Somewhat pricy but great go to for Christmas and Birthday gifts from the kids to family. Been there 4 time in the past 6 months. Great rainy day activity. They will even fire your pottery for you. HINT* During Christmas time you can get Ceramics on sale at Ben Franklin and take them into Clay Café and paint them there and they will fire it for you for a fee. First time trying this place out with my daughter and the neighbors kids! They have a great menu selection for coffee, cold snacks like gelato and smoothies! Yum! The kids had smoothies and I had the cookies n cream gelato! Sooo delicious! The pottery is pretty cool! You choose the figure you want to paint and you go up and pay for it. Then you sit down in your assigned table station and the assistant comes to explain what to do! The colors for the pottery are on the wall and you have a color palette to place each color on. Tons of different size paint brushes to choose from. Every coat of color on your pottery piece and then you blow dry it and repeat it 3x. After you are done there are smaller bottles of paint with pointy tips to write your name or draw in the eyes if you do have a pottery character with eyes. Then they let you wash your hands at the hand washing station and they call you to pick up your pottery piece 7-10 days later! I cant wait to see the end results! read more

Seeing that there is no other paint it pottery place this place is as good as it'll get. The staff was mostly friendly except one guy who was dull...not sure what that was about...but he gave us our directions well so I guess what more can you ask for. They serve coffee drinks here too which is pretty good esp when you gotta wait, like we did. I recommend either calling before going or make extra time to be here. My niece and I totally underestimated how much time we would spend there and it turned into a 3ish hour thing after painting 2 pieces each. On top of that, when we arrived, there were 2 birthday parties there, so we had to wait 45mins before we could even start. So we walked around the store with my nephew and picked 2 pieces each to paint. My 3-year-old nephew painted his 2 pieces in about 45 mins so he was bored but kept himself entertained while the two of us painted our pieces... Pretty pricey though. Be prepared to drop $30-40/piece. Takes 7-10days for them to "bake" them so don't expect to walk out of there with your pieces in hand. Ask for directions before you start. I don't think I could have known to paint 3 layers and not to leave sharp points on the puffy paint. The good thing is if you do have to wait you have many places to peruse... Took the kiddos to the pet store, watched a dress rehearsal at the stage area, looked at hello kitty things for my niece and Cars-movie things at neighboring stores. read more

So this review isn't really for their pottery but for their staff! I've been coming here to buy coffee off and on for the past 2 years and normally wait on the side for a few minutes. I work with kids 3 times a week and these ladies here handle kids like pros. They're friendly and are always rushing around trying to make sure all the customers are happy. The atmosphere is so child and family friendly I'd love to have parties here! (If I was a kid) It's normally always full on saturdays so I'd call ahead. read more

My family and I started coming here for a couple of reasons....one, we know the owner's daughter who is a great gal and two, we wanted to give our kids something different to do than typical arcades and movies. My husband and I took our two kids here today to paint Father's Day gifts for both of their papas. I called yesterday to make reservations for today and had no problem selecting the time we wanted to come in. Staff was very friendly and accommodating. Both my kids wanted to paint the same piece but only one was available so a worker happily offered to check upstairs for more and sure enough, there was. :) One of the workers asked us if we were familiar with painting, but even though we've come several times before, it had been long since our last visit so I embarrassingly said we needed help. She thoroughly explained it to us with the sample to show us what she meant. She asked us if we had any questions and showed us the wall with more painting techniques. She offered to assist us if we wanted to learn any of those as well. Throughout the entire time, customer service was continually great...checking in on us periodically, happily switching our old palates for new ones, and offers to change our water! Our kids enjoyed painting 3 pieces each! My son is 10 and my daughter is 7. Both were focused and engaged! It was nice as a parent to see them taking pride into selecting their pieces, colors, and painting! My husband who doesn't enjoy painting even said, "Am I getting old, because even though I don't enjoy doing this stuff, I loved watching the kids paint!" Not only did they paint pieces that I'm sure their papas will love, but we as family got to spend great quality time together! Can't wait to pick them up and give them on Father's Day! read more

Love this place! I have painted a few different pieces of pottery here. I find it very relaxing and is a great stress relief. The prices are REALLY good. I use to go to a similar business when I lived in Florida and they charged $10 alone for use of paint not counting the pottery!!! Great selection of pieces to choose from, well organized and easy to choose glazes, brushes, etc and get started on your project. My husband and I went with our 5 year old granddaughter and really enjoyed ourselves. The attendant was friendly and helpful. Many, many examples of finished pieces on the walls to give you ideas and inspiration. Really fun way to spend the morning! We visited on a Monday when many schools were closed...arrived as the cafe opened -- it quickly got busy. Recommend getting there early or asking when there might be a "lull". Plenty of seats but it did get a bit crowded. Our pieces were ready in a week, turned out beautifully and are a fun remembrance of sweet time together. read more

Cute place for kids. Pricings were higher then I thought but then again I'm not so much into pottery so I wouldn't know if that is the normal pricing. Went there for a birthday party and had miscommunication between them. Kind of unprofessional. They had stated that the birthday girl/ boy would get a free ceramic item to paint and when we arrived there and asked for it, they said it was discontinued. They should have just honored it anyways seeing that in the beginning we were aware of it. I would come here again for just a random outing but not for a party. read more

This place is awesome! It is a little pricey, but you pay for the experience! On Friday it's 10% off pottery, and they have a wide selection (tea pots, cups, little animals). They have cute little animals you can paint (dogs, cats, horses, etc) for around ten dollars. The staff is very helpful and will remember you if you return. My boyfriend painted a small animal around three days before mother's day and it was done before mother's day. It's a really fun/cozy place, and they have yummy coffee for sale you can sip on while you paint or to take out. read more

I haven't done clay paintings since I was a kid! I'm glad these types of places are still around so that I may express my artistic talent without having to buy my own supplies. The only thing you pay for is the ceramic piece you want to paint. My friend chose an ashtray and I chose a mug, both practical items. It was a bit pricey at $26 but the chance to let my inner monet out is priceless. I also saw plates, bowls, cups, tiles, figurines (including angry birds but I wouldn't throw these at other people..) I was really tempted to buy a shot glass, but ceramic and alcohol ..dont know about that one..unless it was a candle holder.... There is a whole rainbow wall of paints to choose from along with these nifty squeeze bottles for detailed work. As I was browsing I saw speckled paints, but I will delve into that another visit. Don't take more paint than you need, there is a $5 charge for wasted paints! There are also stencils available, and the staff are more than ready to answer any questions you have. I do not remember painting to be such hard work! we must have been in there for 2-3 hours laboring away. it will take 7-10 days until we can see if all our hard work paid off. I would have given it five stars but the kids screaming and crying made it hard to concentrate. Not the stores fault but thats just the way the cookie crumbles. read more

Hubby and I have recently started to "date" again after a monotonous rut of ordering in and Netflix. We've decided to dedicate at least one day a week to getting out of the house and doing something completely different a new. Last weekend, Clay Café wound up being the central location of our date. Per many reviews on Yelp, we decided to call and make a reservation. Thank God we did - every single seat was filled. We actually had to wait 15 minutes past our reserved start time as the people before us were still drying their creations. No big deal - we weren't in a rush. If you've got time restraints, though, be aware...this seemed like a typical practice. (Heck, even we went over our reserved block of time...thankfully though nobody had reserved a spot after us so we were able to continue sitting there.) If you can't handle an obscene amount of excitable, loud, screaming children, then Clay Café will absolutely NOT be for you. I don't like kids at ALL, but I was so absorbed in making the perfect creation that I was able to shut them out...mostly...until my table got bumped. I scowled and scared a few kids, but whatever. Then need to learn "respect your elders," even if I am only 24. I'm still their elder. Lol. The staff were mediocre at best - I felt like they were beyond annoyed at the seemingly infinite number of children running around, squealing, talking, etc. that they didn't have much patience left even for their more mature customers. Which is fine, whatever, we didn't have to deal with them very much. You go in, pick out your piece, pay for it, get a few instructions, and are pretty much left alone for the remainder of your stay. I'm okay with that. I don't need my hand held or guided instruction, anyways. The most interaction we had with the staff was when we ordered a few drinks, which were a nice, convenient refreshment. There's something enjoyable about sipping on an iced Thai tea while painting, all without ever having had to get up. All-in-all, I had a really great time here with my hubby. You can't beat being at Ward, either - make a whole day of it like we did - grab some lunch, catch a movie, enjoy a nice dinner. The possibilities are endless. My husband did a fantastic job at picking this date day...I'm going to have a difficult time topping him this weekend. :) P.S. - You can pick up your creations in 7-10 business days after painting them. We haven't gotten ours yet. I can't wait to see them! read more

Made a cup since Christmas and have been very happy with it, microwavable, dishwasher safe on top shelf and most of all, it is personalized!! Had fun painting too, just make sure you dont waste paint, they will charge you if your pallette still has full well of paint in it. We used several colors to mish mash it all. Will come again when have the time! Little crowded benches and tables though but people were generally respecting each other's space, little kids were mostly supervised by their parents. They called for my piece within the week, cool! read more

This place is very therapeutic for me personally and lots of fun. My first time here was with a best friend who I hadn't seen in a while. It's really a nice place to sit around, catch up, and doing something fun. I usually spend about an 1.5 hrs each visit but I've seen other customers stay anywhere from half an hour to four hours!! It's a bit pricey and I think it went up a dollar recently (although if I remember correctly, all the other pottery places Oahu used to have we're about the same price). You can spend anywhere on an average of $10-$30. You don't have to pay for paint or brushes just the piece you pick to paint. Beware if you waste too much paint. They'll charge a $5 fee. This has never happened to me though. It never seems to be over crowded so its never like you have to squish next to a stranger and share tables or wait forever for the lady who's hanging on to the paint you want when the sign clearly says not to. A good place for kids to come with their family. I've even seen a bridal party come in and paint while they sat around discussing wedding issues. We love Clay Cafe. We have gone 4 or five times in the past couple years. I wish they had a bigger space. It's very tight and people bump into you while your painting which can be annoying. Other then that it's a great place to make gifts for family and to grab a coffee:)) read more

LOVE! I've gone to clay cafe 15 times in the past two years. It's really a great place to go with your friends to hang out and talk since it usually takes an average of two hours to paint your piece. It is a little pricey (but I'm Chinese...so everything is a bit pricey to me), so I paint dishes like plates or bowls--something useful so it feels more worth it to spend the amount I'm spending. The staff is generally very pleasant, and they are helpful. It takes an average of 7 days for your product to be ready after they fire it up in the kiln. You can make reservations as well which might be helpful since some times the place can get really crowded. When it's too crowded some people start hoarding paints at their tables (which you're not supposed to do), so it can get a little stressful in the chaotic environment. I would definitely recommend going there if you have kids, or if you're in college and wanting a fun thing to do with your friends. 100 stars! read more

This is one of those businesses that everywhere you look there is a boldly printed sign, off in all-caps, telling you not to do something. DON'T PAINT THE POTTERY AND PUT IT BACK. DON'T OVERUSE THE PAINT ($5 CHARGE). DON'T ADD WATER. Etc. It's like every time the owner gets irritated with a customer, she blasts off a sign and tapes it up. It just sends a cold message to customers who want to go there, have a nice time, paint some dishes, and feel like they're an artist. The workers are mostly unfriendly. They expect you to read all of the directions that are, again, printed on signs before you ask any questions. They seem more interested in hanging out behind the counter than in genuinely assisting people. It's not an enjoyable place to be. Mostly, you just feel like you're getting in the way and annoying everyone. The only positives about this place are the variety of pieces to choose from, the wide selection of paints, and the different pieces on display that help give customers ideas (puffy paint, masking tape, sponges, etc.) read more

I came here with a group of about 12 people for a birthday party. They had a lot to chose from with plenty of paints and colors. They allow you to bring in a cake and party stuff, which is perfect. Everyone had fun, and people were really surprised with the results of there completed art a week later. I flipped the bill, which ran 300 bucks, which sucked, but no complaints here. I'm going to go back with a few of us next weekend. read more

This place was fabulous!! We celebrated my friends birthday here and we all got really into painting. It's fairly affordable considering how they let you use their paints and brushes and you. can take your time. I appreciated the different technique options they had on the wall and how to achieve them. The staff were really friendly and helpful. The samples on the wall helped me to brainstorm ideas on what I wanted to do. So many options to choose from. It's a family friendly place and great for all ages. This is a great place to bring your family together, even though it's small, the tables are spacious and many supplies is provide for your artwork. The clay is a bit overprice but that's fine with me. However for the price I pay for my child's small piece, I expect some service; no staff offered help on what to do or provided any directions. We had birthday party for my 9 year old daughter . With high hope that she will have lots of fun. Very disappointed , since we went into the store to book the party date, the staff was not so helpful or informative at all. I have to ask the question to get info. The day of the party, we went to set up the snack, cake for the party. The staff were not helpful at all. She spend May be 5 mins with the kids for the instruction how to paint, that was it. My husband and I running around to help all 15 kids in the party. That was exhausted , and we also did most of the clean up. Why do I paid $200 for the birthday party that we need to do all the stuff by ourselves. I am not recommended this place to any parents. Go to other place that they are more helpful and helpful and like to work with kids. This place is such a waste of the money. read more

I cannot begin to express my gratitude to this wonderful business and the extraordinary people who work there. A few weeks ago I was searching for a unique urn for my daughters ashes, something her daughters could be a part of for their mom. I wish I could remember the name of the woman who helped me over the phone and in the store to find the correct size piece for the niche and the ashes and offer suggestions. I bought the piece at the beginning of the month and today I took my granddaughters to paint it for their mom. The woman who helped us was beyond wonderful, again I can't remember her name and I hope she checks Yelp because she knows who she is. We were there for 4 hours to paint the canister and make it something unique for my very unique daughter who passed away last year. The entire staff made a very emotional experience loving and caring and beyond any expectation that I had. The amount of care and help was incredible and I would recommend this business to anyone looking for a unique, one of a kind piece that is done with their own hands and tons of love. My daughters memory will forever love on in this beautiful work of art created by her daughters with the help of such amazing people. read more
