thought that they look kinda small. But actually they put so much meat inside it was so filling. The food was more than enough. The meat was tender and seasoned well. They didn't put too much salt which was great so I could taste the meat. And I don't know what they did to the tortillas but they tasted so good (maybe they deep fry them first?!). The side order of fries was also delicious. Overall great dining experience! read more

Good Mexican food in Hawaii?!? We first went to go have breakfast at Moena Café. Inside was crowded with guests crammed into the restaurant and a long waitlist and people standing outside in the hot sun. After putting our name on the list, we looked at this restaurant two doors down and saw that they also serve breakfast, inside were no customers, there was no line, and staff were ready to serve right away so we took our name off of the list at Moena and went to try this place instead. I am so glad that we did. We were served our food right away and it was delicious with excellent ingredients. The staff were warm and welcoming, giving us whatever we needed and we even got to take home a treat, Tres Leches, that we never get to have here in Hawaii. While we ate, we had a nice view of the water from our table through the window where we watched people come back in from a dive trip. Go check it out! read more

The service was friendly but the food quality for 1 person lunch at cost of $41.00 was less than desired. Refried beans were so soupy I had to mix in my rice and both the rice and beans were so bland. Same for the chile relleno it simply had no flavor nor did the topping sauce. Sadly the thing I was most excited about, Elote, looked delicious but once again no flavor and just was not enjoyable. Lastly there was no air conditioning and the one table out back had no shade protection. Again service was warm and friendly however they need to improve their flavorings for a pricey lunch at $41. The interior decorations are colorful with umbrellas, and little flags hanging from the ceiling as well as Mexican themed art on the walls. The waitress who took our order was friendly. There was a long wait for the food. We got chips and salsa, steak tacos plate, and a chicharron Gordita with chicken. The waitress said the chicharron would be crushed into the Gordita and asked what kind of meat I wanted. I said chicken. My husband said his steak tacos were the worst tacos he'd ever had. The steak was overcooked, almost burnt. The rice that came with his tacos was mushy but we don't know if that was intentional. My Gordita had a thick crust, crispy outside and chewy inside. There was no chicharron or chicken in it. But it did have pulled pork. I was confused. I wouldn't have picked this surprise. But I didn't want to send it back because it took quite a long time to get our order in the first place. The chips were the best part of the meal. Sorry, I would not come back. I made my initial visit to this new location last Sunday...there's one in Wahiawa...for Clau & Chui's Cocina in the Koko Marina Shopping Center. Sunday, you ask? A Mexican restaurant open on a day of rest, family, and worship. Food is sacred in its own way; and I will not refrain from Mexican cuisine on a Sunday. Open from 1100a till 300p; Tuesday - Saturday, it is 1100a to 800p. Closed on Monday. I asked for their listed special by the POS. Mole Chicken Enchilada Plate. The thick, dark sauce was strong...and came with the usual, beans and rice. Solid fare. I can't really judge until I've had tacos...but it was good Mexican fare. I dined in...as I waited for a nearby store to open. Colorful interior...clean and with a good view of the marina...but I chose the opposite side of the dining area. Watermelon Agua Fresca was fresh and hydrating. They were out of horchata. I did have some negatives. I got served on a paper plate. Lunch at Koko Marina Center in Hawaii Kai, Honolulu, Hawai'i... My friend asked me where I wanted to eat, and I replied: Clau And Chui's Cocina. Of course, she hadn't heard of this relatively new business. Located next to Zippy's, the free, shared parking lot is much appreciated! If you need the restroom, get the code and go down the sidewalk and up the stairs. Inside, the restaurant is colorfully decorated with festive decorations and beautiful umbrellas on the ceiling! Outside, the seating has a great view of the marina. At the counter, I ordered the three fish (mahimahi) tacos and the Cocktel de Camarones. Both were spicy for me, but fresh and delicious! I enjoyed the crunchy chips that paired nicely with the twenty or so peeled shrimp! The horchata drink was just right! Note: all drinks are in the refrigerator - grab your own after payment. There's a self-service soft drink dispenser, too. Next time, I'd try the birria tacos, quesadillas, and the chimichangas! Service was friendly and the place is clean and cute with all the bright colors. I had no idea they've been here for almost a year. I'm coming back cuz I'd like to try so many other dishes. Today I only tried the street taco plate. Two tacos with rice and beans. I had the Al Pastor and Asada. The taco had one corn tortilla which be two. The rice and beans were good. And I saw a plate of Mole Enchiladas which I would like to try as. Well as a couple other dishes. I'm looking forward to going back and trying more dishes. Stopped in for a late lunch and was absolutely blown away. This place is a gem! Let's start with the star of the show: the quesadillas. They were truly out of this world! The tortilla was perfectly grilled to a golden crisp, and the inside was a glorious, melted blend of cheese and... I'm not even sure what else, but it was magical. Seriously, some of the best I've ever had. We also tried the fish tacos, and they did not disappoint. The fish was flaky and seasoned beautifully, topped with a crisp slaw and a delicious creamy sauce. A total win. You can't come to a place like this without getting the guacamole, and wow, was it fresh! You could tell it was made very recently--creamy, chunky, with just the right amount of lime and cilantro. We demolished the entire bowl with the warm, salty chips. And can we talk about the view? We snagged a table at the window and it was stunning. It completely made the experience. More like a 3.75 maybe but definitely better than a 3 star. We've come here a few times now, one dine in and several takeout orders. The location is easy to find in Koko Marina Shopping Center, it's right next to Zippy's. There's a lot of parking which is convenient. The service is friendly and welcoming. Restaurant is small but cozy with fun decor. There are a few tables inside and some outside facing the marina. Sometimes takes a little to get the food but that means it is fresh which is something I'll wait for if worth it. Food is delicious and what I imagine to be authentic. The flavor is great and we enjoy the food very much. Chips and salsa can be addicting. The mole is unique and not something easy to find on island and it was fun to try something new again. Flavor was complex and a dish you keep taking bites from. Taquitos are yummy, crisp, and have all the toppings you'd want on top (hello Mexican cheese). Fish taco is a favorite, fish is fried nicely, slaw and sauce round the dish out well. Chile relleno is another favorite and so cheesy with a hint of spice. Birria tacos have good flavor, appreciated the nice crisp exterior, not too oily, and moist saucy meat with consume, but the size, portion, and cost just seems a little lopsided to me. The prices are quite high for the portion which I think has become more apparent over time. The area itself probably makes prices even higher. We all have to be reasonable though that the cost of living (ingredients, gas, etc) has increased which reflects the cost. To be fair, we came during one of the storm weekends so it could have affected things a little more too. Will come back again! Their dessert was pretty great too. I was nearing the end of a week in Oahu on business and wanted something different for dinner. Based on the reviews I thought I would give this place a try. The space is best suited as a walk up, although they do have a handful of tables that you can sit down and enjoy your meal in. The staff was welcoming and friendly, and I was pleased that they allowed me to sample their sources to see what I would enjoy. In the end I went with a plate of brisket tacos with a side of rice and beans. The tacos were delicious, well prepared with fresh onion and cilantro. The rice and beans were not so good. I found the rice to be a little dry, and the beans did not have an appealing texture to them. I think if I were to come back I would probably just stick to the tacos. In the end I was mostly satisfied with my meal, and would certainly consider coming back. read more

Ummmmmmmm, me LOVES me a good burrito and Clau and Chui's Cocina in Hawaii Kai surely delivered yesterday! My friend wanted to take me here for a meal, as she knows that I LOVE my Mexican grindages! Known for their Tortas (unfortunately I didn't edjumacate myself before coming here, as I didn't know what a torta was), I totally missed out on da boat as I could have had an opportunity to try something new. (Insert SAD Panda face). What is a torta? It's basically a Mexican sandwich. You had a choice of meat for your sandwich - Milanesa chicken, beef, pastor, carnitas, chorizo, suadero, chicken. After choosing your meat, the sandwich came with lettuce, tomatoes, onions & avocado, and the bread looked like some sorta "flat bread" thingy? As for my burrito, I must say they packed it, and didn't use too much filler. A good quality burrito, only wished they provided more options as far as hot sauce goes. For a appetizer, my friend & I shared a plate of Cheese Fries with chicken. The cheese fries came with guacamole, sour cream, & salsa. Of the 3 dishes we got, I would say the Cheese Fries was the weakest dish. Although the toppings sounded good, I must say the chicken was a little dried out on the fries. The fries were excellently done, if I had some ketchup, I would have been good to go! Lol! Hola amigos. Heard about this new Mexican place next to my hairdresser. Not an expert on Mexican food but love to eat it. Ordered the two carnitas taco plate with beans and rice. Just a heads up. It's more street tacos with the soft shells and not the crunchy shells that you're used to. Love it comes with cilantro, some onions and green salsa in a small container. Can't go wrong with rice and beans. Also had the chimichanga with beef steak. There was some rice and other things in a nice crunchy outside. It was also fresh and hot and came only with a larger container of green salsa. Loved the crunch when bitting into it. Very moist but not a dripping mess. It does not come with rice and beans. You would have to make it a side order. Atmosphere is homie with a Mexican flare. Spanish music and decorations. The lady at the cashier was very patient with my order since it was my first time there. Tables and floor were clean and seating was indoors and cool by air conditioning. Pros: Fresh and hot made to order food. Love the cilantro and green salsa which gives the food a nice clean and cool feel in my mouth. Con: Wish I knew that there was a soda fountain option as a drink option. Would I return: I am always trying to eat the same place twice as a follow up on places I review. So, yes. I will return. Plus the day I went, they had menudol and osso bucco which I also love. Got to try theirs. Excited to finally have Mexican food in the neighborhood. Located in Koko Marina next to Moana cafe, this place is small, but has lots of lively and vibrant decor. We ordered takeout in person and the whole process was pretty quick and seamless. We ordered the Mole chicken enchilada special and a burrito with chorizo. The enchilada was very rich, and both salty and sweet. It came with rice and beans. The burrito was stuffed and very filling. Mostly importantly, the food was authentic and we were very satisfied with our meal. Next time, hopefully we'll have enough room for tres leches. read more

Clau and Chui's Cocina opened a third location - this time it's in Hawaii Kai. I've been trying to go to their Wahiawa location forever, but it's always closed on Sunday's when im in the area. Luckily there's one slightly closer now and their operating hours is pretty good. They're located in the farthest shopping center in Hawaii Kai where the Petco is located. They're in the far back next to zippys. Theres lots of free/available parking as well. Theres two entrances - one from the parking lot and one from the pier and lots of available seating either indoors or outdoors. I actually came here twice - first time i got the recommended cubano torta for about $18? It kinda caught me off guard as there was several half slices of hotdogs in there. taste wise was ok but it definitely wasn't my favorite. Went back again another day for the birria tacos ($20) and it still was just ok. Kinda disappointed since i heard so many good things about this place and with my many attempts to try to go to the other location. read more

Mannnnnn. This place was too good to be consistently true. After a few good meals, it's now off my list. Whoever was cooking when they first opened must no longer be around. Everything is bland. Meats dry. Rice dry. And your only options for flavor are either a hella spicy salsa or the green salsa...which is simple, citrusy, and consistently tasty. They're missing a pico de gallo type option, something in the middle to bridge the gap. My biggest complaint is their timing. Last couple of times, our food was brought out about 5-10 minutes apart. Most recently, my plate of tacos came out first yet everything was lukewarm. I was starving and didn't want to wait for a redo, so I ate it anyway. Plus, it would likely have been just as bland and dry, just warm, bland and dry. Needless to say, after spending $45 plus tip on two paper plates of less than mediocre food, we are done. I do hope they get back on track as good Mexican food is sorely needed in the area. But this just ain't it. read more

Second time coming here. Glad to have a Mexican restaurant in Hawaii Kai. It is by no means bad but the food is just OK. Tacos were ok. Chicken was average but the carnitas were very good and moist. Savory and delicious. Very friendly owner staff. Convenient parking. I am not the most experienced critic of Mexican fare. With my limited exposure, I go with my gut. Literally. The two page menu display by the register is simple and to the point. No frills or fancy signage needed. I ask what's good and owner Claudia enthusiastically recommends the Street Tacos and Birria while calling me "Sweetie". The price point is on the higher end ($18 for 3 tacos). This may raise an eyebrow for lunch prices. But the food is delicious. When I say that, I mean I inhaled all three tacos in 5 minutes. Greasy, yes. But I'm not coming here for health reasons. When I bite into the taco, the Birria juices run down my hand and I unabashedly catch the shredded meat with my teeth. The dish comes with consommé and salsa, both leveling up the flavor factor. The consommé is the sleeper accompaniment. The red onions and cilantro compliment the cheesy, meaty tacos perfectly. You do not need much salsa- a dab is plenty for that extra kick. It's got to be hard to make money selling tacos these days but a $6 street taco better deliver. I got the chicken, pork and steak. Chicken was 2/5. Just uninteresting. Protein had little flavor, store bought tortilla, salsa was okay. Pork has more flavor so 3/5 and steak was the same. For the price, make your own tortillas and double up. A double handmade tortilla goes a long way. Aa salsa bar with some interesting salsas / pickled vegetables would also be a nice touch. A good salsa with some heat can make the chicken a little more interesting. Ambiance / service is good. read more

Pretty new restaurant in Koko Marina close to Moena Cafe. Clau and Chui's is a friendly space that was relatively crowded when we went to pick up food. There was a line to order and our food was ready when we got there. The staff was friendly and efficient, answering any questions the people in front of us had. We got two taco plates with carne asada tacos and a burrito. We thought the tacos were a bit pricey but they gave a good amount of carne asada. The beans were especially tasty. Clau and Chui's Cocina is, by far, the best Mexican restaurant I've eaten at in Hawaii. I feel competent in saying this as I'm originally from San Antonio,TX which is about 65% 'Chicano and grew up in an all Hispanic neighborhood. I ate real homemade Mexican food almost every day. Clau and Chui's food is excellent and tastes like homemade, the "real thing!" The portions of the food were good, the price was reasonable for Hawaii and the atmosphere/service was good and pleasant and almost like being back home on the West Side of San Antonio. If you want good Mexican food that you don't have to pay an "arm and a leg" for, I highly recommend eating at Clau and Chui's. read more

We come here for lunch all the time and they make the best chicken street tacos. But today I went there for breakfast and man their breakfast burrito with chorizo was amazing. This is definitely one of my favorite places to get Mexican food on the island. Me and my mom come here quite a lot for their enchiladas and their food is consistent and good. The service is always good and everyone is friendly, it's nice that their is also seating near the window where you can watch the bay outside, definitely recommend their enchiladas, you get a good amount of food to what you pay for. I've tried the chicken tamales but they're not as good as most of the other food on the menu.The birria tacos are good as well but pricy for only three small tacos.
