Recently ordered from here using BeyondMenu as that is the only way to get free delivery from here unless you call. The orders are sent via fax and I ordered at 6pm, come 8pm no food has been delivered!! I called in and asked if they got my order - nope! Apparently the fax didn't go through, but I got charged. I called BeyondMenu who refunded my order. Right after I received a call back from Clay Oven asking if I still wanted the food. I was super hungry and ready for bed. They quickly took my card over the phone and got my food to me in 10 minutes! Not only that, but gave me like a double-sized naan bread (yummy, try it with honey) and a free mango smoothie which was totally tasty. They were very apologetic and let me know just to call in the order next time. They have great compassion and customer service, great food too. Can't ask for more. read more

The Chickpea curry dish here was hittin! The Chicken curry held its own as well, but the boss was the fresh Naan bread! It could not be stopped, I could have eaten it by itself. I had to laugh at the review that said that this is the best Indian restaurant in Frederick. Since there are only two Indian restaurants in Frederick at the moment and the other one isn't very good, that IS an accurate assessment though. It's hard giving them a bad review since they're so gosh darn nice. Our waiter was extremely concerned because I didn't pack my leftover lamb in my to-go box. I assured him that it was very good, but I'm just not a fan of lamb-in-sauce. I love grilled lamb, but this was a little too gamey for my taste. I just didn't know that it was lamb that I was ordering when I got the non-vegetarian dinner for one since it was described only as Rogan Josh. The chicken tandoori that came with my meal was a sad, dried-out little drumstick and thigh that had us wondering if it was actually tandoori sparrow. I liked my boyfriend's vegetarian dinner for one much better. The veggies in the Navratan Korma were in a creamy, flavorful sauce and the Mattar Paneer was a delicious, thick sauce with Indian cheese and peas. Both came with battered and fried potatoes and cauliflower appetizer, daal, a heaping mass of basmati rice and a big pile of naan. I go gaga over naan and theirs was a big disappointment overall. The plain naan that came with the meal was ok, but the garlic naan that we ordered in addition was covered in a thick smattering of bright orange jarred garlic. We didn't eat it, but luckily there was enough of the plain naan to go around. Their mango lassi is very good; refreshing and not too sweet. I thought their prices were a little steep, but it looked like most couples ordered one dish to split along with bread and appetizers. In that case, they're pretty reasonable. There appeared to be a lot of people getting takeout on the night that we were there; I've never even considered getting Indian to go for some reason or another. We'll definitely go back at some point; either sit down or take out. read more

I closed my eyes and took a bite of the delicious butter paneer and perfectly cooked golden rice. Oh and then I took a bite of the lamb biriyani and then one of the butter chicken... Then I had some raita. Perhaps I ordered too much food! Any who it was all delicious! Perfectly cooked, flavorful and the portions are huge! So you can definitely share, or be selfish like me and eat Indian for lunch and dinner three days in a row :) I ordered delivery and they were very fast, nice and they got my order right! The rice is some of the most perfectly cooked I have ever had. The food comes in varying levels of spicy for the faint of tongue and their is a great variety of both Vegetarian and meat dishes so it's a great place to go for a mixed group of eaters. My favorite Indian I've had here on the east coast so far. I highly recommend trying this place out if you haven't already. read more

Very good Indian food, with a large number of choices. I really appreciate that there are a load of options for vegetarians. It can get a little bit pricey, but it's honestly worth it for the quality and quantity of food you receive. In particular, I love the saag paneer at this place, and an order of that plus a naan bread basket gives me three meals total. The vegetarian meal for one has a good variety of dishes and is worth the price when I'm feeling a bit more indecisive. It's all very tasty. I will also mention that I think they skimp a little bit on the carry-out orders. Whenever I order a bread basket to go, I get about half of what I do when I eat in, which frankly pisses me off for the price you pay. I also don't like that they don't give masala tea refills, unlike other Indian restaurants I've been to. :( The best deal by far here is the lunch buffet. There are always a good number of options, and it's VERY reasonably priced. If you're not sure about Clay Oven but want to try it out, the buffet is definitely the best way to go. read more

I ordered takeout (through Yelp) and LOVED it!! I have had all sorts of Indian food - some good, some not so good, some cooked by Indian friends that was delicious - but this blew them all away. The garlic naan is out of this world!! Vegetable samosas and chicken tikka makhani were delicious as well. I also had gulab jumun and mango lassi, neither of which I have ever tried before so I have nothing to compare them to - but I can tell you they were both very yummy. I would absolutely eat here again - and probably will every time I am in Frederick! read more

We tried the Clay Oven for a buffet on the weekend. While the staff was nice and helpful, the buffet was nothing special and the chai was just okay. Very kid friendly place. There were 3 groups of people with kids while we were there. read more

The food here is amazing, if a bit pricey. Portion sizes are very generous, and the selection/variety is extensive. More types of naan are offered here than any other Indian place I've been to. I have only ever ordered carry-out, so I can't speak to their dine-in service or delivery. I actually prefer Clay Oven over Royal Taj in Columbia. (Both are about the same distance from my house, so the food is equally cold and in need of reheating by the time I get home. I wish they'd open a second location up in the Westmnister area, which sorely needs a good Indian place, or even AN Indian place. But I digress.) I love this place. After living in a city where my work place was surrounded on all sides by delicious Indian cuisine, I consider myself a connoisseur. Their Navartan Korma was delicious which is my litmus test. My friend said his lamb wasn't tender but mine was extremely tender and spicy. I would love to make it to their Lunch Buffet some day but Im rarely in Frederick during the day. A few of the best dishes done right is what was promised by the owner who was so kind. I'm a huge fan of Indian food, and I've been to India as well, and this restaurant never disappoints. We always have great service, very good value for the price, and everything I've tried is delicious. I'm especially a fan of the vegetarian dinner for one, it has great variety and hefty portions - plenty for two really! The buffet is always good too. If you like creamy sauces, I recommend the Navratan Korma and the Mattar Paneer. My boyfriend said the Chicken Kadai is excellent if you like spicy dishes. read more

Checked out this restaurant based on the Yelp reviews, and I was not disappointed. It is located in a strip mall, and the outside looked underwhelming, but don't let that fool you. The food is some of the best Indian I have eaten in this area, and I've tried my fair share of Indian restaurants. I ordered the Aloo Saag and asked for it to be made spicy, and unlike many restaurants that hold back on the spice, they really came through. The raita was thick and creamy, and freshly made. The portions were large enough that both myself and my boyfriend had plenty of delicious food to take home. I am often disappointed with the quality of other Indian restaurants, but this one is on the top of my list to check out again the next time I'm in Frederick! read more

Based on the recent reviews, the price for the buffet should be $8-9. Just came here and went up to the cashier. She asks the manager/owner in a foreign language something which I assume was "how much do I charge them". Got charged $11 per person. Seems inconsistent and shady. They deliver! But be sure to order from their website or call in to avoid the delivery charge that you could incur if you order right off the Yelp site. The delivery was kind of slow- we asked for 5:45pm delivery, and it arrived at 6:15pm. Also, one order of rice is more than enough. The mild dishes are kind of spicy.. but everything has great flavor and I love that they have peas and cheese on the menu. The butter chicken was on point too. I don't recommend the mixed appetizer, the fried veggies were soggy and greasy when we got them. The portions are great though- we ordered two meals and extra rice, and we got two full meals out of it (for 2 people and a toddler). read more

Went here for dinner recently, and I agree with the other reviewers that the food is excellent. This is not the fanciest place out there, but the service is good and it is clean and pleasant. I ordered the vegetarian dinner-for-one and I liked everything on the plate. The Mattar paneer and Navratan korma were especially good. I also ordered a mango lassi, which was delicious. Lots of vegetarian options. I would really like to go back sometime and try the buffet. read more

I love Indian food and when I moved to the area I was so excited to see this place just down the street. My husband and I have gotten take out from here a few times and it has gotten better each time. Some of our favorites are the Samosas. We have had the veggie and chicken and both were great. We also love the chicken tikka and chicken marsala as well as their soups. Another grrat thing about this place is how fast the food comes and they are always friendly! read more

Nice decor, nice wait staff, good food. This area is mostly your usual chain restaurants like Red Lobster, McDonald's etc so this is a rare non-chain restaurant find. Menu has variety, if you like extra spicy or not spicy at all-they have it. The rice is served separately from entree and in a pot so if you want to share then you can. Free wifi too, just ask wait staff for password. FYI Frederick is kind of a small town and we found several stores and restaurants that closed at 8, 8:30. Went in with low expectations and left pleasantly surprised. Even though we got take out, we sat at the bar area while our food was prepared. The restaurant was very clean and the staff was pleasant. We ordered chicken makhani (quite bland, like plain tomato cream sauce...I'd ask for it spicier next time), goat curry (delicious! I've lived in the area a very long time and have come to really enjoy this homestyle Indian cooking. The naan is delicious as is the dahl and saag, I prefer lamb. The Biriani is my all time favorite. But I love several others. The samosa's are delicious with the chutney. The chicken Tikka is a solid favorite. Service is always polite pleasant professional yet relaxing with the mild mannered staff. I'm so grateful to have delicious Indian food ready for me in 25-35 minutes when I call in for take out. We've been coming here several times a year for a decade for dinner (never lunch buffet). The dining room is pleasant, not too noisy. A good place for a couple's night out. Don't think the menu prices have gone up in at least 5 years. A combination plate (really a platter) is enough for 2, about $16. Get appetizer, big entree, rice, and naan. Most entrees are in the $12 range. Lamb is always good, Biriani is excellent. Mango lassi and iced tea are excellent. I think the same gentle nice man has served us for a decade. And no, he doesn't stink. It is not a rush, rush, noisy place. There always seems as much takeout as sit-in customers, they enter pathway to the side rather than through dining room. Portions are large without costing $20 each, a rare find. Never a bad preparation, though some dishes we didn't care for. read more

I have eaten from the buffet a few times. Each region of India has it's own very distinct style of cooking. Having lived there for some time, I can say that the cooking here has a strong Nepalese influence. I can't personally classify this as a pure Indian restaurant. I have had most of the vegetarian offerings and nothing really took me back to my time in India. The naan was okay. The pakoras were good. Samosa was not. Overall, the food is okay. Nothing spectacular. Not bad. Just middle of the road average. If you want pure Indian flavor I would look elsewhere. The place is clean and the staff is nice. Not so sure I would have a spoon of the mukhwas by the door on the way out. Looked to have been there for a while. read more
