I was passing through Lancaster on my way back to Columbus, made a pit stop at Millersport to pick up a friend for a quick lunch and Clays was the place she choose. I'm very glad she did, otherwise I would have never seen it, as it is well hidden, nor frankly, chosen it myself. The staff were so friendly and very welcoming. It's obviously a popular diner, as it was packed with locals. They had a half sized bookcase full of boardgames for those who choose to embrace their inner child; and no television. LOVED that! We ordered the seasoned fries as an appetizer, which were savory and seasoned flawlessly; and the cheese, pepperoni and sausage stromboli as our entree. It took nearly an hour for our meal to arrive, which was not ideal since I was on a lunch break, but our game of Scrabble definitely made the wait a bit more bearable. Now, let's get to the part to when our stromboli finally arrives. Drum roll please.. It's was good. Rather, it was quite excellent. Cheesy and buttery and all sorts of deliciousness. Besides the fact that it was perfectly balanced in flavor and cooked to perfection, it was huge! Two meals for sure. The pizza dipping sauce was the only 'meh' part about our meal; watery-thin and lacking in flavor, though quite frankly, the stromboli didn't really need it. Charming building tucked behind a building on Main Street. Easy to miss if you aren't paying attention to the sign. Interior is bright, homey, modern and well maintained, as are the restrooms. I ordered a fried bologna sandwich and a cup of homemade veggie soup. Both were very good. The bologna was a thick slice fried on the flattop grill to perfection. Hot and moist in the center, crispy outside, and black lacy edges. I asked for it on toasted white bread with ketchup, mustard, lettuce and onion. Ahhhhh, good. The soup had a nice amount of veggies, not generous, but a good amount in proportion to the broth. The tomato broth was very tasty. The veggies were a mix of cabbage, green beans, corn, and peas. I did notice that they use frozen and pre-prepared ingredients, such as chicken, some greens, fries. The results seem OK based on the reactions of the customers. Service was friendly and efficient. I have now stopped here twice when I have driven through this area over the past year. This is a habit I will maintain. read more

My mom is actually a cousin to the owners of this place, but I had never been to Clay's. Had always wanted to try it, just was never in the area. A few weeks ago, we went to Buckeye Lake for the heck of it and then ended up here. It's a cute little place, very homey and has a 1950s feel. I had only heard of the stromboli, so my dad and I split a large one. (HUGE!!!) I had to order a side of fries (yum!) The waitress was a sweet-heart and the service was really good. A great place! Would love to go back and try a pizza or a burger. read more

Headed out for a late lunch after voting. Brittany suggested the stromboli. Added mushrooms. Had a garden salad and they substituted spring mix for iceberg at our request. Standard fare, but good balance for stromboli. The stromboli was great. Dough was delicious. Lots of pepperoni, scant sausage and mushrooms. Pizza sauce was just right and the garlic sauce was just the right quantity. I would travel again for the stromboli and look forward to trying other items. read more

On our last day of driving east to Pennsylvania, we got off of I 70 and went to Clay' Cafe for lunch. We were entertained while waiting for our meal to arrive by watching them make their specialty - stromboli. It looked good, and we heard that it was as good as it looked. Too bad we won't have the opportunity to try it. My wife had a BLT and I had the Italian sub. Both of our sandwiches were delicious. Service was great. read more

Never been inside and don't care to. I've been forced to deal with their catering on several occasions. It's sloppy, disorganized, and displays no thought for their customers. Tellingly, when I tried to contact them, I couldn't even get through or leave a message. Their overpriced salads are nothing but bulk bags of iceberg with diced deli meat and dressing packets. My impression of this place is that they're way too busy patting themselves on the back for their good ol'fashioned down-home 'Merican family values tradition to actually pay much attention to what they're doing. By all means, go there if you want to roleplay "Happy Days." If you want food, on the other hand, you can get better for less money. read more

Clay's is a really great little restaurant on Highway 40 just outside of Hebron Ohio. Tremendous pizzas, and sandwiches, you're going to enjoy whatever get to eat here. Don't forget the ice cream! Stromboli - amazing! Not ordering it is the biggest mistake you can make. Service - delightful! From the owners to the locals that work there, everyone is just a big extended family. Ice cream - well, it's Hershey's ice cream with every topping imaginable in large portions. - delicious! Carrot cake- great! Potato soup- it's why I go there. Much like everyone on here has posted, the service may be a little slow. That being said, know that before you come and please do not complain about it in your review! I had the fried green beans and cauliflower for an appetizer. Both were good but I would recommend the cauliflower over the green beans. I ordered there famous Stromboli and it did not disappoint. A small for one person is way more than enough food. Sweet isn't too bad and compliments whatever you eat. I hear the ice cream is good and only tried a spoonful of one of the coffee flavored. We went to Clays last night for dinner. We shared the large Stromboli and I also had a chef salad. The Stromboli was amazing and tasted great:) the salad was perfect size and was delicious. Clay's Cafe is a small, family-owned business tucked behind a building off Main Street in Hebron. A friend of mine suggested the place for their delicious milkshakes and fries. It sounded promising, so my boyfriend and I stopped by last night. I ordered a raspberry milkshake, fried pickles, and a side of coleslaw. My boyfriend ordered a chocolate milkshake and a BLT sandwich. The milkshakes are absolutely delicious. They are the perfect consistency of thick and smooth, and they give you two servings for the price of one. The BLT sandwich was also said to be delicious, but it did not come with any sides and the portion size was surprisingly very small. My fried pickles were obviously microwaved but good, and the coleslaw wasn't anything special. Overall, the food was reasonable and pretty good for the price. The reason why my rating is on the lower side is due to the service and the look of the restaurant as a whole. When we came in, it took us several minutes to be seated even though several waitresses were looking straight at us. My waitress was very sweet but kept apologizing for unknown reasons. It was obvious that she was new and very nervous, so I can't give her much of a hard time, but her repeating "Oh, I'm sorry.." or "This should of been out sooner! I'm sorry.." started to become very annoying. Another thing I noticed about Clay's Cafe was the lack of cleanliness. The floors looked like they were not swept in days. Numerous tables were still dirty from previous customers and a majority of them were still not clean by the time we left. Overall, Clay's Cafe is a great place to stop by to grab a milkshake - but that's it. Everything else is pretty adequate. read more

Here's the issue with Clay's....it takes FOREVER to get your food. It doesn't matter what you order, they have the slowest service I have ever witnessed. I've been there multiplte times for a business lunch, and it has never been faster than 90 minutes for a meal. Longest was 2 1/2 hours, and the waitress had actually forgot our order completely (and we ended up paying for all of it). I think their food is pretty good, but it doesn't take 30 minutes to make a tossed salad, or 1 hour to make a burger & fries. Not sure what's going on back in that kitchen, but if they could fix that I would give this place 4 stars for sure! read more

To start with the calzones are good, probably worth 3-4 stars. But the dine in experience has been very subpar both times we have tried it. It's also expensive. The last time we were there we ordered two sandwiches, cheese sticks, and cokes and our total was over $30!! Plus we were there for an hour. The cheese sticks seemed like they were from the frozen food aisle in the local grocer (actually everything seemed like that). The food is delicious. The Stromboli can't be beat. I always ask for garlic butter for dipping.
